This week I received RSVPs from former Encina staff members Jack Carey and Jack Bassett! HOMECOMING 2000 It occurs to me that some folks are not into football and this may be discouraging them from attending the homecoming party this fall. You'll be glad to know that quite a few folks did not actually make it to the game once they had settled in at the pregame party last year. In fact, it would be good if a few folks would volunteer to stay at the party so the Campus Commons venue is not left open or doesn't have to be locked up during the game. Date: Friday, October 20, 2000 Location: 707 Commons Dr, Sacramento, CA 95825 (corner of Commons and Campus Commons) Time: 5pm to 2am (game from 7-10pm at El Camino HS) The building has a lobby area, outdoor terraces and lawns to get out of crowds, bathrooms and a small kitchen, plus conference rooms and offices where we could set up tables for the potluck. The building is located in a nice wooded area. It can accomodate around 100 people indoors, with lots of room to overflow outside onto the terrace and lawn. There's lots of parking, we can stay late, alcohol is okay, there's a lawn for kids to run around, it's about 10 minutes from El Camino HS where the game will be played, we can control the sound, it's private, FREE, did I mention it's FREE, and we can set up tables for the potluck for those who wish to participate. Thanks again to Kathleen O'Neill Cabe 79 for hosting the homecoming party. Her husband's law offices are located on the first floor. HOMECOMING REUNION COMMITTEE The homecoming party continues to grow and I think we can use a little more organization and planning. I have created a new encinareunion mailing list. I initially invited only those who indicated on the homecoming RSVP form that they were interested in helping. If you RSVPed without a form and are interested in helping and being on the mailing list please let me know. The purpose of the reunion committee is to discuss plans and assign responsibilities. Potential topics include planning the float, the potluck/food, drinks/bartender/keg, signage/banners, nametags, organizing alumni cars for parade, alumni clothing, cleanup, security, photos, video, you name it. I've discontinued the old encinahomecoming mailing list which consisted of folks who were interested in the homecoming party, but not in all the planning which goes into it. I would like membership in the new encinareunion mailing list restricted to just those who are interested in helping with the homecoming party. There may occasionally be bursts of postings on this mailing list but I hope to keep it relevant to the homecoming party. HOMECOMING RSVPS We have over 100 RSVPs from Encina alumni and staff, not counting guests or family! The class of 1973 has 12 RSVPs, edging out the class of 1985 with 9, and the classes of 77, 78 and 86 with 6 rsvps. Almost all classes are represented, except for 66, 67, 68, 69, 92, 93, and 95-99. I talked with music teacher Jack Carey, who said he's looking forward to attending the homecoming party. Jack taught at Encina from 1958-1984 and was chairman of the music department. Jack said that at it's peak the music program had 500 students! Jack does not have email. I talked with teacher and administrator Jack Bassett, who was at Encina from 1958-73 as teacher and administrator and as principal from 1976-1983. Jack put the date on his calendar and says he'll try and make it. Jack does not have email either so I'll have to remind him by phone. I talked with biology teacher Jack Figenshu. Unfortunately, Jack will not be coming. He told me he's never been to an alumni reunion. If you would like to write Jack Figenshu I have his email address. Maybe YOU can convince him to attend... Jack Dutton called me this week. Jack does not have email but he gave me his daughter Lynne's email address. Lynne wrote: "When dad found out about the homecoming party he was very excited. Although he didn't say for sure if he would be coming or not, I believe he would really like to go. My hope is that he will take the opportunity to see old friends and students at your homecoming event. The years that he taught were memorable for him. He enjoyed teaching more than anyone I have known. It was wonderful to hear that other's enjoyed being in his classes. Please feel free to email him here at my email address anytime. I will gladly pass on the messages to him. (I'm trying to convince him to join the 21st century and get a computer!!!)" I talked with social science teacher Bill Derderian and am trying to convince him to come. I think he's on the fence... I have his email address if you would like to write him. More long distance attendees... Tracy Pyorre 90 will be flying up from San Diego. Sandy Cameron 85 wrote: I guess if Lance can fly up from LA, I can drive 5 hours from Yreka! Can't make the pregame due to the drive tho... NICK MILLER 70 Christine Rea 70 wrote that Nick Miller 70 passed away a few months ago. Nick was the best man at her wedding in 1971. Tony Geremia 70 wrote: Nick Miller passed away around the beginning of February. He died of heart failure. He's survived by his mother in Colorado and brothers Rhett and Gary. Neither brother attended Encina. WESLEY SCHENKEN 81 This week Wesley submitted this entertaining bio. Occupation: Teacher Bio: Went to CSU, Chico for a year. Drank a lot and bombed out. Lived with Linda Wirick for a year while attending American River. Finally got my