Date: Fri Sep 21, 2001 5:51 pm Subject: Encina Update (art show/float/parade/homecoming/rally/rsvps/reunons/siblings/bios/internet/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, Lora Saunders 67 is the sponsor of this week's update! Lora has sponsored more than one update. Thanks Lora. If you plan to attend the homecoming party please rsvp. In order to build momentum, it's important for folks to see their friends and classmates are going! So get in touch with your friends, classmates, siblings and put the homecoming party on your calendar. We have invited the alumni challenge basketball team and organizers to ride in the homecoming parade! Due to their efforts, serious money was raised for Encina and we would like to honor them during the homecoming parade. Come out and cheer your classmates. *** ONLY TWO WEEKS UNTIL OCTOBER 5TH & THE PARTY *** YEARBOOKS Some of you know that it has long been my intent to put all the Encina yearbooks online on the Encina website. There are several problems. First, I don't have all the yearbooks. Second, many of those I have are signed and not really publishable. Third, can you imagine how long it would take to scan all the yearbooks! Fourth, the disk space constraints at the current host. I sort of mentioned to Becky Hurley and Myrtle Berry that Encina was in a unique position to help with this project as they have a complete set of virgin, unsigned yearbooks just begging to be scanned. And that the alumni would be ever so grateful. I proposed that Encina students scan the eight yearbooks of the classes having reunions each year, so that all the yearbooks would be scanned in after five years. This was just a suggestion and the order the yearbooks are scanned has yet to be determined. If you would like your yearbook to be scanned earlier rather than later, I'm sure a contribution to the Encina Booster Club would not go unnoticed . The students who scan each yearbook will be immortalized by having their pictures on the webpage for that yearbook and there will be a note asking appreciative alumni to make a voluntary contribution to the Encina Booster Club to thank the students and Encina. Maybe Paul will even let them ride on the alumni float??? Becky Hurley is looking for students to start scanning in this year's batch of yearbooks. As I get the yearbooks, I'll be adding them to the website. Be patient, this is still a long term project but at least the wheels are in motion. I would just like to express my appreciate to Encina for approving the long term project to put the yearbooks online! WEBSITE We are in the process of slowly moving the Encina website to it's new home. As you may remember, Ron Mintle '65 volunteered to host the Encina website at his company Yellow Magic in Temecula, CA. I made a CD image of the website and Ron is having his IT folks install it on one of the Yellow Magic servers. Since we are moving the website from a linux server running Apache to a Windows server, I expect there will be some problems getting the various scripts to work again. But within a couple of weeks I hope the Encina website will be up and running in it's new rentfree home. We're currently paying our host $115/month to host the 300mb+ Encina website, which is one of the reasons I appreciate those of you who sponsor the website and the homecoming party. Paul Bonderson '70 has volunteered to fund the purhase of an Encina webserver, which will be installed at Yellow Magic later this fall. Then the website will be moved onto our own server and the Encina website will be self sufficient so long as Ron Mintle '65 owns Yellow Magic. Once again, many thanks to generous alumni Ron Mintle '65 and Paul Bonderson '70 ! Becky, maybe the 65 and 70 yearbooks would be a good place to start scanning... HOMECOMING ART SHOW Myrtle Berry asked me to remind you that the alumni art show at the Encina art gallery opens October 4th at 3PM ! "HOMECOMING: THE ALUMNI SHOW October 4 - November 2, 2001 Opening Reception: Thursday October 4 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm Featuring artists who have graduated from Encina High School including John Landgraf 61, Richard Feese 66, Cathy Landgraf, Phil Amrhein 67, Jay Musler 67, Nina Paladino 67, Joe Amrhein, Mike Solomon 66, David Stone, and others. Suzanne Adan who is the Encina gallery curator does not know all of the artists out there who graduated from Encina. She went through the yearbooks and found the ones she knew