Calvin Baker wrote:
Occupation: Retired – U.S. Forest Service
Bio:   After Encina, I attended American River College for three terms before dropping out.  Once I dropped out it just took the government 30 days to have me report for a physical, and another 30 days to be drafted into the Army (who says the government can’t be efficient sometimes).  I trained at Ft. Lewis Washington for 5 months (in snow no less) and was sent to Viet Nam to join the First Infantry Division.  I was there for a relatively short time, before being seriously wounded in a firefight, and was medevac’d to Japan and then the Presidio of San Francisco for 6 months of treatment and recovery.  While there, my parents, sisters and Nancy Raley  (Class of 65 – a true blue friend) were there to provide support and encouragement.  Once my treatment was completed, I was assigned to the Department of Surgery at the Presidio and finished my 2 year commitment to Uncle Sam.  During this time, I also met my future wife Sandy, an Army nurse who worked in the Operating Room at the Presidio.  We were married two months after I left the Army.
After that two plus year diversion, I started over in Sacramento by returning to American River College for additional terms, got my A.A., and then transferred to Oregon State University in Corvallis Oregon (the Beavers NOT the ducks).  At OSU, I earned a BS and then a MS in fisheries, with a minor in Forest Management.  As soon as I finished my MS, I started a career with the U. S. Forest Service as a Fisheries Biologist on the North Oregon Coast (Hebo, Oregon).  Among the more interesting aspects of my job was being trained to use explosives (NOBODY messes with you when you are using explosives), building fish ladders, and occasional firefighting duties in Oregon, Washington, California and Idaho.  After 10 years on the Oregon Coast, I transferred to a fish and wildlife position in Couer d’Alene Idaho for two years, and then was selected for the District Ranger position in Cordova Alaska on the Chugach National Forest.  Cordova is vintage Alaska, with a population of about 3,000, heavy rainfall and only accessible by boat or airplane.  But it is undoubtedly one of the most awesome, beautiful locations in the United States, with the Copper River Delta, glaciers, mountains, tons of fish and wildlife, a congressional mandate for fish and wildlife conservation and a dedicated cadre of highly dedicated employees on the District.   I was extremely fortunate to spend almost 10 years on the District.
After Cordova, I felt it was time to look at opportunities closer to my wife’s home (east Texas), and ultimately transferred with the Forest Service to Alexandria Louisiana.  The transition from remote Alaska to Louisiana was dramatic to say the least, and we moved in July which was even more intense.   In Louisiana I assumed a fish and wildlife staff position in the supervisor’s office, and continued in that role until I retired in October of 2007.  Following retirement we moved to east Texas, very close to where my wife grew up.  Now that we are retired, we both long to return to Oregon.  Texas politics are definitely not our cup of tea to say the least.  But we have lots of family here, and that is a strong glue for us.  However, we hope to spend future summers in Oregon, and are currently exploring options for that to occur.
Best Friends in High School:  Nancy Raley (who made my senior year worthwhile), Doug Gentry, Greg Soderlund, Janine Cerles and all of my fellow gymnasts on the Encina gymnastics team (We were an awesome team and Dick Wolfe was an awesome coach).
Children:  One daughter and two grandkids who still live in Oregon.
Memorable teachers:  I had a number of memorable teachers, but given that I was not a very good student at Encina, I was probably a challenge for most of them.  It wasn’t until years later that I became serious about my studies. 8/24/15

I appreciate your little tribute page for PFC Phil Lotta. I am the Marine who replaced him. Though I never met him, he's been with me for all these years because of the circumstances I walked into the day he died. I've always been curious about him and it's really gratifying to see a photo at last.

I know that he was very popular among the troops. Many of the Marines of 2/9 had been together in California and Okinawa and were very close. The earliest days of their deployment had been relatively uneventful, so when heavier casualties came in 1966, they took it hard. My generation of Marines were rushed through training and were somewhat suspect in the eyes of the original command. The poor fellow who shot PFC Lotta fell in that category.

I believe I only saw this Marine twice and my recollection is of a big, terrified boy. He was rushed away from the command for his own good and the word that came back to us was that he was in a deep psycholgical crisis. Even so, he returned in about a month. He was treated as a pariah and I felt very sorry for him. The last time I saw him, he and another Marine were running from a bad ambush. One of them went down wounded and I believe it was the same lad. I remember his last name and wish there was a way to find out about him.

The story you tell of Lotta's death is a little different than the one I recall and may be the result of misinterpreted words of Mr. Sutton (our platoon commander) in a letter to his parents. I never knew the details for sure though as it was made clear to me that I should keep my mouth shut and not ask questions. I, after all, was another new guy, and maybe not to be trusted. I had just turned nineteen.

I did conclude after awhile though that it was not possible to fix the blame for the accident. Maybe half of the men thought Lotta may have made a mistake. Even so, they indulged an anger against the shooter because they were so hurt by Lotta's loss. It took a week for them to shake the gloom which was very dangerous since we were engaged with the enemy every day. For the next several weeks, we had casualties nearly every day.

