Congratulations to the United States Ryder Cup team for the greatest comeback in Ryder Cup history... Did anyone attend the matches? In case you are wondering about the attachment, it is a small image of the emblem which will be on the homecoming clothing. The last of the reunions has come and gone, the final Encina event of the year is the homecoming party on October 22nd. CLASS OF 1974 I was privileged to attend the Class of 74's 25 year reunion last Saturday. The 74 reunion committee basically started from scratch and did a wonderful job of contacting and tracking down their classmates. I now have faces to go with many who were only names or email addresses. Many thanks to everyone for their hospitality and to David King and Stacey Heidig for standing me a drink! Everyone was very friendly and I had a wonderful time. I finally left around 230am and the party was still going strong. Stacey Heidig created pictures boards using yearbook pictures and adding funny comments. This was fun to look at except for the awful picture of me... Allen Cull showed me his personal website with a Cottage School third grade class picture which showed a young Stacey Heidig. The class of 74 is fortunate to have technowizard Steve Palmer as webmaster. He had his computers set up so that folks could check out the Encina website and 74 homepage. And in an Encina first, they got everyone to stand in a circle while Steve took pictures and created a 360 degree Quicktime VR panorama which he will be adding to the 74 homepage. The pano is a 360 degree picture of the class which you can "pan" around in order to see everyone. Very cool! After Steve showed me this I bought some software so I can make these panoramas too. I've been enjoying reading posts to the encina1974 egroup. Here are a few excerpts -- Vicki Adamek Mongan wrote: "Hi All, Too bad you couldn't be there Paul and Steve -- you both had such great bios -- but mark your calendars for 5 years hence. If it was as fun as last night's party, you won't want to miss it! I want to thank the reunion committee for all their enthusiasm and hard work. I'm sure I speak for many when I say that we appreciate that you guys weren't slackers like the rest of us who happily reaped the benefits of your hard work. Okay, a couple of fascinating observations from the evening...every single person I talked to was convinced he or she was a a social misfit, unattractive, a loser -- or something else unsavory in high school. I loved it -- even those I thought were demigods thought they were dreck. The second observation is that our lives turned out pretty differently than we thought they would in high school, yet most seemed quite content. And many of us are still works in progress but are much more reflective and gentle than we were five years ago. We're now far enough along in the journey that we can look back and see the twists and turns in the road...and know there are more ahead. We seem to be living proof of John Lennon's thought that life is what happens while you're busy making plans. Anyone else brave enough to share their thoughts? Perhaps we can write a book... Everything I Need to Know I Learned at my High School Reunion...for us late bloomers." Brent Welch wrote: "What an experience. First off, thanks to the whole reunion committee for putting this together. I for one had never attended a reunion before and was a last minute holdout. My high school friends were mostly from other schools or were already out of high school. I had no idea that anyone would recognize me. My wife thought for sure no one would. I must admit, I didn't recognize some of the people there, but then again, it HAS been 25 years! It was a shame that some of the people I remember most didn't attend, but I was pleasantly surprised when some others showed up that I never would have thought would have attended. Somehow, we need to get a hold of the "missing in action" to at least let them be aware of the next reunion. That way they can make a choice. I will bet many didn't know when or where. How about a list of those we know where they are and get them in touch. I bet there are those who are aware of the website that can get in touch with some of those who don't. You know, if you tell 3 people and they tell 3 people.... With that in mind. The people who I would have liked to have seen and didn't show were: Robert Zdybel Janet Boutelle Dee Dee Decker Bruce Garcia ( did he graduate in 73??) Lana Garcia Steve Hellewell Greg Gerth All I can think of now. Take care all and thanks again for those who showed and for the reunion committee for all of their hard work." Bob Goosmann, reunion chairperson, wrote: "Hi Everybody, First, I want to thank everybody who showed up Saturday night. As recently as a couple of weeks ago we were so short on RSVPs that one reunion committee member mentioned the word "cancel"! (this was NOT taken seriously). Since Vicki is asking for observations, I'll give a couple of mine: