BARBARA CUSHMAN ROWELL 66 Thank you to Jane Castle 66 and Julie Cox 83 for letting me know about Barbara Cushman 66's untimely death... Monday, August 12, 2002 World-renowned wilderness photographer and writer Galen Rowell, and his wife and business partner Barbara Cushman Rowell, a photographer and writer in her own right, died early Sunday morning in an airplane crash outside of Bishop, Calif. The Rowells, who were returning to their Bishop home from a circumnavigation of the Bering Sea, were passengers in a small privately owned plane that went down south of the Bishop Airport. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by NTSB and FAA officials. The plane carried four people and there were no survivors. Tom Reid of Bishop piloted the plane. The fourth passenger was Carol McAfee, also of Bishop. Galen is survived by two children from a previous marriage, Nicole Ryan and "Tony" Edward Anthony Rowell, and two grandsons, Forrest Avery Ryan and Colby Dustin Ryan. Barbara is survived by her mother Lucile Cushman, brother Robert Cushman, and nieces Mariah and Grace Cushman. Born Aug. 23, 1940 in Berkeley, Calif., to a college professor and a concert cellist, Galen was introduced to wilderness before he could walk. He began climbing mountains at the age of 10 and by age 60 he had completed more than 40 expeditions on all seven continents and to both poles. He has produced 18 books of photos and text that exemplify his special brand of participatory wilderness photography in which the photographer transcends being an observer with a camera to become an active participant in the image being photographed. In 1984 he received the Ansel Adams Award for his contributions to the art of wilderness photography. Since 1986, he has written a popular monthly column for Outdoor Photographer Magazine and in 1992 he received a National Science Foundation Artists and Writers Grant to photograph Antarctica. Barbara Rowell was the president of Mountain Light Photography, a photo agency, gallery and small press co-owned with Galen. Barbara piloted a Cessna T206 and had recently completed her first book Flying South: A Pilot's Inner Journey, scheduled to be released in October of 2002. Her photographs have been published in National Geographic, Outside, Plane & Pilot, and in many books, calendars, and travel publications. Barbara was born Jan. 29, 1948 in Hawaii to Lucile and Irving Cushman while her father was stationed in the Navy at Pearl Harbor. At the age of five, her family was transferred to Texas for a brief stay in Kingsville before settling in California. After moving to Aspen to design ski wear, she returned to California to complete her studies in Textiles and Business, and graduated in 1978 from the University of California at Davis with Highest Honors. Barbara and Galen were married in 1981 and together built Mountain Light Photography into a successful gallery and stock photography business that recently relocated from the Bay Area to their new home of Bishop in the Eastern Sierra. Barbara and Galen traveled to many exotic locations, including to a National Geographic assignment in Pakistan to cover the highest war in history where they were flown throughout the Himalaya as guests of President Zia. They have also been the guests of the Dalai Lama, and served as guides to Robert Redford on a trek through Nepal. They touched many lives around the world, and they will be sorely missed. Services for the couple are pending. Please check the Mountain Light Gallery website for more extensive biographies, and further information as it becomes available: http://www.mountainlight.com. LOUIS HUBER For those of you wondering how former Encina math teacher Louis Huber is doing after his stroke, Valerie Poetker Burke 80 wrote: "I just wanted to give you a heads-up on the master plan for Lou. He is in the process of planning a move to Sacramento from Alaska, provided that his children are able to find him a suitable placement in an Extended Care facility in the Sacramento area. He is progressing slowly but is doing much better than I expected, given the massiveness of his stroke last year. He remains in a wheelchair but is making progress toward walking with a walker! I am hopeful that once he arrives in Sacramento, he will have a steady stream of visitors from his history at Encina! I don't have any idea at this point when the move will happen, but I will let you know when I know. He greatly appreciates letters and cards and visits from friends and family. I'll keep you posted as I find out new info. Thanks, Valerie Burke" You can write Lou care of his friend Jack Montgomery at montgomeryjamak@aol.com If you have any suggestions about Extended Care facilities in Sacramento you can also send these to Jack or Valerie. I've captured the first 11 minutes of Steve's tape and added it here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02.htm There are links to the clips in the section under the first pictures entitled Alumni Challenge videoclip. This clip includes an introduction, the channel 3 and channel 10 newspots, interviews with the players, referees and Christine Kojima, and concludes with highlights of the game. This is a great way to experience the excitement of the alumni challenge game for those who could not attend in