From: Harlan Lau Date: Thu Apr 11, 2002 9:51 pm Subject: Encina Update (alumni challenge, reunions, siblings, madrigals, jack carey, humor, internet, whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, This week's update is sponsored by Rick Larson 62! If you are not interested in the alumni challenge, just scroll down about halfway to the reunion information where the normal Encina Update begins. This is the LAST alumni challenge update before the game. I'll send out something Saturday or Sunday about the results so you won't have to wait until next week to hear how the alumni team did. Then the email blitz will be over for the alumni challenge. ALUMNI CHALLENGE NOTES Bob Goosmann '74 wrote: 1) Check in at the cafeteria for the tours and/or dinner, or go to the gym for the game only. 2) Walk-ups are welcome to attend the 6 p.m. dinner for $20.00--we will have plenty of food and all those who attend are eligible for prizes. 3) The game is at 7:30 p.m. and is free to everyone. Wear the Apache colors (maroon and gold) if you can, and be prepared to make lots of noise for the alumni team. Steve Palmer 74 wrote: No name tags needed for the game. Just show up and enjoy! The first 100 alumni and family members entering the gym will get Encina pom poms, so be ready to cheer and yell!! Yon Gomez '81 wrote: We need more musicians! This is an open invitation to all musicians: If you can join us, please contact me: yonzeno@hotmail.com; or 628-0657 (cell) !!! If you don't get a hold of me and you want to jam with us, show up at 5:00 o'clock in the Encina band room!!!!! COME ON OUT AND HAVE SOME FUN! MEDIA Kerry Shearer '72 prepared a news media advisory which he has faxed to TV media. It gives them basic information about the event and invites them to attend the game at 730pm. I wrote Tom DuHain '68 of KCRA-TV this week. Tom wrote: "Yes, I've been reading your updates with great interest. The event is really alive! I will put the event into the story file for consideration Friday night. Don't know if the evening editors will select that idea for full or partial coverage but we'll give it a try. I really want to attend (and enjoy) one of these gatherings, but I'm generally on duty here most nights until 7:30pm and often out of town doing reports... it's hard to plan for an evening event." Keep your fingers crossed and hope it's a slow news day... We were able to get coverage two years ago for the Homecoming 2000 party. PLEDGE SUMMARY When I sent out the last update we were at $159.00 per alumni point with $3365 in fixed pledges. Today's total is $189.30 per alumni point with fixed pledges of $4642. The Encina alumni blew off the doors again! With Paul Bonderson's matching funds this is $378 per alumni point. $378 per free throw, $757 per basket, $1136 for a three pointer. This is mind boggling. Think about it. Every time the alumni team scores, $750 for Encina! And the great thing is, this is the result of pledges from over 150 different Encina alumni! If the alumni team can match their total of 74 points from last year, per point pledges would amount to $28,000 ! We also have fixed pledges of $4642x2=$9284. An anonymous donor pledged $1000 this week! Our total is over $37,000 for 74 alumni points. A bit less since we will almost certainly max out on Paul Bonderson's matching funds. And this amount does not even include pledges for individual points or admissions. Encina alumni have hit goal after goal. I just can't set a goal high enough for you guys. Is it possible we could actually make it to $200 an alumni point? The current total is $189.30. So tantalizing close... $200 per alumni point is such a nice round number. Go for it. Hope to see you at the alumni challenge! ALUMNI CHALLENGE BAND YEAHHHH! We have three additions to the Alumni Pep Band: Dale Patton 81: trumpet Keith Scheeler 81: trumpet Dennis Mulder 93: drums Yon Gomez 81 wrote: Dale Patton and Keith Scheeler have stepped up to the challenge of the alumni pep band. (trumpets) We can use some bass instruments (string or brass) and some woodwinds. I know they're out there! Come on musicians! If we don't get a bone player or a bass player than I will try to play bass and Dennis Mulder said he can play drums. We need musicians!!! Come on Encina, I know you're out there! Where are all the great musicians that Encina's music program produced over the last 40 years? We need the involvement of just a few folks with the connections to recruit their musical buddies. Times running out. Yon Gomez '81 wrote: We need participants for the pep band @ the Alumni Challenge! If you know musicians from other classes, forward this to them! Where are the "Bell Street House Wreckers"? It's getting late