Date: Fri Feb 9, 2001 11:15 am Subject: Encina Update (sponsors/mailing lists/greg stahl/reunions/homecoming/knoff/siblings/search/bios/juno/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, This update is sponsored by Brett Stover 76. SPONSORS Some of you have writen asking what sponsorship entails. The Encina website is free but does have expenses such as domain registration, buying yearbooks, memberships for alumni websites like classmates.com, postage, web software, computer hardware, etc. We are so far fortunate to have our domain hosted for free at Connect Corp, an ISP started by alumni Will Leaver 73/74. This would otherwise cost $25-50/month for the 200mb of disk space we currently consume. It's not clear to me what the future holds in this respect as Will is no longer involved with Connect Corp, which is being run by his sons. So far they have grandfathered us. But recently they shifted domain hosting to a different company and I worry that we may have to pay for hosting in the future. But so long as our hosting is free the website expenses themselves are not bad. The MAJOR expenses incurred are putting on the annual homecoming party. In order to avoid charging admission, the homecoming 2000 party was funded by the generous donations and contributions of alumni and staff. And by the donations of time and goods by the homecoming reunion committee last fall! Sponsors are those who have contributed money towards the expenses of the website and homecoming party. Past contributions have ranged from $20 to $250 and all contributions are welcome. If you deem the website and homecoming party worthy of your support I would be pleased to accept any contribution you chose to make! MAILING LISTS Another reminder for those of you who post or reply to your class mailing lists. Please sign your message with your full name! I constantly see unsigned messages where I'm sure the classmates have no idea who the author was. And if you went by a different name (maiden name), it's helpful to sign the name you went by at Encina. SIGN YOUR NAME! GREG STAHL 74 More sad news for the class of 74 this week... Donna Moana Prater Tedrow 73 wrote: "Harlan - it is with extreme and profound sadness that I want to share that Greg Stahl (74') passed away this past Sunday (2/4/01) from cancer. He married a close friend of mine in the 1980s and he too because a close friend of both my husband and I. He was a sweet and all around great person as well as a wonderful husband, father and friend. He leaves behind his wife Velma, daughter Leigha, son Brenden as well as his parents and many siblings. I do not know if his services are private so I will decline to share the details of his services until I know. If anyone wishes to share their thoughts and memories of Greg with me, I will be happy to forward them onto his family." Not to take anything away from Barbara herself, but she is married to the famous nature photographer Galen Rowell. We have several of his books, including one signed at the Monterey Aquarium. In fact, I wrote Barbara that my wife's nephew is named after Galen Rowell... BARBARA CUSHMAN 66 homepage: www.mountainlight.com Occupation: Photographer, writer, pilot & photographic stock agency & gallery owner Bio: Although I went to school with Encina grads from 7th grade on, I transferred to Mira Loma in the middle of my junior year. After graduation, I married a teach at Mira Loma. We divorced after seven years. Meanwhile, I attended American River, Sac State, and graduated from UC Davis in 1978 with a major in textiles and minor in business. After working several years in clothing design, I joined The North Face to direct their public relations department and oversee their product catalog. My work took me to Nepal, Thailand, Japan, and Australia. I met my husband, Galen Rowell, in 1981 while he was working for the National Geographic. We joined forces and opened a business in the Bay Area to support the licensing of his photographs and the publication of his many books. I became a pilot in pursuit of my own passion, knowing it would also provide an aerial platform for my husband's photography. Galen trained me to become a photographer in my own right. Our assignments have taken us all over the world to places with wild animals or wild landscapes. some of my favorite trips include visiting Emperor penguins in Antarctica, trekking in Tibet, taking a nuclear power Russiona ice breaker to the North Pole, doing a National Geographic story on the highest war in Pakistan, visiting and teaching photography in the Galapagos and flying my single engine plane through out South America. Many of these places we've returned many times. --Currently we are in the process of opening a second gallery in Bishop, California. We will continue to keep our gallery and stock agency in Emeryville. I use our plane to commute between the two. I am contracted to write my own book about my flight adventures, and that is tentatively scheduled for release in 2002. It was Love at first sight...What a feeling! I need her probably much more than she needs me. She was very courageous to marry me with my two children. I started a construction company in 1984-1987 "Old World Builders" with two friends. It was a great learning experience. Received best builder award in 1986 from BIA. I went on to learn more about corporate building from National Homebuilders: Currently, work in Gold River for US Home. Looking forward to doing something else with my life real soon! They say you have three-five different jobs during a life time. Can't wait until my next experience. Trivia: I was married once before at 25 and married for the wrong reasons. AFter 5 years and two children I decided to learn more about me and what I needed in life to be happy. My wife, Maureen and I both went back to school at 34 to the University of San Francisco (USF)and received our BS in Organizational Behavior and I rediscovered my old religion (Catholic)thanks to my wife Maureen. We always are laughing about stupid things. That is what I like to do...laugh a lot about nothing. Hobbies: My hobbies are watching my children play and being a family. Keeping it simple pays big dividends for me while living one day at a time. I am extrememly predictable but I must like it that way. I love reading about politics and learning about different cultures. I very much enjoy Basketball and playing at the local clubs. I love golf but can't score below 90. I love to snow and water ski when I get the chance. I would like to travel more but one day Kids: I have 4 chldren: Austin 12, Peyton 10, Alec 2+, Claire 1. Ha Ha Story: Since Chris Yoder shared the Encina home page with me here's a story. While trying to earn some money while going to school my dad told me to get a job. I went to work at the Sacramento Inn as a bus-boy. I was making $2.35/hr +tips and I