My first meeting with Lieutenant Sutton was strange. He was off walking alone with just a pistol and was obviously deep in thought. As I approached him, I saw that he'd had some sort of emotional release, a plenty unnerving thing to see in your commander! I've always wondered since if he was mentally composing a letter to explain this terrible accident.

Regarding Donald Bakkie 65...

It's been along time since Viet Nam. I was there when Don arrived. He was assigned to our Squad; he was with me. We were standing down after a week-long battle. Waiting for resupplies they set us up on a bridge over a river. I can't tell you where exactly, but I thought we were getting some rest that night. They brought in some new guys that afternoon. Don was one of them. I was set up in a old french tower on the far edge of the perimeter with the m-60 machinegun, and Don was sent with me. Little did we know that the NVA was set up in a small village outside the compound. They had five mortar tubes, RPG's, small weapons. By morning they est. over 150 mortars rained in on us, and rpg's fire direct at us. They never were able to over run us. Thanks to guys like Don. That was Don's first taste of war. I never really got to know Don other than his blonde hair. He looked more like 16 than 19 yrs. We ended up moving back to the area from which we came. I'm sorry to say I only remember Don being there 2 or 3 weeks before he was hit by small arms fire, and mortally wounded. He was a good Soldier. It's been many years now, and some things get a little cloudy for me, but some things never die.

I don't know if Don's parents are still alive or maybe his brothers or sister. Pass this on if you would like.

Born in Sacramento in April 1947 to parents John Henry Sievers and Margery Daviess, Carole began a life-long love affair with the game of golf at the tender age of six. She spent childhood summers playing golf nearly every day, competing and often winning youth tournaments. As an adult, she played in ladies leagues at Pasatiempo Golf Club and worked hard to keep her enviable handicap. Besides being a talented player, she was a fan of the game and enjoyed making five dollar bets on her favorite golfer, Phil Mickelson. Carole graduated from Sacramento's Encina High School in 1965 and premiered as a debutante at Del Paso Country Club. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority at the University of California, Berkeley, where she graduated with a degree in Political Science in 1969. She taught elementary school in Soledad, Watsonville and Santa Cruz and served for many years as a local volunteer for Hollydays and the Daisy. After graduating from college, Carole set out on a grand adventure--sailing for nearly a year around the South Pacific. Her love of water would last a lifetime--sailing, swimming, taking her children on adventure trips to Hawaii and Costa Rica and spending summers splashing around Carmel and the rivers and lakes of Calaveras County. Up to the end of her life, Carole enjoyed peaceful walks by the ocean near her home. In addition to her love of water, Carole's many interests included gardening, gabbing on the phone with her friends and children, watching golf tournaments, spending time with her neighbor's dog, Whitney, and of course, watching the Ellen Show. To all of you, I have sad news.

I've known Terry Mick for about 5 1/2 years and for about six months I was his roommate from late August 2008 until January 19, 2009. For about 3 weeks Terry had become very weak and ill following a hernia operation around Christmas time 2008. On January 19, 2009 he passed away at the age of 62. His brother Mike made all the arrangements and Terry is interned at the Veteran's cemetary in Dixon, California. I have not been informed as to the cause of his death nor do I have any other information.

I know many of you had known him for many years and found him to be a great friend. We will greatly miss him.

