The last two trips we spent all our time on the "baby" rides but this year my boys were old enough and tall enough so that we were able to go on all the roller coasters. I know the Disney rides are tame compared to some of the new thrill rides, but Space Mountain is about as much as I can handle now a days. And I only had to go on Small World once. Legoland was a big hit. I think the boys would have been glad to spend the whole day at Build and Test, where you design your own car and race other children's cars down a simple soap box derby type track. The process of copying the successful cars, refining their cars, racing over and over again was amazing to watch. They want to build a race track at home now. Thanks to Jack Dieterle 75, who lives in Escondido and recommended the "Claim Jumper" restaurant in Carlsbad. We tried to go there Saturday night after Legoland but it was packed and the wait was too long. REUNIONS The 69 and 73 reunions have come and gone. Details below. This weekend is the 89 reunion. Have a great time! If you have siblings or friends who might not know about their class reunions, please pass along this information. The classes which plan to have reunions this year are: 1964 1969 Saturday, August 21, 1999 at Ancil Hoffman Park Alan Dankman (adankman@worldnet.att.net) 1973 Mini-reunion: August 21, 1999 Rett Smart (irsmart@ix.netcom.com) 1974 Saturday, Sept 25, 1999 at Sacramento Red Lion Inn Bob Goosmann (Magusbob@hotmail.com) 1979 Saturday, Sept 25, 1999 at Hilton off Arden Way Laura Graff Allred (pacwest@foothill.net) Great Reunions: info@greatreunions.com 1984 1989 Saturday, August 28, 1999 at Howe Park Center Janice Barnes (jabarnes@dttus.com) 1994 Candy Mleczko (candym229@hotmail.com) CLASS OF 1969 REUNION Reunion organizer Alan Dankman 69 wrote: "The reunion was fun. It was a nice picnic. When I left it was getting dark and there were still a few people milling about and talking. There were probably 50 people at the peak. I've had a couple of calls and emails with very positive things to say about it. " Christine Rea 70 wrote: "I am a member of the Class of '70 who snuck into the '69 reunion. There was not a huge turnout, so those that didn't show, we missed you. Alan Dankman went way out of his way and had great food prepared. It was fun to see people, some of whom I had not seen in 30 years. Chuck Dunn was the life of the party, as usual, and brought some of his Cds from his current band that he performs with "Larry Yates and the Blues Monsters". He was also there with his lovely wife Leslie Lee Dunn. I even got to see the first boy that ever kissed me!! It was nice in the shade and warm in the sun. I even had a chance to jump and swim in the river." Kent Randles 69 wrote: "It was great. Got there about 2 PM, and didn't leave until almost 9! I took a bunch of photographs, which I need to get developed and scanned. Several people thanked me for the web site, which I carefully and gratefully explained was done entirely by you! I have several ideas for the '69 page, so I need to re-read your messages to me about actually doing something with it. " CLASS OF 1973 MINI-REUNION Organizer Rett Smart wrote: "We were few but mighty. Lucia took photos and will be willing to share. Marilyn Palmore gets the longest travelled award (happened to be in town from MAUI with her daughter who is going to Sac State) although Cindi Connell was in from Boulder on her way to an extended trip through Ireland, Russia and points beyond. I wish more people could have been there but I really enjoyed the ability to really sit down and talk to people at length. Our class has really spawned some great people. Almost everyone who came, stayed until 11:00 at Scott's and then the hard core element ended the evening at Mike Fahn's (until after 1:00). Can't wait until the Homecoming event." Bob Nannini wrote: "Howdy, Harlan! The mini-reunion was quite the blast-o-rama in my eyes! There was only a handful of us, (less than 25), but it gave us all a chance to just sit and chat and laugh and reveal secret fetishes...well, you know how it goes. Yes, the picture queen, Lucia Churches, was in full operational mode. I'm thinking there's much blackmail money to be made; I'm planning on staying on Lucia's good side. It was great of Rett and Lorna to put this little event together for us. It was a jolly-good time!" Lucia Churches wrote: "The Class of 73 Mini Reunion was great fun! It was a small crowd of between 15 to 20, but it gave everyone the opportunity to catch up and spend some quality time together. We actually got "kicked out" of Scott's Seafood at about 1 a.m...they literally gave us "last call" and turned out the lights! It had been years since we'd been thrown out of a bar, and we were all very proud!!! :-) After leaving the restaurant, a small group of us continued the party at Mike Fahn's house (some things never change). We woke us his sweet and gracious girlfriend, Wanda, who was