Note that sponsors are those who have made contributions to support the website and/or homecoming party. The big homecoming and reunion weekend has come and gone! Last Friday was the Homecoming 2000 party at El Camino HS. Saturday was the class reunion for the classes of 70 and 90. I think it worked out well to have the class reunions on the same weekend, as many who came from out of town were able to attend both their class reunion and the homecoming party. I hope that reunion committees next year will consider scheduling their reunion on the same weekend as the homecoming party! I'm trying to see who was actually at the homecoming party. If you rsvped but were not able to attend, please let me know. Likewise, if you saw folks who did not rsvp at the party, write me. Thanks! THANKS Many thanks to those who contributed almost $400 at the homecoming party! I made a note of those who contributed directly to me and will credit them as sponsors in future updates. But many of you made anonymous contributions to the informal "donation" box on the nametag table. If you contributed anonymously but would like to be recognized, write and tell me how much you contributed. Thanks for your support! And special thanks to those on the homecoming party reunion committee, who made the homecoming party a success! But many others helped out during the course of the evening and your help was greatly appreciated! We sure have a great bunch of alumni! HOMECOMING RALLY I was up late Thursday night printing out nametags and getting ready for the party. I was still getting rsvps around midnight! Friday was a long day for me. I dropped off my two sons at school about 8am in Mountain View and headed for Sacramento, praying that the miserable Bay Area traffic would let me get there on time. The first thing I did in the car was call Myra Salazar, who is in charge of facilities usage for San Juan. You may find this hard to believe (and scary), but until I talked with Myra Friday morning, I was not sure that we had fulfilled the district's insurance requirements for the party. I won't go into all the reasons why it took so long to provide the district with the insurance documents, but needless to say, this was a great source of stress for me last week. As I told the reunion committee members, if the insurance fell through I was going to change my name and move to a different planet... So it was with great relief that I spoke with Myra and she said we were all set. Nothing like waiting until the last minute! When I later recounted this story to Stafford Boyd 88, he said, what's the big deal, there's always important stuff which doesn't come together until the last minute... We are going to do the insurance WAYYYY in advance next time. Anyway, I was fortunate that traffic was light and I arrived at Encina by 1015am, in plenty of time for the 11am rally. I had time to take a few pictures of the Encina campus, which was recently repainted and looks very nice with it's sharp red trim. The first alumni I met was Jan Heintz Hammon 75, one of the reunion committee volunteers. It has been most interesting organizing this event, as most of the members have never met before or even talked on the phone. Very unlike organizing our class reunion where I knew everyone. We signed in and stopped by to say hi to Principal Myrtle Berry before heading over to the gym. On the way, we peeked into the newly modernized cafeteria, which looks good as new and ready to host the next alumni event! The Encina cafeteria seems to be much bigger than the El Camino cafeteria and certainly has a lot more windows and light. When I got to the gym, the Encina cheerleaders were practicing outside. I ran into Janna Snedden Curtis 83, who stood out as she was accompanied by her son and daughter. Janna's daughter was wearing her Encina cheerleader outfit and her son was wearing an Encina football scrimmage jersey! It was just too cute! The Encina cheerleaders thought so too and I took a great picture of them with Janna's daughter. I've added pictures I took at the rally and Applebee's here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming2000/rally.htm I hope to have time to add more pictures this weekend. We went into the foyer of the gym. A student, her name escapes me but she was also taking polaroids at the game, said she was in charge of the alumni. She pointed out our section of the stands and said we were to all wait in the foyer and enter en masse, breaking through a banner they would hold up in front of the door! I got out the nametags I had brought for the alumni who had signed up and started handing them out. One of the students volunteered to help and organized the nametags by classyear on the floor of the foyer where the alumni could easily find them. Soon the foyer was filled with alumni. One of the most heartwarming episodes I witnessed was when cheerleader Tasha Goff spotted Stafford Boyd 88. Stafford taught at Encina and was student activities director until he moved to Colorado this past summer to teach. Tasha was literally in tears at seeing that Stafford had returned to Encina for the homecoming festivities! I believe Stafford said that Tasha was also student body president? Tasha was very friendly and spent a lot of time talking with the alumni after the rally. A very very nice young lady! Although we had some no shows for the rally, we also had quite a few show up who had not rsvped. On the teacher side, we had Stafford Boyd 88, John Knurr, Orlin Schuler, Ray Klinefelter, Louis Huber and Vince Marelich. There were probably about 50 alumni at the rally. If you look at the pictures you can see that we almost filled out section of the stands. When the rally started, they opened the door to the foyer and the alumni streamed into the gym, tearing a big alumni banner they held up in front of the door. We sat down in our own section of the bleachers