Stories: The boys beat me up. The girls demoralized me by calling me up and making fun of me. They said they would go out with me, dance with me, marry me, kiss me, but they never did. I went to two dances and the fist dance only one danced with me. The second one no one danced with me. I cried all the way home. One female said they would take me to the twerp dance that's where the female asks. She asked me on Thur. and I went home very happy. I stayed in dodgeball 7 Min. while everyone else on my team was out, and I was going on my fist date tonight. When I had the class where the female was I stood at the door and waited for her. Finally she came and she told me that She can't take me because she asked someone else first. I cried all the way home. The whole class of 1200 students think that I am an mentally retarded. In 1964 I wanted to comit suicide but I found Jesus. He loves me and accepts me for who I am. I want to go to the 50 year reunion to see how many made it that far. One died a year or two of graduation by playing with a radio and it fell in the bath tub. One commited suicide. and one was shot point blank in a barbers shop hassling someone in the barbers chair. The boys also trid to pee on me in the showers. I am still alive and well and the bad ones are gone because of alcohol, tabacco, drugs, and sex, which I never had alcohol, tabacco, drugs, or sex. Next week I go to the senior games and I all ready have over 110 medals. Let's see any of you do that.
Comments: let me know if and when the 50 year reunion is.

He was born in Canada on Feb. 26, 1948, and spent his early years on a cattle ranch outside Calgary, Alberta, with his parents, Gertrude and Kenneth Coppock, and his sister, Carolyn. There they attended the Indian reservation school located on the ranch.

After moving to California with his family, Allan became devoted to sailing, spending much time on the San Francisco Bay and out to Hawaii. His love of sailing continued all his life, whether racing on Lake Champlain or cruising in the British Virgin Islands and the Grenadines.

He was involved in a number of businesses in Stowe, and after volunteering and working at the Mt. Mansfield Ski Club, started a sports timing business, Precision Sports Timing.

During the past 12 years, he and his wife, Kitty, spent several months each year sailing in the British Virgin Islands, where they had many dear and caring friends. They also enjoyed years of traveling to Africa, India, Nepal and Bhutan, as well as many other countries.

Allan served on the Stowe Development Review Board for 20 years and was on the Copley Hospital Foundation, Helen Day Art Center, and Axa Insurance boards.

KLOPPENBURG, Peter Eugene
Mom
Often times are hard.
Sometimes good.
Like the many mountains you and I have climbed-
Like the darkness of a peaceful wood-
I have known you.
My mind is troubled-
Often tangled with a choking vine called life-
Often seething with joy and then a terrible strife.
But I've always loved you in my way.
As the sun beats down upon me,
I feel close to you Mom.
As the wind blows through the grass,
It blows all of life's colors in your direction.
It blows a coming summer of love and joy.
It blows my best thoughts to you.

KENT JENSEN
Fatal Desert Crash
Severe turbulence created by winds up to 72 mph may have ripped apart the tail of a private plane, causing it to crash Thursday near Mojave. The three men aboard were killed. The victims were Bruce Marlen Rempert, 36, the pilot; Leroy Moncrief, 66; and Kent Van Jensen, 36, all of Sacramento. Moncrief and Jensen were employees of Lawson Mechanical Co., a Sacramento subcontractor involved in building a 1,000-bed maximum security prison at the California Correctional Institution at Tehachapi. Sheriff’s Sgt. Hal Chealander said the single-engine plane apparently left Sacramento early Thursday en route to Tehachapi. The westbound plane landed upside down, its landing gear extended, in brush about 200 yards east of Highway 58, three miles north of Mojave. There was no fire. Mojave Airport Manager Dan Sabovich said winds were clocked at 72 mph at 8:30 AM, about five minutes after the plane’s wreckage was found. “Coming off the mountains, those winds boil … it had to be extreme turbulence,” Sabovich speculated. “Those mountains were all covered with boiling clouds.” Officials of the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were at the scene to determine the cause of the accident. Chealander said three unidentified witnesses reported seeing the plane apparently flying into the head wind when it went into a flat spin and crashed. He said he assumed the pilot was “trying to climb over the mountains.” At the crash site, Sabovich said he noticed that a section of the airplane’s V-shaped tail was missing. He found the section in the desert, about 200 yards from the plane. “Once you lose that, you have no control,” Sabovich said. He said the tail section may have separated in flight because of excessive stress.  [Published in the Bakersfield Californian, Friday, March 22, 1985]
Three Area Men Killed in Plane Crash
Three Sacramento men en route to a prison construction site in Tehachapi were killed Thursday in the crash of a light plane near Mojave. They were identified as Bruce Marlin Rempert, 36, pilot of the single-engine Cessna; Kent Jensen, 36, and Leroy Moncrief, 66, both employees of Lawson Mechanical Contractors of Sacramento. The three were on their way to Tehachapi where the Lawson firm is working on construction of a state prison. Jensen was sheet-metal foreman for the firm, and Moncrief was general superintendent of plumbing. The Kern County Sheriff’s Department said the plane crashed shortly before 8:30 AM upside-down with its landing gears up, 100 yards from Highway 59 and two miles north of Mojave. The airplane did not burn. Jack Jensen, brother of Kent Jensen, said Rempert was hired to fly the Lawson company airplane. He said the airport at Tehachapi was fogged over, and the three were going to land at Mojave. He said it is standard procedure in bad weather to have a vehicle pick up passengers at Mojave when the Tehachapi landing site is fogged in. The Federal Aviation Agency and National Transportation Safety Board sent investigators to the scene. Kent Jensen leaves his wife, Lynette, and three children, aged 11, 9, and 4. Moncrief leaves his wife, Virginia.  [Published in the Sacramento Union, March 22, 1985]