very good natured about seven drunks decending upon her home in the middle of the night. We looked through old memorabilia that Mike had saved from concerts he promoted. It was really cool! I drank shots of tequilla and got home at 3 a.m.!!! Too much fun!!! The classmates who attended included Marti Buckles, Cindy Connell, Rett Smart (and wife Teresa), Mike Crosby (and wife Terri), Steve Crosby (and wife...I'm sorry I don't remember her name), Mike Fahn, Eric Carleson, Bob Nannini, Lorna Cline, Marilyn Palmore (and daughter Brianne), Kelcey Hall and Lucia Churches. (I apologize if I left anyone out!) Hopefully this can be an annual tradition. Thank you to Rett for putting it together, and to Lorna for reserving the location. What a wonderful, special group of people. We are all lucky to have each other. Best, Lucia P.S. Of course I took many pictures and will share them with you when I have them developed!" Lorna Cline wrote: "The turn out for the mini-reunion was okay, (we could have had lots more) but our classmates that did show up, had a good time, they included, Rett Smart and wife, Mike Crosby and wife, Marty Buckles, Cindy Connell (she's heading to Ireland soon, on vacation - have a good time Cindy!) Mike Fahn, Marilyn Palmore and daughter (all the way from Maui!), Kelcey Hall, Lucia Churches, Lorna Cline-Gragg, Bob Nannini, Steve Crosby ('72) and wife showed up later. Help, did I forget anyone? We were missing some classmates, that knew about the reunion, but were unable to come at the last minute. But I would like to take this time to ask the class of 73 to think about taking a minute and calling a classmate that had the misfortune to pick up a viral infection that has left him paralyzed from the waist down. He is Lee Elliott and he can be reached by phone in Woodland at 669-7314. Give him a call! That's about it Harlan, hopefully we will have more classmates at Homecoming!" Kelcey Hall wrote: "I am so glad that I went. At first I didn't think I would have the time or extra energy, but then at the last minute I decided I wanted to go. It was an intimate evening with a lot of laughing and talking. With such a small crowd it had it's advantages in that everyone could visit with each other, no music blaring, so you could hear each other. It was like a "small party on someone's patio". Lorna picked a great place and Rett was so generous in providing appetizers for the group from Scotts; I tried to insist on helping him with the bill for that, but he was not going to hear of it. What a sweetheart he is; and I met his wonderful wife for the first time, Teresa. Marilyn Palmore got to be there because she is in town from Maui to help her daughter enroll in Sac. State and get set up at Marilyn's Mom's house! So it was an extra treat to visit with her. Lucia, Marilyn, Lorna and I sat around a table and talked "girl talk" except that one of the "girls" was none other than Bob Nannini. (Gee, tough gig Bob!) We were complimenting him on being one of the girl's best friend...and how we could talk about anything in front of him (hormones, PMS, weight gain, face lifts, etc.) Then Marilyn said how she loves bald men, so the waitress came over and rubbed his head while Lucia took a picture of it. ( I think Bob was having a little slice of heaven if you know what I mean!) We laughed so loud and stayed so long that we closed the place down. Then when we finally had to leave (they were closed) some of the last few went over to Mike Fahn's house ( Isn't it always "party at Fahn's"!!!) I was a dud. I went home. So next year we will do it again, and this time you will be there!!! (come to think of it, I think there is a picture of both Marilyn and I rubbing Bob's fuzzy head!) That's all you probably ever wanted to know and more, eh?" Come now, some of you will remember the few issues of our school paper that appeared in between sometime during the '73 -'74 year. It was called "The Underground Dirt." I remember "The Tomahawk" during my freshman year '72-'73, it was the last real looking newspaper the school had through '75-76. The rest seemed to be more like newsletters that were only a page or two long. I loved the name "Encina Asylum." But how could you forget a name like "The Underground Dirt?" The '73-'74 year began with no newspaper for quite awhile, so I wouldn't say the "Tomahawk" turned into any other paper as it was buried. (Pun intended.) Then I remember during that school year issues of a new attempt at a paper appeared. It was main stream, supervised and handed out in classrooms, not really underground. I remember it as only one page. The last copy had a notice at the bottom that said "final issue" long before the school year was out. I'm sure others will back me up about the existence of the fleeting mysterious "Underground Dirt." A lot of students must have been involved with it. Finding an old copy could be a Rosetta Stone!" So, anyone have a copy of the Underground Dirt paper?
