This midweek update has the full homecoming rsvp list appended to
the end. Please check to see who's rsvped so far. We have about
250 alumni and faculty RSVPs for this week's homecoming party,
not including family or guests. Time is running out. Get in touch with
your friends, classmates, siblings and make arrangements to attend
the party.

Attached is a copy of the invitation to the Homecoming Alumni
Art Show which opens on Thursday at the Encina Art Gallery.

BOB BINNS

Last week I attempted to track down Encina's first principal
Bob Binns or his son Bob Binns 62. This week I heard from
son Bob Binns 62.

Unfortunately, former principal Bob Binns passed away 7/13/99
in Ashland, Oregon.


MAILING LISTS

As those of you on the class mailing lists will have noticed,
there has been a barrage of rsvp messages recently. I have
found that such mail encourages classmates to rsvp themselves
as they see alumni from their year and adjacent years rsvping.

These rsvp messages will stop after the homecoming game so
don't unsubscribe yourself if you are getting tired of these
messages.


HOMECOMING ART SHOW

Don't forget, the alumni show opens Thursday, October 4th!
Stop by the opening reception and meet the alumni artists.

Attached is a copy of the invitation to the Alumni Art Show which
lists the participating artists and has a map to the Art Gallery.
They have added a few artists, including Anthony Montanino 65
and Charles Warner.

The Art Gallery will also be open Friday after the homecoming
rally so that alumni attending the rally can drop by and see the show.

HOMECOMING 2001

*** IMPORTANT. READ IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND ***

Date: Friday, October 5, 2001
Time: 5pm to 1130pm
Place: El Camino HS cafeteria

Parents.If you think your parents would be interested in attending, by all
means invite them. My mother Mary Lau (Harlan Lau '73, Laurie Lau '77
and Bert Lau '81) will be at the party, along with her friend
Lynn Jensen Milford (John Jensen '83, Mary Jensen '86).
Pat Louther, mother of Janine Louther 70 will be there.

Children. Are welcome to all events!

Parking. If the El Camino parking lot is full, there is also a parking lot
on Eastern. If you are coming north on Eastern, you can turn right into
a big parking lot before you reach the school. .

Alcohol. No alcohol please. We need to be on our best behaviour if
we are to use school facilities for future homecoming parties. Encina
will be providing security and violators will be spanked!

Pregame party. Starts at 5pm in the El Camino High School cafeteria.
The cafeteria faces El Camino and is located to the left of the main
entrance. Look for the Encina Homecoming banner. The entrance is
through the faculty dining room on the left end of the cafeteria.
Please sign the guest book, get your nametag and have your picture
taken if you wish.

Nametags. Preprinted nametags will be provided for those who rsvp.
There will be blank nametags for those who did not rsvp and
for guests who want them. If you are going to the game first, please
stop by the cafeteria and pick up your nametag. Even if you have not rsvped,
you can make your own nametag using a blank Encina Homecoming nametag.
This will identify you as an Encina alumni. We tried taking the nametags to
the game two years ago but there's no place to display them.

Classes. The cafeteria will have a eight tables set up for each five years
of alumni (61-65, 66-70, etc). Look for your class banner to find
your classmates. Please sign in under your classyear so your
classmates will know you are at the party.

Decorations. Please be sure to thank Chris Moser Taylor 78 and her
crew of decorators!

Photos. Throughout the evening, if you see someone with a PHOTO
badge, feel free to ask to have your picture taken. Rollin Coxe 64,
Steve Palmer 74 and I will be taking pictures for the website scrapbook.

Dinner. There will be tables for those who bring food to eat for dinner.
Encina will be selling burgers, chips, and drinks. We will provide
some snacks and munchies.

Faculty. Based on last year's party, most faculty came to the pregame
party and only a few stayed for the game and postgame party. If there
is someone you want to see, come to the pregame party. Teachers
and staff will have FACULTY nametags.

Music. Pam Maples Weber 77 and her husband Ed will be providing
music for the evening via their karaoke system. If you have a favorite
CD you would like them to play from your era, bring it along.

Announcements. About 7pm we will introduce the faculty in attendance
and thank the reunion committee. Then it's time to mosey over to
the stadium and watch Encina's undefeated football team take on
Lindhurst HS. Undefeated, undefeated, doesn't that sound great!