how to get in touch with. Anyone interested in participating in the show should contact Mike Stevens at 971-5881 Mon-Fri. between 8:00 - 2:00 pm." ALUMNI FLOAT Lora Saunders '67 and Kathleen O'Neill Cabe '79 have both pledged $50 towards the riders for the alumni float! Previous pledges are Larry Bain '79 for $50 and Tom Dugally '78 with $100. Thank you! The students have chosen long time teacher Don Brodnansky and current student Daniel Centers to represent Encina on the float. The other riders so far are former teacher Christine Kojima and yours truly, Harlan Lau '73. From the Float Committee: "What was so important a couple weeks ago is trivial compared to recent events. Once a single missing intern captivated America for months! Spending money and lots of hours dressing up a trailer to make a quick pass around a stadium track is not going to change lives. But we sincerely think Encina needs our support just as much now and we should use the Homecoming and alumni events to lift our spirits, as football is very American. Some of us middle-aged alumni wanted to show you we now have the resources to build a great float and make a party out of it. We can give the float a Stars and Stripes theme and give everybody flags to wave, but it’s still just a trailer with a five-minute mini-party on top. But we have raised money for the Alumni Association by having people make pledges to ride. Sure most of us want to ride on the float out of ego, but last year’s float was something everyone liked seeing including the current students. Ego driven or not, how many high school students get to see their school’s alumni show up in the numbers we have the last few years? Of a thousand recent quotes the one that sticks in my mind this week is the one that I read on the last update "They hit the buildings but missed America." Let’s show our support by making this the best alumni event ever!" HOMECOMING PARADE We have invited the alumni challenge basketball team and organizers to participate in the homecoming parade: Bob Goosmann 74 (yes) Chuck Armstrong 77 Joe Niederberger 79 Chris Dahlberg 80 Henry Meier 80 Scott Simon 80 Geoff Shumway 89 Jason Talanian 90 Steve Palmer 74 (organizer, yes) I have been unable to contact Chuck, Scott or Jason. If you are in contact with them, please let them know they are invited. Becky Hurley wrote that the theme for this year's parade is "Scary Movies/Fright Night/Freak Night". We have received permission for Jerry Burks '71 to ride his Harley in the homecoming parade. Jerry wrote: "I have a convertible Mustang (and a BEAUTIFUL HARLEY!) (hehe) available for the parade... I'm not giving up on ya about the bike Harlan... Picture this, my Harley Davidson (all American) leading the Alumni portion of the parade with my pasenger waving either a large (classroom size) American flag or an Alumni Flag! Just the thought of it brings tears to my eyes... :)" I just heard from Kris Grasso Elmer 70 this afternoon and she will be able to drive her convertible in the parade again this year. Thanks Kris! In addition we have... Kermit Pahl 61 wrote: "HALAN, IF YOU LIKE I HAVE A 1932 FORD T-BUCKET ROADSTER (HOT ROD) THAT WE COULD USE FOR THE HOMECOMING PARADE. IT COULD HOLD ONE OR TWO PEOPLE." Yon Gomez 81 wrote: "I have a 1990 Chrysler LeBaron. It's silver with red interior and is in excellent condition. If the committee would like to see it before they decide to let me drive it, that would be fine. I love to show it off!!!" With Jerry riding his Harley instead of driving his Mustang, we are down to only three alumni convertibles. I have written past drivers and we could really use your help. Becky Hurley writes that the students could use about eight convertibles for the royalty. Also, we need a car capable of pulling the alumni float. You can see pictures of last year's homecoming parade here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming2000/game.htm HOMECOMING 2001 Date: Friday, October 5, 2001 Time: 5pm to 1130pm Place: El Camino HS cafeteria Friday, October 5th, will be here soon. Please rsvp if you plan to attend. For more information and the rsvp list see: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming2001.htm There will be a homecoming rally at Encina in the morning. The past two years the alumni have had their own section of the stands and have helped judge the classes. The pre-game party is from 5PM to 730PM in the El Camino Cafeteria which faces El Camino Ave. Look