thought,"yeah, I'm making money". I made $16.00 in tips one Saturday night and Chris Yoder was working at My Yogurt Place for the same wage but no tips. Once I shared with him this "tip" thing, he wanted a job. I got him a job and soon we thought we were in tall cotton...Tips! DANNY GUTIERREZ 93 Occupation: Manager of Production and Quality Control - Java City Bio: I would have graduated from Encina, but life has many unexpected turns. In the middle of my Junior year, I decided to move with my father to Denver, Co. (My fathers job required it) I had nothing to loose, and wanted to see a little more than just Sacramento. So off I went wearing my dog collar, nose rings and green hair... I realy cared for Denver and barely graduated high school. (Not Suprised?) On the other hand, my passion for music was still my ultimate love. I was in a band called TURN KEY that ended in a West Coast tour right before moving back to Sacramento, to live with my girlfriend, at the time, Andrea Gueyger, in 1993. Shortly after returning to Sac, I landed a job with Java City (thanks to Analisa Co.) makeing Espresso drinks. I am now going on my 8th year with the company running the Production Department at the corporate offices. I found the woman that I had always been looking for and we were married on September 30th, 2000. My wife Yolanda and I now live in the River Park Community and have no kids yet. We will be moving into our new home at the end of May 2001. I am still heavly envolved with music and working with my latest project, EXHALE. Yolanda and I have decided to wait on starting our family due to our involvement with our life passions. We both feel strongly about adoption and will adopt when the time is right for us. Trivia: I travled to Thailand, Japan, Jamaica, and all over the United States. Several US tours with previous bands I was in. Still addicted to tattoos. Friends: Marty Smith, Hugo Martinez, Jason Brown, Larry Perrigo, Kim Smith, Grant Benton, Lou Lago, Sherry Cooper..... Grade_school: Dyer Kelly. I was a Dragon. Grade_school_friends: Chris Stone, Samantha Brown, Jimmy Fox. Junior_high: Arcade Fundamental / Jonas Salk Junior_high_friends: J Brown, Hugo Martinez, Marty Smith, Sherry Cooper.... Memorable_teachers: CINDY MITCHELL: Mrs. Mithcell was my Sophomore History teacher. She Was one of the most positive people I interacted with at that time. She really made a difference in my high school years... Mrs. SHORES Favorite_memory: Well this is not a favorite memory, but one that has been haunting me from time to time. I had alot of anger, hostility, and hate the first few years of high school. I wish I could appologise for being such an ass to most of you. Most of you I mistreated I never even met, but I appologise just the same. I hope that if you might see me and remember me in passing, too take a munite and say hi........ Sibling_info: Sandra Gutierrez 87? Alicia Gutierrez 83? JUNO For you Juno users out there, from the Langalist newsletter... Juno to Users: TANSTAAFL TANSTAAFL is the acronym for "There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch;" it was first popularized by author Robert A. Heinlein, many years ago. Of course, it refers to the fact that things that appear free usually have a hidden cost, and we've discussed the TANSTAAFL principle twice before in these pages. (See http://search.atomz.com/search/?sp-q=TANSTAAFL&sp-a=0008002a-sp00000000 ) And it's back now, big time. Reader Theo Tanalski, who is a user of the Juno ISP service, noticed something ominous in a recent change in the terms of service. Although Juno is the first, I can easily believe other ISPs will try the same thing soon. In fact, I'm amazed that AOL hasn't announced something similar yet. Theo sent along this clip extracted from Juno's latest service agreement dated 1/18/2001: 2.5. You expressly permit and authorize Juno to (i) download to your computer one or more pieces of software (the "Computational Software") designed to perform computations, which may be unrelated to the operation of the Service, on behalf of Juno (or on behalf of such third parties as may be authorized by Juno, subject to the Privacy Statement), (ii) run the Computational Software on your computer to perform and store the results of such computations, and (iii) upload such results to Juno's central computers during a subsequent connection, whether initiated by you in the course of using the Service or by the Computational Software as further described below. In connection with downloading and running the Computational Software, Juno may require you to leave your computer turned on at all times, and may replace the "screen saver" software that runs on your computer while the computer is turned on but you are not using it. There's lots more, but the above encapsulates the amazing part: In effect, Juno is saying that you must give them the right to use your PC for whatever purposes they choose, when they choose. You see, Juno wants to lash up its subscribers' computers into an ad- hoc distributed computing network and sell the aggregate computing power to others. Someone with a large computational problem will contract with Juno, which will divvy up the large problem into smaller chunks and force-feed it into its subscribers' PCs. Those Juno-laden PCs, which must be left on and running, will execute this external code and send the results of the computations back to Juno. The process then repeats. This kind of distributed computing is a very powerful thing, and has been used for good purposes among businesses (which have the right to run whatever they want on their own PCs) and among volunteer operations, such as SETI@home. But I believe this is the first attempt by an ISP to grab a piece of its subscribers' PCs in such a blatant manner. This isn't just stealing a little bandwidth to cram some ads down the wire at you--- this is taking over your PC at a fundamental level. And that might lead you to wonder, "What happens if Juno's software trashes my system?" That's spelled out in the rest of the amended terms of service: The subscribers must perform these forced services at their own risk and expense: You pay for the power consumed to run Juno's calculations; you pay for the call (if needed) to send in the results; and if Juno's software crashes your PC and eats your data, well, tough luck. Juno calls this the "Virtual Supercomputer Project," and describes it in glowing PR-speak at http://www.juno.com/corp/news/supercomputer.html . So: not only TANSTAAFL but TANSTAAFISP--- there ain't no such things as a free ISP. Juno users will have to weigh the cost of the force- fed ads, plus the cost and risks of running unknown software on their PC--- software of unknown quality, by unknown parties for unknown purposes--- against the benefit of saving a few bucks a month. Sometimes "free" lunches turn out to be very expensive.
