First, we found a home for the Homecoming 2000 party thanks to Kathleen O'Neill Cabe 79! Thanks Kathleen! Second, I received an RSVP from Christine Kojima for the homecoming party! Yes, we're talking about Mrs. Kojima, whom many of you have written about in your bios as your favorite and/or most memorable teacher. I'm looking forward to meeting Christine at the homecoming party! HOMECOMING 2000 Date: Friday, October 20, 2000 Location: 707 Commons Dr, Sacramento, CA 95825 (corner of Commons and Campus Commons) Time: 5pm to 2am (game from 7-10pm) This week we were fortunate to find a home for the Homecoming party this fall! Several weeks ago, Kathleen O'Neill Cabe 79 wrote, offering the use of the Campus Commons office building where her husband's law office resides. She and her husband have hosted similar size parties in the past, including politcal fundraisers and holiday parties. Lorna Cline Gragg 72/73 and Diane Schoenborn Kelly 73 and my mother Mary Lau were good enough to stop by and check out the location. I've been waiting for Kathleen to check with their landlord that October 20th was available and this week she wrote that it's okay! The building has a lobby area, outdoor terraces and lawns to get out of crowds, bathrooms and a small kitchen, plus conference rooms and offices where we could set up tables for the potluck. This location fulfills the original requirements: 1. Available Friday, October 20, 2000 from 5pm to at least midnight Kathleen says we can stay past midnight. 2. Large enough to accomodate over 100 people. Kathleen estimates the lobby could handle 100 standing but it'd be crowded. With overflowing onto terraces 200 is not a problem unless it rains. And there's a lawn if we have a really huge turnout. My take is that if we have bad weather, not too many will be interested in watching a football game in the rain anyway... 3. Reasonably close to El Camino HS Kathleen estimates about 10 minutes to El Camino. 4. Ability to set up no host bar Kathleen says we can bring in a bartender. Or just bring in some kegs. Whatever. 5. Ability to bring in food for potluck. There's a small kitchen and some rooms we can use for food stations. 6. Cost in the $200-300 range. FREE! FREE! FREE! 7. Ability to control sound/noise. We'll have to building to ourselves, no outsiders, no loud music or sports broadcasts. Some additional perks: 1. Lots of parking in lot or on Campus Commons Dr. 2. No outsiders. Everyone is alumni or family. 3. Serene, wooded location. 4. More suitable for families. Last year, some alumni did not feel comfortable bringing their children to the Candlerock before the game, since it was a bar. We WILL have to make sure everything is cleaned up and put away before we leave. I've updated the Homecoming 2000 page with a map showing the location of 707 Commons Dr (corner of Commons and Campus Commons). HOMECOMING RSVPs As I mentioned before, Christine Kojima plans to attend the homecoming party this fall. I'm hoping that Mrs. Kojima can convince some of her old friends to attend. Those who attended the homecoming party last year know that we had five alumni convertibles in the halftime parade. I have some film of this which I'll be adding to the Homecoming 99 pages. This year I thought we could dedicate one car to Encina staff and I've invited Christine Kojima to ride in one of the cars in the homecoming parade. If you would like to invite a particular teacher to the homecoming party, let me know and I'll tell you how to get in contact with them. RSVPs this week: Christine Kojima John Nunez 74 Kate Grebitus 75 Kelly Dimmitt Fink 86 Kelly Dimmitt 86 wrote: "In your next newsletter, we need to get the 80's classmates off their butts and go to this Homecoming thing. I think if we mention it everytime, and I can possibly help by sending notes to all my class mates and make a listing on Classmates.com.....What are your thoughts? Sick or not, I am going with bells and whistles on. Gotta take life when you have it, and not take advantage of it....." Hmmm, perhaps it would be good to have a little interclass competition like we did last year. So far, the class of 73 is leading again, as usual! Those of you who attended last year know that I made up special Homecoming nametags for those who RSVPed. No RSVP, No nametag! Please RSVP if you think you will be attending the homecoming alumni party this fall: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming_form.htm I'll keep the RSVP list on the Homecoming 2000 page up to date so you can check and see who's going: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming2000.htm If you would like to see what happened at last year's Homecoming 99 party: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming99.htm REUNIONS 1965 REUNION Date: August 19, 2000 Place: Unitarian Church 2425 Sierra Blvd (between Howe and Fulton) Sacramento, CA I've been getting lots of contact forms from 65 alumni since the mailing went out. 1966 REUNION Ron McFarland wrote that he is in contact with Alan Stroppini, who compiled the class contact list for the 30 year reunion. I will try and obtain the list from Alan so the 66 class directory will reflect those whose whereabouts are known. 