A few weeks ago, classmate Rett Smart '73 asked whether the Encina Booster Club might be willing to fund the alumni website, since the alumni have been so generous in supporting Encina via their Alumni Challenge pledges and donations. Rett is full of good ideas like this. The first alumni homecoming party was also Rett's idea! I'm am happy to announce that the Encina High School Booster Club met on Tuesday night and voted to fund the Encina website this year! I received a check for $500 yesterday for the website expenses next year. All I have to do now is save my receipts and send them to the Booster Club for their records. So you'll be happy to know that your donations and pledges to the alumni challenge are helping to support the website too! To all of you who helped support the Encina website in the past, your generosity is greatly appreciated. It cost about $2000 to keep the website running last year due to the $115/month hosting fees. This year, $500 should be more than enough to pay the website expenses, barring unforseen circumstances. VIRUS So Harlan, what did you do last weekend??? Somehow, in spite of running Norton anti-virus on our home PCs, I received the k l e z virus from someone. It's hard to say who, since k l e z does this clever thing where it inserts the name of someone in your address book in the from address so it looks like you're getting the virus from a third party. I even received a mail containing the virus when appeared to be from myself. I think it snuck in while I was upgrading my laptop from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. Before installing Norton Antivirus, I decided to test email with Outlook Express. Wouldn't you know it, one of the first messages I checked appeared to have a virus. I later installed Norton Antivirus and sure enough, I was infected. The k l e z virus also tries to disable your antivirus software and messes with your virus definition files. Nasty. By the time I realized I had it, k l e z had somehow spread across my home network and infected all three of the PCs we have at home. The Symantec page on k l e z says it can distribute itself via network shares. Amazing. Here's what Fred Langa said... "K l e z Worms From People You Never Heard Of? A number of readers have been concerned about getting k l e z-infected emails from apparent strangers: "How did they get my email address?" is the most common question. Phil Gold was first to point to the answer in an email he called "Why we get k l e z From people we never heard of:" This links explains why we are getting all these K L E Z emails from people we never heard of. http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,52055,00.html "..Once active on a computer, Klez searches for [any] files containing e-mail addresses. It randomly selects one as the "sender," and then transmits e- mails with attachments containing the virus to the rest of the collected addresses... " So, K l e z can spread by the "friend of a friend" method. 7) K L E Z Gets Worse And Worse K l e z and its cousin worms, in epidemic distribution, still are causing huge hassles for millions of users. The worms can propagate by copying snippets of valid emails and inserting valid (but stolen) email addresses into the "from" line. Thus, you can get infected emails that look legitimate, but that come from people you never heard of. Or--- even more alarmingly--- people you never heard of may get worm- infected emails that appear to have come *from you.* If an innocent and uninfected email from you happens to reside on someone else's infected system, the worm may use *your name* and even part of your innocent email, and send it to someone else along with an infected payload. The risk of this happening is directly proportional to how many emails you've sent out: The more you've sent, the more likely your name and email will reside on someone else's infected computer, where it can be hijacked by the worm for its own purposes. This affected me, big time: I send out some 160,000 copies of this newsletter, twice a week, so there are lots of mailboxes out there that contain email from me. Some of those systems are infected, and the worms are using my name and some of the newsletter content when they re-mail themselves to others. I'm now getting tons of email from people who think I've sent them an infected file, or that the email newsletter itself is being sent out infected. Some ISPs and corporate gateways have banned mail from me because they think I'm sending out infected email. Sigh. FYI: None of the four versions of this newsletter is EVER sent with any attachment (they all are self-contained messages). ALL versions of this newsletter are assembled and manually loaded onto the server (not emailed to the server) as PLAIN TEXT; even the HTML version is assembled as a plain-text source file. This isn't a new thing--- I've always done it this way to ensure that there is *no way* I'll send you a worm or virus attachment or embedment. Manually loading the newsletters as plain text guarantees that everything you get from me starts 100% clean. So, if you see an email or newsletter ostensibly from me that contains K l e z or any other virus, worm, or whatnot, you can rest assured that it was absolutely, positively NOT from me, but was hijacked by K l e z and sent to you from someone else's infected system. And I'm not alone there, either. Take Ositis, for example--- they make a well-regarded Internet-sharing proxy that (ironically) includes built-in antivirus protection: Thank you for exposing the K L E Z problem. As a company that provides network connectivity and antivirus (if only everyone implemented this feature at the network gateway...), we are being bombarded with accusations that we are "spamming" viruses. Obviously, this is highly undesirable. On the bright side, we are stripping the viruses before they reach our clients, but that doesn't stop the spam itself. Many people are mistakenly led to believe that valid companies are now engaging in broadcast spamming in violation of privacy policies and that this is being endorsed by the company or that somehow the company is "leaking" their information.... The miscreants who concoct this malicious software are true scum." I spent most of the weekend trying to