ENCINA ALUMNI,

This week's update is sponsored by an anonymous donor from the class of 75.
I received a $140 check to pay for the registration for the Encina domain

CHALLENGE

The Alumni Challenge is catching fire! We're talking conflagration!

Last Friday we had about 50 rsvps and pledges for $2 for each point
scored by the alumni team, along with numerous pledges for individual
players on the team.

Today we have about 100 rsvps and pledges for an astounding
*** $237.85 *** for each point scored by the alumni team!
That's not a misprint. Go to the free throw line, sink two free throws,
$500 (almost) for Encina. Estimate a reasonable score for the
alumni and do the math!

This amazing pledge is largely thanks to Paul Bonderson 70 ($100/pt),
Gerry Coppock 78 ($75/pt) and Ronald Morgan 70 ($50/pt). Thank you
kind sirs! In addition, Paul has said that he will MATCH any higher
bids made by other classes!

Our revised goal is $250 per alumni point so we have $12.15 to go!
Please help us with just a few more dollars...

If anyone wishes to change their pledge from a classmate to any alumni,
we would certainly appreciate it!

We have numerous other pledges for individuals, cheerleaders and
even blocked shots. Terri Jurich 74 and Kathy Webber Gill 72 are willing
to cheerlead provided they can find a suitable costume. Please write
if you can help with a songleader/cheerleader costume! It's worth
another $100 in pledges for Encina.

In addition, we have received many generous donations from alumni
who are unable or too far away to attend in person.

We would like to thank everyone who has rsvped, made donations or
pledged for their support and generosity! I think I can safely say
that alumni have exceeded the wildest expectations of organizers
Bob Goosmann 74 and Steve Palmer 74.

Remember, as an incentive to pay early, the cost is:
$20 before May 1st (NEXT TUESDAY)
$25 after May 1st

If you have signed up, please send in your check to confirm
that you are coming. We much prefer early signups to paying at
the door, as we need a headcount for the caterer.

and who is retiring from Del Campo this June, will be at the

party which starts the same night at 730!

*** Note that SAFE will hold it's first fundraiser May 5 at the Sutter Club
from 630pm to 1230am. The Sutter Club is located at 1220 Ninth St.
Tickets are $65. Proceeds will pay for Encina students to participate
in extracurricular activities. ***

Tom Dugally 78 is friends with SAFE founder Lisa Gregory. The event
is a Cabaret night at the Sutter Club. Please help if you can!

