CLASS OF 81 20 year reunion August 11, 2001 at Arden Hills Country Club CLASS OF 82 To the class of 1982, Our 20 year reunion is coming upon us faster than we know it. We didn't have a 15 year reunion and I don't want to see that happen on our 20 year. I have called the school and as of today no one has called or started a committee for a reunion. So, if anyone knows who was in the committee for the 10 year maybe they can be contacted about our 20 year. If we don't have a committee then we need to start one and start making some contacts. I know we are all busy but I REALLY think we will regret it if we get lazy and miss this PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So come on and lets get something going so we can all share our stories of the past, present and what we our going to do in the future. Early on as a musician, until I discovered the concept of regular meals. After that, I worked primarily as an audio engineer. I now have a real job working in the public sector (quasi-government), and have been doing so for about 10 years. I continue to live in Sacramento. I have two great sons, far to many ex-wives, my health, and no complaints. Drop me a line if my actions as a teenager didn't offend you for life. If they did...I SINCERELY APOLOGIZE. I was a testosterone driven punk who wanted to be a rock star. Eventually these ideals were replaced by the cold harsh reality of living in a band house where "Cup-O-Noodles" is considered a food group. Trivia: From a caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly. I have transformed myself from a high-strung, left wing, hyperactive teen. To a high strung, right wing, hyperactive middle-aged man. It was like magic...he could pour a cup of coffee from his thermos, see who was late for class, and never (I mean never)did he once look up from his newspaper. Mr. Wilde - Drama. Because no matter how gruff he acted...we always new it was a show. Favorite_memory: Mr. Sears talking to me like a real person when he realized that I had actually cut P.E. for the whole semester, and spent the time in the library watching the "Watergate Hearings". The latter explains how I made it for so long without getting caught. I imagine the note sent back on my grade report from coach Schwartz was something like...Tom Who? He (Mr. Sears)was actually very cool...I thought he was going to skin me alive. Story: The look on Mr. Sears face when Paul Bean lit his coat pocket on fire with a cigarette. He just kept on chatting with us as the smoke billowed out of Paul's lambs wool lined pocket. I think he was so busy trying not to laugh that he just sent us on to class. I can only imagine how many times he must have told that story to his buddies. From the Desk of David Pogue: The User-Antagonistic Computer ====================================================== I'll never forget the moment I opened up my first computer: the very first Macintosh in 1985. I was a senior in college and had never used a computer before. So I took the thing out of its beautiful, Picasso-influenced box, set it up on my desk and began to read the instructions. One of the very first pages stopped me cold. In effect, it said "You can't do anything with your new computer until you install some applications." Applications? Nobody had said anything about buying whatever that was. I put the manual down and began to rummage through the packing materials, looking for this "application" thing I was supposed to install. Needless to say, I came up empty-handed, and the poor little Macintosh spent the night sitting on the desk looking beige. The next day I managed to track down a computer guru who provided me with enough pirated software -- applications at last! -- to get me started. But I couldn't help wonder: Who would manufacture a machine like this without doing a better job of explaining how to use it? Fifteen years later, there's still no decent answer that question -- a point that was brought home to me yesterday when a fairly close family member called for help. She had managed to render her computer almost useless by moving files in and out of their operating-system folders, clicking random buttons in her control panels and arbitrarily trashing important system files. She wondered if I wouldn't mind taking a moment to help restore her computer to the point where it could get onto the Internet, synchronize with her Palm and once again send faxes. I've read Miss Manners and I've read Emily Post, but I've never heard of anyone in a less comfortable etiquette dilemma than this one. I knew that it would take me literally hours to talk her out of this mess. (Shoot, if I had that kind of time, I'd spend it hunting down the annoying little quirks of my own machines.) And don't even get me started on the difficulty of trying to "talk someone down" over the telephone. As any tech support person can tell you, trying to communicate with a novice without being able to see what's on his or her screen is about as much fun as threading a needle blindfolded. But what was I supposed to tell her? I knew fully well that she had very few options. As computers and their software get more complex, the sources of expert help have become fewer and fewer. Some computer companies offer free tech support, but only for Microsoft Windows. Apple -- the maker of my family member's computer -- charges $50 per call. Consultants cost hundreds of dollars per visit. Most free-help Web sites, such as nowonder.com, have either disappeared or turned into profit-making corporate enterprises. And software manuals, of course, have mostly disappeared. These days, software companies usually give us only online help, which is usually terse, free of illustrations or humor and impossible to read in bed or on the subway. And so with my eyes closed tight, knowing that I would regret it, I began to walk my family member through the process of rebuilding her system software. As I waited for her to execute steps, I couldn't help thinking about how crude and unreliable these computers are today, about how they're just in their infancy. Here's hoping that someday, computers will be as idiot-proof as the TV or electric toothbrush. I long for the day when I can tell my grandchildren, "Why, when I was your age, our computers used to crash a couple of times a day…" TELLME If you haven't tried out TELLME, you're missing out on a very cool, free service. Forget trying to browse the internet on your cellphone or PDA. TELLME provides most of this information via the 800 number 800-555-TELL. They use voice recognition so there are no buttons to push while you're trying to listen at the same time. You say "quotes...rambus" to get a stock quote, or sports to get scores, directions to get directions, weather to get weather. Other services they provide are restaurants, movies, news, traffic... For a limited time, you can make FREE 2 minute long distance phone calls within the US! See the tellme.com website for more information. Granted, voice isn't appropriate for some types of information but for many things, TELLME works way better than a browser on your phone. It's FREE and you can access it from normal desk phones as well as cell phones. This is one of those cool services where I don't see how they make any money. According to Forbes, they've raised an incredible amount of venture capital so we'll see. Give it a try and let me know what you think. The only thing I wish it could do is read you your email over the phone. But there are other services which provide this already.