Game. The homecoming game starts at 730 in the El Camino stadium.
Admission is $5 for adults. Encina will mark off a section or two of the
home stands for alumni. This is just so alumni can find classmates more
easily. You can sit anywhere you want.

Parade. The homecoming parade should start about 830.
Drivers should have their cars in the parking lot by 730.
Riders should go down to the parking lot behind the stadium by
800 or so. We are providing alumni cars only for the Encina student royalty.
Please do not try and ride in any of the alumni cars. This has been a
problem in the past. Last year, alumni took the rides that faculty had
been promised, much to my chagrin. This year the only alumni rides are
on the alumni float, which is by invitation only. Do not crash the parade!

Postgame party. After the game, return to the cafeteria from 10 to 1130pm.
Encina will be selling coffee and dessert for those who are interested.
Have your picture taken with your classmates, siblings, family.

Questions. If you have questions, anyone with a COMMITTEE
nametag should be able to help you.

Remember, NO ALCOHOL OR SMOKING is allowed on campus!

house working on the float. There's still lots of finishing up work to do
before the parade if you would like to help.

Many thanks to the alumni who volunteered to drive in the
homecoming parade!

We rounded up eight convertibles, the exact number needed by
the student royalty.

HOMECOMING RALLY

There will be a homecoming rally at Encina in the morning from 11-1135am.
The past two years the alumni have had their own section of the stands
and have helped judge the classes. Please let me know if you plan
to attend as Encina needs this information in advance.

After the rally, stop by the Encina Art Gallery and see the Alumni Art Show.
Then anyone's who still around is welcome to join me for lunch at
Applebee's,
which has lots of Encina memorabilia on display.

Last year we had about 50 alumni at the rally. It's quite a nostalgic
experience to attend the rally at Encina!

CINDY REA MACRAE 68

I wish I could be there for the Homecoming activities. I will be in
Sacramento from Nov. 10-17th but am training for the New York City Marathon
on Nov. 4th. It will be pretty exciting. I am going with Dr. Pamela Peeke,
author of "Fight Fat after Forty" and 12 other patients. We will take the
train to NYC and she is having us picked up in a stretch limo and escorted
around all weekend. Prevention Magazine is writing an article about her
taking us to do the marathon and will have their film crew up there
following us around and then throwing us a party the night of the marathon.
I think that we may be on the Today Show the next morning. We get to stay
at the Plaza Hotel for 2 nights. We are running in support of "Fred's Team"
with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. (Fred Lebow was the founder of
the NYC Marathon and a big supporter of Memorial Sloan Kettering). I am
attempting to raise a minimum of $3000. I will have to remember all of the
perks while I am running those 26 miles. We do 24 miles this Sat. and I
figure that if I can make it that far, I could walk another 2 miles if I had
to.

I will keep my eyes open for next years Homecoming date and maybe I can plan
a trip at that time. It sounds like a lot of fun. Take care.

MAUREEN BOEHLE ELLIOTT

Awhile back, we have exchanged emails and I find myself trying
to find different avenues to locating a friend who is still or
no longer a Math teacher at Encina. Her name is Maureen Boehle,
aka Molly Boehle, or she may have married with the last name of
Elliott. Last I spoke to her was in 97 when I was pregnant with
my son and she had just gotten the job at Encina and I told her
of many stories!!!! Let me know if you have a resource to locate
her or her email through Encina so I may catch up with her.

ATTACK FOLLOWUP

"This is an e-mail from a young ensign aboard USS Winston Churchill
(DDG-81) to his parents. (Churchill is an Arleigh Burke class AEGIS
guided missile destroyer, commissioned March 10, 2001, and is the only
active warship named after a foreign national.).

Dear Dad,

We are still at sea. The remainder of our port visits have all been
cancelled. We have spent every day since the attacks going back and
forth within imaginary boxes drawn in the ocean, standing high-security
watches, and trying to make the best of it. We have seen the articles
and the photographs, and they are sickening. Being isolated, I don't
think we appreciate the full scope of what is happening back home, but
we are definitely feeling the effects. About two hours ago, we were
hailed by a German Navy destroyer, Lutjens, requesting permission to
pass close by our port side. Strange, since we're in the middle of an
empty ocean, but the captain acquiesced and we prepared to render them
honors from our bridgewing. As they were making their approach, our
conning officer used binoculars and announced that Lutjens was flying
not the German, but the American flag. As she came alongside us, we saw
the American flag flying at half-mast and her entire crew topside
standing at silent, rigid attention in their dress uniforms. They had
made a sign that was displayed on her side that read "We Stand By You."
There was not a dry eye on the bridge as they stayed alongside us for a
few minutes and saluted. It was the most powerful thing I have seen in
my life. The German Navy did an incredible thing for this crew, and it
has truly been the highest point in the days since the attacks. It's
amazing to think that only half-century ago things were quite different.
After Lutjens pulled away, the Officer of the Deck, who had been
planning to get out later this year, turned to me and said, "I'm staying
Navy." I'll write you when I know more about when I'll be home, but
this is it for now.

