From: "Harlan Lau" Date: Sat Apr 20, 2002 12:45 am Subject: Encina Update (alumni challenge, photos/video, scoresheets, pledges, notes, door prizes, reunions, siblings, madrigals/jack carey, bios, internet, whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, There is no sponsor for this week's update. I'll have to pay about $250 for backup tapes for the Encina server soon. Hint hint. ALUMNI CHALLENGE As you know from last Saturday's update, the Alumni team prevailed over Encina's varsity in double overtime by a score of 97-96! The alumni team were: Todd Brownell '73 Bob Goosmann '74 Chris Dahlberg '80 Rafael Enriquez '84 Adam Guzman '84 Mark LaCoste '85 James Jones '87 Ryan Norris '89 Take a bow! Steve Palmer 74 wrote: Monday morning and I am still blown away by the results of our team effort. What an incredible night!!!! Myrtle, you have a great team of people at Encina and it REALLY shows. The Alumni loved the dinner decorations, the tours, the music and the game. Thanks Heddy, Jennifer, Stephanie, Becky, Natalie, Sue, all the students and everyone else for the superb job! We all knew Dannie would put out a great meal and he didn't disappoint us! People told me that the prime rib was the best they had every had! I had my share and loved it. I tried to get some of the varsity players to eat big meals, but they just had some pie. :) The video of the backboard breaking and our heartbreak continues to play in my mind. We thought the fund raising part of the evening was over. But the coaches and refs/VPs pulled out a great save and really went the extra mile/overtimes to conclude a wonderful night. Thanks to their work, we could play past the 26 to 25 score. (I thought it was much more fun in the small gym; certainly much more personal and up close!). I couldn't talk the next day, but it was a small price to pay. Thanks to EVERYONE for a great event and super support. Best wishes for a great week. Steve Palmer '74 For those who tried to go to the postgame party in the cafeteria after the game, only to find it was locked up, we are sorry about the mixup. By the time we got the cafeteria unlocked, most of you had drifted off to celebrate elsewhere. I talked with athletic director Russ Hibbard after the game about relaxing the 10 year restriction on alumni players in order to increase attendance and participation from 90s alumni next year. Russ said as long as the alumni players did not go to school with the current varsity players there was no problem. He said a 5 year restriction would be okay for next year, which makes alumni from 2002 - 5 = 1997 eligible to play on the alumni team. I use 2002 since next year is the 2002-3 school year. The Alumni challenge was covered by Channel 10 on Saturday night and Channel 3 on Sunday night! Many thanks to Kerry Shearer '72 and Tom DuHain '68 for their help getting the challenge on the air! For those of you who missed it, the channel 3 clip is available on the website. PHOTOS AND VIDEO Check out the updated Alumni Challenge page: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02.htm Steve Palmer made Quicktime and AVI videoclips of the Channel 3 coverage (45 seconds) and Richard Nelson's backboard shattering dunk (8 seconds) which are available on the website. Unfortunately, the server isn't set up to stream video so you'll have to wait a while for the clips to download before they start up. I was able to view the clips using Quicktime5 and the Windows Media Player 7.0. If you do not have a high speed link (cable/dsl) you probably should skip the videoclips. If you need to download these viewers there are links to the Apple and Microsoft websites. There are also pictures of my tour of Stephanie Woo's classroom with it's EBS studio and video facilities and of the SCI-FI show in the Encina Art Gallery: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02/tour.htm I took pictures of every picture and sculpture. Some of these students are very talented. There are pictures of the dinner in the cafeteria here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02/photo1.htm The cafeteria was modernized last year and looks great. It even has air conditioning now. And there are pictures of the unforgettable alumni challenge game here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02/game.htm It's not as good as watching the video but I think it captures some of the excitement of the game for those of you who weren't there. Steve Palmer has the tape the professional videographer made, plus tapes that Stephanie Woo and her students filmed at the alumni challenge for EBS, the Encina Broadcasting System. Steve is busy converting Stephanie's tape to DV (digital video) and capturing it all on his Mac. I'm hoping Steve has time to make a short highlight tape of the game for the website while he's in the process of making the tape we plan to send to all those who pledged and supported