Extracurricular-activity supplies to be funded by program grants

Helmets, shoes and uniforms may seem to be small investments to
participate in extracurricular high school activities, but they can add up
to big money. School Activities For Everyone and the San Juan Unified School
District's CalWORKs Youth Program will offer grants for
equipment and supplies to low-income Encina High School students who would
like to join school teams and clubs.
Myrtle Berry, principal at the Arden-area high school, said that when she
heard about the program, "it was like manna from heaven. Many (Encina)
students can't afford extracurricular activities that students from other
schools can," Berry said. "Our kids couldn't afford $60 to $70 to play
sports. We were elated that some of our athletes and musicians could be
sponsored through a program such as this."
Lisa Gregory founded the nonprofit organization in response to the 1999
massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo. "Students who act out
are often separated from the student body," Gregory said. "I wanted to do
something, to create options for students, to get them involved."
SAFE will begin accepting applications for grants from Encina students
June 1. The pilot program eventually will be offered at other San Juan
district high schools.
SAFE's budget is contingent upon corporate donations and fund-raising
efforts. Gregory anticipates raising $25,000 for its
first year of offering grants at Encina.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for youth who otherwise couldn't afford
to join in school programs," said Melanie Barbeau, a district community
intervention specialist with CalWORKs Youth Program, a program that offers
after-school activities for low-income children ages 12 to 18.
CalWORKs, a federal welfare reform program that helps teens become
self-sufficient, will help SAFE identify eligible youths and will monitor
the program. Students who receive reduced-cost or free lunches are eligible
to apply for the grants, which could range from the price of a pair of socks
or a baseball mitt to a set of golf clubs.
"Sixty-seven percent of the population at Encina qualify for the
reduced-lunch program," Gregory said. She said that 435 students receive
free lunches and 77 pay a reduced cost for lunch.
Berry said she likes the fact that SAFE supports academics and attendance.
"It's tied into what we, as a school district, are trying to do," she said.
SAFE requires students to maintain a 2.0 grade-point average for athletics
and 2.5 for all other extracurricular programs with no failing marks in any
class. Students also are expected to meet the school's attendance policy in
compliance with California's compulsory education laws.
Gregory said the organization would grant money on an individual basis,
rather than by program, to avoid bias when choosing between football and a
music program. Students interested in receiving a grant must apply through
the SAFE Web site. Computers are available for student use in the Encina
library.
A qualifying student will be assigned to one of five mentors at the
school. The mentor may be a counselor, teacher or administrator. Mentors
will monitor the student's school and program attendance, academic progress,
referrals for discipline and other points associated with school
performance. The information will be reported to SAFE via an online form
that can be accessed only by the mentors and will be used to determine the
effectiveness of the program, Gregory said. "The program is set up to be
very user-friendly for students and for mentors," Gregory said.
Barbeau said that she anticipates seeing students' academic progress
improve as a result of their increased participation in school activities.
"For our (student) population, making a connection is very important,"
Berry said. "Our kids need to be a part of a club. It will keep them in
school."
SAFE will hold its first fund-raiser from 6:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. May 5 at
the Sutter Club, 1220 Ninth St. Tickets are $65. Proceeds will pay for
Encina students to participate in extracurricular activities. Gregory said
she hopes to raise the $25,000 needed to offer grants for one year.

talked myself into taking over the responsibility of webmaster (April

Hello everyone! Here is the update on our 10 year reunion! The date and
location are set! We will be having it in the upstairs Banquet Hall at
Grapes Restaurant between 11th and H Street in downtown Sacramento. Phone

I've hired Swentowsky Photography to shoot the reunion. We will have a
"Prom Style" backdrop for photos of you and your guest or partner. These
pictures will be for the reunion books. Full color, soft-bound books
created by Swentowsky Photography for only $15.00! (That will be included in
the ticket price). Also, you will receive your proofs by mail with the
option to purchase!

Grapes Banquet Hall features it's own kitchen and full bar. To keep cost
per person down, everyone will have to purchase their own cocktails. Our
menu includes such items as stuffed mushrooms with crab meat and pepper jack
cheese, prosciutto wrapped melon, BBQ chicken quesadillas with onions and
mushrooms, vegetable platters, fresh bread and more!

We are hoping to do a photo slide show with pictures of you in High School
and pictures of you, or you and your family today. So look through those
old and new albums and send them directly to me with your name, phone number
and address on the back of EACH picture. This will all be handled directly
through me, so your photos will be safely returned to you either at the
reunion or by mail.

We are going to have a fabulous party! I'm looking forward to seeing all
our old friends and classmates. What I would like everyone to do is e-mail
me with your phone numbers and addresses (If you have not done so already),
and numbers of anyone you know from our class that might not know about the
reunion yet. Along with that, please e-mail me with a tentative RSVP so we
can figure out a price per person. I'm Catering some of it myself to keep

SAVING THE BLUFFS

of land above the American River as public land. The organization is called
Citizens to Save the Bluffs. My family has donated to this effort and we
recently received a notice that they have obtained $735,000 of the 1.2
million needed. They received an extension until May 1st and are considering
purchasing 2/3 of the property for now. Therefore, they need another
$165,000 more or less within the next week! So here is the contact

GARY GREENBAUM

Occupation: Teacher

Bio: I left Encina in 1980 and moved to Elk Grove. I met my wife, Colleen,
had two children, Danielle (16) and Brittany (14) and I have been teaching
at Elk Grove High since 1981.

Trivia: Two years ago I was near death and in desperate need of a kidney
transplant. My wife--my match for life and in health--was the perfect
donor. We are both doing great.