disinfect three PCs. Since it disabled the antivirus software on my main pc, which I use to update the website, I had to download Symantec's special k l e z fixer, reboot in safe mode and run it a couple times. Symantec's fixer repairs what it can and deletes what it can't fix. Unfortunately, some of the files it can't fix might be important (my explorer.exe was infected). I ended up having to reinstall Windows 2000 and start from scratch on my main machine, which I use to update the website. I've haven't had time to reinstall all the software and haven't been able to update the website for the past week. I can't imagine how much time has been wasting by folks infected with computer viruses. Several of the class lists have subscribers who are infected. I have received numerous emails from folks who have received infected email, sometimes apparently from themselves. The only way to eliminate this problem is to stop using email or install antivirus software. Georgia Fousek 80 found this on snopes.com. Beware of the following message: "Klez.E is the most common world-wide spreading worm.It's very dangerous by corrupting your files. Because of its very smart stealth and anti-anti-virus technic,most common AV software can't detect or clean it. We developed this free immunity tool to defeat the malicious virus. You only need to run this tool once,and then Klez will never come into your PC. NOTE: Because this tool acts as a fake Klez to fool the real worm,some AV monitor maybe cry when you run it. If so,Ignore the warning,and select 'continue'. If you have any question,please mail to me. " Snopes.com says: "The messages quoted above are correct in noting that Klez is a common worm which is currently spreading and infecting computers world-wide, but they contain no "immunity tools" that will protect your PC from Klez. Far from it: in classic "trojan horse" fashion, these messages (bearing a subject line of "Worm Klez.E Immunity") are disguises that trick unsuspecting users into executing their attachments -- attachments which don't protect against the Klez virus but actually spread it. " How devious. To send a supposed klez fix which is actually the klez virus itself.... If you are not running antivirus software on your PCs, you are living dangerously! But make sure you are running antivirus software from a reputable firm... Legislation that would ban the use of Indian-related school mascots is headed for a final vote after clearing its last committee. The measure by Los Angeles-area Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg would ban any mascot that's based on an ethnic group. Goldberg says it's a civil rights issue. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights ruled last year that Native American school mascots may be a violation of civil rights because they create a "hostile environment for Native American students." Opponents of the measure say it's political correctness run amok. If the measure becomes law, California schools would have until 2003 to change their mascots. A final vote could come as soon as next week. Jane Larson Smith REGGIE VAUGHN Staff Profile: Reggie Vaughn Striding through the hallways asking students, "How are you feeling today?" "Girl, you better put a smile on your face." Hey, hey, you know better than that; what example are you making for the underclassmen?" "Respect your teachers." These are just a few statements passed along to the students by our campus monitor, Reggie Vaughn. Reggie was born in Sacramento, California on 1/27/68 at Mercy Hospital to Ella and Lawrence Vaughn. Reggie was born with eleven fingers. He had this eleventh finger until he was six years old when a young cousin, playing around, pulled the finger completely off. Reggie received many stitches and was in pain for a long time. At least it was not like his uncle who had 12 fingers who lived way out on a farm and, when one of his fingers was pulled off, he died on the way to the hospital. Reggie was always worried by this as a child. Reggie's father, Lawrence, was born in Oklahoma and moved to Madera, California... "He was cool. " Reggie said that his father, who is deceased, reminds him of his brother Tony because he was fun and everyone wanted to be around him. Lawrence was always taking in stray kids, giving them food, clothing, shelter, and hope. Sometimes Lawrence would make his own family go without to help others, and this attitude continues in his family today. Lawrence was in WWII and would always tell them, "I don't understand how you guys (family) need a ride to every place. When I lived in Madera, I had to walk up a hill two miles and back up the hill to school every day." Lawrence was a great baseball player who started on the Sacramento Solons. Reggie's mother was from St. Lewis and she was raised in Madera. She was a "great lady" always wanting to do for her community. After Lawrence died, she took control and raised the entire family. She worked for the State Department of Mental Health. Ella and Lawrence were high school sweethearts and never told their parents about it. In fact, Ella's grandfather was a pastor, and Lawrence's grandmother was a missionary. His grandmother had 12 brothers and sisters. When Ella turned 18, she left and got married, and moved to Sacramento. Her parents were upset; eventually, they fell in love with Lawrence. Religion is a very important aspect of both families' lives. "Family is everything." Reggie had three brothers Tony, Mike, and Lavon and one sister, Kim. She made each of her children read the dictionary every day. Reggie attended Freeport Elementary and his favorite teacher was the deceased city council member, Sam Parnell. "He was tough, but fun." Sam had the ability to make everything seem so easy, no matter the topic. You always felt you were learning. Reggie went to John H. Still Middle School. Mrs. Porter, his English teacher, was his favorite. She was demanding, but would do anything she could do to help students. She would make everyone read no matter what level they were at and would admonish anyone who made fun of another student. "You could not pass; you had to read. By the end of the year, everyone in class could read almost at the same level. Our self-esteem was beaming and we wanted to show everyone our