STEPHEN AYERS
Stolen Coat Triggers Shooting
An argument over whether a 13-year-old youth took a landscaper’s coat containing a small amount of marijuana resulted in the shooting death of the landscaper and the arrest on a murder charge of the youth’s father Sunday afternoon. The shooting occurred in a parking lot near the New Horizons In Hair beauty salon at 10089 Folsom Blvd. about 12:40 PM. Stephen Ayers, 30, of 990 Acacia Avenue was shot in the left side of the neck and pronounced dead at Mather Air Force Base Hospital. Wilson Dayle Graham, 40, of 8767 El Toreador Way, Elk Grove, was arrested without resistance by Detectives Fred Homen and Gary Gritzmacher, who were driving by the scene seconds after the shooting. “That’s the second time in five years that I’ve come upon a murder like that,” Homen said. “We had the guy in custody in about two minutes.” “I’m the one that called. I’m the one that shot him,” Graham reportedly told the detectives as they approached him. The officers said they found an unloaded .25-caliber automatic pistol on a counter in the shop. A clip was next to the gun. Two expended shell casings were found outside. Graham’s common-law wife, Lorraine Olson, 30, works at the beauty salon. As Homen reconstructed the shooting scene, Graham was on one side of a vehicle and Ayers was on the other side when Graham fired one shot which missed Ayers. A second shot struck Ayers in the neck and he fell, mortally wounded. His brother Brian was watching as his brother was killed, sheriff’s deputies said. The shooting was triggered when Ayers claimed someone had taken his jacket from a site Ayers and his brother were landscaping at West La Loma Drive and Folsom Boulevard. Officers said Ayers checked at a nearby convenience store, where he found his jacket and was told he might find the youngster who took it at a nearby beauty salon. Ayers went to the salon and confronted Graham, officers said. Ayers reportedly asked Graham about his son and the theft of the marijuana from Ayers coat and was told, “Quit arguing about my kid and accusing him of taking your stuff.” Graham left the chair where his hair was being done and walked into the parking lot where he confronted Ayers. More words were exchanged and the shooting occurred, detectives said.  [Published in the Sacramento Union, Monday, April 10, 1978]