between the junior and senior classes. For those who were used to the Apaches, it was a little strange to see the Bulldog mascot but the spirit was the same! And I can remember the last time Encina's football team was 6-0-1. Stafford Boyd 88, Janna Curtis 83, Doralynn Co 94 and Devasco Bowers (asst varsity football coach) were the judges for the rally. The cheerleaders went around the gym, letting each class show their spirit. They introduced the student royalty, the JV and varsity football teams, the normal rally type stuff except with Bulldogs. They even let the alumni do a cheer after some alumni complained about not getting a turn. It was the "we are the alumni, and no one could be prouder" cheer! I think I have it on video. I was busy taking pictures and videoing so I didn't really pay attention to details. As at last year's rally, my overall impression was that this is a really good bunch of kids with lots of spirit! The senior class won the rally. Quite convincingly I thought. We were sitting right next to them and it was very loud. They were constantly doing the "Senior Power" chant with the stamping feet... You remember that right? The Encina students and staff were very helpful and friendly and happy to have the alumni take an interest in the current school. I hope even more alumni can come next year. It was very nostalgic and fun to attend the rally! APPLEBEE'S After the rally, we headed over to Applebee's next to the Century Theaters. They have one area full of Encina memorabilia so it seemed like an appropriate place to have lunch. In the lobby I ran into one of the Randazzo brothers (who didn't attend Encina) but noticed all the folks wearing Encina garb. I saw his brother Terry Randazzo 72 at the homecoming party that evening, a funny coincidence! Or maybe not. Anyone have Terry's email address? We started with a small group of six or seven. However, more and more alumni and teachers showed up until we had most of one room filled with Encinians. We had to bribe the surrounding tables to move so we could sit together! The waitress was a good sport when we kept adding more tables and asked for "separate checks". Louis Huber arrived late and didn't get his order until late. I offered to share my fries with him and he promptly dowsed them with so much salt that Ray Klinefelter said, Louis, why don't you have some fries with your salt or something to that effect. Steve Palmer 74 treated me to lunch. Thanks Steve! Most of the conversation at lunch revolved around the teachers and they had some good stories to tell. John Knurr lives in Wisconsin now but usually comes out once a year for the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee. Louis Huber lives in Anchorage now but was visiting his family in Sacramento. Louis is quite a character and had some good stories about Alaska and Encina. I commented that I had been unable to get a hold of Jim Aubert. Orlin Schuler explained that Jim spends most of his time up the coast at their second home and dug a piece of paper out of his wallet with Jim's cellphone number on it. I don't know what happened but Jim Aubert was at the party that night. Dr. Ray Klinefelter is a management consultant these days and you can read his bio on the teacher bios page. Ray recently moved back to Sacramento and read about the party in the Sacramento Bee. It was interested to hear from the teachers point of view about school politics and that sort of thing. You never think about stuff like that when you're a student. We ended up staying at Applebee's until about 2pm. I forgot I offered to buy the reunion committee a round of drinks so I still owe them next year... Teachers: Louis Huber Ray Klinefelter John Knurr Orlin Schuler Alumni: Bonnie McFarland Kaplan 63 Harlan Lau 73 Sande Byerley Jaeke 74? Julie Eissinger Meadow 74 Terri Jurich Howard 74 Steve Palmer 74 Jan Heintz Hammon 75 Laura Vasquez Lavallee 77 Chris Moser Taylor 78 Kathleen O'Neill Cabe 79 Janet Russel Mason 79 Tracy Taylor Tolbert 91 Michelle Harvey 91 and daughter Kassandra Harvey A few of us from the reunion committee had planned to meet at my mom's house that afternoon to work on the decorations with Chris Moser Taylor 78. However, Chris said she had everything under control. So Jan Heintz Hammon 75 and I spent an hour or so tearing and sorting and alphabetizing the four hundred nametags. And that was just for the alumni and faculty, none of the guests. Laura Bui 93 came by as we were about to leave for El Camino HS, bringing her banners and information sign. PREPARTY I couldn't attend the prepary at the Candlerock so someone who was there will have to send me a report to include in the next update. Rett? Lucia? I know that Lucia Churches 73 and various other folks never made it to the homecoming party at all so they must have had a good time at the Rock. We'll have to try and plan better next time so that the events don't conflict with one another, as I missed seeing some of those who stayed at the Candlerock. PREGAME PARTY Can you say, incredible turnout! The place was packed! Jan Heintz 75, Laura Bui 93 and I arrived shortly after 4pm at El Camino HS to start setting up. Once we located the cafeteria and figured out how to get inside, we found that: 1. a play rehearsal was going on 2. a big stage was set up at one end of the cafeteria, taking up about 1/4 of the cafeteria How were we supposed to set up for the party? Jan talked with the drama teacher, who was nice but firm. She said that she had the cafeteria until 5pm. We explained that we had the cafeteria reserved at 5pm and had been told we could start setting up at 4pm but she said this was the time they had been given for rehearsals and they needed all of it. Fortunately, the faculty room which we planned to use as the entrance to the cafeteria was available so we were able to set up the nametags, alumni clothing, guest books, banners, etc, in