Date: Tuesday, January 05, 1999 4:04 PM Subject: Encina (website/class of 1976/john johns/teachers/neil young/40th anniversary luncheon/athletic funding/basketball/missing/what's new) ENCINA ALUMNI, Happy New Year to everyone! I received lots of email over the holidays so here goes. WEBSITE I've added class directories and homepages for the class of 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. Nina Shoman 99 hopes to have a class homepage soon. There's a Missing page which lists the alumni and staff currently being sought after. This is the same list I include in my updates. I've added an Experts page. This lists Encina alumni who are willing to offer expert advice on their specialty. They often have their own business or are willing to consult on the side. CLASS OF 1976 Matt Shelton has the Class of 1976 homepage online. Matt's done a very nice job and he's even added pictures to the bios. Check it out. JOHN JOHNS Craig Moseley 72 sent me John Johns obituary. Here are some excerpts: "Died 12/5/98 of cancer in Salem at the age of 45. Born in Sacramento 11/20/53. She is now teaching at Mira Loma High School. (at least she was 3 years ago.)" NEIL YOUNG Deborah Young writes: "Would you take off the solicitation for donation for Neil Young. We were unable to collect the funds required in the amount of time allowed. Thanks to all of those who did donate, I will make sure that the Booster Club gets the money!" 40TH ANNIVERSARY LUNCHEON Nina Shoman 99 writes: "In case you have not already heard from the alumni that came out to the luncheon... it was a success! I was so happy with the response from the alumni. Steve Palmer from '74 came and with him came a few other alumni, i believe from c/o '73, and '71... They even brought a large ice chest with them filled with soda, and that was great! I have to thank you a bunch for posting the invitation and helping me out. The alumni being there put the finishing touches on the event and made it perfect. With out your help this would not have been possible. I hope you will be able to join the Class of 1999 in an event we have in 1999, we are almost there, and I must say there is a big excited bunch of seniors at EHS! Please do not forget that you have a big group of kids at Encina that looks up to you with great admiration for maintaining ties as an alumni to Encina and your willingness to help others." After reading the alumni notes Nina Shoman 99 wrote: "I was very pleased to read the responses to the luncheon from the alumni that attended. I have Steve Palmer's email address from c/o '74, but would like to contact the other attendees directly to express my gratitute for their attendance and support. Do you know how I would be able to contact them? I noticed they refered to me as the Student Body President, the mix up is very understanding, even the students at EHS get us confused, but I'm the Senior Class President, not Student Body, sorry for the confusion! I also read the notice that Mrs. Young posted about the loss of "Lil" Reggie (son of head basketball coach- Reggie Vaughn). The loss of "Lil" Reggie was very hard on the basketball team and the students who held close ties to Reggie Sr. and his son. I attended the funeral today and it was very emotional. The attendance was huge to show respects to the boy that was known as "the guy's lil mascot" for the varsity basketball team and many alumni that played basketball for Encina and found out attended along with a large amount of the staff, students, family and friends of the family. We had dedicated the 40th Anniversary luncheon on Thursday to celebrating each other, life and ourselves. I cannot stress that enough... and that is another reason why I look up to the alumni that are reaching out to help Encina even after they are gone...they continue to celebrate their EHS years .... they are celebrating life." ATHELETIC FUNDING Coach Russ Hibbard writes: "Following is a list of items and costs for athletics that we are in need of replenishing, but lack funding. The location of the tournament is at the "Full Court" gym, at 8711 Elder Creek in south sac. The easiest directions is to take Watt Ave, south towards Elk Grove, and make a left at Elder Creek, the gym is located on the left and in what appears to be a warehouse district. In fact the gym is a converted warehouse. There will be a fundraiser on January 15th at Encina High School after the memorial tournament. The Pasta Feed is to raise funds for the Basketball Team at Encina, the charge is $7.50 per person. Please come and support the team! Let me know if you need tickets, you can reach me at dyoung@mp.usbr.gov." BASKETBALL NEWS Deborah Young writes: "12/29 Update on Encina Basketball! The Bulldogs are currently in the Christmas Cordova Classic Tournament. Last night was our first game against Cordova, we lost 64 to 75. (personal comment, we didn't pay the referees) The Top Scores were from Reondre Walker with 27, Juilo Murillo with 10, and a tie of 9 from Mike Pritchett and Wes Baggs. Leading Blocks with 10 was Neil Young. Although we lost, this was one of our better games with fewer turnovers. 12/30 Last night we played Woodland and lost by 3 points, the final score was Woodland 68, Encina 65. Top three scores were from Reondre with 22 points (& 7 steals), Wes Baggs with 15, and Juilo with 11. Neil Young led the pack with 10 Rebounds and 5 Blocks. I know it seems that the Bulldogs haven't won in awhile, but keep in mind that pre-season games are played with Division I, II, and III teams, and Encina is in Division IV. 12/31 Last night was the final game of the Cordova Tournament, and we won! Encina 66 vs. Del Campo 57. This was a fast game and the stats were evenly spread. Top three scores were from Reondre with 19, Wess with 19, Kwesi Brydie with 10, and Juilo with 6. 1/4/99 Happy New Year! I hope that your holidays were pleasant! This past Saturday, the Bulldogs had their final pre-season game! We played Sacramento High. The score was Sac High 77 and Encina 72. The Top Three scores were from Reondre Walker with 23 points and 6 rebounds, Wes Baggs with 12 points, and Juilo Murillo with 10 points. Top rebounds went to Tyler Thompson with 8, and Top Blocks went to Neil Young with 5. The team played a great game! We play our first league game tonight 1/5/99, at Encina against Colfax! Come support the team!" BOOSTER CLUB The Booster Club has decided to continue Bingo on a month to month basis. Fantasia Bingo Hall is seriously considering going to electronic bingo, and this promises to increase profits. The Booster Club could still use all the support available, physically, emotionally, and financially! Thanks for all the posting you've been handling for the Booster Club! We have a Booster Club meeting scheduled for 1/12/99, come join us!" MISSING No finds, one addition. Now sorted by class.
