Date: Fri Jan 11, 2002 4:23 pm Subject: Encina Update (challenge/forms/mailing lists/hundley/huber/bluffs/siblings/search/bios/internet/humor/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, Jeralynn Cupps Krug '66/67 is the sponsor of this week's update! ALUMNI CHALLENGE It looks like the Alumni Challenge will be on Friday, April 12th. Mark it down on your calendar. Details to follow. What is the Alumni Challenge? See last year: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge01.htm FORMS I forgot to mention that our host upgraded something over the holidays and broke the forms for a week before someone brought it to my attention. If you submitted a form and got an "internal server error", that problem should be fixed now. Please resubmit the form. Sorry for the inconvenience. MAILING LISTS Once again, a reminder to those of you making use of the mailing lists. Please sign your messages. Preferably first and last name so that folks will know who you are. Maiden name is helpful for those who you who go by your married name. Alternatively, most email programs let you associate a name with your email address so your name will be displayed instead of your email address. And most email programs let you automatically append a signature to your messages. I have over 4000 alumni in my address book and I constantly get unsigned messages from folks who expect me to know who they are and recognize their email addresses. Not. Treat email like a letter. You wouldn't send an unsigned letter would you? FAIR OAKS BLUFFS Brett Stover '76 is active in the movement to save the Fair Oaks Bluffs, the "Crown Jewel of the American River Parkway". From the website www.savethebluffs.org: "Since the late 1800's, residents of Fair Oaks, California, and the Sacramento Valley have enjoyed a stretch of land known as "The Crown Jewel of the American River Parkway." Now that scenic spot is about to disappear--unless you can help us save it. A local grass-roots organization, Citizens to Save the Bluffs, is working with community members and numerous public and private entities to turn this land into a beautiful Park/Preserve for future generations to enjoy. The photos show the magnificent Overhanging Oak that juts out from the bluffs (Bob Sours), The Bluffs in the 1890's (Fair Oaks Historical Society), and a deer on The Bluffs (Randy Smith). Wildlife and wildflowers abound in this scenic spot. Situated near the bike trail and the historic footbridge in Old Fair Oaks Village, the land is currently inhabited by deer, wild turkeys, raccoons, hawks, and opossums. A small seasonal wetland stream winds among majestic heritage oaks and other native plants and trees. Our goal is to create friendly nature trails for visitors to enjoy the surroundings--including an unparalleled view of the river from the last piece of scenic bluffs accessible to the public along the American River Parkway. This web site contains some photos of the land we are trying to save--but photos truly don't do it justice. Anyone who has ever visited this site has been struck by its incomparable views and natural beauty. Your support could make all the difference for this endangered open space. Please help us protect this rare natural resource. See our Contribute page for how you can help. For more information, contact Tracy Shearer at savethebluffs@yahoo.com or (916) 961-1729. Check out: catalogs.google.com Very cool. If you like Google, I recommend installing the Google toolbar in your browser: http://toolbar.google.com/ One of the cool features of the Google tool bar is it allows you to search whatever website you are visiting. I use this to search the Encina website. Also, the Google search engine is better than most of the search engines on most websites. Often, when I can't find something on the sacbee website, Google can find it. One of the most useful browser addons ever. HUMOR Courtesy of Jerry Burks 71... FOOT-AND-MOUTH BELIEVED TO BE FIRST VIRUS UNABLE TO SPREAD THROUGH MICROSOFT OUTLOOK Researchers Shocked to Finally Find Virus That the Email App Doesn't Like Atlanta, Ga. (SatireWire.com) — Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Symantec's AntiVirus Research Center today confirmed that foot-and-mouth disease cannot be spread by Microsoft's Outlook email application, believed to be the first time the program has ever failed to propagate a major virus. "Frankly, we've never heard of a virus that couldn't spread through Microsoft Outlook, so our findings were, to say the least, unexpected," said Clive Sarnow, director of the CDC's infectious disease unit. The study was immediately hailed by British officials, who said it will save millions of pounds and thousands of man hours. "Up until now we have, quite naturally, assumed that both foot-and-mouth and mad cow were spread by Microsoft Outlook," said Nick Brown, Britain's Agriculture Minister. "By eliminating it, we can focus our resources elsewhere." However, researchers in the Netherlands, where foot-and-mouth has recently appeared, said they are not yet prepared to disqualify Outlook, which has been the progenitor of viruses such as "I Love You," "Bubbleboy," "Anna Kournikova," and "Naked Wife," to name but a few. Said Nils Overmars, director of the Molecular Virology Lab at Leiden University: "It's not that we don't trust the research, it's just that as scientists, we are trained to be skeptical of any finding that flies in the face of established truth. And this one flies in the face like a blind drunk sparrow." Executives at Microsoft, meanwhile, were equally skeptical, insisting that Outlook's patented Virus Transfer Protocol (VTP) has proven virtually pervious to any virus. The company, however, will issue a free VTP patch if it turns out the application is not vulnerable to foot-and-mouth. Such an admission would be embarrassing for the software giant, but Symantec virologist Ariel Kologne insisted that no one is more humiliated by the study than she is. "Only last week, I had a reporter ask if the foot-and-mouth virus spreads through Microsoft Outlook, and I told him, 'Doesn't everything?'" she recalled. "Who would've thought?"