1970 REUNION The reunion committee met this week. They are investigating dates for the reunion. One suggestion was Saturday, October 21st, the day after the Homecoming party. This would allow out of town classmates to attend both parties. 1975 REUNION The reunion invitation was mailed April 29th. If you have a sibling or friend from the class of 75 who might not know about the reunion please forward this to them. Note that this is next Tuesday! Contact Melissa Tovar at Melissatovar@aol.com 1985 REUNION Not much happening as far as I can tell. No one seems to want to take the lead. If past observations hold, all it takes it one brave soul to volunteer to chair and I predict you'll have lots of helpers. If you are still interested in having a 15 year reunion, please write the class mailing list at encina1985@egroups.com and get things going before it's too late. Now that you have the mailing list you can reach lots of your classmates in a mailing and get them on the mailing list and into the class directory. 1990 REUNION Jinne Horger wrote that the park was booked for their original date. RON MCFARLAND 66 I thought I would share Ron McFarland's bio. Ron was fortunate enough to survive a hijacked plane crash in the Indian Ocean! After graduating from Encina in 1966, I went to American River (AR). My main goal at that time was simply to get a student deferment to stay out of the Vietnam War draft. While at AR, I took an interest in Business and decided to go to a 4-year college and study business management. In 1969, I transferred to San Jose State College and got a degree in 1971. I did have to joint the US Army Reserves to say out of the Vietnam War. I had to take the MOS (Military Specialty) no one wanted. I was a drill sergeant for six years in the reserves. After working in the San Francisco Bay Area of about five years and finishing with the Reserves, I came to Japan on a 1-year contract to teach English to businessmen in a small town north of Tokyo. During that one year, I learned of a graduate school in Tokyo. I applied for admission, attended there and graduated in 1980. While in graduate school, I met my wife. This September, we will have been married for 20 years. We have two daughters. After completing the graduate school, my neighbor introduced my to his company, Isuzu Motors, and I was employed by them in 1980. Isuzu is affiliated with General Motors. Currently, GM owns 49% of Isuzu. I have now been with Isuzu for 20 years, and over that time I have mainly been involved in training overseas truck dealers and distributors. Most of the training is involved with vehicle features, but I also get conduct sales, sales management, and general management training for retail dealerships. Much of the training work is in developing countries where it is needed the most, so I have traveled extensively throughout Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Africa. As a matter of fact, I was unfortunately on Ethiopian Airlines flight #961 that was hijacked and crashed in the Indian Ocean on November 23, 1996. I was one of 48 people who survived out of 175 passengers. Also, I am blessed with no permanent injuries. I get very little work in North America or Europe. I am still involved in that type of work today, although to a lesser degree with the very deep recession here in Japan. All the automobile companies are suffering, including Isuzu and travel budgets are very tight. I have been in Japan now for 24 years and plan to stay here for at least another 10 years. THE HARDEST WAY TO BREAK UP Close to the door he paused to stand as he took his class ring off her hand. All who were watching did not speak as a silent tear ran down his cheek. And through his mind the memories ran of the moments they walked and laughed in the sand. But, now her eyes were so terrible cold, for he would never again have her to hold. They watched in silence as he bent near and whispered the words...... "I LOVE YOU" in her ear. He touched her face and started to cry as he put on his ring and wanted to die. And just then, the wind began to blow as they lowered her casket into the snow.... This is what happens to man alive...... .....when friends let friends..... drink and drive. Diane Schoenborn Kelly 73 sent me this poem. YEARBOOKS Tracy Taylor 91 has offered to scan in her 1988-90 yearbooks for the website with her new scanner! Thanks Tracy!