Most Sincerely, Mike Flynn

Hank Wilson - an 'activist's activist' for gay liberation
San Francisco Chronicle (CA)-November 13, 2008
Author: Rachel Gordon, Chronicle Staff Writer
Hank Wilson, an "activist's activist" who for three decades made his mark at the forefront of the gay liberation movement in San
Francisco, died Sunday of cancer at age 61. He was a veteran of the health care battles over AIDS and a tireless advocate for the down
and out, friends and colleagues recalled. "He was such an inspiration, Hank the lionhearted," said San Francisco Supervisor Tom
Ammiano, who met Wilson in the mid-1970s when both were gay teachers and joined forces to fight for protections against discrimination in the public school system. "He was committed to social justice." Mr. Wilson had a hand in the creation of more than a dozen community
organizations and events over the years, many of which still exist, although some changed names over time: Gay Teachers Coalition, Bay
Area Gay Liberation, the Harvey Milk Democratic Club, the Tenderloin AIDS Resource Center, ACT UP, the AIDS Candlelight Vigil, Castro Street Safety Patrol, Lavender Youth Recreation and Information Center, Community United Against Violence, Butterfly Brigade, and the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, among others. "He was sort of a Johnny Appleseed of gay and lesbian organizing: wherever he went, organizations sprouted," Bob Ostertag, an expert on gay history who was a longtime friend, wrote on his blog. Mr. Wilson also initiated Ammiano's insurgent write-in campaign for mayor in 1999 against the incumbent, Willie Brown. Although he was unsuccessful when the final votes in the runoff race were counted, Ammiano's bid for mayor paved the way a year later for the election of an anti-Brown slate of candidates who took control of the Board of Supervisors, moving the legislative body decisively to the left. In
2001, Mr. Wilson ran unsuccessfully for the District Six seat on the Board of Supervisors. Mr. Wilson, who lived modestly in a small, rent-
controlled apartment on Market Street, was a grassroots organizer who "did everything but never wanted the credit," Ostertag said. "He
was selfless." Another friend and collaborator, Tom Calvanese, said Mr. Wilson had boundless compassion and was a fierce advocate,
especially for the forgotten and beaten down. Mr. Wilson managed an SRO hotel in the Tenderloin, the Ambassador, for formerly homeless
people living with AIDS. There, he made sure the tenants had clean bedding and food to eat and brought fresh flowers and plants to their
rooms, often on his own dime. "Those things might seem small in the big picture, but they meant a lot," Calvanese said. "A lot of people
called him the Mother Teresa of the Tenderloin." Henry "Hank" Wilson was born in Sacramento in 1947, the eldest of three children, and was gregarious growing up, said his sister, Selby Wilson. Mr. Wilson was  the school mascot - an Apache Indian - at Encina High School and always had a lot of friends. He earned a bachelor's degree in education at the University of Wisconsin, Calvanese said. Mr. Wilson
moved to San Francisco shortly after the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City that marked the beginning of the modern-day gay liberation
movement. In the city, he started as a kindergarten teacher and dived head first into politics to fight a 1978 state ballot measure, the Briggs Initiative, which would have permitted the firing of teachers in California for being gay. The failure of the measure was due, in part, to the efforts by Mr. Wilson, Ammiano and others who spearheaded the opposition campaign by urging gays and lesbians to come out and put a human face on the intended target of the proposed law. "Many, many folks in the community have achieved significant fame for their achievements, and deservedly so," said AIDS community advocate Jeff Sheehy. "But a movement requires teams of people doing
all sorts of work, and Hank was always there, always working as hard or harder than anyone else, always a positive, inspirational force,
always mentoring newbies to the movement, always contributing his wisdom, energy and force of will. "He is the activist's activist,"  Sheehy added. Mr. Wilson's AIDS was diagnosed early in the epidemic, and he developed many infections. "He was really a survivor," his sister said. "Even when he was down, he'd never quit." She credited his longevity in part on his lifelong passion for swimming. Ammiano said, "He acted as a beacon - a longtime survivor who defied the medical odds." In the end, it was lung cancer that killed Mr. Wilson, a non-smoker. In addition to Selby Wilson, of Atascadero (San Luis Obispo County), Mr. Wilson is survived by his brother, Timothy Wilson, of Pioneer (Amador County). A memorial service is being planned for next month.

Bio Update - 4/08 (from 11/00)
We currently live and work in Camarillo and have done so for the last 17 years.  Kathy and I have been married for almost 40 years and have a son 22 (Phil, lives in Bend, OR) and a daughter 20 (Emily, lives at home with us).   We purposely waited about 18 years to start our family; we
were too busy working hard and playing hard; we finally grew up and started a family of our own.
I am on the 1-3 year plan to retire from the Federal Government in 2009-2011 unless I get fed up with the political BS before then.  We recently purchased a new Class A Winnebago motorhome and plan to travel, retire, sell the house in Camarillo, travel some more, and settle in Oregon.
My son Phil is a MMA fighter in Oregon with a record of 4 and 0; he's pretty darn good.  Phil also has a day job as a department manager at
Petco; he loves retail, animals, and is a true extrovert.  He and his girlfriend Courtney are expecting their first baby, a baby girl, Jaedyn Ann Gebauer due on 8/24/08 (our first grandchild!).  Phil occasionally attends Central Oregon Community College but really prefers less academic stuff.
Emily is going to school studying to be a Medical Assistant.  She and her boyfriend Vinny live with us in Camarillo.
All of us are doing great.  The teen years were challenging to say the least.  As G Gordon Liddy says, "That which doesn't kill us, only makes
us stronger."  And we are a lot stronger and wiser today.
Life is good!
Story: Jim Fossi and I would box in my backyard when we were in junior high and Jim would always knock me out; he was so darn quick. Even though I probably outweighed Jim by some 30 pounds he could take me out easily.
Bio: 11/28/00
A brief update as to where we have been, where we are, and where we think we're going: Kathy and I met at UC Davis in 1967, got married the following summer, and continued our studies at UCD.  I graduated with a BS in Chemical Engineering in 1969, Kathy received her BA in Child Development a few years later (maybe that's why she is so effective with me).  We have two children, Phillip was born in 1986 and Emily in 1988.
After graduation we lived/worked in Bakersfield; Los Angeles; Houston; back to L.A.; Milwaukee, WI; Pittsburgh, PA; Annapolis, MD (Washington, D.C.); back to L.A.; Palmdale, CA; Redlands, CA; and now Camarillo, CA where we expect to stay and retire.   In Milwaukee, we participated in cross country skiing and volleyball in the winter, and tennis and sailing on Lake Michigan in the summer.  During our 6-year stay in Annapolis, we lived aboard our 47-foot sailboat and had the opportunity to sail most of the east coast from Maine to the Bahamas, especially the Chesapeake Bay.  We returned to California in 1985 with the intent of being closer to our families and starting a family of our own.
Over the years, I've generally done engineering related program/project/production management in several different areas both in private industry and for the federal government.  Kathy has usually worked in education/social services but has also managed small businesses supporting the boating industry.  Presently, I am District Production Engineer for the Minerals Management Service (Dept of Interior).  The MMS regulates the offshore oil and gas development to ensure that it is conducted in a safe and environmentally responsible manner (sounds very bureaucratic and it is!) (good job, great location!).  Kathy is Director of the Camarillo UMC Child Development Center with an enrollment on the order of 200+ (great job, lousy pay).  My office is about 2 miles from home, Kathy's office is about 1 mile.  Camarillo is an outstanding community for family focused living and activities (kind of boring in a good way, it suits us just fine, L.A. is but a short drive away when necessary, and Santa Barbara is even closer).
Both Phil and Em are very active in the usual school, church, and recreational activities, as are Kathy and I.  We all enjoy camping, both at the beach and the mountains.  Kathy and I have been very active in swimming, biking, running, and triathlons for several years, however our bodies are getting a bit slower and crankier now.

