30 year reunion

The ENCINA APACHE 30 year reunion committee is extremely excited to inform you of our upcoming Encina Apache 1982 30 year reunion at the Dante Club, June 23, 2012.

We are looking to hold a LIVELY and entertaining gathering with fun stations to visit, such as a photo booth (with ENCINA garb and appeal), memory lane photo wall, dance area with great music (hopefully a live band), and high quality food served all night -- without the requisite seated formal dining hour.

We hope this will give us all the opportunity to reconnect with long lost friends and provide the unity the Apache Nation needs to survive. Also this event sets the stage for the upcoming 50th reunion, which is coming far too fast, and can’t be missed!

In order to fund the deposit, decorations, reserve the quality food, and get those interested in participating involved… we are asking for those who can afford to buy their tickets early, to do so NOW. And to inspire those to pay early we are offering discounts for early ticket purchasing:

$55 each ticket now through April 1, 2012
            $65 each ticket February 2, through May 1, 2012
$75 each ticket June 1, through night of event.

How to pay: PayPal!

Or send checks (made out to):
Grant Eppler/ DBA Encina Class of 1982
900 Fulton Avenue, Suite 100-9
Sacramento, CA. 95825

FURTHER, anyone who has hit the big time, who can help underwrite big ticket items such as food, bar, or perhaps a live band, can contact me directly via email (see below). These persons, or companies, will receive “Special” recognition at the event.

Cathy Kelley Mowatt
It is with the most immense amount of sadness that I must share with our family and friends that my mother, Cathy Kelley-Mowatt, passed away early this morning after complications related to a diabetic event. We were holding her in our arms as her spirit left us.
My mother was a true warrior who fought for so many years to find comfort and peace from a disease that she was given, but never resented. Her will power to provide me with a fulfilling life, despite her medical obstacles, is beyond commendable. And for every day that I continue to live a bountiful life full of the wonder and perseverance she instilled in me, I will thank her for her sacrifices. She gave me so many years with her beautiful spirit and I believe that she knew I could take it from here. My mother, my companion and my friend. She was my only one, for so many years.
For the first time in so many years, I saw my mother in comfort and peace this morning. And in that moment, I knew that her spirit was lively and free.
Arangements for a celebration of her life will be forthcoming. And in the interim, I ask that you keep our family in your thoughts. My step-father and her husband of 17 years, Doug Mowatt; her father and step-mother, Ed and Cindy Kelley; her mother, Shirley Alexander; her sister, Caitlin Kelley; my father, Eddie Thompson and her best friend of over 45 years, Teresa Lueres. And for my daughter, my sweet Rebel-Ann, please cover her in your most healing thoughts as we help guide her through this journey of loss. Carlie Beck

Shahriar Kaveh
May 27, 1965 - December 19, 2008 Born Tehran, Iran
San Rafael, California
Shahriar was born in Tehran along with his twin brother Sassan. He was the son of Mansour Kaveh and Parvin Aminy and was brother to Hedayat and Farzin. At the age of 13, he moved to the United States to go to school in San Rafael and continued his education at Sonoma State University. At the age of 20, he married the love of his life Shahrzad Sharei who gave birth to their daughter Tara, now 13, and their son Shayan, now 11. Having an entrepreneurial mind, with the help of his wife Shahrzad Kaveh, he started Sonoma Coffee Company in Santa Rosa. Shahriar and his family later moved back to Marin County and started Dreamfield Systems. Between running his businesses, he also teamed up with his brothers and brother-in-law, making invaluable contributions to their organizations. At every place and at every juncture in his life he made many friends. These friends felt his friendship deeply and sincerely, and are loathe to accept his loss. He was a true friend who did not hold back his friendship. He had a unique way of loving everyone around him. He especially loved his family more than anything else. He will be greatly missed by all. We wish Shahriar a peaceful journey in his next life and wish for those who remain the strength to bear his loss.

