You can be assured that John was very humbled at the thought of all the prayers from all the friends he knew in his short life. John was a very loving husband and father. We miss him terribly. We know that he is in a much better place, and is in our hearts always. Thank you, again Catherine Johns" CLASS DIRECTORIES AND PRIVACY The class directories contain contact information for Encina alumni. As you know, this information is available to anyone on the internet, which is why many of you are reluctant to list personal data like address and phone number in the directories. It would be easy for me to password protect the class directories to restrict access to just Encina alumni/staff/parents. The upside is that access to personal contact information would be restricted to those who knew the password (essentially those on the Encina email list). I have a family website with a family directory which is password protected and I know that many of my family members only listed their contact information with the assurance that it was not available to anyone other than family members. The downside is the inconvenience of remembering the password and the fact that alumni would be forced to contact the webmaster and "register" in order to obtain the password. Which is not necessarily a bad thing but it prevents casual browsing. After all, if you're looking at the website for the first time, if you're able to see all the listings in your class directory, you might feel it is worth it to sign up. However, if the directories are inaccessible you might decide it's too much trouble to contact the webmaster just to see what's in the directories... I would like to hear your feelings as to whether you think the class directories should be password protected. Would you list more personal data if it was? Do you think it would discourage or impede growth of the directories? VIETNAM Tom Larson 64 wrote: "Rick Philbin (not sure of the spelling anymore) class of '64 was reported to be the first man from Sacramento killed in Vietnam. Probably in '65 or so..." Jay MacIntyre 61 wrote: "i'm not sure if he was class of 61 or 62 but Herb Frenzle(spelling) was killed there" Chuck Long 65 wrote: "The two guys who come quickly to mind are Rick Philbin 64 and Dan Twitty 66 or 67. They used to call us into the principal's office on our 18 birthday and make us sign up for the draft on the spot." Bill Hesser 64 wrote: "In response to the person who wanted to know if any Encina men were killed in Viet Nam the answer is yes. At least one and that was Rick Philbin class of 64. There were numerous people from Encina that served over there Dave Turner, Terry Allen etc. You might want to take a 1963 or 64 yearbook down to the Viet Nam Memorial and match some names if you are ever in Washington DC. Not only did some Encina men die there there were also some from Mira Loma and El Camino. I was fortunate enough to serve in Europe rather than Viet Nam. I did however experience the humiliation of other veterans that came home to the jeers and spitting and other degredations that the fine upstanding American people subjected us to. People I knew lost limbs, sanity and peace of mind oveer there. One of your 1963 alumnus is in a state hospital after commiting random shootings on Highway 80 a couple of years ago. He was a normal fun loving person until his experience in Viet Nam. Yes there were many that sacrificed much over there just to be ridiculed when they got home for doing what at the time they thought was right for there country." Greg Vitaich 62 wrote: I'm responding to Randi Muller-Kempers' query about Vietnam losses. As far as I can tell, and I've done some digging, Herb Frenzell 62 and possibly Russell Arent 62 are the only losses. I'm aware of several others that served and, thankfully, made it home safely: Dennis Yeast 62, Nevin Nyswonger 61.Surely there are many others of whom I'm not aware. I'm happy that Randi thoughtfully brought this idea to the Site. Thank you for taking the time to include this remembrance." FAME Lauren Zdybel 80 wrote: "You might want to include Kirt Shearer (80) in your hall of fame. He owns a recording studio in Sacramento (the name eludes me right now) and has recorded and mixed albums for some notable artists, including Bobbie Brown, Tony Toni Tone (or however you spell it) and Cake (Kirt mixed the single that has been at the top of the charts recently. I believe he also does sound effects and music for local theater productions (Sacramento Light Opera, B Street Theater)." Elaine Hamby 77 wrote: "Just a quick one to say that I saw Richard Montoya and Culture Clash do a "reading" performance down in Berkeley in December, and they were fantastic! You should really try to catch them at any/every opportunity. Richard is very gracious and has such a clear artistic vision that I've become an instant fan, and I'm telling everyone to look for him/them, and to read his book. Hopefully the Culture Clash web site will be updated regularly with performance dates, etc." BASKETBALL Deborah Young wrote: "1/8/98 Encina (74)!WIN! STORE Many thanks to all of you who made purchases linked to the Encina Store! According to the eToys report for December 1998, Encina alumni placed 14 orders for $1147.37, resulting in a 25% commission of $286.84 for the website! According the Amazon.com's report for December 1998, Encina alumni placed 19 orders for $315.53, resulting in a 5-15% commission of $20.33 for the website. So at no cost to themselves, the participating alumni have supported the Encina website to the tune of almost $300. Please continue to use the Encina store in the future. Current stores the Encina website is affiliated with are: amazon.com, cdnow, barnesandnoble.com, eToys, fogdog sports, beyond.com and reel.com. I haven't received reports from the other stores for which Encina is an affiliate yet but I think they'll be small. When I do I'll put together an income/expense summary for the website.