Encina. SCORESHEETS We got the scoresheets for the alumni and varsity teams. Thanks to Stuart Freedman and Heddy Crowder for scanning and mailing them. The scoresheets are at the bottom of the page with the game photos: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02/game.htm if you would like to see them. Steve Palmer '74 noticed a discrepancy is the scoresheet, which he resolved by watching the actual game footage. The scorekeeper credited one of Ryan's overtime baskets to Rafael. The result of this correction is that the totals for Ryan and Rafael on the scoresheet do not match the point totals below. The total was not affected. The final point totals for the alumni team were: Alumni Todd Brownell '73 #30 5 Bob Goosmann '74 #32 7 Chris Dahlberg '80 #31 3 (injured in 2nd quarter) Rafael Enriquez '84 #40 21 (scoresheet says 23) Adam Guzman '84 #4 10 Mark LaCoste '85 #33 0 James Jones '87 #55 21 Ryan Norris '89 #22 30 (scoresheet says 28) Total 97 And for the Varsity Bulldogs: Bulldogs Lionel Smith 10 Mark Gilbert 0 Matt Baggs 0 Arber Mane 4 Stephen Beasley 22 Jelani Johnson 9 Richard Nelson 13 Tim Goode 11 James Hankins 2 Theotis Trotter 0 John Coaxum 19 Brian Fraser 4 Harvis Berry 2 Deandre Robinson 0 Total 96 Some interesting statistics: Three point shots by the alumni team: four (one by Rafael Enriquez 84, three by Adam Guzman 84) Encina will receive over $1000 for each three pointer! Free throws: 29 of 52 Total minutes (four 8 minute quarters plus two 4 minute overtimes): 8+8+8+8+4+4 = 40 minutes x 5 = 200 player minutes Apaches: 200 minutes/7.25 players = 27.5 minutes per player Chris Dahlbeg 80 played up until he was injured in the second quarter. With overtime there were effectively five 8 minute quarters. Bulldogs: 200 minutes/14 players = 14 minutes per player Unfortunately, points scored do not reflect defensive skills, assists or rebounds. We may be able to extract additional stats from the game tapes if time permits. PLEDGES We needed the scoresheets to calculate the individual player pledges. I've calculated the total pledge for each donor on the pledge/rsvp page: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02/rsvps.htm Please check this page to see how much you owe. Please check my math. I may have over or under calculated your pledge amount. Note that pledges to Encina Booster Club are TAX DEDUCTIBLE as the Encina Booster Club is a nonprofit organization. Make your checks payable to the Encina High School Booster Club and send them to: Encina High School Attention: Heddy Crowder 1400 Bell Street Sacramento,CA 95825 We would appreciate it if everyone would send their pledge in promptly! Thank you for supporting Encina! . PLEDGE SUMMARY When I sent out the last update we were at $189.30 per alumni point with $4642 in fixed pledges. The pledges have been adjusted as a result of the result of the game, since some alumni pledges depended on whether the alumni won and the exact score. Today's fixed pledges total $5578. Today's per point pledges total $195.89. Multiplied by 97 alumni points the per point total is $19,001. The individual player pledges totaled $892. Finally, add in Paul Bonderson 70's matching funds of $15,000 !!! Thank you Paul !!! $ 5578.00 Fixed pledges $19001.00 Per point pledges $ 892.00 Individual player pledges $15000.00 Paul Bonderson 70 matching funds $40,471.00 Grand total The greatest thing is, that this is the result of pledges from over 150 different Encina alumni! IF we can collect from everyone who pledged, we should raise over $40,000 for Encina. I would like to acknowledge the following exceptional pledges: Paul Bonderson '70: match all funds raised by the challenge up to $15,000. Paul's total is $15,000 !!! Anonymous '61: pledged $5 for each $1 pledged by the class of 61. This is $40/alumni point + $875 = $4755. Karl Schnaidt '91: pledged $15/alumni point plus $5/alumni point in memory of his father Kenneth Schnaidt '61. Karl's total was $1940. Doug Dohring '76: $12/alumni point = $1164. Anonymous: $1000 Bill Farley '77: $1/alumni point + $600 camera + four River Cats seats. $700+ Steve Daniel '73: $5/alumni point = $485. Lee Pratt '61 Al Moss '63 Carol Krieg '73: $3/alumni point = $291. Peter Casillas '88: $1/alumni pt plus $2/pt by James Jones, Ryan Norris and Rafael Enriquez (the three highest scorers) plus $50 if alumni win). Peter's total was $291 Jason Alexander '92: $2.75/alumni point = $266.75 Tim Wheelis '63 and Anne Yallalee Wheelis '63: $252 Paul Whatley '70: $250 Cheryle Lees Lawson '70: $1.50alumni pt plus $1/alumni pt in memory of Sharon Hundley Heater '70: $242.50 Pete Simon '77: $200 Shawn Zausch '81: $200 Chris Tully '79 : $200 (by Jolanne Tierney '81) Larry Averitt '95: $1 for each alumni or varsity point $200 (rounded up) Karolinn Williams Green '63 Margie Marston Younger '65 Walter Lubiejewski '65 Jeralynn Cupps Krug '66 Lora Saunders '67 Linda