Shaping hands
By Laura Garnick
alt

The hands of an artist can tell many stories. From the artist’s first mistake to the debris of his or her last piece still embedded underneath the fingernails, the hands are a roadmap to an artist’s life and work. The hands of Sacramento ceramicist Phil Simpson, 41, reflect 18 years of work that has become a passion, not just a hobby. In addition to being an artist, Simpson is a parking attendant by night, and if you leave Downtown Plaza between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., you may even see him working on one of his sculptures in his booth. Some of Simpson’s finished pieces are currently showing at Phoenix Framing and Gallery on L Street. How long have you been sculpting? And what first interested you in this medium? I've been sculpting since I was 13 years old. I started then, and I continued while I was in school for eight years. I took a break for almost 10 years doing commercial work. Then I went back to sculpting in 1996. Do you remember what your first ceramic piece was? Oh, God. This is embarrassing, but I was 13 years old, and it was a replication of C-3PO from Star Wars. Where did you learn to sculpt? At Jonas Salk Middle School; Encina High School; California State University, Sacramento; American River College; Sacramento City College and from different instructors who have given me encouragement, specifically from a high-school teacher named Eric Dahlen. It really has been my passion, my chosen form of media. I have done painting, airbrush and other forms, but sculpting is really where my heart is. I like the physical aspect to it, the 3-D form. And I like working with my hands, as well. How did you get your first show? I was working with another artist here named Galelyn Williams; she gave me a lot of encouragement to do my fine art. Galelyn introduced me to Linda Jolley at the Big Art gallery, and she liked what I was doing, so she gave me my first show in 1996. Then, shortly afterward, Big Art closed, and from there I sold with Diane Tempest for three years at Blooming Art, and now with her again at the Galleria Tempest on Polk Street in San Francisco. How does it feel when you finish a piece, and how does it feel when you have to sell that piece? One thing that happens with some artists is that they are not sure when it is finished. They might say, "Oh, I can just add a stroke here." But I always know exactly when it's done, and hopefully when I'm done with it, I'll feel a sense of satisfaction. It feels wonderful to achieve something that you have in your mind and then put it down. When it comes to selling it, there are certain pieces that you have attachments to or feelings for. But I feel great when something has sold that I felt very strongly for, because now someone else will be able to share it. How do you define art? I believe art is anything that can evoke an emotional response or action through an image. When you see a piece of mine, and it gives you a feeling or reaction, then it does what I want it to do. What’s your secret? How do you keep your glazes from bleeding together? That took awhile. I found a technique that worked well for me, and through experimentation with different types of glazes I found which ones work well. When I work with low-fire glazes, there are specific ones by Duncan and Mayco that I use. I do my pieces through a three-step process. First, it is with a stain that is usually in black. Then I'll add color, and then I'll put a clear over the whole thing. I found that that worked well for me. I like low fire, but I also enjoy high fire. My first show was just high-fire iron oxide. I also enjoy raku, an ancient form of Japanese firing. In the way that I like sculpture for being a physical process, Raku is very much a physical process. When you do a raku process, you first heat the piece to 190 degrees. Then you take the piece out of the kiln with tongs, and it is glowing red, and it looks almost like glass. And then you take it with tongs and put it into containers that have combustible items--such as newspaper, leaves and sawdust--and you seal it. You let it burn for like 12 minutes and then take it out with tongs. Sometimes it is still on fire, and then you immerse it in water. You can also just let it air dry, as well. I did a series of armadillos [with] raku, and it is a really unpredictable process. ... There's no control, and that is the reverse of my low-fire glazes, which involve complete control. This is 100 percent the opposite, because you don't know what you are going to get, and it's really exciting. It is also volatile because when you are taking it out of the containers, the pieces can break and shatter.