Obituary: Quinton Duval, 61, noted poet who nurtured others
Published: Friday, May. 21, 2010 Quinton Gibson Duval, a noted poet and teacher who was widely revered in the Sacramento literary community, died May 10 of cancer, said his wife, Nancy. He was 61.
Mr. Duval enjoyed sharing his love of poetry. He published four books of poems: "Guerilla Letters," "Dinner Music," "Joe's Rain" and "Among Summer Pines." He contributed to prestigious literary magazines and wrote art criticism for publications.
He printed quality chapbooks by other poets as publisher of Red Wing Press. He mentored aspiring poets and participated in readings, workshops and writing groups with other professionals.
"He would go to everyone's readings and support everyone's books," said Victoria Dalkey, The Bee's art critic. "He was so generous and kind and very supportive of everyone in the community."
Mr. Duval taught English and creative writing for 29 years at Solano Community College in Fairfield. He was instrumental in creating the Creative Writing Department and invited writers and poets to read their works to students.
In honor of his retirement last year, the college created the Quinton Duval Prize for Creative Writing. The award and a stipend are given annually to a student, whose poem or short story is published in the Suisun Valley Review.
"He was a wonderful teacher," said former student Albert Garcia, dean of language and literature at Sacramento City College. "He introduced me to poets that I continue to love today and presented poetry as something that everyone can appreciate."
Mr. Duval was born in 1948 in El Paso, Texas. He grew up in Florida and Southern California before settling in Sacramento and graduating from Encina High School.
He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in creative writing at California State University, Sacramento, and a master of fine arts degree at the University of Montana. He married Nancy in 1988 and lived in West Sacramento.
Mr. Duval's poems draw on ordinary events to evoke vivid images and powerful feelings. In "Morning Tea," one of his last published works, he sketches a lazy getaway:
We are heading toward somewhere
with a view
above a little town
where we'll receive mail and buy
three-day old papers to read.
The mood shifts dramatically in the final verses, about a journey's end:
One day
I suppose we won't be together.
You'll come to find me still in bed,
eyes like that fish we ate last night. …
After breakfast, find Bobo the fisherman
and his four sons. Tell them to bring rope
and a sheet of plywood. I've never had
a ride on plywood. I've never loved anywhere
as much as here, with you. I'd do it again
in a minute. You know me.

"It's strangely prophetic," his wife said. "But he says he'd do it all over again in a minute. He loved life, and his works were love poems."

Presently, I live with my wife Lynda in Oldtown, Idaho. This is a little town on the Idaho-Washington border about 50 miles north of Spokane, Washington. I have lived here with my wife Lynda since August of last year when I retired.
We lived in Maryland for 28 years where I was the Labor Relations Manager for Montgomery County Government a local government in the suburbs of Washington D.C. There we raised our four children, Samuel (34), Nathan (32), Stafford (29) and Britta (24). All are currently married and are living with their spouses and our eight grandchildren in various parts of the United States.
After graduating from Encina, I attended Brigham Young University where I graduated with a degree in political science and then obtained a Master of Public Administration degree from the same institution. My education was interrupted for a 30 month period when I served a Church mission in Norway, learning the Norwegian language, the language of my ancestors. It was at school that I met my wife Lynda, who was from Idaho Falls, Idaho. We have been married for almost 36 years.
My first professional job out of college was in Salt Lake City, where I worked for the Utah Public Employees Association. We then relocated to Bloomington, Indiana for some post graduate work and continued my professional career in public sector labor relations at the Midwest Center for Public Sector Labor Relations. Shortly thereafter, we moved to the Washington D. C. area where I obtained employment with Montgomery County Government in Rockville, Maryland..
Living in the East provided many opportunities for professional growth and a different experience for our family; enjoying the history of the area, the beaches and foliage. I developed hobbies in photography, gardening, reading and jogging.
It was hard to leave our many friends and professional colleagues when we decided to relocate to Northern Idaho. Here my 85 year old mother lives in her childhood home. We have been in the process of building a new home here and are making new friends, enjoying the scenery and the out of doors. Our new address is 423 Solar Rd., Oldtown, Idaho 83822 and our phone is 208 437 3251 for anyone who would like to contact us.
I left Sacramento permanently with employment after college. In the intervening years I have only been back a couple of times and not in the recent past. I understand there are many changes that have occurred. I look forward to the opportunity of getting back in the near future.
What do I remember about my years at Encina; Bob Hall, Gary Leavitt, football ( 2 a day practices and weightlifting classes), letterman sweaters, outside lockers, senior hill, hamburgers at the cafeteria, the Kennedy assassination and typing class (one of my most valuable HS skills).

