Sent: Thursday, October 19, 2000 5:19 PM Subject: Encina Update (notes/publicity/football/clothing/rally/preparty/homecoming/parade/float/rsvps/classes/siblings/bios) ENCINA ALUMNI, This update is sponsored by Cornelia Whitaker. This weekend is a big one! Homecoming 2000 party on Friday, October 20th. Class of 70's 30 year reunion on Saturday, October 21th. Class of 90's 10 year reunion on Saturday, October 21th. I recently received RSVPs from Encina staff Dalton Nezey, Kandi Kost Herbert 68, Cliff LaForge, Bart Lagomarsino, Alice Kubo and Ray Klinefelter! HOMECOMING NOTES The pregame party starts at 5pm at the El Camino HS cafeteria. The homecoming game starts at 730 in the El Camino stadium. If you are going to the pregame or postgame party, be sure to go in the main entrance where we will have nametags and a handout with useful information about the party. There will be blank nametags for those who did not RSVP. If you are going to the game first, please stop by the cafeteria and pick up your nametag. Even if you have not rsvped, you can make your own nametag using a blank Encina Homecoming nametag. This will identify you as an Encina alumni. If you come to the pregame party, please bring a softdrink and snack to share. You can either bring your own tailgate dinner or buy burgers, chips and a drink from Encina students for $5. Please use the tables which are set up only for eating and not for socializing. We have a limited number of tables. Look for your class banner (61-65, 66-70, ...) to find your classmates. Please sign in under your classyear so your classmates will know you are at the party. Throughout the evening, if you see someone with a PHOTO badge, feel free to ask to have your picture taken. Rollin Coxe 64, Steve Palmer 74 and I will be taking pictures which will be added to the website. If you have questions, anyone with a COMM (committee) nametags should be able to help you. Teachers and staff will have STAFF nametags. The weather forecast is mixed for Friday. Partly cloudy with a chance of showers. Bring appropriate clothing. What happened to my sunshine! Remember, NO ALCOHOL OR SMOKING is allowed on campus! If you have a late rsvp, please send your email to encina@encinahighschool.com Go Apaches! Go Bulldogs! PUBLICITY Mike Kelly 73 wrote me that the FRONT page of the Neighbor's Section of the Bee for the Arden/Carmichael area (10/19) has an article about the Encina Homecoming party! Many thanks to Cornelia Whitaker and her tireless efforts to convince the Bee that our story was newsworthy. I can't find the article on the sacbee website. Mike looked too. If you find it please email me the story. I've had several calls today as a result of the article. Kerry Shearer 72 gave me Tom DuHain 68's private number at KCRA-TV3. I talked with Tom and gave him the scoop on the Encina Homecoming party. Tom was very disappointed he had not heard about the party earlier. He gave me his email address so he will get the Encina Update and said he will try to attend next year. He would have come this year but is committed to speak in San Jose on Friday night. Tom said our party sounds pretty unique and he was enthusiastic about "selling" coverage to his news staff. I sent Tom details about the party and website and he promised to do his best to get us some coverage. He said it all depends on what's happening on Friday night, since any breaking news has priority. So get your VCRs set and let me know if we get any coverage on TV3. That would be so cool to have tv coverage... Keep your fingers crossed. Heather Kendall 73 wrote: "Bob Nannini (73) gave us a great plug for our homecoming event on "Top Five Bob" this morning. Way to go Bob." Lance Ballance 85 wrote: "Just wanted to let you know that today, thursday, & friday, from 10am to 3pm, I'll be giving the Encina homepage a plug on our studio Webcam. FOOTBALL Encina defeated Mesa Verde 8-6 on Friday night and is still undefeated with a record of 5-0-1. Russ Hibbard said they have to clean up after the game, but he'll try to stop by the cafeteria and visit the homecoming party. Come to the homecoming game and cheer on Encina's team! "They're Bulldog tough. BJ Mitchell helps lead Encina to best start in years" http://www.sacbee.com/neighbors/show_story.cgi?20001012/ac-525821Mtxt Read this article and get psyched up for the game! ALUMNI CLOTHING Lorna will be picking up the order Friday afternoon at noon. You will be able to pick up your clothes order at the pregame party starting at 5pm. Many thanks to Lisa Ott Williams 81, who is bringing her folding clothing rack to the party for Lorna to hang the