Occupation: Retired from Mcclellan AFB(civilian job) in September 1999. Now I'm a grape farmer and wine maker....
Bio: After graduation, I enlisted in the AF. Did my basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio where they did much placement testing. Ended up in Crypto Maintenace career field and spent another year at Lackland AFB receiving electronics training. Graduated in the top 5% of the class (unlike encina...LOL) and got to pick my next duty assignment. I picked Oxnard AFB down in Southern California. Had a great time down there. Visiting the Wiskey A-go-go then Pandora's Box every weekend. Saw a lot of good groups and meet a lot of people. Received orders for more training in Mississippi on a piece of voice crypto gear. Was really confused about that because we didn't have any of that gear at Oxnard AFB. Little did I know the big plan. Another 6 weeks of training then the orders came. Report to Bien Thuy Air Field, Vietnam. Light bulb went off. That's where this gear is being used. Damn. So, off I went to the Mekong Delta. Initially things were ok, but in late 67 TET started and all hell broke loose. Won't dwell on that but lets
just say I was so glad to be one of the lucky one getting on that United flight home in late 68 and got an early out at Travis AFB. After the AF I grew my hair and pretty much dropped out and zoned out. Ended up getting an electronic apprentice job for Viet Nam veterans at McClellan AFB and married a girl name Terry. We had a daughter Lisa, who has graduated from Davis UC and working for the state now. Terry and I where only married a few years. So, for about 10 years I was pretty much on my own and working and partying hardily. Did many thing at McClellan, from radar maintenance, computer maintenance, quality assurance, metrology, long range planning, workload planning, hazardous/waste management and system development, and when the base was closing work on the team to contract out all the operational and maintenance funtions on the base. Anybody bored yet? Almost done. During this timeframe I met my sole mate Margie and we have been married for over 28 years.
Trivia: Still have my hair, thinning and grey but still hanging in there. To promote the grape and wine business in Placer County a group of us worked on forming the Placer County Wine/Grape Association. I was their president for two years and during that timeframe was intrumental in taking the association to a 501 3(c) non-profit corporation. We now have 11 bonded wineries in Placer County. Tours available.

SACRAMENTAN DIES IN VIET NAM, SHOT IN ERROR BY YANKS
An 18-year-old Sacramento Marine, Pfc. Phillip Anthony Lotta, was killed last week by gunfire from members of his own platoon who mistook him for an enemy. A telegram from Marine headquarters confirming the death informed his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Lotta of 3631 Lusk Drive, that he died of a gunshot wound in his chest. In Viet Nam about a month, Lotta was on a night patrol near Da Nang at the time of his death. The incident is believed to have occured Friday.
His father, a foreman at the American Can Co., said Phillip left Encina High School in his senior year last May to enlist in the Marines. He was sent to the South Pacific in November and on to Viet Nam in January.
His family was informed of his death Saturday morning by a Marine officer, Capt. T. J. Consodine of the Sacramento Marine reserve unit, who said it is Marine Corps policy to have the nearest Marine officer inform the next of kin. The telegram arrived shortly afterward.

Funeral arrangements are pending the return of the body in about two weeks.
Phillip is survived by his parents and a brother, Michael Robert, 9.

For those that remember me, my family and I have been out of the Sacramento area since graduation from high school.

After graduating from Encina, Dave Stoddard and I joined the Army under the buddy program and went to Fort Ord in Oct 1965. After graduation from basic training, I went to Ft Gordon, GA for advance infantry training and then on to jump school at Benning. I have not seen Dave since Fort Ord, has anyone seen or heard from him?

After doing 18 months with the 1st Inf Div in Vietnam I returned to Ft Ord for three years and married my wife of 38 years, Kristy Hart Turner (she attended San Juan and Bella Vista). The way we met, she picked me up at the Village Theater when I was thirteen and we continued a relationship off and on until we married in Folsom in 1968.

I was sent back to Vietnam in 1970 and did another year with the 1st Cav Div.
In all, I did 30 months in Vietnam and nine years in Germany. My wife and I made approximately 20 moves during my 22 1/2 years of service. Yep I'm a retiree, just wish I could afford to retire for good. We have three children, the oldest works for the Department of Defense in England, my second son is living and working here in Charleston, SC and our third child works and lives in the Sierra Army Depot area (60 miles north of Reno). My father and two brothers still live in Sacramento. My mother passed in May.