I've been to all of the reunions, and I noticed a definite shift in attitude at this one. No one seemed concerned any more about social standing, who was who in high school, or any of that crap. We seemed to have an excellent cross-section from our class, and EVERYBODY seemed to get along famously. The comment about social misfits is pretty funny, because I doubt that anyone felt more like a social misfit in high school than I (pathological shyness will do that to you). I know I've come a long way, and I saw much the same in many of the other attendees at the event (I'm still in shock at seeing Brent Welch and Rick Greer in three-piece suits!). Thanks to all of the single women who I badgered into dancing with me :-). It's pretty funny when you dance more in one night at your 25-year reunion than you did in your total four years in high school. One final note: we have a LOT of commemorative key chains left over, due to a minimum order requirement. So, if you couldn't make the event and would like one (or two), or you did attend and would like a couple extra, you can send me a self-addressed stamped envelope. I just need to find out what the postage requirement will be--I'll e-mail everybody with that along with my address in a couple of days. Thanks again for contributing to a wonderful evening!" Gerri Annenberg Rotta wrote: "I just wanted to thank the reunion committee for their time and efforts in making our 25th reunion a successful one! I think everyone had a great time and I know that I did. It was great to see everyone and get a chance to talk to some old friends and get to know others better! Thanks again!" CLASS OF 1979 The class of 79 sounds like they had a big crowd at their reunion last Saturday night! Susie Jones Durst 79 is going to email me digital pictures from the reunion for the 79 homepage. There's been lots of traffic in the encina1979 egroup. Here are a few of the early comments -- Laura Gray wrote: "Apache's 1979! Wow- what great fun the reunion was! It was a good time all in all! The after party was tops. Funny how people really don't change much in 20 years. Sorry I had to miss the picnic on Sunday. Vada thanks for being the host! Hope you have not been "86'ed" from all Hilton establishments. They will likely forgive and forget by the time the 30 year Reunion comes around. Hope to keep in touch with classmates of 79! As time continues to fly bye- Life just seems to be getting better and better for everyone. Really Good to See Ya!" Susie Jones Durst wrote: "It was GREAT to see everyone Saturday!!! I had a blast! For those who were unable to come...you were truely missed!!!! And to Laura Graff Allred.....APPLAUSE!!! Great reunion!! Thanks" Vada Dean wrote: "Dear '79: Thanks to all of you for such a great time. I especially thank everyone for accepting my wife, Stacey, like one of the family. I always knew I came from a special group of people and Stacey was able to discover this on her own. Talk about a flashback...Tell Bob Hookano about a gathering then open the doors and party 'til the sun comes up (complete with the "cops" visiting us several times). And believe it or not I'm still in good standing with the Hilton (amazing how accommodating corporations can be when money is at stake!). I'll miss you guys until the next time so lets be sure to use the e-stuff to keep in touch. Fondest Thanks...Vada" There's been a lot more traffic on the encina1979 mailing list. HOMECOMING The Second Annual Encina Homecoming party on Friday, October 22, 1999 has reached critical mass and continues to grow. Over 80 alumni have RSVPed so far and this does not include spouses or family!!! Check out the list below to see who's RSVPed. If you haven't RSVPed and plan to go, please let me know so we have a reasonable headcount for the Candlerock. I've created a special mailing list for those interested in the homecoming game. Email to encinahomecoming@egroups.com will go to those who have signed up for the game. We're having a friendly competition between classes to see which class has the most alumni at the party and game. So far the class of 73 has shown the most school spirit! However, Janice Barnes 89, chair of the 89 reunion committee wrote: "O.K., I really, really hate to have anything bad said about my class. "Sad" is not a good word to use when describing my class. Do you realize we lost only one (1) rally and one (1) homecoming float competition in all our high school years. 