person! Highly recommended! The clips are available in RealMedia (27mb) and Windows Media (17mb) format, so you should be able to download and view these clips if you have the RealMedia Player or the Windows Media Player. The original DV AVI file was 2.5gb. I was surprised at how watchable these highly compressed RealMedia and Windows Media clips were. Enjoy! REUNIONS The Class of 77 reunion is this weekend! The next reunions are: Class of 77 - August 17, 2002 Class of 62 - September 28, 2002 Class of 92 - October 19, 2002 For those who have reunions this summer, I encourage you to RSVP as soon as possible. Having worked on the last 73 reunion, I know that you must let the caterers/hotel know early on how many people you expect. In some rates, the room charge depends on the number of people. Give your reunion committees a break and RSVP now! Reunion committees, I suggest you publish lists of those who have rsvped so far to the class mailing lists. I'll be glad to publish these lists on the class homepages and keep them up to date. Also, encourage your classmates to submit their bios. Knowing who's going and what classmates have been up to help folks to decide whether they will attend or not. Get conversations going on your class mailing list too. If you are interested in being a member, please send an e-mail to Encina1983Reunion@yahoo.com CLASS OF 1992 Hello Everyone, I am writing to all of you because of the recent problems that Jannell and I have experienced with the reunion planning. The place that we had decided on has CLOSED its doors. Therefore, we are forced to basically start over. The chances of getting a place, and on the same date, are VERY slim. And considering that we have received few rsvps, I have decided to re-evaluate the plans. Elk Grove Park has wonderful areas to have a reunion, BBQ, games and we can bring the fun. We can lower the price of the tickets significantly and still have the event catered. Or we can supply the meat and the drinks and the people who attend can bring a side dishes. KIDS will then be WELCOME to attend and we will probably be able to supply many different things for them to be entertained. So please get back to me with what you think we should do. Or if you have any other ideas, we would love to hear them, too. Get back to us ASAP, our decision is going to be ma Rochelle Laun (Karrick) Date: Saturday, October 19, 2002 Place: Park TBD Contact Rochelle Karrick Laun at RochLaun@yahoo.com or Jannell Penney at penneytax@msn.com CLASS OF 1993 *** UPDATE *** Dear Class of 1993 Here's the latest update. There were very few people that showed up at the meeting. I'd like to thank Teresa Buckalew-Tobin, Declan Christopherson-Barton, and Eddie Hinsley for attending and giving a lot of suggestions towards the reunion. So, after our discussion, this is what we came up with. Keep in mind this event is still under construction. There is a lot to do. We thought the DATE would be JULY 19, 2003 or AUGUST 9, 2003. The PLACE would be at the Doubletree Hotel or at a country depending on how many people are expecting to attend. And last the TIME is still open for discussion. This is what I am asking from each of you (class of 1993).... I would like to hear your opinion of what has been decided on. And igf you would attend the reunion so I can get an estimate of how many people will plan to attend so I may plan the cost of this event. If you are unable to e-mail me you can call me and let me know. After this I will plan the reunion as best I can with the help I have. SO PLEASE PLEASE TAKE A FEW MINUTES OUT OF YOUR TIME AND HELP. THANX FOR YOUR TIME AND COOPERATION. Laura Bui 916-947-4250 P.S. These are a few names of people that have mentioned to me they are attending the reunion. I recently had contact with Kris and his fiance Vanessa-we had lunch, it was nice. Hobbies: I read a lot, when I am not in school. I enjoy almost all music and I like to dance. But pretty much I just spend time with my pets and my partner. It's all good, kind of boring, but good. I would rather be stable and secure than be inundated with Trama and Drama. Memorable_teachers: For those of you who know me, I will not even go there, it was not Pretty and I hurt a teacher very badly by my actions. I would like to set the record straight, without repeating the incident, because I hear most people know about it. What I did was never meant to be hurtful or found out. It was not even really intended to be a joke, It was something done in very bad taste and no prior consideration of the teacher involved and how it would affect her. I had feelings that I did not know how to, and I expressed them in a very inappropriate way, and I have felt bad ans sorry for that since the fall of 1988 when I did it. Here in Los Angeles, DJs have all but stopped telling us who the artists they are playing are. It's not uncommon for five or six songs to go by and never hear their names. YES.NET lists radio stations from hundreds of cities around the U.S. and tells you who is playing and who was playing. Then you can buy CDs, concert tickets and other merchandise." This is very cool. They have the playlists for many radio stations throughout the US. Next time you hear a song you are interested in, jot down the station and the time and you can look it up on yes.net.