the faculty room without bothering the rehearsal. I watched Steve Palmer 74 set up his laptop and printer in the corner and wondered what the heck he had brought his printer to the party for... Jolanne Tierney 81 moved all her DJ equipment into the corner of the cafeteria but had to wait until the rehearsal was over before she could set up her equipment near the stage. Laura Bui 93 put up her lovely banners, so that folks could figure out where the entrance to the party was. One of Laura's banners in the gym made it onto the news. Chris Moser Taylor 78 brought out her football centerpieces and had folks start making tissue flowers in the apache colors to decorate the tables. Chris made that great sign with lights spelling out "Encina" which added a special touch! Both her football centerpieces and "Encina" sign were on the KCRA news clip. Jan Heintz Hammon 75 started setting up the snack and food tables and filling the ice chests with ice. Jan and the other committee members did a great job with the food tables and cleaning up afterwards. This was a real take charge group of folks on the reunion committee. Lorna Cline Gragg 72/73 hung up the alumni clothing on the portable rack provided by Lisa Ott Williams 81. Lorna was assisted during the evening by Gail Haynes Veri 73 and Carolyn Teel Rand 73. Thank you Lorna making the alumni clothing available for the homecoming party! Lynne Gile Tracy 78, VP at El Camino, stopped by to make sure everything was okay. Lynne helped us get permission to use the El Camino cafeteria for the party. In the midst of the chaos of setting up, a photographer from KCRA-TV3 showed up. I had talked with Tom DuHain 68 of KCRA earlier in the week and he thought the homecoming party was newsworthy. The photographer interviewed me for a while, then took some shots of the room. We heard from an alumni that it ran earlier in the evening. Kerry Shearer 72 drove home and set his VCR for the 11pm news. I sent Tom DuHain 68 a thank you and offered to send him a complementary alumni sweatshirt or jacket. Thanks Tom! And thanks Kerry for giving me Tom's number. Are Encina alumni well connected or what? We had given out Steve Palmer 74's cellphone number for emergencies and so when Steve handed me the phone, it wasn't good news. First, Jerry Burks 71 called to say his cat was ill and had to be taken to the vet so he wouldn't be able to drive in the parade. We only had 10 cars so this wasn't welcome news. Then Heide Mathews Boullt 78 called and said she wouldn't be able to drive either. Down to eight cars... Later in the evening Jerry called back and said, my cat is okay and I'll be there after all! So I think we ended up with nine cars, although I missed the parade as I'll explain later. I want you to all buy convertibles this year so we have enough cars for next year's parade! Actually, we would have been okay except that we were trying to supply all the student cars in addition to the alumni cars. Larry Murray 65 and Laura Bui 93 hung around the nametag table, making sure that folks got their nametags and guarding the big pile of donations which accumulated. Head custodian Lane Stile hung out with us for the evening, making sure we had what we needed. Lane and his crew cleaned up while we were at the game and kept an eye on the cafeteria while we were gone, making sure Jolanne Tierney 81's valuable DJ equipment was not unattended. Between 530 and 600, folks finally started to arrive until the cafeteria was packed with people and it started to get really warm. Bob Rollins said I should have them turn on the air conditioning in the cafeteria. I asked Lane Stile to do so but he said the cafeteria doesn't have air conditioning! I think Lane opened a few windows at that point. Folks were good about remembering to bring something to share and we had plenty of snacks and drinks. Susan Bush, Eric Dahlin and Maureen Drawbert were helping the students cook burgers and taking turns bringing them from the stadium to the cafeteria for sale to the alumni. Other Encina staff may have also helped but those are the only ones I heard about. Stephanie Woo was walking around with her husband, videoing and interviewing alumni and faculty all evening. Her husband had a little card he held up which said told people to give their name and class. I'm looking forward to seeing Stephanie's video when she has time to edit the tapes from the evening. My mother Mary Lau showed up with her friends Maryann Kvasager, Helen Albright and Lynn Jensen. Helen's children James Albright 81 and Laura Albright Heins 85 were at the party, along with Lynn's daughter Mary Jensen Grebitus 86. James is a good friend of my brother Bert Lau 81, who was also at the party. I couldn't find the nametag I had made for my mom so she went around wearing a nametag which said "Harlan's mom". We had an amazing number of faculty show up for the pregame party, including many whom had not rsvped: Bill Derderian, Irene Leafe, Lesley Saladen, Jim Aubert, and my old neighbor Charlie Reade 76, who is one of the few alumni who have taught at Encina. I finally got to meet the amazing Christine Kojima, who I've been corresponding with for two years! Christine looks so young it's hard to believe she's old enough to consider retirement! Christine was the first teacher to rsvp and got the whole ball rolling when it came to teachers and staff. Judy Wilson said she would come if Christine did. Laverne Gonzales said he would come if he could ride in the parade with Christine. You know the end result. I got to meet the famous English teacher Joe Lawrence, who sends me the most entertaining email messages, one of which is featured later in this update. Joe does not normally attend these functions but I'm glad he made an exception for us. As did my favorite history teacher Bill Derderian. Bill, I'm sorry I teased you about showing up after you said you probably