Subject:Encina (Jack Dutton/bulldogs/email/homecoming party/74 homepage/Timothy Schmit/famous alumni/missing/newcomers) Date:Tue, 10 Nov 1998 18:38:08 -0800 Encina alumni, Look out below. This is a long one... JACK DUTTON JoAnne Smith, the Encina registrar, tells me that Jack Dutton is alive and well and enjoying his retirement! I called Jack this afternoon to say hello and he sounds just the same as he did 25 years ago. I'm glad to retract my earlier reports of his demise... Jack doesn't have email but if you would like to write or call him let me know. Jack's going to have his daughter email me so I can send Encina emails via her email address. APACHES TO BULLDOGS Hayley Fojut '90 wrote: "The class of '91 should have graduated as the Bulldogs. We were the last of the Apaches in '90, and the decision on the mascot was given to all the classes that year. There were 4-6 choices given. The only other one I remember was Wolverines. Which was the one I wanted, but the school overall decided on Bulldogs 'cause there was the off chance that this one teacher would bring his dog to the games, hence we would have a real mascot. Anyway, that's the way I remember it happening." This was confirmed by Scott Bennett '91: "What I meant was that the class of 1991 was the first graduating class of the Bulldogs. We took a vote of all the students on a name. A few of us were pretty upset about the change." Sheryl West '68 wrote: "Regarding your question about the mascot name change. The Sacramento Bee did a fairly extensive article on the issue. As I recall (and remember this is my recall) it seems to me that an American Indian student took offense to the title and stood up for the select few American Indian students at Encina. Claiming the name was disrespectful due to the fact the Apache tribe was only one tribe and the American Indian students were in reality part of several other tribes other than the Apache tribe. My heritage is in part American Indian, neither part is Apache. I was never offended however, times have changed and so has our awareness. Just remember this is only from memory. You might want to check with the Sacramento Bee historian." EMAIL As you can imagine, I send and receive a lot of Encina email so sometimes by the time I receive a reply, I've forgotten what the subject was. So when you send me email, please sign with your full name and class year and include a copy of the mail I sent you. Unsigned mail or mail signed with just a first name means I have to look up the email address. And mail without a copy of the original mail is also hard to understand when the response just says "yes" or "no" without any surrounding context. As you've noticed, I tend to quote people from the email I receive. I try not to include anything too personal or embarrassing and I hope I haven't offended anyone by this practice. If you don't want me to quote you put something to this effect in your email. HOMECOMING PARTY Stephanie Woo was the teacher who videoed the alumni at the homecoming game! Stephanie has taught in the business department since 1977. She teaches a broadcasting class as part of the Business Academy. The students produce a weekly show which is shown to the entire campus. Stephanie gave Heddy Crowder a copy of the video to mail to me. I'll try and figure out how to put a clip of the alumni interview on the website. I'm hoping Stephanie can email me a video clip. If you would like to write Stephanie, I'll be glad to forward email to her. CLASS OF 1974 HOMEPAGE The class of 1974's homepage is online. Check it out. Very well done! The class of 74 is gearing up for their 25th reunion next year... TIMOTHY B SCHMIT John Knurr wrote me that Timothy Schmit '65 is the bass drummer for the Eagles! My wife's cousin is married to Tom Phillips 65 who is also a musician so I thought Tom might know Timothy. Last night I told my wife that Encina alumni Timothy Schmidt plays for the Eagles expecting her to be impressed. And she tells me that she already knew that and wasn't I listening when we saw Tom at the Jazz Festival and he was talking about this very thing. In fact, Tom and Timothy are good friends, Tom knows all the Eagles and Tom saw Timothy recently. So there... Kathleen Johnson 65 wrote: "I went to school with him since the 3rd grade... actually played in the grammar school band with him and we took ballroom dancing classes together. He was at the 25 and 30 year reunions and was just the same old guy I have known since about 1955." Chuck Long 65 wrote: "Timothy B. Schmit is the bass player for the Eagles. I suppose he could be contacted through their agents. He attends the reunions, so someone knows his address. He was in the Contenders and the New Breed bands with Tom Phillips, so Tom may know how to contact Tim." Timothy even has his own fanpage: http://members.aol.com/nikkidh/voices.html INTERESTING ENCINA ALUMNI So now I'm wondering what other famous or interesting Encina alumni are out there. Please send me your nominations and I'll start a new page on the website. To get things started here are a few examples from the class of 73: Scott Mathews, a music producer, song writer and multi-instrumentalist who's produced, recorded or performed with artists like Barbara Streisand, Eric Clapton, Boz Scaggs. See Scott's bio: http://www.encinahighschool.com/class73/bios2.htm Mike Fahn 73 is an entertainment producer. He was the promoter for "Tower of Power" who were playing in Sacramento the weekend of our reunion in August. Bob Nannini 73 does the "Top 5 Bob" list Tuesday mornings for FM 92.5. See: http://www.encinahighschool.com/class73/top5bob.htm for an archive of past top 5 lists. Dan Dickison 73 does freelance writing, among other things, and had a sailing article in Sports Illustrated recently. I haven't gotten around to adding his piece to the website yet. Mark Rasmussen 73 started Rasmark Jet Charter in El Paso, Texas and flies Lears all over the United States. Not to say these are the only interesting 73 alumni, just the ones which occur to me at the moment. So send me your nominations for interesting/accomplished/famous Encina alumni and let's see what we've got... MISSING We didn't do so good on locating missing classmates this time. Instead of identifying missing classmates, I received more requests. Help!