We returned to California after retiring from the Army and went to work at Sierra Army Depot where I worked for sixteen years. In May of 2005 I took another job with the Army in Charleston, SC and this brings you up to date.

I am (will) retire from here when I hit that 62 mark (thank God, come on Sept 2008) and probably move the wife and I to Tennessee for our retirement life. Plan on playing a lot of golf and traveling with our friends.

Sorry for the length of this email, but wanted to bring those that cared up to date on me and my family. Has anyone heard from Tom Phillips or Scott Hickle?

You all take care,
Sam Turner

The service on Saturday was very much a tribute which could have been titled "What a friend we have in Carol."  The pastor started with a few gentle words about Carol's strong faith and love for Jesus.  He likened her to a pebble that when dropped in a pond radiates outward creating many circles that are connected by that one pebble. .  Robbie spoke about how Carol was a friend to all. How she could make a new friend where ever she was
- in the grocery line, in a restaurant, walking on the beach -- where ever. . and that the newest of her 'friends' was as important to Carol as the oldest ones.  Loretta and Dick spoke of their times knowing Carol since College. Then Mike (of Mike and Michelle) got up and introduced himself.  "My name is Mike, and I am Carol's BEST Friend."...  That said it all.  Everyone laughed, because Carol made us all feel like her Best Friend. .  Many other of Carol's Best Friends spoke. The same theme resounded from each speaker.  Stories of Carol's big heart and enthusiasm, her love of life, her genuine concern for the welfare of other filled the afternoon.  Krista made a special point of thanking all of Carol's friends who were the real caretakers during Carol's low points when the family members could not travel to be with Carol.  The pastor spoke again, committing Carol to the Lord's care, and the gathering prayed the Lord's Prayer together.  Then while the song that Carol loved by Kenny Chesnee 'Live Like You Are Dying' resounded through the church, we all were entertained by a slide show that Robbie had created. . Lots of wonderful photos of Carol's fabulous red-lipsticked smile.  Family and friends glad for one more chance to see that face.  Afterward, the crowd continued to share stories of Carol at a small reception in the Church's 'gathering' room. Ronnie and Robbie we gracious and thanked every one for coming.  The tables were decorated with brightly colored flowers and balloons, and a little bucket of sand with beach toys.  A simple buffet of salads and cold cuts was served.  Very tastefully done.  Carol would have approved. As I was driving away from Carlsbad, the sun was setting over the ocean.  A beautiful sunset.  A perfect ending to a heartwarming day.
.......Patience

Story: I have what you might call an "Oprah" story.  Several years after my divorce my oldest daughter was concerned about my social life (I wasn't) and prodded me to look into Classmates.com for past friends from my elementary school years in Oroville and high school in Sacramento.  One of the names I recognized from Oroville was Martin Blade.  I've known Martin since I was six years old.  His father and mine were best friends so our families spent time together and we shared the same elementary class all the way up to 7th grade.  Martin was my "first kiss" at age 6 (behind the bushes in my back yard) and we "went steady" in third grade.  Life took us in different directions and we lost touch for 30-some years until I emailed him to say hello. He was living in Maryland and retired after selling his share of a successful manufacturing company.  To make a long story short, he moved back to California and we discoved there were still sparks from our childhood "crush." We got married in Cabo San Lucas on November 7, 20

Occupation: Instructional Assistant/Special Education
Bio:  I graduated from CSUS in 1970 with a BA in Social Work. After graduation I became a counselor at Sac. Co. Girl's School. I followed that up by becoming a Deputy Probation Officer for the County, maintaining a juvenile caseload of 86 boys and various adults. the last five years of my career with the County I wrote adult pre-sentence reports for the muni. and superior court. After 14 years I decided to stay home for awhile.
In between all those fun activities I met and married my husband Don. We have been together 29 years and raised four children. My step-daughters were raised by my husband and I from the ages of 5 and 3. We then added another two of our own to the family. I also worked toward an MA in counseling, which I have yet to finish. I am on my second career now. I have in education for the past 14 years in Special Education. Although I don't have my credential I co-teach small groups of children with learning disabilities. I also work part of the year as a test evaluator for CTB/McGraw Hill. I have found teaching to be a true joy in my life.
Our life is centered around family and friends. We are empty-nesters now and loving it.
Trivia: I have remained very close to home ie. Encina/Howe Avenue. We live in Arden Park near Arden and Eastern. In addition to my formal employment, I spent a period of time as a seamstress, working out of my home, making costumes and various other articles of clothing. My daughter Deanne was active in many local song and dance groups and appeared in Best of Broadway(local Production) for two years. Naturally, I became very involved in sewing costumes for the productions. My mother is soon to be 92 and lives
close by, as do my husband's parents. I am also fortunate to have four older brothers and sisters with whom I have regular contact.
We have two dogs(one is supposed to be my sons), two cats, and a parrot who tries to answer the phone before we do.
Friends: Pat McLaughlin,Karen Newberry, Barbara Mckee, Patience Thoreson, Jeannie Kern, many more... I would love to hear from anyone I went to Howe Ave. Or Encina with.
Hobbies: Gardening, sewing, and any kind of craft activity could lead me astray. I also enjoy spending time with friends from work.
Kids: We raised my step-daughters from ages 3 and 5 and went on to have two of our own. Dawn and Dana are both married and have 9 children total, which makes us grandparents 9 times.
Our daughter Deanne and son David both graduated from El Camino. David played football for four years and received the Eagle Pride Award from his teammates his senior year.Deanne was a cheerleader her senior year. She is a free spirit( it must come from her Dad), currently living in the Bay Area. She has worked for a number of years as an admin. Assistant. At the age of 19 she helped a girlfriend drive all the way across the US to Virginia, while towing a trailer. She also decided to live in Seattle for a year. David just turned 21 and is also independent, living on his own. He works in construction and is very responsible for a young man ( if you don't count the time he left to buy a pair of shoes and came back with a paintball gun.)
Grade_school: Howe Avenue along with many others in the class of 1965.
Memorable_teachers: Mr. Carey, very caring. Mr.Day kind, fun, demanding but excellent teacher.
Story: Patience, remember The Pink Panther and the fencing lessons. The summer after we graduated I traveled to England with Pat McLaughlin and her family. We stayed with her Aunt and Uncle most of the summer and had a blast. You can imagine two 18 year old girls roaming around by themselves in Manchester and other assorted places.

