From: Harlan Lau Date: Fri Mar 22, 2002 2:50 pm Subject: Encina Update (alumni challenge, art gallery, reunions, siblings, obituaries, bios, basketball, whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, Carol Swinehart Swanson '62 is the sponsor of this week's update! The circulation of the Encina Update reached 2200 this week. ALUMNI CHALLENGE TEAM *** UPDATE *** Last week Bob Goosmann '74 announced the roster for the alumni team. The response has been much less than we anticipated based on last year's rsvps... Come on folks! If you went last year you know how much fun and how exciting the game was. If you didn't go, check out the Alumni Challenge 2001 page and see what you missed: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge01.htm Only three short weeks to the game on April 12th. It's time to contact your buds and sibs and get a group together for the game. The last minute rsvps and uncertain attendance make it very hard for Bob and Steve to plan the alumni challenge. I'll be sending email to the class mailing lists as I did last year, since many alumni do not receive the Encina Update and are only subscribed to their class mailing list. Let's see some support for the alumni team. Talk it up on your class mailing list! Ernestine Holmes '95 wrote and asked why there are no players from the 90s. Bob Goosmann '74 explained that Encina's athletic director Russ Hibbard asked that we not recruit from the last 10 years as he felt an unhealthy rivalry might develop between the current varsity team and recent grads. But players from the early 90s could squeeze in . Co-organizer of the alumni challenge and alumni team captain Bob Goosmann '74 wrote: "Alumni Team Set (Almost) For Hoop Challenge The alumni team for the upcoming Alumni Challenge is almost set! Confirmed players are: Todd Brownell, '73 Bob Goosmann, '74 Kim Tierney '78 Chris Dahlberg '80 Rafael Enriquez, '84 James Jones, '87 Ryan Norris, '89 We have one or two spots open for additional former Encina players, but time is short. Please contact Bob Goosmann at magusbob@hotmail.com if interested. This will be another exciting game against an Encina varsity squad that is reportedly even better than last year's. We will be better also, and expect to give them a good spanking! Also, PLEASE CONSIDER MAKING A PLEDGE BASED ON HOW MANY POINTS THE ALUMNI TEAM SCORES (even 50 cents a point will help). The school needs your support. Thanks!" ALUMNI CHALLENGE PLEDGES Tricia Obermuller Ford '77 wrote: Encina's football team played at my daughter's school this Fall; I was the only adult on Encina's side for the first half of the JV game, and not that many parents showed for the rest of the evening's play. The cheerleaders were energetic, the school staff who showed were classy, and the players wore all different colors of socks... or no socks at all. Put me down for 50 cents per point, with an extra 10 bucks if Scott Brownell sings the Apache fight song, in person in front of the alumni boosters, or on cassette to played in the cafeteria or at the game! Thank you for the hard work, Tricia O. Ford, '77 Alice Braio Bogert '62 wrote that "our reunion committee has decided that we will pledge $1 from each of the attendees at our reunion for encina. trying to drum up support, money and bodies-wise, for the alumni challenge. from our group." Many thanks to the class of 62! I think this is a great idea! I hope you have a huge turnout at your reunion! I hope other classes with emulate the idea of pledging money to Encina and/or the website for each classmate who attends. We're at $12.50/alumni point. ALUMNI CHALLENGE Bob has assembled this year's team from a wide range of classes. I hope you will come out and support your classmates in person and/or by making a pledge for each point they or the team score! Sign up now! 2nd Annual Alumni Challenge Friday, April 12, 2002 4 p.m.—11 p.m. CAMPUS TOURS, 4 p.m.—6 p.m. Current students will provide alumni with guided tours of the campus, including the renowned Encina Art Gallery. This year’s menu features a choice of prime rib with baked potato or smoked turkey with mashed potatoes and dressing. Last year we received pledges totaling $250.00 per point scored by the alumni team (total points scored was 74). Please consider sponsoring this year’s team with a per-point pledge. ERIK BEAUCHAMP 87 Occupation: Law Student Bio: After Graduation, I went to St. Mary's College in Moraga and graducated with a double major in English and Business. My big thing in College: I was on the Rowing Team. After St. Mary's, I looked around for a job, didn't know what I wanted to do and ended up working in Yosemite National Park for a few months. It was a tremendous experience for me and I ended up meeting the woman whom I am now married to: Dedra. After