Date: Thu Feb 15, 2001 1:24 pm Subject: Encina Update (weather/reunions/homecoming/siblings/bios/obituaries/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, This update is sponsored by Charles McBrian 87. A few weeks ago Charles Dow 87 told me that classmate Charles McBrian 87 was a software engineer at Macromedia. I contacted Charles this week about getting a discounted copy of Dreamweaver/Fireworks. Instead, Charles is sending me a NFR (not for resale) copy for FREE, saving the website about $400 or so over the retail price. Thank you Charles! WEATHER Gary Hastings 62 wrote this report from Sonora CA: "I'm sitting here looking out my window at a vast white landscape. My car is buried. My truck is visible as a two foot band of metal, snow below, snow on top, can't see the wheels. I have a good view of the central valley from my 4000 ft deck, but all I can see is white and beyond that clouds. My house is about ½ mile in from a paved road. I have a few neighbors but no one has gone in or out today. They plow the road I get up the hill on, but only on school days. We're stuck here for a while. Good thing I don't smoke anymore cause there's no way to run down to the store. I think our supplies will last a few more days. After that...well, I guess we eat the dogs. After that...well, what did the Donner Party do? The power went off for a while yesterday, but we're prepared for that. It a common occurrence up here. Just hope we don't run out of propane; that happened one year during a snow storm. That's our heat and hot water. We ran out of firewood this year before the end of winter. One year the main water lines froze solid and we were without water for weeks. The novelty of snow wears off fast. Even with the 4wd truck I may not be able to get out tomorrow morning and go to work. Well then, things are looking better already. A few days off from work would be OK. Wonder what the forecast is for next week?" while Randi Muller Kemper 62 wrote this report from Tucson AZ: " Boo Hoo! Are you cold? I am sitting here with the sun shining and the birds all singing. Perfect hiking weather. We had a day of snow last week but it melted as it hit the ground. Then the rest of the day it was lovely. I do get the heat in the summer but that's why we have a pool and air conditioning" REUNIONS CLASS OF 61 Date: August 11, 2001 Location: River Cruise on the Mathew McKinley in Old Sacramento Time: Boarding 6.30 Sailing: 7.00pm-10.00pm Contact: John Russell at john_carolrussell@yahoo.com CLASS OF 66 Date: Saturday, September 15, 2001 Location: ??? That marraige lasted 8 years, no kids. I was single for 8 years before marrying my current husband of 15 years. All my kids have 4 legs and fur. We live in Grass Valley, phone 530 268-2783, work 530 268-6931. My career choices have included work as a surgical nurse, legal assistant, health care administration postions with Blue Shield of CA and Vision Service Plan, and now as a project manger for Avaya, formerly the Enterprise Networks division of Lucent Technologies. Lucent spun us off in Oct 2000. Trivia: I decided to leave the rat race in the mid 80's. My husband and I sold our home, quite our jobs, and bought an 18 wheeler. We became long haul truckers traveling all over the US and Canada. Considering I'd never driven a car with a manual transmission, this was quite an undertaking. But, I did learn to drive it. It's a very intersting business and can be quite profitable if you treat it like a business. It came to an abrupt end when we were hit head on by a pick-up that crossed the center line on Highway 54 in New Mexico. It completely destroyed our truck and 2 of the 3 people in the pick-up died at the scene. By the time we got through the insurance mess, we had to go back to the rat race and take normal jobs again. I don't regret the experience, but I wouldn't do it again. Friends: My best friend was and still is Diane Albert, now living in Truckee with her husband and two kids. I've lost touch with everyone else. Hobbies: I wouldn't call it a hobby because there is too much work to it, but we raise beef cattle. We currently run 70 momma cows and 3 bulls on a ranch in a little town called Honcut. We should start calving by the end of February so things will get even busier around here. Grade_school: Grade school was in Kingsport, Tennessee. Junior_high: Valle Vista Junior_high_friends: Sherry Burns, Bill Souza Memorable_teachers: Mr. Pattucci - he always thought I had potential even though I was lousy at Art. Mr. Wilde - he made Drama class so much fun, and he taught me a lot about self confidence. Mr. Psiahas - I loved hearing him speak french, even though I didn't have a clue what he was saying. We used to have pot luck lunches after our 4th period class. Mrs. Sandy Hunt - she had a way of provoking you to think about important, real-life issues. Favorite_memory: Getting busted down at the river with Jim Otterson, Eric Foth, Sheila McComb and another guy that had just transferred to Encina. Eric got away, the rest of us went to juvenile hall! My mom threatened to send me back to my dad in Tennessee, but settled on grounding me for the rest of the year. She didn't let me off early either! Story: I have a great story about Brad Foulk in my closet with his girlfriend, Joy (can't remember her last name). I'll save the details for the reunion. SAM PERRIGO 79 Occupation: Restaurateur Bio: While I didn't graduate with my class, I still have many friends from Encina I would love to see again. I took a lot of time off to travel, relocated to New York, and since relocated to Paris. Now I live between LA, New York and Paris. I went into the special events business, which led me to catering, and opened my own restaurant in Los Angeles. My current restaurant has been open for three years (Bouchon Bistro, located on Melrose). I do some of the menu planning, and bake some desserts. I love the restaurant business, and I spend a lot of time traveling and discovering new restaurants and foods. I still love my life in Paris, where I bought an apartment some time ago. Trivia: My sister, Susan (Class of '81), and I own a restaurant in Hollywood together. She has become one of my best friends in adulthood, and an excellent business partner. She has three kids, and she lives in Los Angeles, also. Friends: Billy Smith, Gary Walker, Tina Howell Hobbies: I own a few quarter horses in Los Angeles, and I compete in the hunter/jumper circuit in the West Coast States. Kids: I have no children, unless I count my sister Susan's kids. She has three children, and we all travel together in the summer. Her children also compete in the quarter horse circuit with me in the Western United States. Junior_high: Jonas Salk Junior High School Junior_high_friends: Tina Howell Memorable_teachers: Mr. Brodnansky ("Mr. B.") taught me much about animals and agriculture in his Large Animal Science, Animal Husbandry and Agriculture Classes. Favorite_memory: I loved when we had bands out on "the quad" at lunchtime. Story: Going to school on Halloween in full drag with Billy Smith. None of the students or teachers recognized me. It was a lot of fun during role call that day.
