Only two weeks to go! Next week is Fourth of July. If you see Encina alumni and siblings at holiday gatherings, be sure and spread the word about the Encina website. No update next week due to holidays. WEBSITE Forms were broken on the Encina website from Monday night to Wednesday night. If you tried to submit a form and it generated an error, please try again. We're paying a consultant to configure the Encina server so that the class webmasters can update their class homepage. This has been broken since we moved to the new Encina server. If we have any knowledgeable alumni who are IT types familiar with administering a Windows IIS 5.0 server and Frontpage 2002, please write. It would be very useful to have some FREE alumni help administering the Encina server in the future. Thanks! They were here this morning to film a segment on perimenopause. Apparently, there was an article in the New York Times the other day discussing whether perimenopausal symptoms were real or were they just made up by companies trying to sell women products. I also taped a segment last week on summer exercise and safety for CNN. It is suppose to show this Sat. 6-29 at 2:30 on their health program." VIETNAM A followup on the Rio memorial for Daniel Twitty, who attended both Rio and Encina. Sacramento Bee, June 23, 2002 Friends Honor War's Victims - Former high school classmates dedicate a plaque to three who died in Vietnam. By Gwendolyn Crump -- Bee Staff Writer They graduated from high school during the summer of love but were drawn into one of the bloodiest conflicts in U.S. history -- the Vietnam War. Classmates from Rio Americano High School's class of 1967 gathered at the school Saturday to memorialize three who died in Vietnam. The class honored Daniel Twitty, Robert "Rocky" Cole and Terry Joslin with a plaque that will be installed at the school's flag pole. "I didn't want their names to be forgotten," said Gordon Smith, who spearheaded the tribute. "This is kind of a way to make a historical record of these guys for their sacrifices." The memorial ceremony was held during the class's 35th reunion weekend. A motorcycle fund-raising tour through the Gold Country is scheduled today to help raise money for the plaque. Riders will meet at the Carmichael high school at 10:30 a.m. Smith, who also served in Vietnam, said the memorial was late in coming. "For the first 20 years, it was so difficult to talk about with the families, we just left it alone," he said. Renee Mitchell, Joslin's older sister, said her brother's death still hurts, but the memorial is helping her family heal. Mitchell said Smith visited her family and they looked through a box of old pictures and letters. "It got my parents to talk about it," Mitchell said. "It made him alive again." Joslin's mother, Naomi Joslin, said she is pleased that his classmates remembered him. "I think it's wonderful that these kids are doing this," she said. "It's so surprising." Joslin recalled how steadfast her son was in his decision to serve his country while some of his friends tried to persuade him to run to Canada. "But he told them, 'If my country is not worth fighting for, it's not worth living,'" she said. Terry Joslin had been married to his high school sweetheart for nine months before he died. His widow, Jacqua Haynes, remarried, had three daughters and divorced. "I think mostly how my life would have been different if he had survived -- how it would have turned out," Haynes said. The three young men are the only Rio Americano High School students who perished in Vietnam, Smith said. The class of 1967 is the first graduating class from the high school. Twitty was serving with the First Air Calvary Division when he was killed on April 6, 1968, during a mortar barrage. Joslin was setting up an attack with other members of his Marine Corps unit when they were ambushed by the enemy on Dec. 26, 1969. Cole was serving as a radio telephone operator at the time of his death on March 29, 1969. He was killed by enemy fire while trying to aid a wounded soldier. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star of Valor, the Army Commendation Medal of Valor and the Purple Heart. Saturday's memorial was full of tears and laughter as stories were shared near the flagpole about the men -- about riding motorcycles, neighborhood pranks and skipping school. Friends told stories about how Twitty was rebellious, how Joslin was fun and handy, and how Cole was adventuresome. Shelley Hulton, Twitty's girlfriend at the time, said she fell for him because of his rebellious streak. She also said he had a great spirit, sense of humor and a good heart. Twitty had been a student at Rio Americano, but transferred to Encina High School. Many classmates recounted tales of Cole's fantastic surfing. "When a lot of guys in Sacramento were posing to be surfers, Rocky truly was a surfer," Smith said. "He actually owned a Hobie surf board." Cole's mother, Jeannette Simpson, said, "He was very loving. He had a lot of fun in him." She said her son was kicked off the high school football team because the coach said he wasn't mean enough. John McGary, who now lives in Edgewood, was a friend of each of the three. "I miss those guys," he said. "I think how nice it would be to see them. Maybe someday we will." ALEXIS SCANDALIS GENUNG 70 Artist reaches gallery goal A Fair Oaks resident moves her promotional business out of her home into a public space. By Marsha Hart -- Bee Staff Writer Published 2:15 a.m. PDT Thursday, June 20, 2002 Generosity has led to an expanded business for Fair Oaks resident and artist Alexis Genung. After a couple of years promoting other artists, she finally has realized her goal of opening a gallery. Genung originally ran her promotional business out of her home, but it became too big, she said. The logical next step for her was to open a gallery. Genung said she offers free in-home consultations that often lead her to recommend an artist other than herself. Some of her own best-selling prints are Greek churches and Greek seaside views, which sometimes don't fit with a client's home, she said. Now that she has the gallery, she has samples of other artists' work available for the consultations. Genung and her husband, Michael, opened Alexis Genung Studios in November at 910 15th St. in the Central City. Genung offers custom framing and said she is committed to personal service. "We needed a more public place," she said. "Now we have a place where people can walk by." One artist is featured at the gallery every other month, she said. Genung and her husband represent seven to 10 artists. "We look at their work and also how they feel about relating to the public," she said. "We all share a goal to improve people's lives through art." Time has been divided between the gallery and her home studio, Genung said. She