Yosemite, I took a long road trip with Dedra across the country. A few days after the trip, I enrolled in a graduate program at CSUS. I graduated from there with a Master's Degree in English. I thought about teaching at the college level and going to Med School, but they don't pay you much to teach college and begining teachers don't have a lot of security for a long time and I didn't really want to be with sick people, so I decided not to do either. While at CSUS, I got a job with the state doing public relations for the Smog Check program and the Bureau of Automotive Repair. I spent a few years there and enjoyed my time. During that period, I got married and bought a house. My wife and I were married in Yosemite on October 28, 1997, after dating about 4 years. In 1999, I decided that life at the State wasn't enough for me, so I quit and enrolled in Law School at McGeorge School of Law, here in Sacramento. I've kept in the top 15% of my class and made Law Review and have two published articles to my credit. One was recently made required reading in an Elder Law class at McGeorge. I graduate in May 2002 and, unless I really screw up this semester, I should graduate with distinction (sort of like cum laude). I don't have a job lined up, but the job situation for McGeorge graduates is pretty good. In December 2001, my wife and I had our first child, Larissa Collete Beauchamp. Friends: Bob McPherson is the one I really remember. Hobbies: Being with my wife and daughter; photography; genealogy; writing; skiing; hey, there isn't much time to do anything in law school. Kids: My daughter is beautiful, smart, and really progressing, but she's still a little baby. Grade_school: Merryhill on Eastern Ave. Junior_high: Arden Memorable_teachers: I only remember Mr. Figenchu because he was so sarcastic. The rest, like most of my memories of Encina, are only a blur. Favorite_memory: Graduation was pretty cool. Story: I can't remember anything. How long has it been? I was working in the Capitol in the Assembly Special Services (a branch-off to my current job) for a year (my 3rd day was when the truck ran into the building). Then I was offered a position as Sergeant if I could pass all these tests and this academy. Hobbies: I play guitar, write lyrics, write music, and I sing. I Shoot pool at the Depot on 20th and K street from time to time. Kids: Well I don't have kids. I'll never have them biologically, however, maybe some day the the courts will be a little more liberal regarding this issue and how it pertains to me. I'd like to adopt. Grade_school: Crestmont Ele..(Roseville) Ruskin Ele...(San Jose) Memorable_teachers: Probably Mr. Stevens from his drawing and painting class. Great guy. Favorite_memory: smoking weed BASKETBALL I've been enjoying March Madness this past few weeks. Did you see the finish to the Duke/Indiana game. Down by 4 with 15 seconds or so to go, Jason Williams hits a three pointer for Duke and Indiana fouls him! And then he misses the free throw, Duke misses the rebound and loses. What drama. Stanford men were pathetic but Stanford women are still in the hunt. Tune in and watch Nicole Powell go for her third triple-double Saturday night. Go Stanford. Say, do we have any Encina alumni or their kids playing on any of the NCAA teams in the tournament? Let me know. Thought this WSJ article about NCAA basketball was enlightening. Did you know the basketball graduation rate at Oklahoma is 0%. Whoa, are these guys students or athletes? Silly question. March Brings Usual Madness: Basketball Over Academics By STEFAN FATSIS Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL I like March Madness. I like the hyperventilating clarinet players, the paroxysmal coaches, the bracket mathematics, the fact that a team is nicknamed the Salukis. I like the way shill announcers refer to players as "kids" and universities as "programs." I like that my alma mater (Pennsylvania) routinely holds its own against the sports factories. I like the whole trademarked fraud. The National Collegiate Athletic Association's men's basketball tournament is, at its core, a 19-day exercise in self-delusion. There is no honest way to believe that the young men who run around with the name of a school stitched to their chests reflect some higher ideal. Sure, they are on teams, and therefore have forged bonds and set goals. But do they really represent something larger -- students, alumni, academics, tradition? Right. And I'm the starting point guard for Kentucky Friday night. The coping mechanism for fans who are bothered by this stuff is to enjoy the athleticism and forget the hypocrisy. Or to revel in the hypocrisy -- the NCAA bloviating about the evils of gambling while sanctioning a $10 million contest on the Web site of its main