A Loving Memory Of ROCKY WILKINSON You left us with the memory of your love, Your thoughts, your Laughter and dreams. No one can take away memories of our time together, The tender moments, the successes we've shared, the road we
walked side by side. You enter your new life a wealthy person. Your roots and mine are forever entwined. - Anonymous G. "Rocky" Wilkinson, Monterey
resident and Executive of Baywood Cellars died Thursday, June 21, 2001 of cancer. Born in Coalinga 1947, graduated Encina High School, Sacramento, graduated Sacramento State, attended college in Arizona and returned to Northern California. Rocky was a star quarterback, entered many dart competitions, was an avid golfer and fisherman. Rocky had a passion and vitality for life and greeted everyone with a very special hearty welcome. Though his sunset has come, the clarity and care with which he loved his family and life, speaks of the great gift he gave us. Rocky is survived by his wife, Caroline Wilkinson, Monterey; Father, Earl Wilkinson, Aptos; Mother, Patricia Toner, Rio Del Mar; Twin Sister, Randyll Scurich, Aptos; Sister Nicki Sorensen, Santa Cruz; Brother, Scott Wilkinson, Washington, Sister Lori Taylor, Santa Cruz. A celebration of life is scheduled in September aboard and ocean vessel. The family wishes to extend a very special thank you to Gail Brocco and Pamela Davis for arriving on the scene like angels in an attempt to help revive Rocky. Occupation: National Conservation Area Manager
Bio: After a couple of years of college in southern California, I dropped out to bum around the West, during which I did
a number of odd jobs including lifeguarding near Malibu and wrangling on a horse ranch.   While lifeguarding, I met
Kelli, who I married in 1971.  We then moved to Oregon and I finished my B.S. at Oregon State University in Range
Management and Animal Science.  Kelli and I then entered the Peace Corps in the Amazon Jungle in Brazil, followed
by two years at Texas Tech University where I got an M.S. in Range Science.  We then moved to Bozeman, Montana,
where I worked for a year at the Agricultural Experiment Station at Montana State University.  I then joined the Bureau
of Land Management in Missoula, Montana, where Kelli earned a B.S. in Psychology and a M.A. in School
Psychology and Counseling at the University of Montana.  She has operated a private practice as a family counselor
for over 20 years.  I have spent 23 years with BLM.  We have also lived in Billings, MT, Oceanside, CA, and have
now been in Boise, ID for almost 13 years.   Since 1995, I have been the manager of the Snake River Birds of Prey
National Conservation Area  -  a very interesting job that keeps me hopping.  The NCA is about 500,000 acres in size
and boasts the densest concentration of nesting raptors in North America.  Over 700 pairs of raptors, representing
14  species nest in the NCA, and another 10 species migrate through the area during various times of the year.  Although
Kelli and I really enjoy Boise, we expect to retire on the Oregon or Washington coast within the next ten years.
Trivia: I attended four universities over 9 years to get my B.S degree.  I've also moved 17 times since high school.
Friends: I've moved so much that I've lost touch with everyone.
Hobbies: Kelli and I love to travel, and have kept ourselves poor doing alot of that.   I also like to hike and fish, which is very easy to do here in Idaho.  I did a lot of running until my knees gave out, but then became a fairly competitive race
walker for several years.  I still do a lot of walking, but now mostly just with my dog for relaxation.
Kids:  Our son, Cary, was born in Lubbock, Texas in 1976 while I was in graduate school at Texas Tech.  By some strange coincidence, he later also attended Oregon State, where he graduated magna cum laude  in Psychology.  During
college, he was on the crew team, where he was twice selected as an All American and Scholastic
All American.  In the summer following his freshman year, he competed at the Junior World Rowing Championships
in Germany.  Following graduation, he spent three years on the U.S. men's rowing team, where he travelled
extensively for various national and world competitions.  We also travelled to watch him compete.  It was a great time.
He married a wonderful girl two years ago and retired from the rowing team last year.  He's now finishing his first
year at the University of San Diego Law School.