Sorenson Lehr '70 Cecily Knepprath '72 Van Rodgers '72 Bruce Hunt '73 John Nunez '74 Tom MacLaughlin '77 Georgianna Wooley Marie '80: $2/alumni point = $194 And many many others! We could not have done it without everyone's generosity... ALUMNI NOTES Terri Jurich 74 wrote: I know our Team is probably not up to par today, but those of us in attendance did a fine job of gnashing our teeth, clapping, screaming, stomping our feet and for some reason my arm is really sore from doing the "tomahawk" on the heads of the Varsity Team sitting right in front of us..!! This all takes a bit out of those of us "oldies but goodies" too! I admit I had to take it easy today myself too!! I can only say DITTO to Bob, Steve and Harlan's commentary of the nights' events! It was THE best game I have ever been to....including those while we were in HighSchool, my daughters' school games AND the Kings too! I can't wait to get my pictures back (the succession of points on the scoreboard especially) to scrapbook this MAIN event. We even salvadged a piece of the tempered glass to put in a little pocket keeper!! With all this money pledged and when it's paid, could I suggest we use some of it to pay for the new backboard??? (or how about residual funds from LAST year?) It would be really cool to have a mini Apache logo embedded in there somewhere to encourage the kids for payback time next year!! Thanks to ALL for your efforts for a GREAT night and successful fund raiser! The food was awesome......door prizes wonderful.......kids receptive to being around people who could be their parents (well, NOT me but most of you all!! haha) ....seeing retired Staff (funny how not one grey hair on Mrs Kojima's head?) and current Staff coming together to benefit our Alma Mater. Terri Jurich Howard '74 Tim Montgomery 72 wrote: April 14, 2002 Dear Heddy, or Whomever it might concern: Let me begin by saluting everyone who was involved in contributing to the success of what will here-to-fore be known as "That Infamous Evening." Although my only direct knowledge of the 'Event' itself, is limited to the descriptions that were passed along in Harlan's update, I almost feel as if I was there. However, being a screenwriter in LA, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of that promised VIDEO TAPE of the exciting game. This seems to be catching on among the Encina Alumni of the last forty years like wildfire, from all over the country. Much of this is due to Harlan's tirelessly, enthusiastic efforts. If I can help precipitate even a few of the things I have in mind down here in Los Angeles, I hope to help make it an even greater success next year. It's almost come to represent the retro version of the film "Pay It Forward". Except that in many of our cases, it's come to that point in our lives to start paying it back. One final hurrah to my own personal favorite as "Mr. Chips"-- that would of course be -- Jack Carrey! There are so many of us from my era who feel this. I hope he KNOWS this! You might want to pass this on to him, just in case there's any chance he doesn't. It's an inspiration how he continues to honor his commitment to his students, even in his retirement. And if I'd only known the lovely Mrs. Kojima better... what thoughtful comments she conveyed... Again, many thanks to all that were involved, TIM MONTGOMERY (1972 Encina Senior Class VP and Madrigal's President) Candy Mleczko 94 wrote: I'm sure by now you've either seen or heard the news! But last night, while flipping through the channels (I'm not sure which one exactly) around 10:30-11pm, I was shocked and elaited to see the old Cardinal and Gold gym on the boob tube! The minute I saw a small portion of the gym, I knew it was my old stomping grounds! It was amazing to see the strength of these youngers guys who are pulling things we've rarely seen outside of the NBA! Way to go guys! Also, big high-fives to all of the Alumni who were apart of it all. My boyfriend and I (Eric Ramirez c/o 1996) wanted so badly to be there in person but the windy weather made our allergies double the effects of the colds that we had already begun. A special high-five and personal handshake to you, Harlan, for all of your hard work! I know, from my days as Dance Commissioner so long ago, the hard work that is involved in ANY event! And to make such a good name for Encina to the entire Sacramento area is wonderful! I couldn't believe the 3 pointers 40 was making and 22 was like lightening up and down the court with a basket at each end...and he could steal with the best of them...great playing by ALL. I would love to show my parents ( who are big KINGS fans another team to watch out for). After that wonderful meal, Becky Fransham Mercer and I took a stroll through the hallways of the school reminiscing over the great times that were spent at Encina. The kids that we met Friday night were so excited of the evening's