Subject:Encina (amazon link/missing classmates/what's new) Date:Wed, 4 Nov 1998 10:18:17 -0800 Encina alumni, AMAZON LINK The amazon.com link idea was a hit! Everyone who wrote was in favor of adding a link to amazon.com as a way to generate income to pay for website and webmaster expenses. Then Aaron Ford '88 and Jeff Stoddart '68 pointed out that the amazon.com commission is likely to be taxable income. Jeff suggested setting up a non-profit organization/account while Aaron said "If anyone suggests setting up a non-profit organization to deal with the small amount of revenue, Just say NO. I looked into this several years ago and the overhead costs, paper work, regulations, etc. is prohibitive." Do we have anyone out there who has experience or is knowledgeable about this area? I don't want to personally receive the amazon.com money and have to pay taxes on it. I personally like the idea of setting up an Encina Alumni Association or the equivalent. Initially it could be the recipient of amazon.com monies or any alumni donations. Aaron suggested having a trustworthy person to be treasurer and keep track of income and expenses. But it sounds like the administrative overhead is excessive. Another thought it is use the existing Encina Booster club, if it has non profit status. Perhaps they could keep track of the income and expenses and keep anything left over??? Or could we do something as simple as opening an Encina website checking account? When classes set up checking accounts to hold reunion monies, are these nontaxable accounts? Who pays the taxes on the interest? And the IRS always wants a tax id for bank accounts. I hear that Rio Americano has an alumni organization which collects annual dues. Alumni get a newsletter but they have no website that I know of. Also, the alumni have their own room on campus! Pretty cool. Can anyone check with Rio and see how they set up their alumni organization? I would appreciate it very much. If anyone has experience with the nuts and bolts of setting up a non-profit organization I would like to hear from them. Do we have any lawyer types who would be willing to do this pro bono? Or is there a simpler solution like a special checking account. I'm going to put adding the amazon.com link on hold for now...