1989 defined school spirit. Here is the list of to be attendees for the class of 1989 thus far. I'll be in Sacramento starting next week, I'll hunt people down if I have to. Michelle Amyot Danny Amyott David Francis Shannon Bice Legion Edward Shaffer Ann Marie Hovie (because I'll bring her myself) Julie Hill Hoang Randy Onstine David Otero Janice Barnes to be continued... The Class of 1989 always meets and exceeds those challenges posed to us. Be afraid, be very afraid!!!! But Lorna Cline 72/73 wrote: "The bar area can hold 100! Plus there is the little bar area and the whole rest of the bowling alley! They do have 6 pool tables and some dart boards in the area, they usually only have a few regulars in the bar at 5 on Friday nights. As to families showing up, From 3:30 to 5:30 they have glow-in-the-dark bowling, (you know strobe lights, black lights, glowing balls) it is fun, the music gets a little loud once in awhile. They also have Laser X for those with kids (or grown-ups) that want to play laser tag, and the arcade. Then at midnight starts glow bowling again. So I think that even if more than 100 show up, there will be enough room for all!!!!" I will give you an update, and see you there! P.S. The Alumni shirt idea is great. I've written down the "Apache Fight Song", by memory, believe it or not!. It's about 98% accurate. I'm making copies and volunteer to lead the "fight song" cheer at the game, along with any other drunken idiots willing to participate. That would definitely include Dieterle and Robichaud." Linda Weatherford Ballance 62 wrote: "I wanted to let you know that my sons have been talking to some of their friends and several have indicated they plan to attend the "99 Alumni Homecoming Party" and/or Game. Just think what could happen to the "2000 Alumni Homecoming Party"! I look forward to meeting you and all the rest of the faithful Encina Alumni. See you there!" Kate Grebitus 75 wrote: "With four brothers and me, I'm trying to get their classes and mine moving on this. I keep running into Encina alumni all over the place. They just need the info to get out to them, alias the "Internet Snail Trail". Thank You for putting it all together...see you there." THOUGHTS ABOUT THE HOMECOMING PARTY Jeff Frei 75 has volunteered to lead the Encina fight song during the game. He wrote it down from memory: "Encina High Fight Song Apache Braves fight for Encina High, And have the will to win, it's do or die! For we are all behind you, lead the way, So come on boys let's win that game today! (Rah,Rah) We'll sweep the other team right off their feet, Show them the Apache spirit can't be beat! As gold and cardinal banners proudly fly, Cheer for Encina High!" Can anyone verify the words? Jeff is 98% sure he got it right. If we have time, we can practice a few times at the pregame party so we don't mess it up during the game. Rett doesn't think we need or have time for any organized activities. But he suggests that maybe we can practice a few Apache/Bulldog cheers before the game. And that we regroup at the game in the parking lot so that we can enter together and hopefully sit in the same area of the stands. Please write if you have suggestions or comments... If this works, I might just start believing that the Internet has some practical value! Love and here's hoping, John Newby" I asked John Newby whether he was an Encina alumni and he answered: "I am not an alumni from Encina -- I'm a Brit that spent many years in Africa. Pat and I go way back and I would really like to contact her again. The Pat Matteson I'm looking for is an Integrated Pest Management specialist. Searching around on the web, my bet is that she lives in Alexandria, VA. It was whilst hunting that I saw Encina High's website and thought I'd give it a try. You never know your luck! No way could he be an Encina alum--?? Anyhow--fill me in! I'm waiting! This is too great. Chris" It was a great feeling to reunite two old friends, even if only one was an Encina alumni! I asked Chris what Pat is doing now. Chris wrote: "Armed with the knowledge of German she acquired from Encina's Miss Wolz (whom she remembers fondly), Pat spent her Junior year of college in Gottingen, Germany--and has never been content to live in the U.S. since. She became an entomologist (someone who studies bugs), and has been working ever since as a specialist on agricultural pest management and pesticide policy in developing countries. Pat is currently living in Hanoi, Vietnam, where she is directing a project for the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization. Prior to that, she lived in Honduras (chiefly consulting on pesticide policy for the World Wildlife Fund), and before that, Sri Lanka, and before that, Nigeria. Fortunately, the guy she married (another entomologist) is as restless and as fond of life in exotic places as she." John Newby wrote: "Hi Harlan! Well it looks as though I have struck pay dirt, as they say! Thanks to you, Pat's sister Chris has confirmed that it is in fact the 'right' Pat and that my bona fides stand up to scrutiny. I'm thrilled that all of this has worked out so nicely...and so speedily. In the meantime, as a result of a parallel track identified on the web, I have also received a second e-mail address for Pat in Vietnam. Can't go wrong. Anyway, thanks very much for your help in all this -- you got the ball rolling! By the way, I live about half way between Geneva and Lausanne, in Nyon, on the shores of Lac Léman.