Bio: I was a Russian interpreter in the Navy and got out in 1969. I became a professional student in Monterey for 4 years, transferred to CSUS and then Moss Landing Marine Lab back in Monterey Bay. I studied subtidal algae and showed everyone Craig Hunter's cheerleading picture; I think he is still working there.
I dropped out of gradschool in 1980 to manage an oyster farm in Marin County for a couple years, then bought a oneway ticket to Hawaii and wound up on the equator monitoring the 1982-83 El Nino. Then while travelling up and down the westcoast selling dive charters, I became reacquainted with a lady I'd first met in Monterey. She was living in Seattle and was willing to store my surfboards behind her couch. After working for environmental consulting firms, I got a job at The Seattle Aquarium and have been here for 12 years. I am mainly the salmon biologist, but also take care of the many saltwater fish, algae and an octopus or two. We've got a cool 400,000 gallon tank with steelhead, chinook and coho salmon.
Trivia: I spent 2 years working on Polish, Russian, Japanese and Korean fishing boats in the Bering Sea. It was great food, high adventure and kept me at sea. I also cooked on a research boat doing anti-submarine stuff out of Santa Barbara, a tugboat hauling fuel barges to Alaska and the Aleution Islands and a cool sailboat out of Oahu.

Occupation: prosecutor
Bio: Displaying very bad timing, I flunked calculus in my second semester at ARJC in the spring of 1966.  The government responded with remarkable efficiency, reclassifying me from 2-S to 1-A within a couple weeks.  Up to this point my only thought about the military was to avoid it.  Now that it was inevitable, I chose to enlist in the air wing of the Marines, entering active duty in January 1967.  I felt that I needed some time to grow up and figured that the Marines would be an interesting adventure along the way.  The Marines trained me as an aviation ordinance man.  At that point the growing anti-war efforts did not mean much to me.  I accepted the traditionalist's view that this was a time of national emergency and that my obligation was to serve.   Expecting to live forever, I volunteered for a Vietnam tour, arriving at Da Nang on May 15, 1968.  There I was assigned to Chu Lai, 50 miles south of Da Nang on the coast, where I was assigned to group supply.  Expecting to get an exciting job on the flight line hanging ordinance on F-4 Phantoms, I asked for a transfer out of group supply after six months.  Instead, I was transferred to the bomb dump where we assembled air dropped munitions.  Mostly my job was to put high drag fins on 500 lb. bombs.  I rotated out of Vietnam back to the States on June 9, 1969.  When I was honorably discharged in January 1971 anti-war and anti-serviceman sentiment was pretty strong.   My basic feeling toward the military had changed into one of anger at being used for something ugly.
Anger was a great motivator.  Determined to avoid being the equivalent of a Corporal the rest of my life, I graduated from ARJC with an AA in 1972 and then Sac State in 1974 with a BA.  I met and married the sweetest woman, Cindy Chambers (Hiram Johnson HS, 1968; Sac State BA, 1973), in August 1973.  While in Vietnam I decided that becoming a lawyer would empower me to avoid being on the short end of someone else's bad decisions.  We moved to San Diego where I graduated from The Unv of San Diego, School of Law, in December 1977.  In June 1978 I learned that I had passed the CA bar exam, but I remained unemployed and it was my turn to have a job.  Cindy had had a great experience growing up in a post-war Air Force family.  With a good deal of trepidation, I was commissioned as an Air Force judge advocate in September 1978.  We were first assigned to Wurtsmith AFB in northern Michigan where our son Jess was born in 1979.  From 1980 - 1983 we were assigned to Aviano AB in northern Italy where we thoroughly enjoyed the people and their country.  Our daughter Katherine was born in Vicenza, Italy in 1982.  I was the Air Force's defense counsel for the many bases in Italy.  The job involved a lot of assignments from site to site defending airmen.   Cindy was pretty tolerant of the travel before Kate was born.  I couldn't believe they were paying me to do this job as I also defended airmen in Turkey, Germany and England.  Leaving active duty in 1983, I stayed in the Air Force Reserve where I remain today as a Lieutenant Colonel.  After four years as an Air Force civilian attorney, I went to work for the San Luis Obispo District Attorney's Office in 1987 where I remain today.
Our babies are now on the verge of starting their adult lives.  Katie is a rising senior at Paso Robles High School who hopes to go on to UC Davis.  Jess is an Army ROTC history major student who will graduate from Furman Unv, So Carolina, in the spring of 2001 and be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.  Cindy is working to get her two books published.  We live in sunny Paso Robles on the lovely central coast of CA.