patron, CBS; announcers praising the graduation rate of Coach K's Duke players while ESPN's "Outside the Lines" reveals how they are steered toward gut majors. Tilting at Windmills Tournament time is an excellent time to be reminded that there are a few Quixotes taking on the college athletic-industrial complex. As it happens, they are gathering this weekend, just as the NCAA whittles 16 teams to its famous Final Four. The Drake Group, a collection of reform-minded faculty members, was, in the untempered words of one, "first on the ground with a principled stand against the filth and sleaze and corruption" of big-college sports. The professors have been meeting periodically on campuses for almost three years now -- the first was at Drake University; this weekend's is at Oklahoma State -- and slowly their mission is becoming clear. To a prof, the reformers loathe the TV contracts and shoe deals and million-dollar coaching salaries. Some want to bulldoze the stadiums. Others have suggested calling a pro a pro and separating athletics from academics. Now, though, the Drakies are moderating the storm-the-barricades mentality espoused by some and focusing on what they do, or are supposed to do: teach. "Our role is to dig in our heels and take back our classrooms," says Allen Sack, a sociology professor at the University of New Haven. "We should have the same territoriality as coaches. Right now, we're bending too much." The Drake Group's agenda is admirably modest. Ditching the bogus term "student-athlete." Forcing universities to disclose the courses and grade-point averages of athletic teams. Shortening sports seasons to reduce the amount of missed class time. Abolishing special academic counseling centers for athletes (to end the nefarious practice of tutors taking class notes or writing papers). The dozen or so profs at this weekend's confab hope to fine-tune the wording of their plan, then talk about how to activate it, perhaps by pushing the recommendations on faculty senates. "If the faculty stood up and the presidents stood up, a great deal of the problems would be gone tomorrow," says Jon Ericson, a retired communications professor at Drake who has been fighting this fight for years. "All of a sudden we wouldn't have students missing seven, eight, nine classes. We wouldn't have students who are academically unprepared. We wouldn't have students placed in academically safe majors." Coaches say that if players don't show up daily for practice they can't teach them, but if a professor raises a similar complaint, he's accused of being insensitive at best, and racist at worst. The irony isn't lost on the reformers. "In some ways it's a less realistic possibility," Mr. Ericson says of the mission, "because we're trying to get faculty and presidents to do what they already should do but don't." They don't because they are either addicted to the prestige and lucre of intercollegiate sports or they have decided it isn't worth the fight. According to the NCAA's most recent figures, 12 of the last 16 schools in this year's men's tournament -- a Dirty Dozen of the Sweet Sixteen, if you will -- had basketball graduation rates of 50% or lower. Oklahoma's was as round as a basketball: zero percent. Arizona and Missouri tied at 13%. Maryland checked in at 19%. Failure Is Its Own Reward Maybe Oklahoma's professors should be lauded for not passing their jocks. Maybe Duke's 73% hoops grad rate reflects the complicity of professors in letting unqualified students slide by. Either way, the data are more evidence of what's wrong with the system -- of how sports have aided the triumph of anti-intellectualism in the academy. "The point isn't that all this 'hurts the university,' " William C. Dowling, a Rutgers English professor, tells me in an e-mail. "The point is that, in most cases, there is no university there to hurt by the time the institution has been so corrupted by professionalized sports that there is, essentially, nothing left but the boosters' club and the football or basketball franchise." Mr. Dowling is one of the more-radical Drakies. On his own campus, he's fighting to get Rutgers to abandon big-time athletics. He thinks a national coalition of faculty and alumni will emerge over time and do more than take back classrooms. "I think we can overwhelm the corruption," he says. "Dismantle the g--d---- NCAA and get this thing set back on its moral foundations." Meantime, sit back and enjoy the fraud. WHAT'S NEW As I mentioned last week, we are in the process of switching to the new Encina webserver. Ran into some hiccups this week. Hopefully by this time next week the new server will be online. The old server has not been updated since March 8th. All the updates have been made on the new website and will be visible when it goes online.