accomplishment. Mrs. Power would come in early, stay in at lunch, and wait for you after school to help you. "Reggie played basketball and was president of the Home Economics Club and was the best tailor and cook in the class. The skills he learned in home economics have been so practical to use at home. Reggie wishes young men could take this class today. Reggie's Kennedy High School years were very memorable. Kennedy was a great modern school with a college atmosphere. Reggie recalls coming to school and hearing the huge award-winning marching band of 3500 students. Kennedy had elevators and a family atmosphere. "Everyone was always looking out for everyone else. There was so much parent support." Mr. Kreogre, his math teacher, was his favorite teacher. Mr. Kroegre was always available to help .He volunteered to tutor Kennedy's championship basketball team. "Oh, was he tough but you knew deep down that he really cared about you as a person." Reggie participated in basketball, football, track, Black Student Union, played saxophone in the band and was a member of the "Who? Is Who? Club" to support new students. Reggie dated a senior girl named Laurie Billingley while he was only a freshman. All of the guys wanted to talk with her but she liked Reggie because he never really paid any attention to her. He was stunned when she asked him to her senior ball. They had a great time even though Reggie's mother gave him an early curfew. Laurie's father was a doctor and her mother was an anesthesiologist. He got to go to the prom in a white Mercedes convertible. She eventually went on to Harvard and now is a successful lawyer. After Laurie graduated and left for college, Reggie dated his best friend's sister, Debra. They had attended elementary school together. In fact, while in elementary school, he told her that one day he would marry her. After high school, Reggie received a partial basketball scholarship to East Washington State. He was there for two years. It was not one of his favorite times; he faced a lot of racism during his stay. He remembers someone hanging a chicken upside down bleeding to death, leaving a puddle of blood on the door step of their apartment. One night, while out with basketball friends, they were chased home by the Ku Klux Klan. Many times they would find racial graffiti on their door, walls, or cars. The recurring knee injury made him come home after consulting with his parents. He started dating Debra who had attended Cosumnes River College and worked at California State Tax Franchise Board Reggie's marriage proposal was interesting. Reggie had taken his best friend, Terrence, out to find a wedding ring that he had saved $4,000 for. That night, they had a gathering of 20 to 30 family members. Reggie tried to pick a fight with Debra so that he could make up and then ask her to marry him. Debra would not cooperate. So, he made everyone come into the living room, dropped to his knees, and asked her in front of everyone, "Will you marry me?" Debra said, "I think I'll have to think about it." What was only about two minutes seemed like an eternity. And she finally said yes. Everyone applauded. They had a huge wedding. They now have four children: Keyra, Joshua, Morgan, and Sydnee. Reggie arrived at Encina by working at Goethe Middle School for Sam Pernal as a basketball coach. Then, he coached for two years at Cosumnes River College with Jim Clark. They made it to the elite league finals. Reggie then coached at Luther Burbank and was asked to come to Encina and coach with John Hightower. Reggie loves being at Encina. Reggie's advice to Encina's students is to respect your elders, and be willing to give back to those who have helped you. "Give back to the community." Reggie, also known as Captain Bluegill, had a fantastic year as basketball coach. He achieved this with integrity, sincerity, honesty, and thoughtfulness. We can't wait until next year. Flew the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (big airplane with a big telescope in it)for NASA '88-90. Activated for Desert Storm all of '91. Got married in '91. Moved to Bend, OR in '93 to work (as a golf professional) at Black Butte Ranch. I've had my real estate license for three years. Friends: Greg Evans was my best friend. Haven't seen him in over 25 years. Hobbies: Golf, Taekwondo (black belt), road and mountain biking. Kids: Alysa is a third grader in the tiny Sisters school district. She loves riding her horse, art and dance. Grade_school: I went to Linda Vista Elementary in San Lorenzo, Ca Junior_high: We moved to Sac when I was an eighth grader. I went to Jonas Salk. DOUGLAS McCALEB 82 Occupation: Physical Therapist Sutter General Hospital spouse: Shawnda Bio: Like my good friend Paul Niklewicz, I too tried to "Make it Big" in the music bizz. Paul and I played in a group together for about 4 years called the "Veil", we recorded and album, (remember vinyl?), we did some touring but never hit the big time. I then went on to play with another group called "Rhythm School" again recorded, toured, no big time. I floundered around for a few years doing some session work for local studios and went from job to job. I was a head cook at the "Good Earth Restaurant", a limo driver, a legal land abstracter for the bureau of land management (what kind of a job was that?). I then found and fell madly in love with the women of my dreams!!! We were married on the beach in Carmel in 1988. I went back to school, got my license as a Physical Therapist and I currently work at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento. I have two children Jeremy 19 and Brittanie 17. I'm still very busy with music. I play in two praise and worship bands at different local churches. Friends: Paul Niklewicz, Dave Stanton, Telly Tasakos, Jim Nelson(Green), Rob Beland, Somes Funikosh, Hobbies: Music, Mountain bikeing, hiking, WW2 naval history (especially submarines.) Sleeping on Senior lawn last day of School and playing midnight socer with Kevin Anderson. Story: I remember durring drivers education with Mr. Rollins, I went down the wrong way on a one way street. Mr. Rollins just about had a heart attack and said "your going the wrong way Mr. McCaleb" in the most anoying whine you have ever heard. Some years later I saw him at Home Depot.
