Date: Fri Mar 16, 2001 12:24 pm Subject: Encina Update (paypal/huber/61 senior ball/scandalis/reunions/headlines/homecoming/siblings/bios/obituaries/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, No sponsor this week... PAYPAL PayPal lets users send and receive money online. Someone suggested that I get a PayPal account to make it easier for alumni to make contributions towards the costs of running the Encina website. After reading several articles about PayPal, I decided to sign up. The service is free! Not only is it free, but they'll credit $5 to your account if you sign up and complete their requirements (show you have a checking account and add funds to your account). My account is linked to the Encina website checking account. In addition, if you sign up for your own PayPal account, they'll give me (the Encina webmaster) a $5 referral fee. Just put down harlan@rambus.com as the referring email address. Here is how to sign up for PayPal: "Dear Harlan Lau, Thank you for joining PayPal! To express our appreciation, we will add $5 to your account for everyone you refer to PayPal who completes the new account bonus requirements. Just forward the email below to all your friends and family. When they click on the link to sign up, you'll get $5 as soon as they earn their $5 new account bonus! **************************************************************** Did you know you can send money online with PayPal? PayPal lets users send and receive money online. Use PayPal to split restaurant tabs, collect club dues, pay friends for movie tickets, or buy an item at an online auction. PayPal charges the money to your credit card or bank account. It's faster, safer and easier than mailing a check. As soon as you sign up and complete the bonus requirements, PayPal will automatically add $5 to your balance! We're confident you'll want to use PayPal, but if not, you can transfer the money to your bank account at any time. No strings attached. Click on this link to sign up and see for yourself: https://secure.paypal.com/refer/pal=harlan%40rambus.com After signing up, you'll get an email like this to send to your friends and family. PayPal will give you $5 for each friend you refer who completes the bonus requirements. It's that easy! ---------------------------------------------- "Best of the Web" - Forbes "Using the service is actually safer than a check or money order." - Wall Street Journal "The beauty is that you can send money -- real money, not one of those gimmicky Internet currencies -- to anyone with an email address." - New York Times "PayPal can play a major role in your life. You can use it to pay for stuff at auction sites, settle dinner debts with friends or nudge your cousin to repay that $50 he borrowed at the family reunion." - Time "This is truly one of the easiest services to use. Setting up an e-mail account at Yahoo! takes longer!" - Internet.com" LOUIS HUBER Teacher Louis Huber wrote: "Hello Encina Alums, Sure would like to hear from some of the following students, Georgianna Wooley, Jeanne Arenson, Karla Grant, Leslie Wilson and many, many others between 1958 -1983. Yours truly, Louis G. Huber" You can write Louis Huber at HbrLouis@aol.com CLASS OF 61 SENIOR BALL Kathie Kloss 61 found this bit of nostalgia in the Bee archives... Sacramento Bee, June 1, 1961 Encina Senior Ball Will Be Saturday Scherazade, the first senior ball at Encina High School, will take place Saturday evening from 9 o'clock until midnight. The entrance to this affair will feature a wide gravel walkway leading to black and white tile steps in a checkerboard design. Above the ornate doors will be a canopy. Following an Arabian theme, multi-colored canopies in red and gold will be suspended over the band. Music will be provided by Red Farmer and his orchestra. The senior class will be attired in graduation robes for the Baccalaureate service Sunday at 8 PM in the boys' gym. The speakers will be Dr. E.G. Williams and the Revs. David MacMurdo and Michael Lynch. ALEXIS SCANDALIS 70 Alexis Scandalis Genung's "Vineyard Lane" (also known as "Coming Home") has been selected and is now displayed in the California State Capitol Building. This oil painting features two stately cypress trees flanking a sunlit path leading into the distance through a lush vineyard. It's a very, very spiritual piece, with a very Mediterranean flavor. For those who may be curious, it's oil on canvas, 24 by 24 inches. It's viewable from 7:30 am till 4 pm, M - F, till the end of this month, in the 6th floor cafe gallery. ALSO SHOWING at Koof's Cafe & Gallery, 38th & J Sts. (across from Starbuck's), in East Sacramento's "Fab Forties". REUNIONS If any of the classes have finalized more details, please let me know. I received the following note about the reunion guide