and drums alone will not make a very musical pep band! If you put the word out to all the classes, I will be a contact person, and I'll even try to put this thing together! So, you put out the word and I'll wait to hear from all those great former Encina musicians who want to impress their children. Tell them to break out the brass polish and soak their reeds we have music to play!!!! Yon '81 yonzeno@hotmail.com ALUMNI CHALLENGE PLEDGES *** UPDATE *** Here are the recent pledges. We were at $159.00 per alumni point when I sent out the last update. An anonymous donor has contributed $1000 to the alumni challenge! Christy Cooper 80 wrote: I can't make if from KC to Sacto for the game, but boy would I love to see Mrs. Kojima and classmates. Oh well, put me in for .50/point. Mrs. Tierney (aka Jennefer Smith) -. I'm going to your daughter's school auction. Yeah, yeah, I know. Anyway, match my donation so the KC contingent can add a dollar? Kathie Kloss Marynik 67 wrote: I am happy to report that we two will be attending the for-sure exciting game Friday night. A $25 donation check is going out in Thursday's mail. You are doing such a great job with all this, Harlan. You should be crowned "Lifetime Mr. Encina." $159.50 Our anonymous pledger from the class of 61 says that Karl Schnaidt 91's pledge of $5/alumni point in memory of his father Kenneth Schnaidt 61 should be treated like any other 61 pledge. Therefore it qualifies for his $5 for each $1 pledge, increasing the pledge to $30/alumni point! Many thanks to our generous 61 alumni! $184.50 Dave Robinson 79 wrote: Okay Tote - I'll see your $1.15 and raise you an additional .35 to $1.50 a point. BACK OFF! Oh, and by the way all that Frau Kojima talk was quite touching. 41! Damn you are old! And it's NOT just the years it's the mileage. Shouldn't you be taking a nap rather than posting all these e-mails? Night, Night Red Ball $184.90 Cathy Buchanan Ball 70 wrote: I will join the challenge to meet that $30,000 goal....and challenge James Barbeau to match or beat my pledge of $1.00 per point to the alumni team. thank you Paul for your generosity in matching funds. $185.90 Cecily Knepprath 72 wrote: I'm not sure who to send this to but put me down for $2.00/point. $187.90 Mike Totaro 79 wrote: I only wish I had the cash to match a pledge equal to that of Dave "Red Ball" Robinson's golf score, but I think even Bill Gates would pass on that one! I will however increase my pledge to $1.55 per alumni point AND I will be at the events too! Can you top that one Red Ball??? $188.30 Tim Wheelis '63 and Anne Yallalee Wheelis '63 wrote: We're adding to the pledge $252, which odd figure totals $63 from each of us (Tim Wheelis and Anne Yallalee Wheelis) times two years because we never got around to sending a check last year. Thanks Dicki--er--Paul, for the generous match! Your Mom sends glowing messages in Christmas cards to my folks and its nice to know that sometimes the bragging cards are true! My younger brother Bill (who finished high school at a private school) and Paul were great buddies in their younger years and so we saw a lot of the young Paul. Thanks for spearheading this, Harlan. I met some of the students and staff at Encina who worked on a Department of Health Services project to develop high school curriculum and student advocacy projects around nutrition and physical activity. Great bunch of kids. The curriculum was tested throughout California, and we did it at King City High School. Spending 4 periods a day for a whole week with tenth grade students when you are not a "regular" teacher is an exhausting and eye opening experience!) Gretchen Nichol Worlow 77 wrote: Please put me down for $1.00 per point for the alum team. I sure wish I could attend. It 's sound like so much fun that I have promised myself to attend next year. GO APACHES! $189.30 Who will put over over the $200/point mark! Just $10 more lousy dollars per alumni point. Now it's your turn. I hope you were inspired by these heartfelt pledges and Paul's matching funds to "do it for the kids". Write me at harlan@rambus.com or on your class mailing list. If I missed a pledge or rsvp let me know. I've added the donations for the raffle gifts to the pledges. I think we will start it at 12 noon and we have it until 9pm. I still need some ideas for games and things we can do to raise money for the reunion fund. We need to build it up so that we don't have to worry about being able to afford to do nice things for the next reunion. We have the large covered area for the food, if anyone has sound equipment for music or if anyone has a band that would like to play for us let me know, we need a little help with that if not, all I