act together and returned to Chico and graduated in Dec. 86. Jeff Albright and I were roommates for a short time. Started teaching 4th and 5th grade at Arboga School, south of Olivehurst, which is south of Marysville. Married Lori Bunch of Chico in '88. We moved out to Sutter, west of Yuba City, to live in the family home. The Lybecker Lodge has been in the family for 5 generations. The house is 115 years old. We've done a lot with it, but it is difficult to maintain, especially on a teacher's salary. Whine. Whine. I started teaching 7th grade History, Language Arts, and Reading at Brittan School, 6 blocks from home, four years ago. Hoping to teach 8th grade next year. Yes, I am insane. Speaking of insanity. I have 3 boys. Kyle (9), Parker (5), and Nick (1). We lost a little girl, Rachel, in 1994. Trivia: Rode my bicycle from the Golden Gate to Long Island Sound in 1986, just in time to catch the Statue of Liberty Centennial. Friends: My best friends were any one in Madrigals. Lewis Wood, Brian Porter, Yon Gomez, and Wayne Fiori had a blast in our band The. Would love to hear from any of them, especially Chuck. Jeff Albright and I attended Chico together, and still get together every summer and go camping. Joining us in the dirt, is Dirk Ruthrauff ('80), and Matt Kirk ('83). Will Lewis and Jim Barsh were regulars on this annual camping trip for a while but have dropped off the face of the earth. Would love to here from them. Hobbies: Writing Poetry. Cursing about my god damn renters who trashed my house again. Water and snow skiing. Bycycling when I can get away. Like to show off on my student's skate boards, "Wo, Mr. Schenken's pretty good!" DJing. Just started a new business, Sutter Sounds. My first wedding is this weekend. Kids: Kyle loves soccer more than baseball, but hit a double tonight. Excels in school. Too smart for his own good. Loves to argue. Inherited that from his mother. Driving me insane. Parker just turned five. Got a slip n slide. Cool! A kind hearted kid. Always thinking of others. Kyle and Parker are Pokeman crazy. But they like Star Wars and rock n roll like me, so that's good. Nick is one. Loves his Dad, and to be outside. Will bring me his shoes when he decides it is time to go out. Will eat anything, especially if it is filthy. Memorable_teachers: Mr. Carey-taught me gobs about life and success. Besides he is the only teacher I have much memory of. I remember Mr. Huber called me Schwinkie. But he also sent me to the office for talking during a test and I WASN'T! It was that guy George, who was sitting behind me. I SWEAR IT! Favorite_memory: Madrigal trip to LA, and listening to Supertramp's "Lord Is It Mine," on the chartered bus. Doing "O" turns. Taking off during classes for fake singing engagements and BAing people. And listening to the B-52's and the Clash and the Knack for the first time. The horrible way we treated Mr. Salami during that summer school class. Especially Steve Brown. "Let's have a cookie party." I think they passed around hash brownies in class. Remember when the whole class went out for breakfast, then one at a time, came into class late saying, "The bus was late." I swore I'd never be a teacher after that. And Slaughter Ball. And H.M.S. Pinafore. And laughter. Does anyone remember laughter? Story: My sister Carrie '84 is now managing the 5th tallest building in Seattle. She survived the riots there. Just got a new house. WAYNE FIORI 81 Another interesting bio... Occupation: Network Security Specialist Bio: Just kept going to school. After I finished my BS in Chemistry at CSUS, I went to UCSC for graduate school. In between the two, I worked for Fish & Game doing pesticide and heavy metal anaylsis. My work at UCSC revolved around how protein determine their three-dimensional structure. I moved to Texas A&M for a post doctoral position after I finished my Masters and PhD work at UCSC. I worked on methods to inhibit amyloid fibril formation (i.e., preventing Alzheimer and Mad Cow diseases). Once my contract at Texas A&M was completed, I moved to Stanford for another post doc position -- more theoretical work on how proteins fold. I felt the need to change careers at this point and living in Silicon Valley provided a good deal of opportunities. I joined a small start-up (http://www.lifechart.com/) to run its IT department. As about a year ago, I started working for Nokia's IP Routing group as a Network Security Specialist. Trivia: I've had papers pulished in Nature, Biochemistry, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, and others. I have met ten Nobel Lauretes in my career as a chemist. Friends: Because I was moving around so much, I've lost contact with everyone. I spent most of my time with the members of The band -- Lewis Wood, Yon Gomez, and Wes Schenken; the Housewreckers Mark Johnson, Bill Bua, and Larry McKibben. I've been curious what's happened over the years. Hobbies: I am involved with several Beagle rescue organizations nationwide. Recently, we rescued a beagle from a Mississippi shelter, flew him from Shreveport to Oakland and then driving him to his new home in Redding. Memorable_teachers: Because of their influence on my choice of chemistry as a career, I have counted both Bill Coke and John Figenshu as important. Jack Carey was simply a good person. He taught lessons beyond his courses. Favorite_memory: My time in the Bell Street Housewreckers (Dixieland Band) has always been a source of good memories.