page: http://www.encinahighschool.com/reunionguide.htm "My name is Jen Moore and I'm on my 10 year reunion committee. We found your reunion guide page through a search engine. What a wonderful site! It's helped our committee a bunch, I hope you don't mind that we've saved the page. It has been incredibly helpful to us while we're planning our reunion! Thanks for the tips! Jen~" I asked Jen which high school she was from and she wrote: "I attended Admiral King High School in Lorain, Ohio. Lorain, Ohio is located on the shores of Lake Erie, about 30 minutes west of Cleveland, Ohio. It's a smaller town, but we had about 250 people in our senior class. Nice talking to you! APRIL MILLIKEN 68 Occupation: Real Estate Investment Bio: Life sort of evolved and was full of surprises. Moved to San Francisco in 1976 after finally finishing college after eight years (couldn't stand being broke all the time). Started a very lucrative career in the advertising business in San Francisco; servicing the early high tech companies as an account executive. After five years and with my hair falling out from the stress, I married the Hong Kong rep of one of my clients. Spent four very interesting years in the orient and created the joy of my life, my son Ian. Not long afterwards, I was divorced and moved, for various reasons, to the south of France for a year and a half. With an adventurous spirit and no money, I had a very interesting time with my son who attended french public schools and basically taught me french as well. Returned to San Francisco in 1986 and struggled along as a single mom, like many of us, for several years, trying to be a stay at home mom and still pay the bills. It was the most innovative time of my life. I married briefly again in 1990, but it was short lived. Fortunately in 1991, I met the man who made the real difference in my life. It wasn't money (he didn't have much after his divorce), but just a partner who helped me have the confidence I needed to "get going". After 10 years together, and many moves (finally Santa Barbara in 1993), life is wonderful. Not that it wasn't always wonderful. However, personal success (whatever that is) is a wonderful thing. I've got a wonderful son whom I adore, a lovely, albeit modest, home in Santa Barbara (one of the most beautiful places in the world), an apartment I renovated myself in San Francisco, a little (very tiny) village house in the south of France, and a little studio in Paris. France is a very big part of my life and I spend as much time there as I can. I rent the properties I have in SF, Provence, and Paris short term and furnished to generate income and pay the bills. I continue to sell real estate, specializing in turn around properties, and can serve as a contractor on any properties I sell. I love that stuff. If I had it to do all over again, I'd be a carpenter. Seriously! I suppose I'll grow old with a map and a hammer in my hand. Life is great. I have been truly blessed. Trivia: Speak french fluently and actually do some real estate business there; something I couldn't have envisaged in 1968. Was lucky enough to travel to many parts of the world and live for a while in Europe and the Orient. And doubly lucky to have my base be Santa Barbara. I love it here and will never leave. I've not returned to Sacramento since our 25 year reunion. I no longer have family there. My brother, Tom, lives in Santa Barbara. My brother, John, lives in Westlake Village and commutes to LA as a Delta airline captain. And, my mother, at 78, is still raising Hell and living five minutes from me in Santa Barbara. Friends: Mary Lou McGrath and Mary Lou Klang. Also, Cindy Grossman and Sigrid Hjelle. Oh, and not to forget Stephanie Gough (who first taught me about pegged jeans) Mary Lou Klang was always there...my best buddy since day one. We shared everything in those days. Hobbies: Construction/renovation of properties. Sort of a contractor. Invest in my own properties and make them work for income. Still play piano, power walk, and drink a lot of wine. Kids: Ian Alexander Ronalds is 18. He is half Australian. His father was the Hong Kong connection I spoke of above. He is definitely a chip off the old block (if that's good???) and I adore him. He is graduating from Santa Barbara HS this year (2001). Grade_school: Howe Avenue Grade_school_friends: John Hart and Scott Lewis. John was always a sweetheart and a friend. Scott was the first boy who ever carried my books home from school. Oh, and Stephanie Gough. She was a pistol and a dear friend. The Mary Lou's (Mcgrath and Klang) came later in high school. Those were such great years, in retrospect. Junior_high: Howe Avenue Junior_high_friends: Same as above. Memorable_teachers: Mr.Gallagher, the coach. He was the best! I'm sure there are