THOMAS, Linda Lee
6/22/1948 - 12/18/2005
Linda died unexpectedly, but peacefully at home. She lived her motto joyously, ''Always look on the bright side of life.'' She was never without  a smile on her face, a kind, cheerful word, and genuine care for every one she met. Linda had many passions: sports, travel, Broadway shows and show tunes, and her beloved Cal Bears. She relished sharing these passions with her wide circle of good friends and chronicling the adventures they shared. Linda was born in Watsonville and grew up in the Central Valley. She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1970, and received her Masters Degree in International Business from Thunderbird School of International Business in 1971. She had a long successful career in marketing and training, and she spent the last 16 years as a Director in the Marketing Department at Round Table Pizza, Inc. Linda was a long time resident of Alameda. Linda is survived by her brothers, Norman Thomas Jr, and Robert Thomas; her niece, Andrea Thomas; her nephews, Owen Thomas, Jeffrey Thomas and Mark Thomas; her uncles, Gordon Thomas and Paul Thomas; her aunt, Isabel Thomas; her sisters of the heart Judi Fletcher, and Janie Hanson; her beloved godchildren, Greg Fletcher, Lisa Fletcher, Robbie Hanson, Helene Hanson, and Lillian Quinata and her large and loving family of friends. We will remember her joyful spirit, her selfless care, and the great love she had for us all. Memorial Services will be held for Linda on Sunday, January 29 at 2:00 pm at Veterans Memorial Building, 3780 Mt. Diablo Blvd, Lafayette. Donations may be made in her memory to Glide Memorial Church Development Office, American Cancer Society, or a charity of the donors choice. Arrangements by Neptune Society 301 Franklin St. Oakland,CA. Published in the Sacramento Bee from 1/22/2006 - 1/24/2006.

Another of our classmates died recently...the Sac Bee (Sunday, January 22, 2006) had an obituary of Linda Lee Thomas, who evidently died last month. She was such a nice person, one who always had a smile on her face. I used to see her in San Francisco, when she was working for the Yellow Pages. I send condolences to her family and friends. Marcia Friedman Cohen 66

I was reading the obituaries in the Sacramento Bee yesterday (and the Contra Costa Times) and the day before and read that Linda Lee Thomas died. She was in the Class of 1966 at Encina... a senior class officer and involved in lots of activities.  (She was a pretty good friend of mine in high school and college, albeit we lost touch thereafter.) Dawn Lauppe Panton 66 Linda and were friends from grammar school, when I heard from Marcia Friedman Cohne last week of Linda's death I couldn't believe it and am so deeply saddened. My prayers are with Linda and her family and those of us who knew and cared for her. ann p meredith 66 I too read of Linda Thomas' passing. We had stayed in touch for about 10 years after graduation and then lost contact. We went to the Junior Prom together and walked together at graduation. She was the first to receive her diploma and I was second. We went to rival colleges but retained our friendship. My best to her family. Jim Quillinan, '66

Occupation: Physician
Bio: After graduation attended UC Davis; earned BS, MSc, PhD.  Then went to Stanford for postdoctoral fellowship.  Then I went back to UC Davis for an MD (1982). There, I met and married Reiko Sano with whom I have a now 16 year old son, Seiji.  Spent 3 years at UCLA for residency, then another 4 years at Stanford for Cardiology fellowship.  Since 1988, I've been in private medical practice as an interventional cardiologist in the Salinas-Monterey area.  My family and I live in Monterey.
Trivia: Once my life finally settled down, my love for choral music resurfaced.  I'm a member of a 50 voice semi-professional choral ensemble (Camerata Singers of Monterey County)in which I sing tenor.
Friends: Best friends from Encina included Jim Lewis and Ray Skelly.  Other friends have since died: Jim Elsworth, Steve Ayers, Harold Maritsus.  I used to hang out with Tom and Bill Stacy, too, but have since lost contact with them.
Hobbies: Singing, astronomy.
Kids: Everett is 16 now; and a junior at Monterey HS where he's made the honor roll!  He loves to practice Kendo and other martial arts.  I can't get him to take up singing, however.  He'd make a pretty good bass.
Memorable_teachers: I often remember Jack Carey, who first introduced me to serious choral music.  Frau Elise Wolz demonstrated a wonderful passion for German.  John Stearns made Physics fun and practical.  John Tracey's determination to make History interesting and fun will always be remembered, too.

I've been married 26 years(and most of them good) to Ray Santana- a New Yorker stationed in California by the US Navy. After serving 6 years on the aircraft carrier Midway in Vietnam, he decided he liked it here so much he stayed. I convinced him to stay here he had to marry a native Californian - it worked.