Friends: I had so many students that I loved--far too many to list.
However, I have always stayed in close contact with Erik Olson.

Hobbies: I love spending time with my family. We have traveled a great deal
because my wife is also a teacher. We have been to five Carribean islands
on three separate trips. We have taken cruises to Alaska, Canada, Mexico,
and the Carribean. Finally, we have taken numerous trips to Disneyland, San
Diego, Monterey, San Francisco, and annual trips to Tahoe.

Kids: Danielle (16) is 5' 9" tall and as gorgeous as her mother. She is an
honor roll student and a member of the junior council. She works at a local
coffee shop--similar to Central Perk on Friends--and drives a 96 Mustang
that she earned. Brittany (14) is an adorable freshman cheerleader. Her
squad of 20 girls competes all over the state. They have won every
competition that she has attended. Brittany is extremely artistic and also
earns excellent grades.

Memorable_teachers: I learned the most from Carol Takeuchi-Chambers about
teaching and from Sue McGuire about caring about the students.

Favorite_memory: Beating Rio Americano in a swim meet by one point.
Actually, I have nothing but fond memories of my years at Encina. I have
loved getting in touch with old friends through this wonderful website. I
hope to hear from many more.


BILL BOSWELL 67

Occupation: corporate jet mechanic

Bio: I went into the Air Force in July of 68 and retired as a Chief Master
Sergeant in February of 92. Did a tour in Vietnam (69-70) and two tours in
Germany. Also was stationed in California, Arizona, Florida and Nevada.
Went to work for Northrop Grumman on the B-2 bomber for 7 years in Palmdale.
Moved to upstate New York last year where I work on executive type jets at
the Binghamton Regional Airport. Married for 30 years to Joyce Outhuse, who
is from Massachusettts. We are ready to move back to California...winter is
hard in this part of the country.

Trivia: Saw a lot of the U.S. and some of Europe and Southeast Asia while in
the Air Force. Was fortunate to be part of the flight test programs for the
F-117 Stealth Fighter and the B-2 Stealth Bomber. Went back to college and
received a B.S. degree from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.

Friends: Randy Crosby, Ken Clark, Laurie Lambert, Dan Bryant (68) Dave
Young, Vicki Andrew, Sue Phelps (68). I saw Laurie and Randy at the 20th
year reunion. Saw Randy and Dan Bryant at Randy's parents' 50th wedding
anniversary a couple of years ago. Would like to hear from anyone in the
class of 67.

Hobbies: I play golf when ever I can, which is not often enough living in
upstate New York. Courses are beautiful in this part of the country. Also
do a little hiking and running. I played fast pitch softball for a number
of years which I thought was pretty cool since I was cut from the Encina
baseball program all 4 years.

Kids: We have two children: Keith is 27 and is in the Air Force stationed in
Phoenix with his wife and 1 year old son. When Keith was 16 he played in
the Big League World Series, representing the team from Europe. Our
daughter, Andrea, is 24 and works as a full time counselor for at risk kids
in Florida. She went to college on a basketball scholarship and has a
degree in English.

Grade_school: 1st - 5th grade in Massachsetts.

Junior_high: 8th grade at Arcarde, over by Mira Loma high

Memorable_teachers: Mrs. Volz' German 1 class...a lot of fun...Mr. Day's
German II class..a lot of work. Mr. Dederian's civic class, senior
year..one of the best teachers ever.
Coach Gallaway's Marine Corps style of P.E. conditioning...that was a
blessing later in life, trust me.

Favorite_memory: finally being a senior...the senior lawn...playing dodge
ball on rainy days in the gym...seniors against the other 3 classes...all
the proms and homecoming dances..really good times..all the muscle cars the
rich kids drove..the parking lot before speed bumps made for some good burn
outs.

Story: I only missed a couple of days of school during the whole 4 years. I
took off early one afternoon to have my mom take me to get my driver's
license when I was a junior. The next morning I was in Mr. Bassett's office
explaining why I left an hour early. It still makes me laugh. I flunked
Algebra two years running...once as a sophomore and once again as a
junior... big fat F both times. Sitting next to the beautiful Irene
Birchfield (68) during my junior year didn't help me concentrate. But
somehow I made it through college Algebra, Trig and Calculus twenty years
later.