wouldn't come. I was just so pleasantly surprised and happy to see you! I didn't get to talk with you so I hope you come again next time. Then there was Jack Dutton, who didn't look a day older than when I had him for math almost 30 years ago. We owe his daughters thanks for taking care of their mother for the evening so that Jack could be there at the party! I hear that Jack thoroughly enjoyed himself so I hope we will see him at future events. There was my old English teacher Eleanor Brown, who retired as assistant superintent of San Juan last year and helped us get permission to have the homecoming party at El Camino HS this year. Eleanor is supposed to be retired but she sounds just as busy as ever. There was Cornelia Whitaker, Encina vice principal, whose efforts got us coverage in the Sacramento Bee. I didn't really know Cornelia that well at Encina but I've been corresponding with her so much she feels like an old friend. Even Principal Jack Bassett dropped in for a while, although he couldn't stay long. I still remember when Jack talked me into running for Student Body Vice President years ago. I met Encina's second principal James W Smith. So along with Jack Bassett and Myrtle Berry, we had three of Encina's principals in attendance during the pregame party! James fought Bay Area traffic from Walnut Creek to attend. Gayle Kernick, who taught in the 60s and returned to Encina as a vice principal in the late 80s, was there. I met Cliff LaForge, who drove down from Springfield,OR and Ginny Prvateer Corsi, who came from Boulder,CO for the party. I saw my old yearbook teacher Karen McClelland Lee and met her daughter Amy McClelland Killer 86, who just returned from her honeymoon. I had a funny conversation with Irene Leafe at the party. Her email had started bouncing a while back. I called her at work and asked for her new email address. She said he would rather not give it out as she really wasn't interested in Encina stuff anymore. So I was surprised to see Irene turn up at the party. It turns out Irene just didn't want me to put her back on the Encina Update mailing list. She said they were just toooo long and she didn't have time to read them. Irene gave me her new email address so I can tell her about the next party, so long as I don't send her Encina Updates. I met Jim Aubert, Don Brodnansky, Susan Bush, Marilyn Carlson Pearce Spartz, Cheryl Chambers, Evelyn Fedler, Gayle Kernick, Irene Leafe, Terry Reed, Bob Rollins, Lesley Saladen and Judy Wilson for the first time that night. Lisa Lowe Rodland 79 talked with Home Economics teacher Mrs Leech. Does anyone know how to contact Mrs Leech? I didn't meet, but heard from various folks that faculty Robin Arnold, Maureen Drawbert, Richard Drawbert, Russ Hibbard, Kathy Howser, Kandi Kost Herbert 68, Romano Luchini, Jack Carey, Don Day and Dalton Nezey were also at the party. Did anyone see Bart Lagomarsino, Alice Kubo or Tom Wilde? I was sorry registrar JoAnne Smith wasn't there. Stephanie Woo said she is recovering from pneumonia. JoAnne will be retiring later this year and has been great about helping to locate alumni and faculty. JoAnne knows everybody! The class signs worked well, although there wasn't space to put them up on the walls as we had planned. Instead we distributed the signs on eight tables scattered around the room. It appears that most folks signed in under their class year, so we have a pretty good record of those at the pregame and postgame parties, but not of those who only attended the game. I think next year we'll put the class year signup lists in the same area as the nametags and guest book so everyone will see them. HOMECOMING GAME Encina defeated San Juan 22-16 and continues in their quest for an undefeated season at 6-0-1. The first string quarterback was injured in last week's game against Mesa Verde and didn't play against San Juan. Tom Durkee told me this really limited their passing game against San Juan. Myrtle Berry wrote that paid attendance for the Homecoming game was 897! Coach Tom Durkee wrote "Usual attendance is between 200 to 300 people (and I've seen a lot less!)" Tom wrote that this was the biggest crowd the football team had ever played before. We were very fortunate that the weather gods smiled upon us! After seeing forecasts of showers and high winds for Friday and experiencing brief drizzle and heavy overcast during the afternoon, the weather for the game was mild and calm, shirtsleeve weather. Thank you weather gods! Due to having to try and herd folks from the cafeteria to the game, I didn't arrive until the second quarter had started. The stands seemed pretty full to me, although I think we could squeeze in a few more folks next year. Then I tried to round up faculty to ride in the alumni cars in the homecoming parade, only to find there were scattered all over the stands. When we finally got to the parking lot, I discovered that the order of the cars had been changed from last year. Last year, the alumni cars went FIRST. We dropped off the alumni and because the students needed more cars, the alumni cars took another pass around the track with the student royalty. This year, unbeknowst to me, the student royalty and floats were first. This meant we weren't able to reuse the alumni cars and I was left with about ten faculty with no place to ride. We only had two cars full of faculty in the parade instead of five. Sorry about that. We'll try and do better next year... Many thanks to the alumni who drove in their convertibles in the parade. I loved Pepai Falck Whipple 73's blue 58 Ford Skyliner Retractable convertible! What a fabulous looking automobile. I didn't get many pictures of the parade so I'm waiting to see those Steve Palmer 74 and Rollin Coxe 64 took. And the alumni float was fabulous! Many thanks to Paul Stewart 76 and those who helped work on the float. The 70s yearbook with 70s alumni was very