festivities. They couldn't wait for the game!! Congratulations on a successful event!! I hope someone comes forward and donates a backboard for the school. They can become very costly! I never dreamed it could or would be as exciting as it turned out. Hail to the Alumni Team! They really made us proud, and, helped to raise an awful lot of money for a truly worthy cause. I can't leave out the great students that provided the campus tours and the caterer that supplied a really sumptuous dinner. How many ways can I say congratulations to you and Steve Palmer for all your hard work? I know there were numerous individuals that worked very hard to put the evening together and I am only sorry I can't thank each one of them individually. I guess what I am trying to say is that when you see an event like this become such an overwhelming success, it makes you extremely happy to know that being an Encina Alumni is something very special indeed. Thanks again. Christine Kojima wrote: Just wanted to add that I also got to speak with Jennifer Dumas (formerly Hodson) who brought her husband and two children to the Alumni game. Still as vibrant as she was in high school. Ah, youth. Thanks for all your effort. I know the school appreciates it and the ability to stay in touch with everyone has been great. Is Chris Dahlberg's email on the website? I wanted to ask him how he is doing. Todd The Brownells, from beautiful downtown Willows! DOCUMENTARY Laura Vasquez 77 wrote: I was thinking that the tape of the game would make a great topic for a documentary. You have the drama of the alumni returning to help their school that has fallen on hard times as well as the excitement of broken backboards, losing our tallest player and of course the double overtime victory of the alumni. Sounds like a project for the schools film department. Do they still have one now that Mr. Gonzales is gone? Stephanie Woo and her students have made a videotape of the alumni challenge for the Encina Broadcasting System (EBS). I believe Steve Palmer will be incorporating this footage into the tape he is making for those who pledged. We have already secured a place and date (see message below) and have made two sets of annoucements using e-mail and mailings to spread the word. We need to move forward to finish the planning to make this a great reunion and so we are asking for volunteers. In a few weeks we would like to hold a meeting and invite those of you who can lend a hand to come together. Since the reunion will be in Sacramento we assume that most, but not all, of the volunteers will be from the Sacramento area. If we can get 6-8 people who have some time to help out we can arrange everything without any one person having to shoulder too much of the work. Anyone able to give even a few hours work between now and August would be a great help. If you are interested in finding out more or would like to volunteer please either: Call Sue Levy Joslin at (916)608-8824 (h) Or E-mail John Hyland at johnthyland@hotmail.com Thanks in advance for your help!! It may not seem like it but 3 months for us is real close. We met last week and finalized the invitations. They should be coming by the end of the month. A missing persons list is also coming and we need all of you to take a look at it and see if you recognize any of the names on it. If you keep in contact or run into any of the missing persons please send them our way. To give you a heads up on the invitations and the reunion. We were able to keep the price to 65.00 dollars per person. For 65.00 you will get Dinner, Dancing and a Hosted Bar. On the invitations you will see time limits. If you pay before june 1st it is 65.00 after June 1st till August 8th the price will be 75.00 and 85.00 dollars at the door. A free picnic for the alumni and families will be provided the next day. We are looking to have jumping balloons and/or games for the kids and adults at the picnic. I have been talking to Vince Thompson about hopefully showing a shorter version of the class film. And along with a slide show we feel that this is all we need for entertainment because I think that we are going to be real busy just catching up on the last 20 years and reminiscing about the 4 years we spent together. We do have a couple of other things we have been tossing around but again we are on a budget and need for you to send in your payments. Right now we are looking at around 80 classmates that have said yes that they are planning on attending. We would like more and again we need your help. Look at the missing persons list and maybe do some digging to find some of these people yourselves. We have been working real hard to put this together and the thing that would make us feel the best is to see all of you show up and have a great time. Every meeting we still sit back and talk about the good times we had in high school. Times that can only be shared