BOB OPP 71 (This is a current obituary, as opposed to an old one) Several folks wrote me about Bob Opp's obituary in the Bee. Kathie Kloss 67 sent me the article which follows... Sacramento Bee, Dec. 23, 2000 BOB OPP LOVED TO HELP OTHERS THROUGH HIS CARPENTRY by Steve Gibson, Bee Staff Writer Until the end, 47-year-old carpenter Bob Opp was thinking about the volunteer work that formed the core of his life. He helped build homes for Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit group that supplies housing for the disadvantaged. He died of a heart attack Dec. 15, one day before he was to lead a group of volunteers to frame a house in North Sacramento. In a hospital emergency room the previous day, suffering from chest pains, Mr.. Opp had phoned Habitat for Humanity, apologizing because he would be unable to work on Saturday, friends said. Instead, friends gathered at the work site that Saturday and held an impromptu memorial service. "Bob has just been the ultimate volunteer for us," said Archie Mulligan, regional director of Habitat for Humanity. "That's why we're all so shaken." In October, in recognition of his contributions, Mr.. Opp received the Cornerstone Award, the highest honor given to Habitat for Humanity volunteers. Robert Paul John Opp, whom everybody called "Bob," was born and raised in Sacramento. His mother, Leila Opp, was an architectural designer, and his father, Paul Opp, was a contractor who once served as president of the Building Industry Association here. As a child, Mr. Opp learned the carpentry skills that led to a career in the building trades. Working with his father, he helped build homes in the River Park and Sierra Oaks neighborhoods. He was a 1971 graduate of Encina High School. "His home was decorated with tools and books about building," said his daughter, Ann Wilber. "He could eye a roof and tell you if it was angled correctly. After scribbling a few computations on a scrap piece of wood, he could tell you what to cut and where to put it." Mr. Opp began working with Habitat for Humanity less than two years ago, at first doing consulting on putting up houses for the nonprofit group, his daughter said. "Soon he was pouring concrete, helping frame and ... getting all of his friends and family to come help, too," his daughter said. He is survived by two children -- Paul Opp of Fair Oaks and Ann Wilber of Sacramento -- from his marriage to Carol Balestreri of Sacramento. The couple was divorced. Also surviving are sisters, Marilyn Opp Evers of Shingletown and Kathleen Opp Shaw of Eureka, SD. Services are scheduled for 11 AM today in Florin United Methodist Church, 7560 Florin Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Habitat for Humanity, 3227 Second Ave., Sacramento, 95817 (916) 456-9543. NOTE: Did Carol Balestreri, Marilyn Opp or Kathleen Opp attend Encina? Eric Mandell 71 wrote: "Sadly, one of the pitfalls of getting older is losing your peers to illness, etc. Attached is the 12/23/00 obituary for Bob Opp, class of '71 who died of an apparent heart attack this past week. I was on the track team with Bob during our freshman year and remained friends with him through high school. Alhtough I lost touch with him in later years and only saw him at reunions, I remember him very fondly. He will be missed by many others as well, especially the folks at Habitat for Humanity." BIOS SHELLY REYNOLDS HENLEY 74 Occupation: Elementary School librarian/music/drama teacher Bio: Married twice, last time to Tom Henley, '70, who died November '99 of a heart attack. Hate being married - won't do it again. Two children, Brett, 19 and Maren, 17. Great kids - love 'em to death. Brett graduated from El Camino last year, Maren this year. Have worked at Mission Avenue Open School for many years as librarian and director of school-wide musicals for past eight years. Wonderful place to work - lots of opportunities to develop performing arts programs for children, which is my passion. LAst year, we put on a Shakespeare Festival/Renaissance Fair, and 200+ children performed/crewed in 7 Shakepeare plays, including that Scottish play. I direct a choir called 'The Mid-Life Chorus', composed of parents, faculty, and alumni of Mission. We drink wine, and sometimes we sing. I also teach piano, acting, reader's theater. I co-founded a children's outdoor summer theater program seven years ago called Lacy Lane Summer Theater, so I get to goof off creatively with kids all summer, too! Finally, I am Marketing Director for the Camellia Symphony Orchestra, which is child-free, so it's no fun at all. I have to give Jack Carey (Encina music teacher) credit for turning me on to teaching performing arts. Trivia: It's too trivial to mention... Friends: Kevin Crain was my best friend for many years. We stayed in close contact for a long time, and still do the birthday and Christmas card thing. Haven't seen him since 20th reunion. Others I've lost contact with, but would love to find out about: Robb Mainer, '73, Sue Nicol, '73, Richard Dewsnup, '74, Roger Bolton, '74, Tom Carter, '75, Jennie Scott, '72. Still miss Lynne Vasquez('73, deceased), and think about her so often. Oh yes, and there's also S.O. - he was my "first" (I can still hear 'Woodstock' playing in the background...).OHMYGAWD, that was 28 years ago!!!! Back to reality...I see Judy Flint Crackel, '73, and Alyse (Maiden Name?) DeFazio, '70 at Mission Avenue Open School. Bette Henley , '74, Patricia Henley, '72, Bill Henley, '60-something?, and Kathey Henley Hale, 60-something?, are my sisters- and brother-in-law (Tom's sibs). Hobbies: I spend ALL my money on books. The fact is, I'm a major introvert, in spite of my work with performing arts. I'm quite dull