Date: Fri Apr 13, 2001 1:47 pm Subject: Encina Update (homecoming 2001/mcbrian/band/team/rsvps/challenge/rsvps/kojima/reunions/siblings/search/howard/bios/obits/humor/california/tech/homecoming/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, This week's update is sponsored by Kris Kaney 76. This week I renewed registration of the Encina domain www.encinahighschool.com for another five years at a cost of $140. Your contributions and support are always welcome. We have some exciting news regarding to the Alumni Challenge this week. Please be sure and read the update. Okay, okay, I'll give you a hint. There will be an alumni pep band playing during the alumni challenge basketball game! HOMECOMING 2001 Encina principal Myrtle Berry wrote that the Homecoming game has been scheduled for Friday, October 5, 2001, against Lindhurst High School. Please note this date on your calendars. Reunion committee, start getting psyched up for next fall. The Alumni Challenge would be a good way to boost your school spirit in the meantime... CHARLES MCBRIAN 87 Last Friday I received a box from Charles McBrian 87, which contained a copy of Dreamweaver Ultradev/Fireworks. Once I learn how to use this web software, I plan to convert the Encina website from Frontpage to Dreamweaver so at some point there will be a new look to the website. Many thanks to Charles McBrian 87, who works for Macromedia in SF and sent me this free copy of Macromedia software. If we have any Dreamweaver experts out there who would like to have some input on the future look of the Encina website, please write. ALUMNI BAND The idea of having an alumni pep band at the Alumni Challenge originated when Steve Picanco 78 wrote: "This Alumni Challenge sounds great! But, let's not forget the REAL entertainment at Encina High Basketball games....at least when *I* went there (1974-1978). That was ... THE BAND!! What about an alumni pep band to get the crowd going?? Because you just KNOW there are going to be lots of injury time-outs!!! Go Apaches/Bulldogs!" Unfortunately, Steve will be out of town May 11th but Steve Palmer 74 pursued the idea and contacted Kurt Pearsall 74 and Mike Pittsley 71. Steve Palmer 74 wrote: "I just spoke with Kurt Pearsall (trumpet from 74) and Mike Pittsley (trombone from 71). Mike is coming to Sacto for the Alumni Challenge and will play in the band. Kurt has agreed to help organize it (he's currently booked that night, but will get us going and if he can, he will play. Please have anyone who is interested in playing in a pep band at the game email Kurt Pearsall at bixstix@aol.com." For those of you who don't know Mike Pittsley 71, he lives and plays in San Antonio, Texas! I saw Mike play at the '99 Sacramento Jazz Jubilee: http://www.encinahighschool.com/pictures/1999/photos.htm This is another great opportunity for the alumni to get involved and have fun! I know we have a lot of alumni who are musically inclined and here's your chance to show your stuff. We also have the opportunity for alumni musicians to play during dinner (not too loud) and during the postgame wrapup. This will give non-band instrument musicians a chance. Note that this is not a dance and the music needs to be such that folks can chat. For those of you who have bands, we want alumni musicians! Please contact Kurt Pearsall at bixstix@aol.com and copy me at harlan@rambus.com ALUMNI BASKETBALL TEAM The alumni basketball team so far is: Bob Goosman 74 Chuck Armstrong 77 Kim Tierney 78 Chris Dahlberg 80 Henry Meier 80 Scott Simon 80 Jason Talanian 90 INTERESTING RSVPS Chris Moser 78 was a key member of the homecoming 2000 committee last year and provided many of the decorations, including the lighted Encina sign which appears on the tv news! Chris wrote: "I'm RSVP-ing to attend the alumni challenge. I will be sending my payment to Becky. Also, have Steve contact me if he needs any help. (I'll see what I can do!) I also have been wanting to tell you, that because of your website "monster" you created, quite a few of us girls that went to elementary school got together last November. We had such a WONDERFUL time together! And we know we owe it to you! We are hoping to use May 11th as an excuse to get together again! So, I would like to "challenge" our prior class mates from the class of '78 to come to the Alumni Challenge! Especially those that attended Dyer-Kelly elementary or Howe Ave Jr. High! We're looking forward to you ALL being there! If anyone has contact with any of these classmates, please tell them! (No second thoughts allowed! Just do it!)" Bill Farley 77 wrote: "I'll be there to support Chuckles. Also, I will donate an additional $5.00 for every point Chuck scores." Steve Palmer 74 wrote: "Bill and Class of '77, I like your $5/point idea. I'll match with $5 for every point Bob Goosmann scores." Steve Palmer 74 sent this to the class of 74: "Dear class of 74, Bill Farley, Class of 77 has offered to donate $5 per point that Chuck ('77) makes in the upcoming Alumni Challenge game. I told him I would match with $5 for each point Bob Goosmann makes (I figure it to be under 75 points). Well.... he wrote back that the class of 77 challenges us to $10 per point!! He's going to find 5 others to each kick in the extra $1 per point. What do you say, team. Are there 5 (or better yet, 10) class of 74 people out there with spirit!!!!!!!! Email ASAP if you can join me in matching the class of 77's energy and spirit. Steve 