Date: Friday, November 06, 1998 10:07 AM Subject: Encina (amazon link/encina store/Jack Dutton/John Knurr/Apaches&Bulldogs/Missing) Encina alumni, AMAZON LINK Thanks to all of you who wrote with advice and suggestions regarding non-profit organizations, handling taxable income, etc. Jeffry Mann 79 suggested running the website as a business (sole proprietorship) for now. This seems like the easiest way to get started so I'm going to open a new checking account to keep track of income and expenses. Income will consist of commissions and donations from classes or alumni. Expenses will consist of those incurred by the website and webmasters. Expenses include domain registration, web authoring software, reference yearbooks and things of that nature. I'll have to file an additional tax form but I intend this to be a non-profit business so in the unlikely case that there's any "profit" I'll donate it to some worthy Encina cause or maybe use it to advertise the website. I'll have to file an additional tax form too but this approach avoids incorporating a non-profit, setting up a board and the work of administering a non-profit. If we can find an existing Encina non-profit who is willing to administer website monies, I'll be glad to switch over at that time. The income and expenses of the website will be published or emailed quarterly so alumni can be assured that everything is aboveboard. ENCINA STORE I've added an Encina store page to the website: http://www.encinahighschool.com/store.htm . This page will have links to stores which pay commissions. Alumni can support the website by simply accessing these stores from this page. These stores can tell where customers linked from and will keep track of purchases. Currently amazon.com is paying a 5% commission on purchases linked to the Encina website. This is a great deal while it lasts. I was looking around last night and it appears that many stores pay commissions to provide an incentive for websites to link to their stores. I'll be adding links to other popular retail sites such as CDNow. If you know of other such stores that you buy from regularly, please let me know. Please bookmark the Encina Store! JACK DUTTON Math teacher Jack Dutton was on the last missing list. Linda Goff 67 wrote to say that Jack passed away this year and she has a copy of his obituary. I had Jack for math one year and I have fond memories of him as I'm sure many of you do. JOHN KNURR Thanks to Ken Johnson 67, I heard from John Knurr this week. John taught music from 1966 to 1974. Here's his picture: http://www.encinahighschool.com/class73/yearbook/teachers/page8.htm John lives in Wisconsin now but still visits Sacramento for the Jazz Jubilee or J azz Camp. You can write John at jknurr@elknet.net . APACHES/BULLDOGS There seems to be some question about when the Apaches transmogrified into the Bulldogs. Scott Bennett 91 wrote that this occurred in 1991. But does this mean the class of 91 graduated as Apaches. Or as Bulldogs? Or half and half... Rett Smart wrote that he would be interested in knowing the process that Encina went through in deciding to make this change. What were the other mascots proposed? Was this driven by students or administration? I would appreciate a description from someone who was there. MISSING CLASSMATES We located three out of six on the last list! Here's the latest list: Janice Barnes 89 Julie Baxter 83 Bonnie Lambert 63 Robert Watson 79 (new) Mark Posehn 79 (new) Frances Oates 74 (new) Mike Lamb 74 (new) Laurie Lindseth 74 (new) Greg Roeszler 74 (new) Sara Schuler 74 (new) Julie Stewart 74 (new) Write me if you're looking for someone or know the whereabouts of any of these alumni. Have a good weekend. Don't forget to link your amazon.com purchases to the Encina store! It doesn't cost you anything and it benefits the Encina website. Harlan Encina webmaster