campaign conducted over Yugoslavia. To the pacifists: we do not
conduct wars began by the enemy in a court, much less a "world
court."

Written by Ted Nugent, the rock singer and hunter/naturalists, upon
hearing that California Senators B. Boxer and D. Feinstein denounced him
for being a "gun owner" and a "Rock Star".

This was his response after telling the senators about his past
contributions to children's charities and scholarship foundations
which have totaled more than $13.7 million in the last 5 years!!

"I'm a Bad American-this pretty much sums it up for me. I like big trucks,
big boats, big houses, and naturally, pretty women.

I don't care about appearing compassionate.

I think playing with toy guns doesn't make you a killer. I believe
ignoring your kids and giving them Prozac might.

This is my life to live, and not necessarily up to others expectations.

I don't celebrate Kwanzaa. But if you want to that's fine; I just don't
feel like everyone else should have to.

I believe that if you are selling me a Dairy Queen shake, a pack of
cigarettes, or hotel room you do it in English. As of matter of fact,
if you are an American citizen you should speak English. My uncles and
forefathers shouldn't have had to die in vain so you can leave the
countries you were born in to come disrespect ours, and make us bend
to your will. Get over it.

I know how to count votes and I feel much safer letting a machine with
no political affiliation do a recount when needed. I know what the
definition of lying is, and it isn't based on the word "is"-ever.

I don't think just because you were not born in this country, you qualify
for any special loan programs, gov't sponsored bank loans, etc., so you
can open a hotel, 7-Eleven, trinket shop, or anything else, while the
indigenous peoples can't get past a high school education because they
can't afford it.

I want them to bring back safe and sane fireworks.

I believe no one ever died because of something Ozzy Osbourne, Ice-T
or Marilyn Manson sang, but that doesn't mean I want to listen to that
crap from someone else's car when I'm stopped at a red light. But I
respect your right to.

Our soldiers did not go to some foreign country and risk their lives in
vain and defend our Constitution so that decades later you can tell me
it's a living document ever changing and is open to interpretation.
The guys who wrote it were light years ahead of anyone today, and
they meant what they said - now leave the document alone, or there's
going to be trouble.

I've never owned, or was a slave, and a large percentage of our
forefathers weren't wealthy enough to own one either. Please stop
blaming me because some prior white people were idiots - and remember,
tons of white, Indian, Chinese, and other races have been enslaved too -
it was wrong for everyone of them.

I believe a self-righteous liberal Democrat with a cause is more
dangerous than a Hell's Angel with an attitude.

I own a gun, you can own a gun, and any red blooded American should
be allowed to own a gun, but if you use it in a crime, then you will
serve the time.

I think Bill Gates has every right to keep every penny he made and
continue to make more. If it makes you mad, then invent the next
operating system that's better and put your name on the building.
Ask your buddy that invented the Internet to help you.

I don't believe in hate crime legislation. Even suggesting it makes me
mad. You're telling me that someone who is a minority, gay, disabled,
another nationality, or otherwise different from the mainstream of
this country has more value as a human being that I do as a white male.
If someone kills anyone, I'd say that it's a hate crime. We don't
need more laws! Let's enforce the ones we already have.

I think turkey bacon, turkey beef, turkey fake anything sucks.

I believe that it doesn't take a village to raise a child-it takes
a parent with the guts to stand up to the kid and spank his butt
and say "NO!" when it's necessary to do so. I'll admit that the only
movie that ever made me cry was "Ole Yeller". I didn't realize
Dr. Seuss was a genius until I had a kid.

I will not be frowned upon or be looked down upon or be made to keep
silent because I have these beliefs and opinions. I thought this country
allowed me that right. I will not conform or compromise just to keep from
hurting somebody's feelings. I'm neither angry nor disenfranchised, no
matter how desperately the mainstream media would like the world to
believe otherwise.