FOR THIS EVERY GUY, BOOK SUCCESS IS UNEXPECTED

Grant Eppler is no writer. Just ask him. Just ask friends and acquaintances, many of whom spent years reminding the guy that
he was no writer. Grant Eppler is just an everyman, so far as he can tell. How the Sacramento native came to have a book and an infant publishing company and a public voice about fatherhood is a curiosity that should baffle everymen everywhere.
Nineteen months ago, Eppler self-published "Every Guy's Guide as to What to Expect When She's Expecting" (Furlip Publishing, $11.95). The book is a lighthearted look at Eppler's own mystified voyage through his wife's first pregnancy.
The whole project grew out of nothing. Nothing, which is what Eppler found when he went searching for up-to-date,
easy-to-digest information for prenatal fathers, back in 1995.
"A week after we found out my wife was pregnant, she received seven books in the mail from her girlfriends all over the country," Eppler says. "Me? I got this - a slight head jerk - when I told my best friend. That was it."
Eppler is no writer, but when he saw the void of material for expectant dads, he began to think that he could scribble out a few notes about the funny ups and downs in his own experiences.
Now the book has headed into its second printing. The product of that pregnancy, William Berkeley Eppler, is 5 years old. A second child, John Clark Eppler, is 1. A second book - "Every Guy's Guide 2 Babies and Kids" - is due out soon. And suddenly the blossoming everyman is kicking around Every Guy ideas for just about everything familial - like, say, family vacations.
"Of course, there's 'Every Guy's Guide to Divorce,' which I hope never to write," Eppler says. "But my wife teases me about it sometimes: 'Hope you're working on your book, Slick!' "
On the one hand, Eppler concedes, this is the last place he expected to find himself. A graduate of Encina High School,
American River College and Sacramento State, he has spent most of his adult life in the business world. His "day job" is still a
manager/salesman's position with Portion Pac Inc.
On the other hand, that business background has ultimately been vital to his fledgling career as an author. It gave him the skills to pitch the manuscript, to discern that the first modest offers weren't good enough and to hatch a one-man publishing label - which, by the way, maintains all rights over the "Every Guy" theme.
"There must have been 50,000 people who told me, 'This will never happen, this will never work, you're wasting your time, go do something else,' " Eppler says. "And then there were eight or 10 or 20 or 30 people that I bumped into along the way that said, 'This is good. Don't ever let this go.'"
One of those people was Melinda Eppler, Grant's wife of eight years and the unavoidable central character in "Every Guy's Guide." Melinda gave her husband permission to share her mood swings, morning sickness and obstetrician appointments with everymen everywhere. Grant says he was determined not to demean or degrade his wife's own experiences; in the end, she didn't ask him to take out a single anecdote.   But Melinda, a communications officer with Sierra Health Foundation, has some knowledge of language and presentation. When Grant handed her a red pen with a copy of the manuscript, she wasn't shy about using it.
"She's brilliant," says Eppler, who goes by his middle name but uses his first name, William, in his writing. "So to have me, who's kind of a clod, pecking away at the keyboards and handing stuff to her ... well, let's just say that the first copies were so red that you couldn't see the typed words."
The ultimate result is a book that's designed to be quick-hitting and digestible for the everyman. When Eppler shipped it out to be printed, he even paid extra to have it printed in a smaller format - to seem all the more inviting, and not overwhelming, to the Average Joe.
"I wanted the normal guy to get it as a gift because he's never going to buy it for himself," Eppler says. "It's not meant to be the Messiah book of fatherhood. If you can pick it up and laugh for five minutes, that's a victory."
Eppler's book hits all the pertinent pregnancy moments that are likely to throw a first-time dad for a loop. Those include Lamaze class, which Eppler originally cheered because he thought his wife had said LeManz class, presumably a high-speed driving school; the painful selling of the Alfa Spider convertible and along with it a final bastion of fleeting youth; and the nasal whine of the sonogram technician as she tries to explain what the heck you're looking at.
The underlying theme of the whole book, Eppler hopes, is something positive for dads - and about dads.
"All we hear from the media is about deadbeat dads," Eppler says. "That term, by itself, is probably the most destructive thing that's ever happened to dads. There are deadbeat dads - no one disputes that - and they're the scourge of the earth. But what's the opposite of the deadbeat dad? What's the positive term?"
Maybe it's just this: the Every Guy.