others, but my memory is getting cloudy at 50. Favorite_memory: Junior Prom...I was never a Queen again. Everyone should be a Queen once. Contrary to what many people may have thought, I never had a lot of confidence. Story: Mary Lou Klang's mom and Mary Lou McGrath's father. They were my adopted family during many turmoil years of my own family. I will never forget them. Sibling_info: John L. Milliken Jr. Class of '62 (brother) Tom Milliken (brother) Class of '63 Alumni_in_contact: Same as above Heard_about_website_from: Matt Bell SHANNON BICE 89 Occupation: Office Administrator - Contracting Firm Bio: Since graduation, I have lived the life of a 40 year old woman. I took a couple fo years off to goof off then enrolled in city college. I could not seem to find a niche for myself there, so I explored the option of just working and focusing on life in general. In September of 1992 I married the first time and left him only after 5 months. I tell ya, this man had "LOSER" written all over his forhead, but I just could not read it at the time. A few months later I met a gentleman and married him in September of 1994. This marriage lasted 4 1/2 years. He gave me a beautiful daughter named Sammie and is an exact replica of me. I am now getting married for the FINAL TIME (I know, some of you are saying yikes) - It just takes some of us a little longer to find the right person. I'll be getting married April 29th of this year and my new name will be Shannon Sandman (ha, ha). I will also be a military wife as well. I must say that this is the happiest I have ever been in my life. Anyways, more boring details - I graduated from college in 1999 with a BS degree in Criminal Justice (finally!). My fiance' and I moved to Colfax in October of 2000 and now live in the beautiful motherlode area with great views and a beautiful home to fill with family. I have worked for past few years for my father as an office administrator who is a contractor. He retires in about 5 years and I will be taking over the business. I never would imagine the I would be owning my own business. This is the niche I have been longing to find. Trivia: I once entered a babe contest at a brewery to become a "representative" for their new beer. I must say, I was the only girl there with an IQ and could put more than 5 words together to form a sentence. Come to find out, all the other girls who entered where all strippers! No, I didn't win, but this was the most embarrassing moment of my life for sure! Friends: Vanessa Williams (Habkrik), Robin Gentle (Shill, where are you?), Sanceree Pruitt (Thompson?), Aaron Tello (Hutchinson), Jeremy Peters, Gerry Huth, Mike Francis (I finally found you!) and and of course Glenn Fanning, Steve Smith, and many others. Hobbies: I love to spend time with my daughter Sammie as well as work out at the gym, snow skiing, camping, cooking and traveling as much as possible. Kids: My daughter Sammie is 6 years old and is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. She has a very old soul. I have no need for a dictionary nor an encyclopedia anymore, because she seems to know it all. I call her Miss "Matter-of-Fact". She goes to elementary school in Auburn where I work and is the happiest kid you have ever seen. She is an exact replica of me when I was little, my mom says GOD is getting me back... Grade_school: Quincy Elementary School - up in redneck country , not around here. Grade_school_friends: Did not attend grade school in Sacramento. Quincy Elementary School - up in redneck country , not around here. Memorable_teachers: My most memorable teacher was Mrs. Tak. She is an incredible woman who sparked my brain when I needed it. She made me think and think and think. I loved her teaching style, she was tough, but she always made sense. Favorite_memory: The famous football game our senior year at Galt High School, when most of the football team, cheerleaders and songleaders got food poisoning from the dinner meal they served us before the game. I remember Jeremy Peters and I being so sick...Remember? Oh yes, Jeremy having a little too much to drink on Halloween our senior year and having to get him out of the women's bathroom at Carl's Jr. I know you remember that one Jeremy! Story: When I went to the 10 year reunion, I did not know what to expect, like everyone else. I must say that every single person there looked fantastic and I very impressed with how well everyone is doing. Eddie - no, I am not a at- home-mother, I would drive myself nuts! But I give a lot of credit to those who can do it and maintain sanity. I admire those ladies the most! Alumni_in_contact: Vanessa Williams (Habkirk), Vanessa Richey (Nichols), Aaron Tello (Hutchinson). Heard_about_website_from: From the 10th reunion invitation. Comments: I love this website!