cool. Lisa Lowe Rodland 79's father lent us the trailer. Lisa told me she was at the party from 4 to 6pm for setup, then went home and only came back for the parade to take a picture of the float for her dad. Drivers in parade: Eleanor Brown Cynthia Connell 73 Linda Weatherford Ballance 62 Greg Grant 75 Pepai Falck Whipple 73 Lorna Cline Gragg 72/73 Jerry Burks 71 Susanne Pierson Currie 75 Kris Grasso Elmer 70 Float: Paul Stewart 76 Gary Kennedy 78 Jim Bain 78 Don Hagy 76 Sande Byerley Jaeke 74 Marla Byerley Windham 76 Chris Moser Taylor 78 Dennis Peck 76 (money for supplies) Steve Kearney 73 (money for supplies) Irene Birchfield Campbell 68 (Apache mascot) After the parade, I had my picture taken with Irene Birchfield Campbell 68, who was wearing her Apache mascot costume. Irene has already sent me her pictures, which include a shot of Irene with the Encina Bulldog mascot! During the pregame party and the game, the students were selling a burger, chips and a drink for $5. In addition, they were selling the lightsticks that Steve Palmer 74 and Randy Palmer 71 donated and taking polaroid pictures of alumni for $2/picture. Many thanks to the alumni who supported the students in their fundraising efforts. Myrtle Berry said that student government has not tallied the results for the evening yet. POSTGAME PARTY After the game, many folks went back to the cafeteria for the postgame party, including some who missed the pregame party. Most of the teachers and staff left before or after the game, so it was mostly alumni at the postgame party. About 10pm, I was surprised when the Steve Palmer 74 used the PA system to call me up and receive some gifts from the reunion committee. The first gift was a large memory board on which Steve had attached some pictures which he had taken and printed out that evening (I was wondering why he brought his printer to the party). The board was covered with signings from many of the alumni at the party. This is a great keepsake but I'm sorry to say my wife will not let me put it up in the living room . The second gift was a lucite trophy inscribed to the "Harlan Lau, the best webmaster in cyberspace from Encina alumni". This resides proudly in my section of the china cabinet! I was too surprised to address the crowd but I really appreciate the sentiment and thoughtfulness of these gifts. My only regret is that I did not invite the members of the reunion committee to the front to share with me the credit for making the homecoming party a success. For this party was the result of the efforts of many Encina alumni! By about 1130, the cafeteria was pretty empty and the reunion committee set to work cleaning up and putting everything away. We had a lot of leftover snacks which were either thrown away or left for the custodial staff. As I was talking in the parking lot with Steve Palmer 74 and Jan Heintz 75 about midnight, Kerry Shearer 72 drove up with a tape of the KCRA 11 oclock news. I watched the tape when I got home and was pleased to see the Encina homecoming party got almost a minute of coverage. They filmed about 5pm while we were setting up so their weren't many people in the clip. There was a brief soundbite from the interview with me and they commented that Tom DuHain was an Encina alumni, although he couldn't be there that night. Early Saturday morning I went back home to Mountain View. After watching my first grade son play two roller hockey games and score four goals, we headed back to Sacramento for a family wedding. Boy it was windy Saturday afternoon! It was funny because a lot of my wife's relatives had seen me on the news Friday night and Saturday morning. Tom Philips 65 was at the wedding and I proceeded to tell him about what he had missed (I had told his wife about the party earlier in the week). HOMECOMING NOTES I would like to thank everyone on the reunion committee who made the Homecoming 2000 party such a memorable evening. And special thanks to all those who contributed funds so that we did not have to charge admission. I never imagined a few months ago that we would have the turnout that we did on Friday night. It gave me such a great feeling to have helped to bring together so many alumni, teachers and staff, many of whom had not seen each other for so long, under one roof, where they could visit and reminisce. I was so proud to be an Encina alumni that night. For those of you who were there, I hope you will spread the word so that we have even more alumni and faculty at the next event. And now I would like to share a few of the notes I received this week... Myrtle Berry wrote: "On behalf of the Encina Staff & Students, we want to express our appreciation to all of the alumni who contributed to the homecoming activities. It was a really an impressive sight to see the number of alumni who actually showed up and participated. (It obviously did wonders for our gate)! and snack bar! I'm glad to hear that things went well at the post party. When I visited the pre-party, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. A great deal of the success should be attributed to you and your excellent "PR" skills. (you really know how to hook-em)! We look forward to hosting the event here next year. I hope that the alumni felt a sense of warmth and appreciation from our student body and staff. " Christine Kojima wrote: "What a wonderful time I had! I cannot believe how many people showed up. It was so nice to meet your mom, see Bert again (yes Bert, I remember you fondly) and finally meet YOU!!!!!! I met and spoke with many of my former students and was pleasantly surprised that they remembered me although I am shorter, fatter and many years older! I feel so rejuvenated, this reunion was a wonderful reminder of why I entered the teaching profession in the first place . So many fond memories and so little time. When is the next reunion? I was very impressed by the amount