Date: Tuesday, April 27, 1999 10:36 AM Subject: Encina Update (open house/newspapers/columbine/reunions/siblings/baby/classof77/teachers/found/figenshu/whats new/forwarding) ENCINA ALUMNI, The Update is early this week because of the Encina Open House on Wednesday. The next Update will probably be next Thursday. OPEN HOUSE Heddy Crowder wrote that Encina is having an Open House: "On Wednesday, April 28 we have Open House from 5:30-8:30pm The Bar B Que (free) is 5:30-7:00 in the quad, a small business meeting in the cafeteria at 7:00 followed by classroom visitations. Some alumni might want to stop by and see their old stomping grounds." I thought some alumni in Sacramento might be interested in attending. I would go but I live in the Bay Area. If you do attend the Open House, please send me your impressions so I can share them in the next Update. NEWSPAPERS I've created a new section called Newspapers: http://www.encinahighschool.com/newspapers/newspapers.htm For the 1958-59 school year I've scanned in the first four Encina newspapers Vol 1, No 1-4. Randi Muller 62 was good enough to loan me her precious copies for scanning. Thanks Randi! http://www.encinahighschool.com/newspapers/class1958/index.htm These first issues provide a fascinating glimpse into Encina's first year. The first issue has no name and asks students to name the newspaper. Yearbooks were on sale for $3.75. The second issue talks about the trouble deciding on a mascot. It appears that the Apache mascot was the most popular but couldn't achieve a two-thirds majority. There's also a picture of 62 webmaster Barbara Rea receiving the top magazine sales award and winning a Polaroid Land camera! http://www.encinahighschool.com/newspapers/class1958/images/581110_page3.JPG It wasn't until the third issue in December that the newspaper was known as the Tomahawk and the mascot was the Apaches. For the 1972-73 school year I've scanned in the May 31, 1973 Senior issue which John Ward 73 was kind enough to loan me. This issue was dedicated to the graduating seniors of my class and was very nostalgic. There are pictures of Swift Dickison, Pat Buckner, Brent Bombola and Gary Phillips; an article about Mr Figenshu winning the teacher of the year award, and another about Carole Takeuchi and Bill Chambers getting married. Fun stuff. If you have back issues of the Encina newspaper and would be willing to loan them to me, I will scan them in and publish them on the website. COLUMBINE Last week I mentioned that Lori Shearer 72 lived in Littleton,CO, home to Columbine HS. Bruce Hunt 73 wrote that he thought he saw Lori Shearer 72 on the TV news and that her daughter had been one of those injured at Columbine. I've been corresponding with her brother Jim Shearer 78 and I'm happy to say that Lori Shearer and her family were not involved! Jim wrote: "I spoke with my sister last night. It turns out that she knew one person that was killed in the accident (through her church). My niece, Chelsea, graduated last year from Littleton High School (and not Columbine). She said that the incident has traumatized the small town and moved it from the safest town in Colorado to the least safest town in Colorado in just one day. Thank you for your concern." I've been reading all the articles about Columbine and this struck too close for comfort... According to the a diary the police found, the perpetrators had been planning this for a year, stockpiling guns and bombs. It makes you wonder what effect strict gun control laws like those in England or Japan might have had? While it may be true that "guns don't kill people, people kill people"; you'll have to admit that it's a whole lot easier to kill people when you have a gun. Without guns, I doubt these boys could have killed many people before being overpowered. And even if you believe in the need for guns for hunting or self defense, how do you justify offensive weapons like the TEC-9 machine pistols and assault carbines, whose sole purpose is to kill people? I don't believe adults should have access to such weapons, let alone children. Comments? REUNIONS The classes which plan to have reunions this year are: 1964 1969 Alan Dankman (adankman@worldnet.att.net) 1974 Bob Goosmann (Magusbob@hotmail.com) 1979 Laura Graff Allred (pacwest@foothill.net) Great Reunions: info@greatreunions.com 1984 1989 Janice Barnes (jabarnes@dttus.com) 1994 Candy Mleczko (candym229@hotmail.com) If you have a sibling or friend without email from one of these years, please let them know about their class reunion! Please contact me if you know anyone on the reunion committee for the classes of 64 and 84. REUNION COMMITTEES We located two of the missing reunion committee members. Thanks to Deanna Luna 82 we know the whereabouts of Diane Hagey 82. And ever helpful Heddy Crowder knew how to contact Cindy Parsons 79. SIBLINGS This is great! I love all the mail I've been getting with sibling information. On the other side of the coin, I've been getting lots of mail from those wanting to contact the siblings who have been listed. Keep those siblings coming! Just a note to tell you, "Mikaela Susan Brown," was born 4-17-99 at 9 lbs. 5oz. and 21" long! Beautiful and healthy, thank God! :-) CLASS OF 77 Encina twins John Hyland 77 and Theresa Hyland 77 celebrated their 40th birthday party in style on Saturday night at the Lawrence Hall of Science. My sister Laurie Lau 77 was in attendance along with about 10 other Encina alumni. Laurie took pictures and I'll publish them on the 77 homepage in a few weeks. Laurie also said she'll scan and email some of her pictures from the 20th reunion in 1997. TEACHERS Stafford Boyd 88 writes that "I currently am in my second year of teaching at Encina". I believe Charlie Reade 76 also taught at Encina before moving on to Mesa Verde HS. Any other Encina alumni who also ended up teaching at Encina? FOUND Stafford Boyd 88 wrote: I am close friends with both Dave Francis and Ryan Meckfessel. In fact, Ryan was my best man last October for my wedding. FIGENSHU Many alumni have written about Mr Figenshu and I've sent them his address in Sacramento. I would like to know whether anyone has actually talked or visited Mr Figenshu and can tell me his phone number/email and how he's doing? I sent him a postcard myself a few weeks ago but I have not heard from him. This means that I have your email address but do not have your permission to publish your email address address. Consequently, classmates who wish to contact you must use the "care of webmaster" form, which I must then MANUALLY forward to you. Due to the growth of the Encina online community, the number of forwards has risen dramatically and has become very time consuming for me. I would like to encourage, no implore, those of you on the Encina mailing list to please list your email address in the directories. Even if you don't want to submit the contact information form for whatever reason, just write and give me your permission to publish your email address in the class directory. Running the Encina website is very time consuming and your help would be appreciated! Please don't feel shy about writing me. All of the Update material comes from fellow Encinians. And if you don't want to be quoted, just say so in your email. Harlan Lau 73 Encina webmaster www.encinahighschool.com harlan@rambus.com