Grade_school: In Reno
Junior_high: In Reno
Memorable_teachers: Jack Carey--He created a world of music which will live with me always.  He was a very "patient" choir teacher.  Even sang in his youth choir at the Methodist Church while I was a student at Encina.  If I could tell him one thing, I would tell him "I only wanted to be a "Pip" never Gladys Knight."  I ran into him Christmas 1999 when I took my mother-in-law to a Christmas Eve celebration at a Presbyterian Church in Sacrament.  I saw the back-end of the director of the church choir and thought that something looked familiar.  Sure enough, it was Mr. Carey. I did speak with him following the service, but, naturally he did not remember me.
Also, Mrs. Isabell Wilkerson-English.  I was never the brightest student, but I LOVED English, and it was Mrs. Wilkerson who helped me enjoy English, and it certainly has benefitted me to this day.  Mrs. Wilkerson..."I love to read now too."
Also Mr. Will Stephens.  I had Mr. Stephens for advanced typing.  He gave me "confidence in myself" by having me do the typing for his "Spikettes".   My greatest competition in typing was my brother Phil...he and I were always competing for the highest typing speed.  Mr. Stephens would recall Phil...he was always trying to get him to stop whistling.
If I could talk to Mr. Stephens, I would like him to know my typing speed was up to 110 wpm (before computers).
Favorite_memory: Being able to sit on the Senior Lawn.   Also, some of my classmates would have never known this, but I got in trouble with Mr. Bassett and was taken home. The reason I was in trouble was because I was making flyers to organize a Senior Cut Day when they said we couldn't have one.  Seems to this day I'm always organizing something.
Although not a "favorite memory" I'll never forget the emotion all of us shared together when President Kennedy was killed.  None of us were embarrassed to cry.   I remember the staff bringing televisions into the cafeteria so we could watch the news as it was happening.  A very sad, sad day.

Bio: After graduation I attended CSUS and graduated with a teaching credential.  I taught for a few years, married and moved to Yuba City where my husband was stationed in the Air Force.    We lived there for a time then moved to Sunnyvale so he could go to Physical Therapy School.
Most of these years were spent having and raising our 5 children (which was and is a blast ),  then in 1991 I went back to school to get my masters' degree in Counseling Psychology.   I recently opened a private practice teaching individuals and groups principles of "quantum thought"
and conscious creation techniques (along the lines of folks like Deepok Chopra and Wayne Dyer) so that they can participate in creating the life they chose to live.  It's gratifying to watch people begin to change their personal and/or professional lives for the better by knowing just  how their
particular mind works. As for my personal life, after 25 years of marriage, my husband and I divorced 4 years ago; after that I took back my maiden name.  Friends and family keep me happy and busy!  Life is very good!
Trivia: Probably the most interesting and surprising thing (according to others) is that I had 5 children.  That sound like a lot to most people, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.  My kids are so much fun and have taught me so much!!!  Besides, after three kids, you don't notice the additions!
Friends: I had so many friends, Kathy Byrne, Debbie Gerth, JoEllen Jessup, Muriel Watts, Toni Richmond, Toni Arnold, Patience Thoreson, Dan Findley, Bob Miller, for starters!
Hobbies: Actually my hobby and my work are one and the same; in addition, I like working in my garden.
Kids: My oldest daughter, Stacy, (27) lives in LA and works for SNAP.com selling internet advertising.  My oldest son AdaM (25) is in his second year of graduate school getting his MSW
Brendan (21) has started a clothing company with Adam's girlfriend, Chrissy (and it's growing like gangbusters) and he also models for various magazines (look for him in Abercrombie and Fitch!--he's a cutie)
Kal (19)is our live-wire and is going to college and making plans to have a great life!   Tori (17) will finish high school a year early and go on to college next year.   (She might possibly get into the "modeling
thing with her brother.)  All are healthy and happy kids with a lot of plans and ideas!
Grade_school: I went to elementary school in Oroville, California
Favorite_memory: I really don't have one particular memory.  They were good years with good people.

Bio: I finished my education in increments sandwiching a family in between graduating from high school and finishing my Master's Degree in 1996. I am divorced, have two daughters, Kristen who is 28 and Erin who is 24. Both graduated from rival El Camino, but managed to turn out quite well despite that.
I have worn a variety of professional hats. Most of the years since High School have been spent in the medical profession. I worked for an ophthalmologist for several years, had Kristen. Worked out of my home for an insurance investigation agency for two years, had Erin. When she was 6 months old, I began working for an Obstetrician/Gynecologist where I stayed for a little over 13 years. I went back to CSUS in 1982 and finished my Bachelor of Science Degree in Exercise Physiology in 1984.
l began working at UC Davis Medical Center in 1984 as a clinical research coordinator in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. I conducted clinical drug studies for two years. I moved over into AIDS research in 1987 when an opportunity to work with Dr. Jonas Salk became available. Again, I coordinated the clinical drug trials with the AIDS and Related Disorders Clinic until 1994. Concurrently, I became the Program Manager for the UCD/Sacramento AIDS Education and Training Center in 1990 and have held that position since that time. Additionally, I am on the faculty of the West Coast Center for Palliative Education; a trainer with Sacramento Health Care Decisions/ECHO Project; an instructor for UC Extension and I am a clinical social worker for the Sutter Hospice Program.