added that she spent a lot of time at the gallery when it opened, but now she spends half of her time painting and the other half at the gallery. "It's amazing how much there is to do there, from dusting and cleaning to cataloging and inventory," she said. Alexis and Michael helped Central City resident and artist John McGinley find spaces to show his work a couple of years ago. He is showing his work at Alexis Genung Studios for the second time, he said. His show continues through July 10. "We met at an artists' group meeting a couple years ago, and she and Michael were showing work around town and I was getting started finding a place to show," McGinley said. "They got me some wall spaces and had me going to various restaurants and doing shows there." McGinley, who is from Montana, does cityscapes and landscapes, he said. "She likes my work, even though it is more abstract than she does, and she works hard to push my work," McGinley said. "That's great to have a gallery owner who does that. The two of them are a good combination. Michael is fearless when it comes to marketing. That combination of his outreach skills with her talent as a businesswoman and artist makes for an excellent combination. I'm very happy to have connected up with them." Genung said she gets as much pleasure out of promoting other artists as she does when she sells her own work. That doesn't mean she accepts just any artist, said Charlotte Cooper, a Citrus Heights resident who does large watercolors. "She has a variety of stuff, and I'm really pleased to be invited to be part of it because I respect the level of the work she has there," Cooper said. Cooper will show her work at the gallery beginning the second Saturday in July and continuing through August, she said. "I am impressed by the variety and level of work I've seen. People who show there are so different from what I am, and it's good to be in a place like that," Cooper said. Working as a litigation manager for a large insurance company led Millie Beatie to a potter's wheel about four years ago, and eventually to Alexis Genung Studios. "Work is a negative environment, and I didn't want to become old and crusty and grouchy," the Loomis resident said. "I do high-fire porcelain and stonework. I call it usable art." The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. GOFF Born in Sacramento on November 16, 1963, David passed away on June 15, 2002 following a courageous and hard-fought battle with leukemia for more than one year. A resident of Sacramento for most of his life, he attended local schools, including Encina High School. He then attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan, where he developed a keen and long-lasting interest in computer science and ultimately majored in that subject. Following his graduation from Hope in 1985, David was employed as a computer programmer and analyst for various firms in the Sacramento area and in Denver, Colorado. He returned to Sacramento from Denver and founded his own computer consulting firm "The Data Retrievers," which he successfully operated and directed over 10 years until prevented from doing so by the leukemia. Although he devoted many long hours and great effort to The Data Retrievers' business, he also was able to make time for numerous other interests, including, in particular, his love of horses and other animals. He was a skillful equestrian and participated in polo matches, horse shows, and trail riding. His patience, together with a warm and loving nature, enabled him to communicate with the animals in a unique way. While pursuing these equestrian interests, David first met his greatly beloved wife Shelby, who shared his interest and love for animals, including a passion for the equestrian activities. Together they rode their horses throughout Northern California and cared for their animals until the leukemia restricted David's activities. A favorite ride of David's was along the beaches in the Monterey area, and he expressed the desire to have his remains scattered there over the Pacific Ocean. David's warmth, sincerity, and love of his family and friends, together with his infectious sense of humor and wit, always made life more pleasurable when he was present. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. In addition to his wife Shelby, David is survived by his mother Gay Goff; his father Barlow Goff; his sister Susan Timmer; his brother Stephen Goff; his sister-in-law Marcia Augsburger; nieces Caroline Timmer and Lara Kincanon; and nephew John Timmer; mother-in-law Joanne Bratcher; father-in-law Gary Bratcher; brother-in-law Shawn Bratcher, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, dogs, cats, and horses. L Rose 80 wrote: WOW - I can't believe David's made his transition! I remember his awesome fighting spirit. When he was younger he was a 'little squirt" and just got so mercilessly picked on. He wanted so much to be tall and to be big and no one would ever have thought he would nor could grow much bigger than he was. In fact, I remember seeing him diligently practicing basketball in that small body and feeling compassion for the fact that he was so unfairly matched with anyone close to his age. Well, I guess determination and visualization paid off because lo and behold, not long after moving on from Encina, wouldn't you know that boy shot up to become not just taller but actually a BIG guy!!! Surprise, surprise! I remember being so taken aback - I could barely recognize him. But! - I was thrilled for him and inspired by what was an obvious manifestation of setting your mind so keenly on something with it somehow showing up like it did in David's case. Many blessings to David and his family from this long ago, old friend. I keep and hold onto those fond memories of inspiration. I am currently on the Arbitration Panel Committee for California and finishing my bachelor's degree in Business Mgmt so I can move on to Law School - 12 more months to go. Still wild as hell though, and usually (to this day) do not give a damn about what people think of my lifestyle. Trivia: I have 4 tattoos, working on the 5th one now. Still skateboard, still dance on the weekends, still dating, still just being Kelly - except smarter, more mature and extreme. Friends: Best Friends - Katrina Pace. She was one of the coolest chicks I knew. Lost contact with everyone basically. Been too busy. Hobbies: I am starting to take flying lessons so I can get over my fear of flying since 9/11. And see the trivia answer above about anything else. Let's put it this way - I am not Martha Stewart, or a Stepford Wife. Very forward thinking mentality. Kids: My son is a future Steven Spielberg. I bought him a video camera and I swear he is like that guy on American Beauty - videotaping the plastic bag. He skateboards and loves Japanimation.