GEORGINA SITAR 88

Occupation: Archaeologist/Future Forensic Anthropologist

Bio: Went to JC's while working full time.
Joined the Air Force in '93, worked on F-16 Fighter Aircraft at Misawa AB,
Japan and Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, NV.
Met my civilian hubbie there then got out.
Came back to sac to get a forensic science degree, ended up in archaeology.
Graduated with my BA, applying for graduate school elsewhere for forensic
anthropology.

Trivia: Turned into a non-racist, polyamorous punk chick with aspirations of
being the next Dr. Clyde Snow (a premier forensic anthropologist).

Friends: Ummmm...not sure, maybe a couple of computer geeks, Corrine of the
burgandy bob, pretty much the drama crew...lost contact with everyone.

Hobbies: Unicycling, juggling, wargaming, SCA, forensic anthropology, and
occasionally the tin whistle and the guitar. Tried a couple of forms of
martial arts but haven't found the right school yet.

Kids: None yet, one planned for grad school.

Memorable_teachers: Ack, been so long, German teacher, Drama teacher, cool
English teacher (rocky horror picture show video game).

Favorite_memory: Graduation.


ERICK CRANS 96

Occupation: Painter/General Maintenance

Bio: After graduation, I attended the University of Brigham Young, in Utah.
After that, I spent two years in the Dominican Republic on a mission for my
church. I then returned home in May of 2000 and started working as a
painter and doing general maintenance for a property management company. I
then met my wife to be in August of 2000, and we were married on April 8,
2001. I still work for the same company and am attending American River
College in preperation to tranfer to Sac State soon.

Friends: My best friends in school were Catherlyn Burch, Jesse Baggs, Leo
Arnell and Jason Burns. I have lost constant contact with them, but still
see them every once and a while.

Hobbies: I enjoy putting together Thomas Kincaid puzzles and spending time
with my wife. We like to visit family often and be outdoors.

Kids: No children yet, but hopefully soon!

Grade_school: Howe Avenue Elementry

Grade_school_friends: Charlie Buckalew and Leo Arnell were two of my best
friends that attened Howe Avenue with me.

Junior_high: Jonas Salk

Junior_high_friends: Again, Charlie Buckalew and Leo Arnell were their at
Jonas Salk. Most of my friends I had I met in High School.

Memorable_teachers: My most memorable teachers is hard to say. Almost all
my teachers made a lasting impression on me. On the top, I would have to
say Dennis Wallin, Susan Bush, Mr. Luchini and Mr. Freedman. Like I said, I
enjoyed all my teachers, but these four taught me the most. Mrs. Bush for
always being willing to chat with us students, and just had a personality
that I feel brought out the best. Mr. Wallin for being a great Student
Activities Director in Student Government. He guided me well in my term as
ASBP and was always willing to help us whatever he could. Mr. Freedman for
being a good club advisor, whose humer made math and physics fun. Also Mr.
Luchini for being the best class advisor I think there ever will be. He put
up with us, he taught us, he supported us, and he was a true mentor.

Favorite_memory: All four years of Encina were great memories. My favorite
memories mostly involve Student Government Acivities. The rallies,
carnivals, BBQ's and more, I feel that the Encina was just one big memory
that I will always love.

Zooming the Legal System

I am an attorney--a non-practicing, disaffected one. Tell me
you're thinking about going to law school and I'll do
anything short of physically blocking the gates in an effort
to stop you. I stay so out of touch with my alma mater that
the alumni office still thinks I live at home with my
parents and am unemployed, and it will forever be thus. Why
do I feel this way? The legal system is so subverted,
protracted, and expensive that it seems designed merely to
justify the high fees lawyers charge. I recently helped my
friend Wendy copyright some of her songs, and the
instructions to fill out this simple form flummoxed me time
and again. This is not my failing, despite what my old law
professors might tell you.

