These are the last reunions scheduled for this year. The 74 reunion committee was kind enough to invite me to their reunion. For those of you attending the 74 reunion, I'll see you on Saturday! I have heard it numerous times in all dayparts. Great job, Class of '74, in getting the word out!" HOMECOMING Momentum is building for the Second Annual Encina Homecoming party on Friday, October 22, 1999. I challenged the classes with the most email addresses to show some school spirit and the response has been gratifying...overwhelming even. There is a snack bar on site but we want to make sure that we eat something before the game. The Candlerock has agreed to the pot luck as long as we don't bring in beverages. We will filter out to the game (7:00 start time) and return to the Candlerock or if folks want to head to another location after the game, just let me know and I will follow. GO APACHES!" This is the current RSVP list: 1961 Linda Hoganson John Russell Carol Mills Russell 1962 Linda Weatherford Ballance 1965 Pamela Russell Scully 1971 Nancy Cooper Manly Jim Mosier 1972 Carla Bee Bowden (probable) Lorna Cline Susan Kehoe Jacobson Darrell Mitchell Kerry Shearer Debbie Sprague Mitchell Stan Sedilko 1973 Rett Smart (organizer: irsmart@ix.netcom.com ) Lucia Churches Lorna Cline Gragg Stephanie Dugas (maybe) Sally Enos Kelcey Hall Scott Harris Gary Henderson Kathleen Ketcherside Arceo Harlan Lau Nancy Patton Debbie Richmond Patty Russell Mosier Carolyn Teel Rand Loni Whalen Mellerup 1974 John Bain Dwight Hansen Terri Jurich Howard 1975 Jeff Frei 1976 Kim Culver Taylor (Kim's son attends Golden Sierra!) But Lorna Cline 72/73 wrote: "The bar area can hold 100! Plus there is the little bar area and the whole rest of the bowling alley! They do have 6 pool tables and some dart boards in the area, they usually only have a few regulars in the bar at 5 on Friday nights. As to families showing up, From 3:30 to 5:30 they have glow-in-the-dark bowling, (you know strobe lights, black lights, glowing balls) it is fun, the music gets a little loud once in awhile. They also have Laser X for those with kids (or grown-ups) that want to play laser tag, and the arcade. Then at midnight starts glow bowling again. So I think that even if more than 100 show up, there will be enough room for all!!!!" See the homecoming pages for details about this year's party and a description of the First homecoming party last year: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming.htm Please RSVP me if you plan to go. If we can get a good nucleus of people to commit, that should draw in other folks. Talk this up in your class group and let's see if we can round up a big crowd of alumni at the Homecoming game this year! Let's see which class has the most school spirit... so far it's still 73! HOMECOMING EMAIL Teacher Christine Kojima wrote: "If I am in town at that time, I will be there. We are in the process of selling a home in Tahoe and need to take care of business. I think I will ask other former Encina teachers to join us." Lorna Cline 72/73 wrote: "CHALLENGE for the Class of 72 - according to the last update that was sent (Thursday) I am the only member of the graduates of Encina in 1972 that has signed up for the Homecoming event - what's going on? I know that not all of us have stayed in Sacramento, but a lot of us have and others aren't too far away! Last year there were several members of the class of '72 that made an appearance for pre-game fun and at the game, and this year promises to be even better! We won't sit there feeling sorry for the players (they seem to be off to a great start!) **a lot better than Rio's team this year!!** Sign up now - http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming_form.htm see, I've saved you all that work to find the form! SEE YOU THERE!!!!!! LORNA CLINE GRAGG" To which Susan Kehoe 72 wrote: "Okay, Lorna--I can not stand a CHALLENGE! I submitted my name for the Homecoming event; I just hope TRAIN is playing at the Candlerock Lounge October 22! Susan Kehoe Jacobson (a.k.a. Suekeo)" And Stan Sedilko 72 wrote: "Consider your challenge met times 3. I called Debbie and Darrell Mitchell and we've marked the evening of Oct. 22nd on the calendar. If everyone finds 2 each we'll fill the stadium and probably get the "Candlerock" shut down! I'm looking forward to seeing some old friends, I know I had at least one or two. Kerry S. are you gonna be there? Bye for now, Stan" Kerry Shearer 72 wrote: "The gauntlet has been thrown, and it is down. I simply cannot let a personal challenge by Lorna, copied shamelessly by Susan, and turned into some Amway-style, exponential multiplication exercise by Stan go without a response. While I will choose to voluntarily overlook Stan's suspicious juxtaposition of his wish to see "old" friends right next to MY name, not that I'm sensitive to age or anything like that, I cannot...and will not...pass up an opportunity to spend several precious hours of life at the Candlerock Lounge. Christi and I are absolutely planning to be there** , and look forward to seeing Debbie, Darrell, Stan, Eileen, Lorna, Susan, and everyone else! ** (Committment not valid in the event of: major fire, earthquake, flood, hurricane, tornado, drought, plague, or other act of nature; if we win the Lotto, hit it big at Reno, or discover Publisher's Clearing House at our front door even though we've never bought a stinkin' thing from those elderly-swindling hustlers; if our son comes home from college, close family members die, simply get sick, or perhaps even just develop a hangnail. I live in the LA area and due to professional considerations I am unable commit to this event with certainty, however if time permits I will attend the game and party." Cathy Harlan 80 wrote: "I wish I could attend, however, that is the night before my wedding and we