clothes on. HOMECOMING RALLY The attendance continues to grow for the rally! We have over 50 folks signed up so far. Please check the list below if you signed up and make sure you are on it! I will bring namebadges for those who are signed up. Teachers Stafford Boyd 88, John Knurr and Orlin Schuler will also be at the rally. The alumni will have their own section of the stands between the juniors and the seniors (who have smaller classes than freshman and sophomores). Encina will need 3 or so alumni for judging the classes. The following folks have volunteered to judge the classes: Bonnie McFarland Kaplan 63 Steve Palmer 74 Jan Heintz Hammons 75 Janna Snedden Curtis 83 Doralynn Co 94 Linh Smith 94 Some of us will be having lunch lunch at Applebee's near Encina after the rally. This is the Applebee's which has the Encina memorabilia on display. Let me know if you want to join us so we can make a reservation. The students would like us to dress in clothes from the era we attended Encina if possible. If you attend you need to check in at the front office and I need to provide Encina with the names of the alumni who will be attending the rally. HOMECOMING PREPARTY Encina staff John Knurr, Orlin Schuler and Ginny Privateer will be at the Rock. Ginny invites other Encina staff and alumni to join them at the Candlerock before the pregame party at El Camino. "The Class of '73 is having a pre party Friday, October 20th from 4pm to 6pm at the Candlerock Lounge next to country club lanes! Anyone from the classes of 70,71,72,and 73 are strongly encouraged to attend. (smaller venue with drinks and food before facing the masses at El Camino). Please, no name tags or food.....we will survive on what we find at the Rock. Call me if you have questions @ (916) 362-5592 Rett Smart '73" HOMECOMING PARTY We will have some drinks and snacks to get started but we are asking attendees to bring drinks and snack to share. You can bring dinner (tailgate) or buy burgers from the students. Just to make it clear admission is free, food is NOT. Becky Hurley confirmed the food plans for Friday. The students will be selling a burger, chips and a soda for $5 at the pregame party and at the game. Parking will be a problem with the number of folks who are coming. Lorna Cline Gragg 72/73 informs me that if you are coming north on Eastern, you can turn right into a big parking lot before you reach the school. You may want to try this parking lot if the parking lot on El Camino is full. I would guess it will be full from the pregame party. Date: Friday, October 20, 2000 Event: Preparty Time: 4pm to 6pm Place: Candlerock Lounge (near Country Club Lanes) Event: Pregame party Time: 5pm to 730pm Place: El Camino HS cafeteria Event: Homecoming game/parade Time: 730pm to 930pm Place: El Camino HS stadium Event: Postgame party Time: 930pm to midnight Place: El Camino HS cafeteria WARNING: No ALCOHOL or SMOKING is permitted on campus! I think the the El Camino cafeteria will be a very good location for the homecoming party as it is easy walking distance from the stadium. In addition, the cafeteria can accomodate up to 700 people (standing) so we should have plenty of room for alumni, staff and their families. Food: Bring your own food (like a picnic or tailgate), along with NONALCOHOLIC drinks and a snack to share. Or buy burgers from the students and support Encina. Drinks/Snacks: We will have ice chests, ice, snack bowls along with a few drinks and snacks to get started, but not enough for everyone. Please bring something to share. Classes: We will have class year posters in 5 year increments (1961-65 ... 1995-2000) around the perimeter of the cafeteria. There will be space to print your name and class year on the poster so folks can see who is at the party. This also provides a unofficial record of attendance of sorts. Music: Jolanne Tierney 81 has volunteered to DJ for the party. Send your requests to jamminjo@email.msn.com . Thanks Jolanne! Family: Spouses and significant others are welcome. Those of you who are taking your family to the homecoming game are welcome to bring your children to the pregame party but we are not planning any entertainment for children and you should bring something to entertain them. This is first and foremost an alumni event and I neither encourage or discourage children. I felt holding the pregame party at the Candlestick last year discouraged those with children so El Camino is sort of a neutral location. Security: We will have off duty sheriffs patrolling the event and locking up. No alcohol please. We need to be on our best behaviour if we are to use school