It was a fun, casual night visiting with friends and family members from Encina classes 1962 - 1991!!! Thank you to Norm Axtell (79) who provided the music. Linda Weatherford Ballance and her cousin Sheran Weatherford Yeager represented the Class of 1962, the first four year class to graduate from Encina...The Patton family gets the award for the most family members in attendance: Nancy, 73; John, 75; Janice, 76; Dale, 81, Stephanie (Bush) Patton, 81. If you want to party, you can always count on Encina alumni for a good time...good conversation...good memories. Encina ROCKS!!!" HOMECOMING 2000 This year's third annual alumni homecoming party will be September 29 or 30th. Be sure to mark this down on your calendar so you don't have a conflict. For those of you who are new, last year's Homecoming 99 alumni party was HUGE. The day started at the Homecoming rally, where a few alumni including myself judged the most spirited class. Then there was a pregame party at the Candlerock before the game. During the game the alumni had five cars in the homecoming parade and our own reserved section of the stands. The night ended with a postgame party back at the Candlerock. See the Homecoming 99 page for details and pictures: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming99.htm We had over 150 alumni spanning forty years of Encina at the party, not including family and friends. It was truly a memorable night! I've updated the Homecoming section of the website and added a Homecoming 2000 page. We already have a few early signups from Tracy Taylor 91, Gloria Reynolds 70 and Dave Morgan 61: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming2000.htm If you plan to come this year, please RSVP. I think by starting early and getting lots of signups from the various classes early on, we can double last year's attendance. This year, we even plan to build our own float and have several volunteers raring to go. I would like to get more participation from other classes this year. Last year the classes with the best turn out were those who had a few energetic folks who called up their friends and spread the word. So sign up and get your friends to sign up. The more people who sign up, the more classmates will be drawn in once we have critical mass. I'll keep the RSVP list on the Homecoming 2000 page up to date so you can check and see who's going. I look forward to seeing you at the Homecoming 200 party this fall! REUNIONS I'm glad to hear the class of 65 will be having a 35 year reunion this year! For those whose classes are not having a reunion this year, or whose classes were supposed to have a reunion and didn't, think of the annual homecoming party as an opportunity to have a little mini reunion for your class where all you have to do is show up and the planning is taken care of for you! 1965 REUNION Jeanne Kern wrote that there was a reunion committee meeting at George Hullin's house last night. They have decided to go forward with the 35 year reunion plans and will let me know the date soon. 1970 REUNION If you are interested in attending or helping with the 30 year reunion, please contact Pamela Deason Thomas at egishome@aol.com 1975 REUNION Where: Sutter Club When: Saturday, July 15, 2000 Contact Jenny Bender Bittner at jedb@pacbell.net 1980 REUNION Where: The Firehouse When: Saturday, October 14, 2000 Contact: encina1980@egroups.com Richard Stoffel wrote that the next reunion meeting is scheduled for: Tuesday, March 28th 6:30 p.m. 2264 Fair Oaks Boulevard, Suite 202 1985 REUNION No news regarding the elusive Melinda Cope 85. CLASSMATES.COM Many thanks to Cathy Buchanan 70 who pointed out all the new listings of Encina alumni on the classmates.com website. I've been slowly going through the listings. This is responsible for the burst of new listings in the 61-64 class directories. ALUMNI SEARCH Please contact me if you know the whereabouts of: Katrina "Trina" Pace 86 CLASS MAILING LISTS Why do I feel this sense of deja vu? Shades of be coolness. I would like to remind you all about the purpose of the class mailing lists. At least from my point of view. I created the class mailing lists as a tool to foster communication between classmates. I thought it could be used for reunion planning and Encina related matters. In the last few months I've used it to announce the addition of newly found alumni and to publish bios and I think this has worked out well. In some classes, classmates have chatted back and forth about their families and reunion plans. New additions to the mailing list are welcomed and made to feel at home. Folks have rediscovered each other and gotten reacquainted with each other and exchanged family pictures. These conversations give me a warm feeling. The class mailing lists are like a party line though, and those who post need to remember that there are lots of classmates listening in on the conversation. While others may find it interesting to listen to chat about families and classmates and their lives, flame wars and personal attacks are not acceptable and will not be tolerated. It it obvious to me that some of the "banter" back and forth