to most people because I spend so much time in my head. Kids: What can I say? They aren't pregnant, on heroin, or cruel to animals. Life is good. Grade_school: Oakland - too far away to be of interest. Memorable_teachers: Jack Carey; see above. Favorite_memory: Madrigal tours. On again/off again relationship with Robb Mainer. Senior trip to coast with Kevin, Richard, Roger. Story: Just an addendum about Tom Henley: Tom was one of those guys who felt like a geek in High School. When it came time for 1970's 20th class reunion, he worked on the reunion committee and really had fun re-establishing ties from his H.S. days. I know it meant a lot to him to have had the chance to talk to so many of his former classmates, and feel like an 'equal' without those old High School insecurities. So thanks to all of you from Class of '70 who gave Tom a chance to feel, just for a little bit, like a B.M.O.C. It was a shining moment for him. Alumni_in_contact: Judy Flint Crackel; Alyce DeFazio; Carol Elam Rucker JANET POWELL 75 Occupation: Assistant Professor, Sam Houston State University, College of Criminal Justice, Huntsville, TX Bio: I left Sacramento for Alaska in 1981 to work for Sohio Oil Company in Prudhoe Bay. That was an interesting experience, to say the least! Met my husband, Ed, there and moved back to the Bay Area. Three children later (and relocations to Baltimore, Pleasanton, and Laguna Niguel) we landed in Houston Texas where I completed my PhD in Criminal Justice (1997). I'm now an Assistant Professor in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas and lovin' it. My research takes me into the numerous prisons scattered through out TX where I examine the long-term effects of childhood maltreatment on inmates, among other topics. Friends: Friends: Linda Starnes, Cindy Sarmento, Marcelle Pratt, Mindy Dunnigan. I'm happy to say that I am still in touch with these good friends, even after all these years!! Kids: Three great kids (16, 14, 13 yrs) Grade_school_friends: Seems like I went to High School with all of the same kids from Greer School (grade school)!!!!!!! Memorable_teachers: Mr. Wilde was absolutely fantastic and way ahead of his time!!! He gave me the courage and self-confidence to realize I could do anything I put my mind to. He and his late wife, Neva, attended our wedding in Pleasanton, CA in 1983 and send us Christmas cards every year! Favorite_memory: Playing Anne Sullivan in "The Miracle Worker". Sibling_info: Barbara J. Powell (Murphy) and Dian F. Powell (Koelzer) Alumni_in_contact: Cindy Sarmento, Linda Starnes, Marcelle Pratt KATE DEL RIO 90 Occupation: Money Markets Trader Bio: I'll try to be as brief as possible, I don't want to bore you to death. After High School I returned to Spain and went to university in Madrid to study Economics. That was a five year degree, I spent the fifth year in France with a student's exchange program. I graduated in 1995 and started to work in Madrid for a small auditing firm, but I missed my student life and didn't like accounting so much, so I went on to get a Postgraduate degree at the London School of Economics in the UK. That was a great year, both from an academic and social perspective. I learnt a lot about myself, people and of course, Economic Development. In 1997 I moved back to Madrid and got a job in an American consulting firm, but again I felt something was missing, the job was too tedious and unchallenging, so I quit. In May 1999 I found a job in an investment bank, so I moved to London and this is where I have been living since. London is a very multicultural city, fun and interesting, but rainy and gloomy, I guess you can't have everything. As you can see, I have remained quite international, although Spain still is my favourite place to live, and I hope to return there some day. By the way, I am not married and have no kids either, and neither is my sister, it must be a family thing!!! Just to let you know, my name is not really Kate, but Catalina. I changed it when I moved to California for some silly adolescent complex, but I'm known as Catalina or Cat to everyone. Trivia: I was student's representative at the university council and member of a "left wing" student union, Pat I'm sure you'll love this one. Tanya came to stay with me in Madrid, it was great having her, I felt bad it was during exams time and didn't have much time to show her around. However, I still have pictures from a Mexican party we held at my place during her stay, it was brilliant!!! Friends: Tessie Velasco and Maria Dogias were my closest friends, but there are a lot of other people I remember having great times with, like Kevin Jackson who was my date for both Junior Prom and Senior Ball. Hobbies: Films, reading (Tanya I hope you get into it again, it's one of the few mind developers I know), skiing and going out with friends. Kids: No kids, for now. Grade_school: Spain Junior_high: Spain Memorable_teachers: Mr. Tracy, I loved his psychology class, I still use his relaxation technique when I can't sleep at night. Also, Mr. Derderian which whom I used to talk about world politics. Favorite_memory: The rallies, the first time I went to one I thought "this people are completely out of their minds", but it was a blast. HUMOR Check out the Adcritic website at www.adcritic.com This is an amazing website with both real and spoof commercials/trailers/etc. The top 100 list is here: http://www.adcritic.com/topten/top100.php I recommend Clinton's Final Days: http://www.adcritic.com/content/president-clinton-final-days.html starring the president himself. There is a lot of really funny material here. Highly recommended. Best if you have a high speed internet connection due to videos.