530-676-2775 Harlan, please add this to your update and consider this a challenge to ANY alum or class to support their player or the team. By the way, where's the class of '73?????" I don't know, where is the class of 73... FIRST ANNUAL ENCINA HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI CHALLENGE Momentum is building! The alumni band offers another opportunity for more alumni particpation and involvement. If you are coming, please rsvp to harlan@rambus.com . Please pay in advance, as we need a headcount for the caterer who is providing dinner. As an incentive to pay early, the cost is: $20 before May 1st $25 after May 1st In order to raise desperately needed funds for the school, the first ever “Encina Alumni Challenge” will be held the evening of Friday, May 11. Some of you have inquired about making donations. You can make donations by either check or PayPal. Please note that your contribution is a donation in the comment field. This is a fabulous opportunity to see the newly modernized Encina, have dinner with old classmates, make new friends and watch an entertaining basketball game between an alumni and students. I've created a webpage for the alumni challenge here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge01.htm I will maintain an up to date list of the RSVPs here. The goal is to have at least 200 paying participants! ALUMNI CHALLENGE RSVPS If you have RSVPed, please pay in advance and not at door. Note that the class of 74 is smoking the rest of the classes. I'm surprised to see no RSVPs from the 60s. It appears that the 70s has the most school spirit... We need your support to make this event a success and raise money for Encina and have fun at the same time. CHRISTINE KOJIMA Janet Russel Mason 79 is organizing a retirement party for Christine Kojima, who is retiring this year. Janet wrote: Hi, Harlan, we've set a date, Sat July 14th. I was looking at Ancil Hoffman park in Carmichael, but its totally first come first served, and as I don't want to sit in a lawn chair all day, I started looking for other options. Discovery Park (off I-5, where the American River and the Sacramento River meet) is reservable-there are two sites available for this date. One site can accommodate 100 people, and the other site can hold 200. I'm leaning toward the smaller one, unless this week's update nets a lot. The ammenities include: 4-6 large shaded tables large BBQ electricity, water, restrooms (better than the beach campground in Mazatlan!) volleyball standards and horseshoe pits. There is a $100 nonrefundable deposit that is required to reserve. there is also a $4 per vehicle parking fee. To date, I have received 19 RSVPs, so I don't think recouping that money will be hard at all. Is there something you can put into the update to let people know when and where, and that donations (MAX $5) toward the site would be helpful? I really need to reserve a site within the next week, or we may be out of luck, so the sooner people can RSVP, the better. Again, anyone interested should contact me. Thanks, Janet Please write Janet at ideasbydesign@home.com if you are interesting in helping or attending. Renee Welch Wojnowski 72 wrote: "I am sure you are aware that many of Christine's students no longer live in the area. Perhaps we could arrange to have an "online" party. By an online party I mean make use of a chatroom ( Teacher.Net has several rooms that are not ususally used nor are they high traffic) Just a thought. I have kept in contact with Christine since I graduated & she in one of the reasons I became a teacher. It was just a thought. Renee Welch Wojnowski "72" If you are interested in the online party Renee suggested, please contact Renee at Wojo2201@pnx.com so Renee can arrange a time with Christine. Great idea Renee! Alumni_in_contact: Terri Jurich, Julie E., Suzanne M., Donna McManus., WILLLIAM LEWIS 81 Occupation: Fulltime student Bio: In 83, Cary Yee and I started a software development/consulting business for the purposes of making a little extra money while we were in college. As it turns out, it quickly became a fulltime affair, and I finally dropped out of school in 86, after getting really, really sick. Once my health returned, I ran the business for the next eleven years, finally moving on to other things in 97. Managed to build up a fairly respectable client base (UPS in Atlanta, PG&E in SF, Fidelity Financial in Los Angeles), and still do some consulting on the side. In 93 I went back to school to finish up that elusive undergraduate degree. Got hooked on Linguistics while doing that, and decided after graduating in 96 to pursue Linguistics fulltime as a grad student. Closed up shop in 97, moved to Tucson, and have never looked back! I'm now dissertating, and hoping to finish by May of next year. My computer skills have served me well in this degree program, and am now doing a variety of web based and corpus linguistic analyses. Last fall I was offered a Visiting Scholar position at Stanford, which I gladly accepted. Temporarily living in Menlo Park (can you believe the housing prices in this part of the state?!) until the summer. Trivia: I broke my patella in February 97, just a few months before I was to move to Tucson. Most painful injury I have *ever* had in my life. Back to normal now, but it made the move interesting. Friends: Kris Christian (he's disappeared), Sean Hogan (intermittent contact), Jimmy Barsch, Debby Thompson (82, now