Though I never imagined myself being a single mom life has been filled with adventures, challenges and more rewards than I ever dreamed.
Friends: Unfortunately, real life has taken up most of my time and I've lost touch with nearly everyone.  Some of you may remember Steve Uzelac from the class of 1984.

I met my husband prior to graduating in 1979 in 1981 we married and in 1985 we had a beautiful baby girl....who by the way is now 16 1/2 yrs old!   Unfortunately, marrying at such an early age was probably not the best thing to do either!  We divorced in 1987.  Soon after I met a man that I was with for 14 years but this too did not work out.  So, for the time being, I'm single and loving every minute of life!

I went to work full time for about 6 months for a process control company called Heristics.  I hated that, the long hours and low pay.  Then after getting my Masters Degree I went to work for TRT and I also talk Computer Science for a while for Chapman University.  Then I went on to work for a company in Dallas, Texas called WTS first as a Senior Software Engineer and then as Engineering Manager.  In the spring of 1999 I came out to Dallas Texas on a 4 month trip that was supposed to be 3 weeks.  Well, in that time I meet and feel in love with my fiance.  We are going to be Married July 7, 2002.  I really like it out here in Texas, the job opportunities are much better than anything in Sacramento.  In Sacramento it would take me with 3 degrees 6 months to find a job, here I have looked for 4 weeks and had 3 offers.

Favorite_memory: I used to play hand ball about 6 hours a day my sophmore year, I played in the morning, if I got up there in time, I played, and lunch and after school until sunset.  I loved the game and the small 50 cent wagers on the games.  The trick was the double or nothing bets.
My senior year I wasn't out running around.  I was in Mr. Stallings Math class, at lunch and after school.  Me and about 5 other students where playing Galaxian on the TRS-80 model III's in there.  We had went to Radio Shack and bought a speaker so we could have sound.  We actaully got in trouble once by leaving after 7pm or so, because the silent alarm was turned on after the janitor came around.
Story: I was in Sanders Algebra II class and there was two academic hot shots in there Arron Winchester and Micheal Kramer, among maybe one or two others.  Well, the bragged and carried on through out the semester.  So I challeged them on the next test to see who got the highest grade....
Result: we all got 100% and Mr. Sanders got the big belly laugh but loved the competion because it pushed everyone to do better.

Fox 40 Sales Manager Worked Hard, But Loved to Have Fun
David Kriegel, the hard-driving local sales manager for Sacramento television station KTXL, Fox 40, was remembered Wednesday as "a helluva salesman" who worked hard but also knew how to have a good time. The 33-year-old Sacramento man died Saturday several hours after his 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser overturned on Blue Ravine Road in Folsom.
Earlier Friday he had played in the Ad Club Golf Tournament at Rancho Murieta, said his boss, Mike Fisher, vice president and general manager of KTXL. "A tremendous positive, generous person," was the way he described Mr. Kriegel. "He was one of those guys who would never, never, never give up. He was a helluva salesman, a helluva sales manager and a helluva motivator of people. He also liked to have a good time, and he had a good time."
An only child, David Henry Kriegel was born in Sweden, where his mother, Barbro Myraeus, was a journalist, and his father, Doug P. Kriegel, was a student at the University of Stockholm. Several years later, his family moved to Sacramento, where his father became a reporter for television station KXTV Channel 10. A versatile athlete, David earned varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball at Encina High School, where he graduated in 1982. Four years later, he earned a bachelor's degree in
economics at the University of California, Davis, where he played varsity baseball.
Mr. Kriegel worked in television sales in Palm Springs and Los Angeles before moving to Channel 40 in Sacramento. "He was a fun-loving guy and, unlike me, he was good at business," recalled Doug Kriegel, who now cover general news for television station KNBC Channel 4 in Los Angeles. "When I would suggest that he get into television news, he would say, 'I want to get a real job. You call that work? That's not work.' He was much more serious than me."
"Half the time, he did not listen to me, naturally," his father said, "but he was the most fabulous son a guy could have. He called me a dinosaur, but he would always take me with him to the World Series and the Super Bowl. He would get these tickets and say 'It's for a client, but what the heck.' Boy was he fun, just everything you would want in a son."
His mother died three years ago of ovarian cancer. His father resides in Encino.
A baseball scholarship is being set up in his memory at UC Davis.  In addition to his father, he is survived by his grandmother, Ingegard Myraeus of Stockholm.
Services will be held at 2 PM today in the East Lawn Memorial Park Chapel, 43rd Street and Folsom Boulevard.