of faculty members that attended and the distance that some traveled to get there. Thank you Harlan for a memorable evening." Susan McGuire wrote: "I just saw you on Channel 3 News! I am soooooo sorry to have missed Homecoming last night. A fellow friend and teacher at Woodcreek was unable to make it to her supervision duty and I filled in for her. It looks like everyone had a ball! You deserve a giant pat on the back and many "Thank Yous" for all your incredible dedication and love for Encina. You are truly a web "MASTER"!!! Best Wishes to everyone!! Thanks! Susie" Kelly Dimmitt 86 had the BEST EXCUSE for missing the party: "You would never BELIEVE what happened to me Thursday afternoon. I was in the kitchen, and my husband was at one counter and I was at the other side. Roger was making a salad and was cutting tomatoes and I was in a rush to get out of the house because my sister was going to do my hair for the party. Well, I was backing and Roger turned around and half of the blade of the knife went into my lower back right next to the tailbone. Then he had to take it out, which then it really started to hurt, so I had to go to Kaiser, get 8 stitches, and lay on my stomach because it was hitting a nerve. So I missed my hair appt, The Homecoming Party, and my husband was a best man in a wedding in Live Oak past Yuba City the next day. I was a very bitchy person and I could barely walk. Today is the first day I have been out. Matter of fact I am friends with a person who graduated in 1977 and he is watching me type this and is laughing his ass off (excuse the pun). Needless to say, IT WAS A KELLY MOMENT. These happen to me all the time." Charles "CJ" Dow 87 wrote: I (Charles "C.J." Dow) attended the after the football game party along with Carlo Gomez ('87). WE BOTH had a great time!!!!!!! It was purely coincidental that we showed up...we had the idea a couple of weeks ago to attend (the first since our graduation), and had know idea what a "production" we had in store for us! It was GREAT seeing some people I had not seen for years! Thank you for making the evening so special! WOW! I can not believe what I saw on Friday night! Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think Encina had such an enthusiastic and organized alumni!!! To be very honest with you, the display of pride and excitement I witnessed Friday night, made me feel proud to have attended Encina High School. A feeling I have not had since the years I attended school there!" Chris Moser Taylor 78, head of decorations, wrote: I had a wonderful time, and met some really awesome people. Thanks everyone for all of your involvement...We couldn't have asked for a better committee. There was a lot of teamwork there... We could move mountains! I AM looking forward to next year, so anytime everyone's ready... Leslie Cameron Silva 65 wrote: "I just got home from "The Party"! I didn't see that many people from my class (75), but I did get to meet some people that knew my brothers (63&65). This was an unexpected pleasure because my one brother was killed in Viet Nam and not only did they remember him but, one of them even played football whith him. Fantastic! Thanks so much for organizing such a fun event. We decided that next time we would bring our daughters, I hope there is a next time. We especially enjoyed the alumni float and are trying to resurrect our cheerleading uniforms!! Debbie said that there were also some guys there who had come to town for their 30th reunion that were at the El Camino cafeteria after the game. I think their names were Craig Sarmento and Ken Lambert and I can't remember the other guy, I had already left. I really enjoyed seeing Terry Randazzo and Larry Fahn. Well once again, good job and thanks!! YEARBOOKS Many thanks to Martha Dwyer 70, who brought her 62 and 67 yearbooks to the homecoming party for me to borrow for a while. Actually, I guess the 62 yearbook belongs to her sister Joanna Dwyer 62. I saw Jon Dahlberg 71 at the party too and I would like to return Jon's 68 and 69 yearbooks, which I have had for a year or two. I have a new proposal. If you would be willing to lend me your yearbooks from homecoming party to homecoming party, perhaps we could have a lending library of sorts. I have the 1970-2000 yearbooks but the 60-69 yearbooks are not available. Originally I thought I would scan in the yearbooks I have been borrowing but there is too much in the way of personal signings to make this practical. However, the yearbooks are an invaluable resource when it comes to looking up folks and figuring out who is who. Currently I have the following yearbooks on loan: 62: Martha Dwyer 70 63,64,65,66: Ron McFarland 66 67: Martha Dywer 70 68,69: Jon Dahlberg 71 I would like to return Jon's yearbooks, which I have had the longest. Can someone lend me their 68 and 69 yearbooks? I would also like to borrow the 60 and 61 yearbooks, which I have never seen. Can you help! Alternatively, does anyone know of a service which can copy a book for you. I would be willing to pay a reasonable amount to make copies of the yearbooks I am missing. I believe I could borrow Encina's archival set in the vaults if there was a service who could copy and bind them. CLASSES No more reunions this year! Time for classes with reunions next year to start getting organized... 