Tellinghuisen), Wendy Wood (82, now Day), Gary Bishop (80). I see Jimmy and Debby pretty often now that I'm in CA again. Hobbies: Travel is my number one big hobby. Being self-employed for so many years gave me a lot of time to travel. And now that I'm a fulltime student, I have even more time to travel! Been all over the US and Europe (including long stints in Russia and Iceland, and visits to Estonia and Latvia), and have also travelled in Central America and Australia. Travel to Germany/Austria 1-2 times a year for conferences or skiing. Going to Costa Rica this summer for a month. (I should also say that I hike/backpack pretty often, bike, and also telemark ski whenever there's snow.) Kids: Small, furry, and complains a lot. Memorable_teachers: Joe Lawrence, La Verne Gonzales (although I didn't really get to know Verne until after Encina), Leslie Saladen Favorite_memory: Too embarassing to post on the web Story: Jim Barsch and Gary Bishop once tried to set themselves on fire with gasoline in Death Valley about 10 years ago. They also tried to blow-up Gary's truck, but were unsuccessful. Sometime in the mid-90s, Jeff Albright, Wes Schenken, Jimmy, Gary, Dirk Ruthrauff and I repeatedly jumped off 70 foot cliffs while thoroughly intoxicated. What were we thinking!! TENA WELLS 81 Occupation: State of California, Crime Victim Resolution Officer Bio: Came back to Sacramento after graduation in So. California. Was a home owner at 18. Threw some large parties while attending ARC. Worked in Pak'n'Save as a grocery clerk for almost 6 years and got to see familiar faces fairly often. Went to work for the state at the time of the Loma Prieta Earthquake, 1989. Got married. Got divorced. I've moved around to a few different departments and various positions. I worked as an investigator for three years and currently assist crime victims. I am also getting into real estate. My boyfriend and I have a great place near Cottage School (and they say you can't go home again). We are doing our best to build the 21st Century "blended family" and yearn for time to seek our essence. Trivia: I met my biological family in 1991. I now have a mom again, two older sisters and a brother; trippy, since I grew up an only child. It was great to find them. A fairly 'Oprahish' reunion and we are all close. I went to a family reunion on my grandmothers side and encountered 300 + people that I was somehow related to. Friends: Terie Dixon Hylton, Julie Driffill Short, Jill Polakoff, Stephanie Bush Patton, Kathy Galloway. Haven't seen Terie in years. Haven't seen Kathy in a long time. Hobbies: Travel, golf (I attended the Mercedes at Kapalua in 2000 and it was awesome). I love Maui and Montana. I also love watersports, working out and my home life. Kids: They are the best thing I ever did- Adam 16, handsome, smart, a jock. Funny and serious at the same time. Loves the ladies, fast cars and cash. Dylan 9, handsome, large blue eyes, sensitive, sharp. Likes basketball and computers. My thirfty child. He's great with money. Taylor 7, beautiful, bright, sweet and loving. Loves to sing and dance. She's very girlish. Grade_school: Cottage Junior_high: Jonas Salk Memorable_teachers: Mrs. Kojima, she listened and was genuinely interested. Favorite_memory: Going to parties with my friends. Junior year. Any football game we won, (or anything else we won at) Roland's back flips, open campus. Story: I missed out on graduation. My dad died in May of 80 and I had to move away. There were so many people I had gone to school at Cottage and Jonas Salk. I had really looked forward to graduating with everyone. Now I am looking forward to the reunion and hope to see lots of friendly old faces. OBITUARIES Will Lewis 81 wrote that the following alumni are deceased. HUMOR Michael Babayco 72 submitted this in response to Greg Roeszler 74's bio comment about raising teenage daughters... 8 SIMPLE RULES FOR DATING MY DAUGHTER by: W. Bruce Cameron Rule One: If you pull into my driveway and honk you'd better be delivering a package, because you're sure not picking anything up. Rule Two: You do not touch my daughter in front of me. You may glance at her, so long as you do not peer at anything below her neck. If you cannot keep your eyes or hands off my daughter's body, I will remove them. Rule Three: I am aware that it is considered fashionable for boys your age to wear their trousers so loosely that they appear to be falling off their hips. Please don't take this as an insult, but you and all of your friends are complete idiots. Still, I want to be fair and open minded about this issue, so I propose this compromise: You may come to the door with your underwear showing and your pants ten sizes too big, and I will object. However, in order to ensure that your clothes do not, in fact, come off during the course of your date with my daughter, I will take my electric nail gun and fasten your trousers securely in place to your waist. Rule Four: I'm sure you've been told that in today's world, sex without utilizing a "barrier method" of some kind will kill you. Let me elaborate: when it comes to sex, I am the barrier, and I will kill you. Rule Five: In order for us to get to know each other, we should talk about sports, politics, and other issues of the day. Please do not do this. The only information I require from you is an indication of when you expect to have my daughter safely back at my house, and the only word I need from