would not take place in personal email and that it is the "captive audience" that is providing a forum for some folks to "show off" in front of their peers. I would ask some of you to think long and hard about the impression you are making on your classmates and whether it is a positive one that you can live with when you see these people in person at your next reunion. In a few cases, I think not. Email makes it easy to say things in the heat of the moment which you can never take back. You may get a transitory feeling of satisfaction sending a flamemail, but the long term consequences may not be what you desire. I am very reluctant to remove individuals from their class mailing list. Other restrictions which egroups allows are to prevent posting or to subject posts to approval by the moderator. egroups also makes it possible for me to name responsible individuals on the class mailing lists as co-managers and co-moderators so that the classes can police themselves. However, it is a heavy burden to take on this role and sit in judgment of your classmates. It is certainly a role which I wish to avoid myself. I do not want to discourage use of the mailing lists or to act as censor. But we are adults now and need to behave in a responsible manner. The second topic is the sending of broadcast email. Some of you seem to have an option in your email software to send email to everyone in your address book. I would like to discourage you from using this option if your address book includes the class mailing list. Please create a "group" or "mailing list" in your address book and send your mail only to those who are interested. For example, I have a personal humor mailing list to which I occasionally forward humor email. But the only people on my humor mailing list are those who have asked to be on it. I do not send my humor mailings to everyone. So please be aware that many folks do not enjoy receiving "chain letters" or "virus warnings" or "urban legends" or "humor". I would like to request that anyone who has MY email address in their address book remove me from there mailing lists for this type of mail. So I would ask you all to try and observe a few guidelines regarding the class mailing lists: 1. keep your communications civil. funny/teasing is one thing, personal attacks are another. 2. do not forward "chain letters", "humor", "virus warnings" and the like to your class mailing list. If you have additional guidelines or suggestions please write. I hope that this will be sufficient warning that I am not forced to "censor" the few alumni who are abusing their class mailing lists. CATHLEEN ESSERT 75 Tim Essert 73 wrote: "Shivaun Essert Albright (Encina '78) and I are planning to put together a scrapbook of her sister Cathleen's life for her children this summer. Would it be possible to put out a request to the Class of '75 mailing list for fond memories about Cathleen from high school days, or even further back? I know some of the kids started out in grade school together. Also, if there's anyone who has photographs they'd be willing to share, that would be great. We can get them photocopied for the scrapbook and returned right away. Many thanks for all your assistance as go-between!" I forwarded this message to the 75 mailing list earlier this week but I thought maybe some acquaintances from other classes might like to help too. AMAZING TECHNOLOGY I've been seeing these ads for the XCam2 from x10.com and decided to try one when the price dropped to $80. The Xcam2 consists of a tiny color videocamera integrated with a 2.4Ghz transmitter with a range of 100 ft, along with a receiver and the necessary cables and AC adapters. This is amazing technology for the price. I have the receiver connected to a tv and the camera broadcasts a color video of whatever is in view to the tv along with sound. For the price, I didn't expect much, but the quality was really quite good, with about 640x480 resolution. They also have software and hardware available so that you can connect the receiver to your PC. Check out www.x10.com. Highly recommended! STORE The Encina website is now an affiliate of both carsdirect.com and carorder.com. Both of these internet retailers give you a price online and deliver the car directly to your door. This is different from most of the other car websites, which basically refer you to a dealer who gives you a quote. I ordered a Honda Odyssey minivan from carorder.com this week. It'll be interesting to buy a car on the internet. Plus the Encina website will get a minimum $100 commission on each carorder.com sale and $75 for each carsdirect.com sale. Unfortunately, the Honda minivans are in short supply, so this should make it more challenging for an internet retailer. We need the minivan by this summer, when we plan to take a driving vacation to the Grand Canyon and visit some of the other parks in the area. Hmm. carorder.com just called me and said there is a six to eight month waiting list and that they've scheduled deliver for October 25! Holy cow. If any alumni out there have a Honda contact who can get one sooner please write. This is ridiculous...