with YOU! So lets find some more people. If any of you can help us with doing a slide show please contact me. I have inquired into renting the machines to do a slide show and they are very expensive. So if you have a line on a slide projector or a powerpoint system let me know. I think we will start it at 12 noon and we have it until 9pm. I still need some ideas for games and things we can do to raise money for the reunion fund. We need to build it up so that we don't have to worry about being able to afford to do nice things for the next reunion. We have the large covered area for the food, if anyone has sound equipment for music or if anyone has a band that would like to play for us let me know, we need a little help with that if not, all I have is a radio. We can have alcohol there so bring your own if that is what you would like to drink. I would like to have everybody, if they can, to bring one of these; a side dish, a dessert or a salad. Please call me and let me know what you will be able to bring. We are still working on all the other details and what we are going to charge. We want this to be a day that everyone can afford and be able to come and enjoy catching up with old friends. Please let everyone you know that it will be the 13th for sure and to call me with the RSVP's so I can get names and addresses of people that I do not have information for as of yet. I am going to try and have the flyers or notices out in the next month or so. Put it on your calendars I am looking forward to seeing you all there. INTERNET From the April 18, 2002 Wall Street Journal... Take My Used Book, Please! By RUSSELL ROBERTS The Author's Guild is mad at Amazon -- the online bookseller. Getting mad at the river might have been more productive. It seems that Amazon is helping its customers sell -- kids, cover your ears -- used books. With increasing frequency, when shopping for a book on Amazon, you'll find that in addition to offering new copies at those phenomenally low prices, they might even offer a lower price if someone out there has decided to ditch their once-new copy for a little bit of cash. This upsets the Author's Guild, which supposedly represents the interests of writers. The guild thinks it awfully naughty of Amazon to encourage people to buy used books. After all, authors don't make royalties on used books. What in the world was Amazon thinking? Next thing you know, the guild will be picketing libraries. You sell a copy of your book to a library and they have the nerve to let more than one person read it. Can you imagine? If the book is really popular, maybe five, 10 or even 100 people might read it. (The sound you hear is the author weeping softly as those 100 readers yield only a single royalty payment.) What's an author to do? Authors have been known to get on the Amazon site and check their sales rank. Authors of America unite! The next time you check your rank and a used copy pops up as an option, buy it. When it arrives in the mail, bury it or burn it. Certainly don't let anyone read it. Then you can sleep easy knowing that the next person who searches for your book won't have a used copy to choose from. When you're done at Amazon, get on www.bookfinder.com1 and find all the other used copies available online. Buy those too. Burn 'em. Boy, are you going to be happy. Then get in your car and scour all the used bookstores around the countryside. Buy any copies of your book that you find there. Next, it's off to your local libraries. I won't encourage you to steal books from a library. But you might want to misfile your book so readers can't find it. That way they'll all go and pay full price at Amazon. There's only one problem with this strategy. It might actually result in fewer people reading your book. Most authors I know, including yours truly, write for all kind of reasons. Nobody writes to maximize the number of full-price sales. In fact, most of us wish our publishers would charge lower prices so more people would read our books. We're not just interested in money. We're interested in truth and spreading it. We're interested in fame and glory. We actually want people to read our books and to hear our voice. Most of us love Amazon because it helps people find out about our books and avoids the hideous distribution system which works fine for Clancy, King and Grisham but not so smoothly for the rest of us. And some of us are smart enough to realize that not every reader who hears about our book is willing to buy it, even at Amazon's discount prices. I can't speak for all of my fellow authors, but I'm happy to see a used copy of one of my books for sale. (In fact, if you can find one at your local bookstore or on the Web, please help yourself.) I may be sad that someone wanted to part with the little gem, but I'm thrilled to know it might find a home where it may be loved and cherished, and perhaps even read.