facilities for future homecoming parties. HOMECOMING PARADE We will have four alumni cars in the homecoming parade plus a jeep to pull the float. The drivers for the alumni are: Eleanor Brown: Red 87 Porsche Targa Cynthia Connell 73: Light green 68 Mustang convertible Linda Weatherford Ballance 62: Dark Green 96 Chryler Sebring Greg Grant 75 (pulling float): Open Jeep Jerry Burks 71: 86 white Mustang convertible The teachers and staff are inviting to ride in the alumni cars in the homecoming parade. We can also accomodate a teacher or two on the alumni float. We have lined up five cars for the students and plan to reuse some of the alumni cars like we did last year. Drivers in parade for students: Lorna Cline Gragg 72/73: Open Jeep Heide Mathews Boullt 78: VW Rabbit convertible Susanne Pierson Currie 75: 92 Chrysler LeBaron convertible Kris Grasso Elmer 70: white 96 white Chrysler Sebring Pepai Falck Whipple 73: 58 Ford Skyliner Retractable HOMECOMING FLOAT *** NEW *** Irene Birchfield Campbell 68 has graciously agreed to wear her Apache mascot uniform on the alumni float! Thanks to Lora Saunders 67 for suggesting I ask Irene. Paul Stewart 76 wrote: "Can't wait till you see the float. Hope you can find a teacher willing to go on the big ride. Adding up the supplies that we bought and actually used, the entire float was built for under $75 bucks. Most of it was built from things we had laying around. It's just that we had a lot of things laying around. Including a bunch of us old Sierra Oaks buddies. It would be disrespectfull to have spent too much on the float. I encourage people to donate money to the Encina athletic department. However money for supplies was donated by Dennis Peck '76 and Steve Kearney '73. Here's a list of people who worked on the float with a special thanks to Lisa Roland's Dad for loaning us the trailer. Gary Kennedy, Jim Bain '78, Don Hagy '76 and both his kids. (Kathleen O'Neil Cabe '78 is loaning us her disco ball.) Sande Jaeke '74 and her friend Chris Moser Taylor '78 also came by and were very valuable workers and it was fun to meet new people." If any of the Encina teachers and staff coming to the party would like to ride on the float, please contact Paul Stewart at pstewart@internow.com HOMECOMING RSVPS We have over 400 RSVPs from Encina alumni and staff, not counting guests or family! Many are bringing family but fortunately some are only going to the game. It's going to be packed at the game. Note that all current Encina teachers and staff are invited to the homecoming party! Unfortunately, we can not accomodate current students due to our agreement with the administrators. Marilyn Carlson Spartz wrote: "Yes, I plan to be at the party on the 20th. Sorry to be late to reply but I was out of town on vaction and just returned." Theresa Hyland Bober 77 wrote: "I understand the pressures that have been brought to Joe Lawerence regarding the homecoming event! I, too, have had several people ask me if I was going to go to the party/game (my sister Margaret, Lorna Cline from work, friend Laura Vasquez). So, I have decided that the least I could do was stop off at the party at El Camino and support our Alma Mater by buying a burger and a soda." Dalton Nezey, who was a counselor at Encina from 1988-92, will be attending the party. I spoke with Cliff LaForge, who taught English at Encina from 1960-92! Cliff had heard about the party from Vince Marelich and had received our invitation. He will be driving down from Springfield,OR and is looking forward to seeing his old colleagues and students. He said he couldn't believe Joe Lawrence was coming to a reunion, as Joe normally doesn't attend such functions... Heddy Crowder wrote that Kandi Kost Herbert 68 and her husband will be coming. Kandi not only an alumni, but started teaching chemistry at Encina this year! Stephanie Woo sent me the number for Encina principal Bart Lagomarsino. I talked with Bart and he has a family function but plans to drop by and visit during the evening. Alice Kubo is Bart's neighbor and Bart told Alice about the party. Alice wrote: "Hi. Bart just came over and told me about your reunion tomorrow evening. I have a dinner and guests coming but I will try to make it to the El Camino cafeteria after the game. Thanks for mentioning my name. You have certainly worked hard to get everyone together. I saw the list of teachers and remembered the good old times....!!!" Ray Klinefelter read the article in the Bee this morning and wrote: "I read the article in the Bee this morning about about the Homecoming Party at Encina. I was a teacher at Encina from 1970-76, then