Mountain Light Photography Press Release
Monday, August 12, 2002
World-renowned wilderness photographer and writer Galen Rowell, and his wife and business partner Barbara Cushman Rowell, a photographer and writer in her own right, died early Sunday morning in an airplane crash outside of Bishop, Calif. The Rowells, who were returning to their Bishop home from a circumnavigation of the Bering Sea, were passengers in a small privately owned plane that went down south of the Bishop Airport. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by NTSB and FAA officials. The plane carried four people and there were no survivors. Tom Reid of Bishop piloted the plane. The fourth passenger was Carol McAfee, also of Bishop. Galen is survived by two children from a previous marriage, Nicole Ryan and "Tony" Edward Anthony Rowell, and two grandsons, Forrest Avery Ryan and Colby Dustin Ryan. Barbara is survived by her mother Lucile Cushman, brother Robert Cushman, and nieces Mariah and Grace Cushman. Born Aug. 23, 1940 in Berkeley, Calif., to a college professor and a concert cellist, Galen was introduced to wilderness before he could walk. He began climbing mountains at the age of 10 and by age 60 he had completed more than 40 expeditions on all seven continents and to both poles. He has produced 18 books of photos and text that exemplify his special brand of participatory wilderness photography in which the photographer transcends being an observer with a camera to become an active participant in the image being photographed. In 1984 he received the Ansel Adams Award for his contributions to the art of wilderness photography. Since 1986, he has written a popular monthly column for Outdoor Photographer Magazine and in 1992 he received a National Science Foundation Artists and Writers Grant to photograph Antarctica. Barbara Rowell was the president of Mountain Light Photography, a photo agency, gallery and small press co-owned with Galen. Barbara piloted a Cessna T206 and had recently completed her first book Flying South: A Pilot's Inner Journey, scheduled to be released in October of 2002. Her photographs have been published in National Geographic, Outside, Plane & Pilot, and in many books, calendars, and travel publications. Barbara was born Jan. 29, 1948 in Hawaii to Lucile and Irving Cushman while her father was stationed in the Navy at Pearl Harbor. At the age of five, her family was transferred to Texas for a brief stay in Kingsville before settling in California. After moving to Aspen to design ski wear, she returned to California to complete her studies in Textiles and Business, and graduated in 1978 from the University of California at Davis with Highest Honors. Barbara and Galen were married in 1981 and together built Mountain Light Photography into a successful gallery and stock photography business that recently relocated from the Bay Area to their new home of Bishop in the Eastern Sierra. Barbara and Galen traveled to many exotic locations, including to a National Geographic assignment in Pakistan to cover the highest war in history where they were flown throughout the Himalaya as guests of President Zia. They have also been the guests of the Dalai Lama, and served as guides to Robert Redford on a trek through Nepal. They touched many lives around the world, and they will be sorely missed. Services for the couple are pending. Please check the Mountain Light Gallery website for more extensive biographies, and further information as it becomes available: http://www.mountainlight.com.

After graduating from Encina in 1966, I went to American River (AR).  My main goal at that time was simply to get a student deferment to stay out of the Vietnam War draft.   While at AR, I took an interest in Business and decided to go to a 4-year college and study business management.
In 1969, I transferred to San Jose State College and got a degree in 1971. I did have to joint the US Army Reserves to say out of the Vietnam War.  I had to take the MOS (Military Specialty) no one wanted.  I was a drill sergeant for six years in the reserves.
After working in the San Francisco Bay Area of about five years and finishing with the Reserves, I came to Japan on a 1-year contract to teach English to businessmen in a small town north of Tokyo.
During that one year, I learned of a graduate school in Tokyo.  I applied for admission, attended there and graduated in 1980.  While in graduate school, I met my wife.  This September, we will have been married for 20 years.  We have two daughters.
After completing the graduate school, my neighbor introduced my to his company, Isuzu Motors, and I was employed by them in 1980.  Isuzu is affiliated with General Motors.   Currently, GM owns 49% of Isuzu.
I have now been with Isuzu for 20 years, and over that time I have mainly been involved in training overseas truck dealers and distributors.  Most of the training is involved with vehicle features, but I also get conduct sales, sales management, and general management training for retail dealerships.
Much of the training work is in developing countries where it is needed the most, so I have traveled extensively throughout Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Africa.   As a matter of fact, I was unfortunately on Ethiopian Airlines flight #961 that was hijacked and crashed in the Indian Ocean on November 23, 1996.  I was one of 48 people who survived out of 175 passengers.  Also, I am blessed with no permanent injuries.  I get very little work in North America or Europe.
I am still involved in that type of work today, although to a lesser degree with the very deep recession here in Japan.  All the automobile companies are suffering, including Isuzu and travel budgets are very tight.
I have been in Japan now for 24 years and plan to stay here for at least another 10 years.