you on this subject is "early." Rule Six: I have no doubt you are a popular fellow, with many opportunities to date other girls. This is fine with me as long as it is okay with my daughter. Otherwise, once you have gone out with my little girl, you will continue to date her until she is finished with you. If you make her cry, I will make you cry. Rule Seven: As you stand in my front hallway, waiting for my daughter to appear, and more than an hour goes by, do not sigh and fidget. If you want to be on time for the movie, you should not be dating. My daughter is putting on her makeup, a process that can take longer than painting the Golden Gate Bridge. Instead of just standing there, why don't you do something useful, like changing the oil in my car? Rule Eight: The following places are not appropriate for a date with my daughter: Places where there are beds, sofas, or anything softer than a wooden stool. Places where there are no parents, policemen, or nuns within eyesight. Places where there is darkness. Places where there is dancing, holding hands, or happiness. Places where the ambient temperature is warm enough to induce my daughter to wear shorts, tank tops, midriff T-shirts, or anything other than overalls, a sweater, and a goose down parka zipped up to her throat. Movies with a strong romance or sexual theme are to be avoided; movies which feature chain saws are okay. Hockey games are okay. Old folks homes are better. CALIFORNIA Some of you may not have seen this funny letter which has been circulating. "America has engaged in some finger wagging lately because California doesn't have enough electricity to meet its needs. The rest of the country (including George W. Bush who wants Californians to suffer through blackouts as justification for oil drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) seems to be just fine with letting Californians dangle in the breeze without enough power to meet their needs. They laugh at Californians' frivolity. Well, everybody. Here's how it really is: California ranks 48th in the nation in power consumed per person. We are just about the most energy efficient state in the union. California grows more than half the nation's fruit, nuts and vegetables. From now on, we're keeping them. We need something to eat when the power goes out. We grow 99 percent of the nation's almonds, artichokes, dates, figs, kiwifruit, olives, persimmons, pistachios, prunes, raisins and walnuts. Hope you won't miss them. California is the nation's number one dairy state. We're keeping our dairy products. We'll need plenty of fresh ones since our refrigerators can't be relied upon. Got milk? We Californians are gonna keep all our high-tech hardware and software in state. Silicon Valley is ours, after all. Without enough electricity, which you're apparently keeping for yourselves, we just plain don't have enough technology to spare. We're keeping all our high-tech aerospace stuff, too, like the sophisticated weapons systems that let you sleep at night, not worried you might wake up under the rule of some foreign kook. Oh, yeah, and if you want to make a long-distance call, remember where the satellite components and tracking systems come from. Maybe you could get back in the habit of writing letters. Want to see a movie this weekend? You'll have to come to California. We make them here. Since we'll now have to make them with our own electricity, we're keeping them. Even if we filmed them somewhere else, the labs, editing facilities, sound facilities and printing facilities are all here. How about a nice bottle of wine? We produce over 17 million gallons per year. We'll need all of it to drown our sorrows when we think about the fact that no matter how many California products we export to make the rest of America's lives better, America can't see its way clear to help us out with a little electricity. You complain that we don't build enough power plants to provide all the power we use. Well, you don't grow enough food to feed yourselves, build enough computers to run your businesses, write enough software to run your computers, make enough movies to entertain yourselves, or make enough wine to have a good party. This is your last warning, America. Lighten (us) up before it's too late." TECHNOLOGY The Danger of Self-Upgrading Appliances This is not a security story, nor even a computer risk story. This is a story of commercial rights. What would happen if you bought a fancy refrigerator that could make ice cubes, and then one day the manufacturer downloaded an upgrade which removed that functionality? You'd be pretty pissed. This is exactly the position in which users of ReplayTV have found themselves. The company upgraded the software on the digital video recorder removing a feature that at least one user liked. What's more, they replaced the feature - frame pause - with commercials. This issue is as ugly as it is serious since many software businesses are moving towards a subscription or rental model in which your software gets automatically paid for and upgraded on an ongoing basis. Read Bruce Tognazzini's account of his experience with ReplayTV and think carefully before you buy subscription-based services and goods. Incidentally, Bruce is a bigwig in the world of interface design and is going on a world seminar tour with Jakob Nielsen, Brenda Laurel, and Donald Norman. His site is well worth browsing for anyone into computer interface design.