transferred to another HS. I started the Agriculture/Horticulture program there, plus taught in the Biology Department. There are a few students (people) I would like to see, and see how their lives turned out, especially students that graduated around 73-76. For the last 15 years I have been a management consultant, and just recently moved back to Sacramento. So I really haven't kept up on the alumni events over the years of Encina HS. Do any "Old" teachers ever attend any of these events? For that matter, I would like to see some of my old teacher friends too." Based on the messages passing back and forth on the 80 mailing list, the reunion weekend was a big success and everyone had a great time renewing old friendships. If folks would like to send me pictures, I would be glad to add them to the 80 homepage... 1990 REUNION Date: Saturday, October 21, 2000 Place: Delta King on the Sacramento River in Old Sacramento Dear Class of 1990 Alumni, Just a little update on where things are at for the reunion, Saturday, October 21st, 2000. We are receiving more checks for the reunion each day. We are also being contacted by alumni we previously couldn't reach, like Shannon Radford and Lisa De Leon. Thanks to the people who contacted them for us. We have already sent out our last mailing and out of more than 120 letters and postcards we've sent , only 2 have been returned for one reason or another. We were able to negotiate the menu we wanted thanks to all the people who sent their checks in prior to the original October 1st due date. We have extended the last date for checks to October 17th, but can't make any exceptions after that. The cost is $45.00 per person. The checks should be made out to "Denise Bellinger Class of '90" and mailed to Denise Bellinger, 9044 El Cajon Way, Sacramento, Ca. 95826, before October 17th. The reunion is aboard the historic Delta King, in the Jenny Lind and Yosemite rooms. The no host bar will open around 7 pm and professional photographer, Bill Markell will be taking portraits for a small fee, including postage, by the sign in table. We will have name tags for alumni and dates. Dinner will be at 8pm. We will be having a choice of Roasted Tri-Tip or Breast of Chicken in a Champagne Mushroom sauce. We have to end by 11pm, but we're hoping alumni will keep the party going in one of the hot spots downtown even later. We are also encouraging alumni to attend the Homecoming activities at Encina. The rally is Friday, October 20th at 11am, the pre game party that night at El Camino is at 5:30, and the Varsity Football game starts at 7pm. Please RSVP on the Encina web site for these activities. Lots to do!! Finally, to all the alumni, those attending the reunion, and those not attending, please keep in touch, either by updating your information on the Encina web site when you move or leaving your new address with the Encina front desk. So whether it's two weeks from now, or five years from now at the next reunion, we look forward to seeing you. Denise M. Buzzy Sanders 82? BIOS KERRY SHAW 80/81 Bio: I graduated from Encina in 1980, one year early, to attend Rutgers University in New Jersey. Four years later I graduated from Rutgers, with a double major in Public Relations and Advertising and English Literature. I worked briefly for a large SF public relations agency, then as a sales representative for a company in which I traveled 90% of the time. I met my husband Alan in 1986 and we were married in 1988. While working as a sales and catering manager for a downtown San Francisco hotel, I realized that the quality of my personal time was of the utmost importance so I left the corporate world and (with the help of many of the business contacts I had made) began my own home-based floral business. In 1994 we moved to Chicago for Alan's career and I gave birth to our daughter, Natalie, on our 6 year anniversary. She modeled fairly extensively when we were there- mainly because her agents were very accomodating and worked around our needs and schedule. In fact, some of her baby picture ads are still on packaging (First Alert toliet safety latches) and also run in current clothing catalogs (Land's End, Sears). Although I loved being at home to take care of her, I absolutely hated living in the Midwest so after I had my son Grant we moved back to the Bay Area. We bought property in Lafayette (East Bay) and moved to a family home in Tahoe for a few years while we were designing and building our house. We just recently moved in, so mainly my days are busy with managing the finishing sub-contractors, children's activites, volunteer work, and