The legal profession doesn't want my friend Wendy to do it
herself or for you to handle such basic legal matters
yourself. What the profession wants is for you to go to a
law firm where a paralegal will take that simple form, fill
it out, and charge $100 an hour for the privilege. He will
then show it to a lawyer who will bill $300 an hour to look
over something tht you could have done yourself for free if
the instructions weren't designed to send you into the arms
of an attorney.

Along comes this new Website called LegalZoom
(http://www.legalzoom.com), founded by a couple of refugees
from some of the biggest law firms in the country (Skadden,
Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom; Sullivan & Cromwell), that does
these sort of simple legal processes (wills, incorporations,
copyright registrations) at a fraction of the cost. The site
offers upfront, flat-fee pricing: It walks customers through
an interview where they enter in all of the needed
information, then creates the proper document, files it
within 48 hours, and guarantees its work. As a recovering
attorney, how can I not cheer the availability of these
kinds of services at these prices? Of course as a
journalist, how can I not say, another dot-com looking to
transform a staid industry? In this marketplace?

Well, that's what Brian Liu, LegalZoom's CEO, and Brian Lee,
its president, are doing, and it appears to be working. Live
for a just over a month, Liu reports the site now has more
than 1,000 customers who've taken advantage of its services.
If the site keeps up its current pace of growth it will be
turning a profit next month. What was the last dot-com you
heard of that had done that?

It helps that Liu and Lee haven't fallen into the traps
"dot-coms" frequently slip into. LegalZoom has just nine
employees. Its Los Angeles offices aren't in Beverly Hills
or a downtown office tower, but in the reasonably
nondescript Larchmont area. It spends almost nothing on
marketing. "By using stuff that's out of favor right now,
like banner ads, and by being smart about targeting, we're
getting these resources cheap," says Liu. "For every $1 we
spend on marketing, we're getting $3 worth of business."

And while LegalZoom undercuts what lawyers would charge--by
a lot--the business still has some pretty attractive
margins. "We're selling paper forms," says Liu, with a
chuckle. The legal documents are created automatically; a
staffer checks them over and sends them to the right
courthouse or government agency. So even in that $55
standard last will and testament package, which is one of
LegalZoom's bestsellers, there's plenty of profit potential.

Liu and Lee see their market as potentially huge. Most
average Americans can't afford a lawyer, and the self-help
legal industry is experiencing 20% annual growth, according
to Lee. Out of the $100 billion legal services market, about
$15 billion goes to "routine" stuff, meaning "things that
don't require legal decisionmaking," explains Lee. "It's
just a matter of filling out the form correctly." Siphon off
some of that, add some of the 80% of self-filers who make
mistakes and have to refile, then include the folks who
neither want to spend money on a lawyer nor do the work
themselves, and you've got a tidy sum.

But in this day and age, who will go to a dot-com for legal
services? "In order for people to trust us, people need to
know that there are quality attorneys behind it," says Liu.
While Liu and Lee graduated from UCLA, one of the country's
best law schools, and worked at top firms, these two
30-somethings knew that they were still "nobodies."

Enter Robert Shapiro, probably best known for representing
O.J. Simpson. Liu and Lee targeted Shapiro, and he signed on
as an angel investor and the name that would front the
business. His picture is right on the homepage, linking to a
message about trust and the importance of having a will.
Isn't having O.J.'s attorney a bit of a marketing risk?

"We thought there might possibly be a little bit of a
backlash," says Lee. "But we figured people may not like
him, but they know he's a good attorney." After all, how
many attorneys do you really like? I can't think of any, and
I went to school with 400 of them. Lee reports they haven't
had any complaints about Shapiro.

Ultimately LegalZoom's biggest asset may be its attitude.
Unlike my "topple the castle" feelings about the legal
system's hierarchy, Liu and Lee don't take the bait when I
lead them into that discussion. "We don't bag on lawyers,
saying they're terrible and you should use LegalZoom
instead," says Liu. "People have a choice and that's what we
want to provide." A socially redeeming dot-com making money?
Case closed.