1970 REUNION The 30 year reunion has come and gone. I saw a lot of 70s alumni at the homecoming party on Friday. Here's what Bob Maples 70 had to say about the reunion on Saturday: "The 1970 fighting Apaches' reunion was great thanks to Pam Deason, John Hagus and the rest of the 1970 Reunion committee. If we were scoring the reunion on a scale of 1-to-10 for fun it definitely was a 10 for me. I came close to not going except for a great golf outing organized by Neil Hankin. On Friday, Neil Hankin, Chris Conrad, Scott Harper, Bill Wagnon, Jim Nesselbush, Dan Smith, Ken Blas, Don Trant, Mark Melnicoe, Dave Marell and myself played golf at Turkey Creek followed by a few beers and cigars at the club house and dinner at Beersman in Lincoln. What a great outing! It was a lot of fun to see most of my old class mates. There were a lot people missing that I wished would have attended, but I too almost didn't make the trip. I missed the Mary's Collentine, Reddick, and Reckenwald. Kathy Hyrkus, Laurie Moran, Linda Baker and many others who I wished I could have seen at the reunion. It was fun to see Craig Sarmento and meet his wife for the first time. He definitely married up -- as many of us Apaches did. The past 30-years have been kind to some of us and hard on others. Marily Reese was pretty in high school and is now down right beautiful. She definitely made our class look great. We need to find out what her magic formula is and share it with the rest of class. Seeing Marily and Dan Smith were two of my biggest highlights. I wish them the best. Thanks to Craig Sarmento, Kenny Lambert, Scott Harper, Neil Hankin, and everyone else who bought me a drink. And, you are welcome if I bought you. It was a great time with some special people who all have a common bond of being a 1970 fighting Apache. I look forward to staying in contact with as many as possible." 1976 REUNION Matt Shelton 76 wrote: Hi everybody, First off, please accept my apology for my poor performance as webmaster. I am currently unable to access the webpages for our class, as my computer that has the website pages on it has been giving me fits for the last few months. I have made numerous attempts to rectify the situation, but it appears that it will be at least another month before I will be able update the site. There are actual reasons for it taking so long, but they can't be helped at the moment. For the time being, we will have to be content with the egroup page for anything new. The second thing I wanted to do is open discussion on our 25th reunion. Such as: Is there much intetest in having one? Where, when, music, munchies??? invite other classes? I will take on the role of reunion coordinator for the time being (I'm not quite ready to jump in with both feet as I don't know how busy I will be when things start happening). Let me hear from you. I think that graciously hosting events sometimes goes on un-noticed and I'd hate for that to happen here. Our evening was elegant and allowed us to wander around, take pictures, and get to know one another again! We only missed the dance floor for those of us wanting to get a little more wild! :0) But - that too can be an expense (as we all know). We had name tags with our high school pictures, ... balloons of our colors, free gifts for a raffle, a full meal, and a bar to keep us happy! Students traveled in from all over the states! It was GREAT seeing everyone as grown adults (YUK - there's that "A" word)! I know, for me, .... it does NOT seem like 10 years ago! BUT, .. I really enjoyed seeing everyone and being able to catch up with family and careers. I noticed that I could pretty easily tell the women but the guys were tougher. It seemed as though you men developed after high school! Anyway - had a nice time! I'm only sorry that I didn't get to see more of you! LISA DE LEON 90 Occupation: Public Relations and Marketing Coordinator Bio: I thought I did this already and found out at the reunion that I hadn't. Where to begin. After graduating from Encina I decided to pass on UC Davis and stay in Sacramento to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. I spent 2 years at Sac City completing my undergraduate requirements for an intention to focus on Pre-Med. While there I founded their MESA/MEP Pre-Med Club and felt I was well on my way. I looked at several schools and finally realized I couldn't afford Stanford and settled for San Francisco State University. USF's Medical School was and still is very friendly to SFSU students. In my senior year as a Zoology major with the intent for pre-med I decided to give it all up. Frustrated with my choice to drive myself nuts I realized I couldn't continue and changed my major to something I enjoyed much more, Photography. After graduating from college I ran off to Los Angeles. Los Angeles afforded me wonderful opportunities not only in my career but socially as well. I met a lot of very interesting people and grew into a very independent spirit. I even started my own photography business. Celebrities, parties and VIP rooms do get old however. Which brings me back to Sacramento. Ten years later Sacramento has really grown up. I now work with a young high-tech company and love the place and the people. Trivia: What would be considered "interesting"? I was the President of my sorority, Phi Sigma Sigma. Friends: My best friend through out high school was Shannon Radford and until the reunion I hadn't talked to her in years. It was great to reconnect. Other great friends were Mary Green, Brad Cerutti ('89), David Francis ('89), Alex Philo,Brooke Gentle, Robin Gentle, Ed Fox, Deanna Narvez, Vanessa Watts, Cher Michael, Rob Daleiden and so many others. Hobbies: Well I love photography and learned quickly after having my own business that I prefer to do it for myself. I also love to travel, going to the theater, the arts, sports (mostly watching, not so much participating) and spending time with my family. Kids: I don't have any yet. Grade_school: Hillcrest in SF, Starr King in Carmichael and Del Paso Manor in Sacramento..I get around. Junior_high: Albert Einstein Jr. High Junior_high_friends: Alex Philo, Ryan Engle, Robin Gentle Memorable_teachers: Mrs. Lord!!! I can't tell you how much she made me think. She was an incredible teacher that had the ability to instill confidence in the worst and best of us. Mrs. Sutliff was my chemistry goddess and I miss her pushing me forward. Mr. Tracy, Mr. MacElroy, Mr. B and Mrs.Leaf who