have is a radio. We can have alcohol there so bring your own if that is what you would like to drink. I would like to have everybody, if they can, to bring one of these; a side dish, a dessert or a salad. Please call me and let me know what you will be able to bring. We are still working on all the other details and what we are going to charge. We want this to be a day that everyone can afford and be able to come and enjoy catching up with old friends. Please let everyone you know that it will be the 13th for sure and to call me with the RSVP's so I can get names and addresses of people that I do not have information for as of yet. I am going to try and have the flyers or notices out in the next month or so. Put it on your calendars I am looking forward to seeing you all there. WOMEN DRIVERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! INTERNET From Brian Livingston's column... GOOGLE'S NEW NEWS Posted April 5, 2002 01:01 PM Pacific Time MILLIONS OF WORDS have been written about Google.com, the rapidly growing search engine that people love for its uncannily relevant results. But the Googlers have just started beta testing a new service that you probably haven't heard boo about. Best of all, this feature is free and open to the public -- if you know where to look. With little publicity or fanfare, Google has added a new search box that allows you to pull up recent stories culled solely from newspapers and magazines around the world, including InfoWorld. You could always, of course, use plain old Google to search the Internet for any news subject you like. But reporters, researchers, corporate analysts, and others often need to trace a widely known fact back to an impeccable source, not a generic Web site. Citing a statistic from The New York Times sounds better than writing that you found it at DrudgeReport.com. Limiting your search to credible news sources almost guarantees that you'll find a quote-worthy reference in seconds using Google's new News Search feature. The time this saves can add up fast. In a study last year of how story assignments are researched by journalists, consultant Jakob Nielsen found that a full one-third of scribblers turned to Google as their very first step (see http://www.useit.com/about/searchreferrals.html ). As a beta program, Google's News Search may not have every story you'd like, but it costs nothing to find out. I'm pleased to pre-announce its slightly out-of-the-way location. To try News Search, go to Google.com, then click Advanced Search. Press your Page Down key to find the News section. Any search terms you insert here will query only bona fide news sources when you click the Search button. (While you're on this page, bookmark it. I always start Web searches at Google's Advanced Search page so I don't have to remember any of that Boolean crap.) The News Search input box now also appears at the top of http://news.google.com , a headline-news page that began only this past December. Interestingly, Google tries to group related news on this page into clusters. Its computers do this purely by word analysis, with no human intervention. This sometimes provides some odd combos, but I find that most of the resulting links make sense. Only the latest week of stories is searched. To look farther back, try NewsTrove.com or NorthernLight.com. But I'm hoping Google lifts its limit soon. It's heartening in the dot-gloom to see Google do well. From zippo in 1998, it now handles 14 percent of all searches worldwide, followed by MSN's 13 percent and AOL's 5 percent, according to StatMarket. Yahoo, a directory that gets search data from Google, is still tops at 41 percent. If you try the beta and see an upgrade you'd like, send e-mail to news-feedback@google.com. MBSA runs on Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems and will scan for missing hotfixes and vulnerabilities in the following products: Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 and 5.0, SQL Server 7.0 and 2000, Internet Explorer (IE) 5.01 and later, and Office 2000 and XP. Although I have every security patch that Windows Update has ever offered to me, the Analyzer is just a 2.5MB file, so I downloaded and ran it as a "what the heck" thing. Surprise! It found two missing security patches, both rated "critical," that the Windows Update "wizard" had never told me about! I was able to then download and install the missing patches using the direct links provided by the Analyzer's report. That immediately switched me from skeptic to believer: Even if you've been religious about applying security patches on your own or through the Update service, grab a copy of the Security Analyzer to make sure something wasn't overlooked.