Bio: I went to CSU Sacramento and obtained a degree in Marketing with a minor in Communications in 1987.  Perfect for a sales job right?  Not!  I worked at Vision Service Plan for nearly 14 years and changed jobs 6 times and finally  the last two years of my employment used my degree in Marketing as a Competition Analyst.   I married a wonderful man named Michael in 1991 and we recently (1998) had a daughter, Taylor.  I currently am a stay-at-home mom and love it!.  I also work part-time for my husband as his legal assistant.  I really feel I have the best life - I get to see my daughter grow before my eyes each day and I get to see my husband's business flourish and be a part of it!
Trivia: Michael and I have traveled and golfed a lot.  We went to Australia on our honeymoon for three weeks playing golf and seeing the sights.  We have also been to Scotland, England, France, Belgium and Germany.  We have golfed at so many beautiful courses - St. Andrews being the most historic and Pebble Beach being my personal favorite.
Friends: Joey Lawand, Greg Selk, Laura Meyer, Ed Ellis, Soames Funikoshi, Karen Eissinger, Robin Durham.  I've lost contact with most of my friends except Laura Allen and obviously my brother, Greg.

Bio: I joined the Navy and spent five years on the USS Carl Vinson as a shipboard firefighter. I was married in 1987 to a wonderful woman. We are still married with children and life is wonderful. We have moved from Fremont to Stockton to Elk Grove. We have been living in Elk Grove for about five years now and it sure is nice to be home again.
Trivia: I joined the Navy in 1983. Some/All of you may remember I was a little fat "Troll" in H.S. so you can imagine how I hated bootcamp. I wasn't one of those guys who was a late bloomer and grew 4-8 inches in the service. Now 35 I've pretty much given up on growing taller. So you can imagine how the last 15 years has taken it's toll on my hopes. Since I was so consumed with being short I didn't realize my hair disappeared. After watching infomercials on hair loss ie... Rogain Propecia and GLH 9 (Ron Popeil is a genius!)) I finally gave up and accepted the fact that I'm Short and Gorgeous. I can't type while I'm laughing.
Friends: I had a few best friends... Darcy Selk, Ed Ellis,Soames Funakoshi and Sam Bess. I still Talk with Soames, Ed and Sam.
Hobbies: I've been playing league Roller Hockey for two years now. Hockey is such an awesome game. I still play golf when I can. We do a lot of camping! I also enjoy tasting and drinking wine. Beer is still a major food group in my diet but a nice Cabernet will make a nice dinner even better.
Kids: I've always wondered how a guy like me can have such beautiful daughters. The answer is quite simple.... My WIFE! With that I still wonder how I was involved in the process.Hmmmmmmmm! Of course people brag about their kids. Who is going to say, "My children are so ugly I only let them out at night" and "My kids are dumb as stumps". Anyway, I have two daughters, Amanda 9 and Hannah 7. They are so beautiful and spoiled rotten. Amanda has these big green eyes with brown hair and Hannah has brown eyes with long BLONDE hair. That's right blonde! The closest my wife ever came to being blonde was a grey hair once. So as I said earlier, I may not have had anything to do with these kids. Seriously,I just love those girls and it is great to see history repeat itself as they grow older. It's pretty bad/sad when you know all the words to every Backstreet boys song. I Love having Daughters!