have rehearsal and all that fun stuff!!! I will be there in spirit...." THOUGHTS ABOUT THE HOMECOMING PARTY I'll have nametags available on which people can write their name and class year. I'm thinking about creating a special mailing list just for homecoming party attendees. I'm looking forward to meeting many of you with whom I have only exchanged email up till now. Lorna Cline 72/73 and I are looking into having polo shirts made up for the party for those who are interested. Being physically challenged, I don't have a letter jacket like Rett, although I do have two nice polo shirts which Michael Billing 71 sent me! Let me know if you are planning to attend and would be interesting in buying an Encina polo shirt to wear to the game. David Knepprath 74 has a t shirt printing company (www.davidkla.com ) and has volunteered to help out with Homecoming shirts and give us a special deal. Thanks David! Rett doesn't think we need or have time for any organized activities. But he suggests that maybe we can practice a few Apache/Bulldog cheers before the game. And that we regroup at the game in the parking lot so that we can enter together and hopefully sit in the same area of the stands. Please write if you have suggestions or comments... FOOTBALL Deborah Young wrote: "Our first game against Mira Loma on 9/10 was victorious, 56 - 0. We had five quarterback sacks, at least four other turnovers by the defense, and obviously the offense team was on fire. Our second game didn't go as well, but we played an equally talented team of Christian young men from Capital Christian School, 43 - 34, on 9/18. Our offense played their hearts out, our defense was surprised to find out that Capital Christian was prepared for their secret defensive plays, even with three quarterback sacks, we didn't prevail. Our next game is away as well, at San Juan this Friday evening. Come support the team!" ALUMNI SEARCH 1989 Vetica Miller KAREN MCCLELLAND LEE I received this bio from Karen McClelland Lee, who taught my yearbook class back in 73: Occupation: Retired Counselor Bio: Running into past students is a real hightlight in my "retired" life. So many imes I hear, " I know that voice, or I know your face..." It makes for a few minutes of looking back; remembering; reminiscing. I taught English-is that spelled correctly? I have a business (just getting off the ground) and lots of grandchildren to keep me happy and occupied. I think about and miss every kid who walked through my door, (even if I couldn't remember all names). Kids: Both Amy McClelland and Dan McClelland graduated from Encina. Both are doing great, as is brother Steven (Kennedy H.S.). I told ya, computers are the thing! All 3 are involved. BETSY DOZIER 73 Diane Schoenborn Kelly 73 sent me Betsy Dozier's email address. Some of my contemporaries may remember Betsy from Jonas Salk. She then attended Rio and Stanford and currently lives in Dearborn, Michigan, where she is mother to two 17 month old twins! Betsy is also in contact with Jonas Salk/Rio classmates Frank Boutin and Shelley Kurtz. Let me know if you would like to contact her. MEMORABILIA Mike Kelly 73 wrote: "On a related note... I guess we have an antique business because we're pack rats. We've collected everything imaginable over the years. It's neatly organized and retrievable. So when the call for Encina Memorabilia went out... it wasn't too difficult to find some stuff. Both Diane & I have our Apache megaphones that were distributed at the first freshman rally. Diane also came up with an Apache tumbler. All yellow (supposed to be gold) plastic with cardinal (well, probably red) Apache imprints. I also remembered seeing my PE Shirt in the last couple of years. I thought I had used in as a paint rag. But I checked my rag box, and there at the bottom, was an "Encina Boys PE" shirt. Not sure whether any is suitable for Applebee's, but figure we'll drop the stuff off at the school in the day or so." HURRICANE FLOYD Andrea Heston 78 wrote last week: "You asked for info on Hurricane Floyd. I'm in New Castle, Delaware and a State of Emergency was called last night for the whole state of Delaware. That isn't saying too much as Delaware is not that large. We have severe flood warnings here and the rain totals have been high. Some of the totals have been as high as 10" of rain. Right now it is just pouring outside. We had been in a drought here and wanted some rain, but this was just a little too much! Schools were canceled today and most of the major employers had employees report to work only to have them sent home by noon. The winds haven't been that bad here at my house, although I've had a large shrub uprooted by the winds. My back yard is flooded, but my problems are minor. There have been power outages and the news keeps reporting about foolish people who have had to be rescued because the didn't heed safety warnings. One tragedy is three girls were playing in water near a storm drain and one girl was sucked into the drain and luckily came out the other end. She was treated at the hospital and released, but the two other girls are still missing. We expect the storm to pass us soon and we probably have a couple more hours of rain ahead of us. So far no thunderstorms or tornadoes. I'm still trying to adjust to the severe weather that we have on the East Coast. That's the latest from Delaware." Dan Dickison 73, who lives on an island on the South Carolina coast wrote: "We dodged a bullet this time. As of Tuesday evening, my house was basically ground zero, but thankfully Floyd lost some of its strength and took a more northerly course. Here we have had some power outages and some trees down, but no major damage. Most people are griping about the evacuation gridlock they suffered trying to get out of town. I was spared that as I was away on business. All the best for now."