supported the spirit squads and made us all work harder to be more than the goofy girls on the sidelines. Favorite_memory: There were so many good times! Senior cut day, rallies, hiding in the baseball dugout, dressed all in black with a carton of raw eggs. Story: In retrospect I really went to school with an incredible group of people. The best stories I can think of could get me into jail so we will leave that alone. I really believe the best stories are yet to come. Sibling_info: Christine De Leon, class of 1994. Coach Durkee asked me to tell the alumni that they have plenty of alumni hats left. Tom ordered about 150 hats and I believe they've sold about 30-35 hats so far. So they would really appreciate any help from the alumni as they've already paid for the hats and it's tying up precious funds. I talked to several folks at the party who were disappointed that they didn't get a chance to buy a hat during the pregame party. I actually sold my two hats to two of the Dahlberg brothers as they were leaving the party that night. At that point we weren't sure how many hats were left. Dave Dahlberg 77 bought one of my hats and wrote: "For those of you who missed homecoming, it was a blast! For those who questioned the wisdom of buying the alumni hat sight-unseen for $20, please reconsider. These are pretty cool hats: white with a red bill, embroidered Apache and Bulldog logos on the sides, and embroidered in gold on the front it has "Encina Alumni." You might want to contact Harlan if you're interested, and he can put you in touch with the coach. They probably have some hats left. The extra $10 of the price goes to the team" Here are the particulars should you wish to order: "Dear Alumni- We would like to inform you of our 2000 football fundraiser. I have made arrangements with a sporting goods vendor to order the necessary hats. They will be white with a cardinal bill and eyelet's, with Encina Alumni in gold block letters, surrounding a football. The hats will be adjustable, so one size will fit all. The price of the hats will be $20, with $10 paying for the hat and $10 going to the football program. Any additional donations would be highly appreciated, and if you do not desire a hat, any donation would be welcome. We have many costs during the season which include safety checks of all equipment, doctors at games, bus rides to away games, new equipment, ect. Unfortunately in many cases, the parents of our players and students are not in a financial position to donate funds. As in many years past, Coach Hibbard has generously spent countless dollars of his own money on many of the things our program has needed. I would like to stress how much the coaching staff at Encina would appreciate any hat orders or donations to our program. Thank You! Now for the facts- please mail your checks to Encina High School, c/o Varsity Football, 1400 Bell St., Sacramento, CA 95825. You may get the hats in two ways; 1) pick it up from Encina yourself, 2) send a self-addressed envelope with postage and we will mail it to you when the hats arrive If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to call 971-7557 and ask for Coach Durkee or Coach Hibbard. Once again, thank you for your support of the Encina Football Program. Coach Durkee" You can email Coach Durkee at TSDurkee@aol.com EMAIL I have an email problem and I'm hoping that someone out there can help me. I use Outlook Express for email. I use the Inbox Assistant message rules to automatically sort incoming mail into folders like "Encina", etc. We recently switched at work from a POP3 mail to IMAP mail where the mail stays on the mail server. I have encountered two problems since we switched. First, the message rules for sorting incoming mail do not work with on my IMAP inbox so my mail is not sorted anymore. Believe me, when you get as much incoming mail as I do, this is a serious problem. Second, under the IMAP folder, you cannot create nested mail folders. That is, you can only have folders under the IMAP folders but no subfolders. I've searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and haven't found any solution. I like Outlook Express 5.0 and don't want to switch to Netscape mail, which is what we are standardizing on at work. I would appreciate any suggestions or workarounds from folks who understand this email stuff. WHAT'S NEW I went through the latest classmate.com additions, so there are a lot of new alumni. In addition, many alumni heard about the homecoming party through the newspaper, tv news or word or mouth. 10/26/00: Ron Allen 63, Ronald Morgan 70, Craig Fisher 96, Dennis Archibald 74, Sheila Kuntz 87, Janice Gerrity 79, Ernie Vazquez 99/bio, John Zimmerman 75, Chantel Beck 90 update, Amy Rhoads 89, Teresa Kirkpatrick 98/bio, Sandy Lewis 65 10/25/00: James Jones 87 bio, Carlo Gomez 87, Anne Jones 72, Belle Hendrickson 66, Aaron Paulus 89/bio, Kristen Wolcott 92, Russell Hauf 87 update, Ramona Brizzee 98, Alina Manzenko 99/00, Thom Kimbro 61, Suzanne Abegglen 62, Margaret Nadey 63, Lief Hendrickson 64, Judy Zierlein 64, Linda Pohto 67, Dianna Dunham 69, Van Rodgers 72, Daniel Meyers 72, Dixie Frank 74, Diane Eldredge 74, Arthur Wolf 75, Eleanor Lokke 76, Ken Burrows 78, Betty Matchett 79, Janice Gerrity 79, Tim Quinn 82, Shawn McGrath 82, Greg McCord 83, Mark Reibson 83, Bridget Nietzke 84, Joan Clifford 84, Bree Medcalf 84, Lisa Tennison 87, Erin Snyder 87, Elena Garcia 88, John Smith 88, Michael Pedeupe 88, Nadine Cabrera 89, Robert McClintock 90, Gus Alvarez 91, April Williamson 92, Vicki Garrison 96, Derek Tybert 96, Alex Tardif 96, Victor Sanchez 96, Paul Gill 96, Craig Fisher 96, Damian Barham 96, Timothy Parish 96, Adrianne Simon 96, Eugene Burt 97, Daniel Tremper 97, Arslan Chaudhry 97, Glenn Beedy 97, Dana Baker 97, Marcus Johnson 97, Cyntia Black 98, David Cisneros 98, Teresa Kirkpatrick 98, Molly Kraushar 98, Melissa Arner 99.