the constant stream of visiting friends and family. Last month I imported a horse from Germany (he's my newest baby), and I'm spending a lot of time getting to know him and learning the life-long humbling sport of dressage. I'm also doing some freelance writing. Trivia: I gave birth to both of my children at home (with the help of a doctor, and a midwife, and a doula, and my husband and friends). Friends: I was at Encina for two years and sadly enough, didn't have many good friends. I still talk to and see Meri Botello. I would love to catch up with Marybeth Nelson, but haven't seen her since she stopped by my grandmother's house one summer during college. Hobbies: Riding, skiing, skating, yoga. Gardening, cooking, writing, traveling. Kids: Natalie is six years old now. She has always been extremely verbal with an excellent vocabulary. She loves to tell jokes (none of them very good), has a keen intuition and an amazing memory, and wants to be an architect when she grows up. My son Grant just turned three. When he was 12 months old, he had a stroke and was paralyzed on his right side. Although there are no evident signs of disability, his speech is still a little delayed. He is very sweet and charming. He loves Thomas the Tank Engine. They are two happy, healthy children and I feel very blessed to have them in my life. Alumni_in_contact: Meri Botello SHAYLA JUAREZ 91 Occupation: Licensing Coordinator Bio: AFter graduation, I went to Brigham Young University. The year before graduation I went on a mission to Ecuador. Loved it. Cried when I left. Then I returned to school and graduated 8 months later with a BS in Psychology and a BA in Spanish. After that (actually 9 months later), I married my husband, James. We met in Texas. We soon moved to Arizona so he could attend a Graphic Design school. While there we had our first son, Alexander Juarez. After he graduated (Jan-99) we moved to Sacramento. In May of 1999, we had our second son, Daniel Angelo Salvatore (family names). Believe me, they kick my butt everyday. They are little football players. I call them "Havoc" and "Chaos". I just recently entered a Master's program at SCUPS (corresponse and mentor work). It will transfer to a Doctorate in 18-months. I won't tell you what my end result of a career will be because then you'll be hounding me with free advice. :0) My husband is a Graphic Designer - "Littleguy Graphics". He is also putting together a portfolio of a cartoon, called "SlimToonz". He is very artistic, so his brain is another atmosphere. Don't ask me how we communicate. I work at Families First in Davis. My job is to make sure that we remain compliant with the California Licensing regulations. We service level 12 and 14 Severelly Emotionally Disturbed boys. It's fun but sad, too. Trivia: It only took three contractions each time for both of my boys to be born. (that's a Ripley's event). They were both three days late. And, my birthday is still MARCH 4th. Get those cards in the mail! Friends: Gee whiz. My greatest friends were Dawn Hart, Gus Alvarez, Spencer Hamilton, Candie Graham, Craig Shaffer, Nikki Panella, Amy Schneider, Johanna Jones, Shawn Larson, Rosie Gomez, and others too. Hobbies: Hobbies: Volleyball-volleyball-volleyball. I play, coach and ref in a couple of leagues. I also play basketball. Music is a big part of my life also (instruments). I also, very much love just sitting on the couch watching my two boys and my husband rough-house on the floor. Their squeals are the cutest thing I've ever heard. Kids: Alexander Juarez Maybury - 2.5 years. Talks a lot, speaks spanish, can clothesline his little brother in an instant, favorite word is "stop it" and has the most beautiful face that I've ever seen. Nickname: "Havoc", "#77", "sweetface", "munchie" Daniel Angelo Salvatore Maybury - 18 months. Is a small version of my father (I'm in therapy for that), loves to laugh and is the happiest child in the morning (obviously does not take after his father!). Mr. Neezy - he believed in me, ALOT! Ms Mesquita - she spoke the "chosen" language. Mr. Drawbert - he taught me basketball. Mrs. Sutliff - she made me love Chemistry. Favorite_memory: Spanish class - Dawn Hart's and my "gingerbread" video. Getting sent out of history class because I smart-mouthed the sub (who was a punk to begin with). AND, being changed from an Apache to a Bulldog. Stupid. Story: Dawn - Halloween senior year! Do you remember McDonald's? Speaking of Dawn, I remember the time we walked home from school, through the back field and a third grader threw rocks at her. We waited with her until the police came. 'nuf said.