for the Encina Homecoming banner. Encina will be selling food and drinks or you can bring your own. We will have tables set up for those who want to eat dinner at the pre-game party. We will have banners for each group of 5 years (61-65,66-70, etc) to make it easier for classmates to rendezvous. We will walk over to the stadium for the homecoming football game from 730PM to 10PM between Encina and Lindhurst HS. Admission is $5. At halftime, the alumni will have alumni cars and an alumni float in the homecoming parade. You can also buy food and drinks from the snackbar in the stadium. After the game, we will reconvene in the cafeteria from 10PM to 1130PM for the post-game party. Going Down in History Like so many of us, technical and science students will be asking how both towers could have failed so catastrophically, claiming so many lives - or, perhaps, how they managed to stand as long as they did, permitting so many people to escape. An airplane strike on a New York skyscraper wasn't unheard of, of course, when the Trade Center was designed and built in the late '60s. Fourteen people died when an American B-25 bomber accidentally struck the Empire State Building's north face in thick fog in 1945. Twenty years later, the twin towers were designed to withstand other air accidents, from strikes by liners as large as 707s. In The Washington Post, a construction supervisor describes the emotions vested in the towers that made them much more than mere real estate; crews of the day signed steel beams as they went into place. One of the original architects notes that the smaller planes of 35 years ago didn't carry the fuel payload found in a 767 and speculates on the design principles that left the building standing when its base was bombed in 1993. It appears that the terrorists exploited those same strengths in the design to bring it down this week in a progressive collapse. Engineers for CNN and the BBC offer consistent theories for their ability to stand and their tortuous deaths. The BBC page includes illustrated structural details. Canada's Discovery Channel interviewed an expert on the effects of blast on buildings, a member of the forensics team who investigated the Oklahoma City explosion. He discusses how studying video footage might lead to even safer buildings. 1945: http://abcnews.go.com/sections/us/DailyNews/WTC_planecrash_empirestate010911 .html Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A34000-2001Sep14.html Design: http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/09/12/wtc.architect.cnna/ CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2001/COMMUNITY/09/13/rittenhouse.cnna/index.html BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/americas/newsid_1540000/1540044.stm Discovery.ca: http://discovery.ca/inc/demo.asp?Video=exn20010914-forensic-engineer.asx WHAT'S NEW 9/20/01: Elayne Roberts 66, Cheryl Roberts 62, Bill Davies 62, Jim Roberts 69, Aaron Berry 89, Alan Berry 88, Kerry Stewart 83, Ken Blas 70, Eve Mathes 84 9/19/01: Jerry Goetzman 62, Dan Goetzman 63, Debby Larraguivel 96 bio, Greg Starr 69, Ron Starr 65, Mike Starr 71, Gregory Herrera 66/bio, Jack Turner 66, Joline Dick 01, Robert Smith 66 bio 9/18/01: Monkia Lew 78, Jim Bender 62, Lisa Green 78, Kathey Henley 65 update, Doug Cook 67, James Cook 69, Charlie Buckalew 96/bio, Leo Arnell 96, Vince Guzman 96, Brandy Allmendinger 86, Clarence Allmendinger 87, Ed Zube 66 update 9/17/01: Delores Martin 99 update, Robert Hinsley 95 update, Nancy Boloyan 66, George Cate 63, Myra Calhoun 79, Bree Margeson 92, Jeff Bertacchi 77, Christine Lund 65, Sally Rulison 68, Sande Byereley 74 update 9/14/01: Eugene Erickson 67, Karen Erickson 70, Dawn Beckman 82, Frances Sanchez 99, Hilda Sanchez 98, Lusandra Nareau 64, Barbara Nareau 68, Bill Spencer 82, Candy Koontz 75, Daniel Twitty 66/67 classmates.com: Patricia Van Sant 65, Louis Greene 65, Leslie Sutton 66, Judith Morrison 66, Yvonne Littlejohn 73, Joe Lewis 74, Carol Livecchi 79, Robert Tadlock 80, Michael Ann Runyon 81, Lisa Poulsen 81, Connie Koontz 81, Karen Triplett 83, Toy Morris 86, Blith Newton 89, Steven Lawrence 89, Stacey Jones 98, Leeroy Davis 99, Kristina Stebkova 99, Maggie Nguyen 00, Linda Lee 01 Don't forget to submit your contact information or bio: contact: www.encinahighschool.com/directory/submit_contact.htm bio: www.encinahighschool.com/submit_bio.htm Harlan Lau '73 Encina HS alumni webmaster www.encinahighschool.com harlan@rambus.com
